As a new NP of a couple months your videos are really helpful! I don’t often find myself really nervous, it may be the emergency nursing background, but I do worry sometimes about missing something big because I don’t ask about something small like you said. Remembering that common things happen commonly, and rare things happen rarely has been really helpful!
Pro-tip: I like to review the chart while my MA is dong the work-up to see what the patients complaint is and review the patients chart. That way I can walk into the room with 1-2 differentials.
If the pt has a history of diverticulitis, presents with pain that appears to be related to such, have you ever treated prophylactically for diverticulitis?
It totally depends. Up-to-Date has a great algorithm for lower abdominal quadrant pain, but it also depends on your assessment of the person to see if they need imaging or not. But yes, I've definitely seen providers prescribe antibiotics for suspected diverticulitis in patients with a previous history, milder symptoms, and with close follow up.
Hey, great video! QUESTION: You mentioned that when you started as an NP you had a note of OLD CART to help you perform well. What would you suggest to put on a sheet to help you as a NP during a patient exam that is both appropriate and professional?
Hey there! Check out the transcript of the video here: www.realworldnp.com/diagnosing-abdominal-pain-nurse-practitioner-transcript. That should give you the list of questions I mentioned in the video. Thanks!
Hi your videos are very helpful . do you have any mentoring services ? Can you make a video on insulin titration ? Do you have any recomendable sources for it ?
Thank you! Our mentoring services are on hold right now due to an overwhelming amount of requests. We will be launching a new membership soon which will have mentoring services, so stay tuned. We will add your topic request to the list! Thanks so much!
I have a left abdominal pain and it’s been 4 days since it happened, the pain hasn’t gotten worse or better, I haven’t really had any symptoms but what I noticed is that my poop was softer than normal close to diarrhea. It hurts when I apply pressure to it and lay down on my left side, I’m getting concerned, do you have an idea what it might be ? The pain isn’t severe
My 10 yr old daughter presented sudden vomiting and severe pain in her lower abdomen. First Urgent care Dr thought it might be constipation. Pain was so severe he sent us to the ER. We waited for 2 hrs before being seen. She was screaming in pain and the Dr ordered an ultrasound. While doing the ultrasound she nearly fainted in pain. While scanning I noticed a huge mass. Turned out to be a teratoma on her ovary that had torqued. Extremely rare for her age. She was immediately sent into surgery and her ovary was saved. Sometimes if the normal ailments for stomach pain are not checking the boxes, 100% think what is in the area of pain as a source.
Hi! I have been working for a while to slow down my speech. But here is a good hack - when you are watching on UA-cam, look at the bottom right of the frame where you will find an icon that looks like a gear. Click on that, and you will see how you can slow down and speed up the video. Try that next time if you are having trouble with my speed - I will keep working on it!

I'm so glad!
Yes, I would bring in a ros worksheet that my preceptor made me specific to multiple myeloma and amyloidosis.
Excellent!
Yes! When I walk into a room, my head starts spinning with all the differential diagnoses it's so hard to organize my thoughts!

I am really sorry, but I can't advise on your case for legal and safety reasons. We always recommend contacting your primary care provider.
This is awesome, thank you
