Today was day 3 for me being a new grad NP in Internal med and I NEEDED this video today. Anxiety/imposter syndrome/not feeling/knowing enough have all been haunting me. Thank you for helping me pick my head back up so I can walk back in there tomorrow with it held high!
Thank you thank you thank you for this. NP with 6 months experience here and that feeling like you are never doing enough or ever caught up is so real. It’s hard going from the expert as an RN back to being the beginner again especially in a small practice where you feel like your resources are thin. I appreciate your channel so much!
Wow!!! Im a dude, and I though it was sink or swim (either you thrive or fail). Honestly, I was just ready to hang it all up, screw the student loans and go back to being just a simple "worker bee" ED RN. This video hit hard; I've been an NP for about 2 years now. Thank You.
Liz, great video! I'm halfway through my 5th week as a new FNP at a primary care clinic. Your honesty is greatly appreciated,; more than you know. At 50 years old and with 15 years of various years of RN exprience, I sense a little bit of intimidation and resentment from my younger more experienced NP/PA peers. They are helpful when I ask questions, but I do not feel the support I know I will provide to others that will be in myt shoes. Like they do not remember how it felt to be fresh out of the gate. Much like I did at the RN level. I definietly feel lost and behind; wondering why I did this. Again, your candidness in this video gives me the hope to hold on and take the time I need to be safe and effective as a new provider. Sincerely Rob. S. CRNP
I quit on Monday, it was so toxic there, I didn't fit in with the cool kids. 6 different preceptors, no consistency, I was not learning a system to build from. At 10 weeks I was essentially given the option to resign or get let go..... they actually did me a favor as I feel as though a huge weight has been lifted off of my shoulders! Unfortunately, this was my pcp's office...was! Next chapter, primary care is possible, just not under those circumstances. Urgent care, here i come! Thanks again for your support! Rob S. CRNP
I smoothly sailed through FNP school, passed boards the first time, and now was accepted into a competitive fellowship program and I still don't feel like im good enough to be an APN. idk I just think fnp curriculum needs to be revamped to prepare us better.
I started my job in June, and I'd say that I'm struggling like you wouldn't believe, but after this video, I know you'd believe. Just here seeking videos just like this so that I know I'm not crazy, alone or running with the idea that this is too hard or that I'm a failure. This helps. Thank you so much.
I'm sorry to hear you are struggling. You are definitely NOT alone. I believe in you, and one day it won't feel as hard as it does now. You got this! 💕
Thank you for this! I just finished my first week as a new grad NP in internal med and while I have great support, it is still very challenging. I wanted to cry watching this when you said "thank you for putting your beautiful heart into the world". I think that's why we're all here, to take the very best care of our patients. You help us do that and you are amazing at it! Keep doing what you do!! :)
Just found your channel and I’m enjoying your videos so much!! Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience. You’re definitely helping many NPs out there
Omg! You are so sweet and honest. You must be an awesome NP, wish I had you as my NP. I’m very impressed with your honesty. Thank you so much for sharing
Thank you! This video is making me think about that important quote: "We grow the most when we are challenged." It sure can be intense and hard though, lol! Really good what you are sharing... Thank you for sharing your heart xo
Thank you so much Liz, you literally described my first day as an NP! So glad you are out here helping the rest of us and giving us the extra push and confidence we need to make it through.
Physician assistant here! I’ve been in clinical practice for 2 years and the complexity of clinical practice as well as the amount of mental and emotional energy that it requires is blows my mind! Thanks for the reminder that we are in this together, we are always learning, we are doing better than we think, and even the seemingly small things we do for our patients can make an impact. Thank you, you are amazing!
Thank you so much! The hardest part for me is starting out as a new NP just as the pandemic hit, being told I'm 'non-essential' as a new NP and not being able to practice so soon after graduating, your website and guidance has really helped me to get my confidence back.
Thank you so much for this! I really needed to hear this. I just completed my first clinical rotation and I started to think I had made a mistake by going to NP school but hearing messages like this and understanding that it is a "marathon" and not a sprint is profound!!! Again, thank you!
Thank you making this video! I am currently in the BSN-DNP program at Temple U and have 196 days left, not like I'm counting. Feeling not good enough to be an NP creeps into my mind a lot. Sometimes it is very overwhelming and there are days that I study for hours because I am afraid that I might cause harm to a patient when I'm a NP. This video was refreshing and exactly what I needed to hear. Thank you once again!!
You are an amazing being!! Thank you for your authenticity and heartfelt empathy for our special field of practice 💓 Working as a sole NP in a brand new NP clinic role as a brand new NP in primary care was insanely isolating, but I had a fabulous consulting who continues to be a mentor even though I left NP practice after 7 years. Mentorship makes all the difference and I will continue to tune into your channel. My position was defunded, that’s why I left by the way, and having not practiced for 3 years I had to let my license expire per our regulating body here in Ontario- but I’m still thinking of returning to practice and people like you help me remember why I loved it and how good it felt to really make a positive change for the women I cared for. Thank you!
Thank you so much! I do hope, if you do return, it goes well for you, and that you find what you're looking for. It's good work, but it's hard work - we both know that!
Thank you so much I’m so glad I found you because you have been so helpful I was getting so discouraged I’m in my seventh month of practice and it has been a huge challenge thank you so much for all your encouraging videos and all your education
I was searching for something else and came across you post. Thank you so much for sharing this, for I really felt like I was alone on my first NP job. I relocated to another state for the position and it was extremely difficult for me about 4-6 months into to the job; I lasted 1 yr and went back to travel nursing within my organization this past Oct. I begin to neglect my own health due to the stress of the job. I have sense then destressed and recouped and ready to go back in. Your video really helped me and assured me that I am not alone in making this transition. Thank you for sharing!
Hi, I am in Australia and have just started my study for transition to NP. I needed this video today thank you 🙏🏼 because I’m already feeling overwhelmed and like I want to give up 😢
Bless your beautiful heart. I am so encouraging by the expertises you share on this UA-cam channel. I am a FNP still looking for job since passing my AANP Board exam in December last year (2019). I am trying to be positive and not to be anxious!!!. It is a daily struggle at this time but hopefully it will increase my empathy for patients and anyone with a struggle. Thank you for doing these videos
You're so welcome! I'm so sorry it's taken so long, Amanda has bootcamp next week with 3 live classes to help with job searching, it's here if you want to sign up! I'll be there :) realworldnp--theresumerx.thrivecart.com/djr/5e8c7927355d8/
You’re such a beautiful person !! Glad I ran into your channel as I searched for prep on NP interviews! They are starting to roll in and I’m as nervous as I am ready !! Wish me luck chica and thank you !!
Thank you so much for this video, it came to me when I really need it.. You are doing amazing things for us new NPs and for the profession, a real blessing :)
Thank you for this.. I am 4 months away from graduation and so much anxiety. This is helpful knowing it is normal what I am feeling. Even though I have been a nurse for 26 years, Im still worried what if I dont know what to order or If my brain freezes, what if I cant decide on a medication because my brain tends to overthink and I go down so many rabbit holes worrying if this med will cause a reaction or maybe this med wont work with the medication they are already on. What if I dont have a phone a friend. The endless worries.
This channel is amazing! My experience is in Burn and MICU and am planning on getting into education on the side since I love teaching/helping students and new nurses! However a provider role is a possible option way down the road. This channel is pretty unique, cannot wait to learn more! Thanks for sharing your knowledge ❤️
Thanks for making these videos. You have a really humble and light energy about you/your videos. What do you think about someone going to FNP school (goal of working in adult primary care) with only one year of specialized experience in maternity? Do you think it's necessary to get med surg or ED experience first?
I think that's what a lot of people recommend, and I know for me it was super helpful having worked in the hospital with high acuity adults before becoming an NP, but I also work with master's entry students and clinicians who are excellent. I think trust your gut! I knew that working any longer as a nurse in the hospital would make me unhappy, so I decided to apply to school after 3 years as a nurse, and ended working as a nurse at 5 years once I graduated.
Hi, I came across your channel because my wife started being a nurse practitioner a couple of months ago. She is a brilliant and caring person and I love her to death. She has been feeling severe anxiety and waking up in the middle of the night thinking about her patients. She signed a contract to the doctor's office she currently works at for 2 years and thinks she needs to just "go through this and stick it out" but I want to know is there anything that can at least elevate her anxiety at all? I know this is an old video so I hope someone can help me with this. Thanks again and great channel!
The fact that you care so much about your wife is wonderful and will be very helpful as she progresses through the transition. Encourage her to find a mentor or someone who she can talk with regularly - this is important! That person can help talk her through diagnoses and labs and everything else that might be challenging right now. There are a lot of videos on this channel about transitioning into practice that can be helpful to her. There are also a lot of free resources on this channel - cheat sheets and links to places that can help her with her practice. Tell her to get on social media and find some NP groups that might offer guidance and support. And, most importantly, hang in there! Let her know we are all cheering her on and this will be tough, but she will get through it. She will eventually feel more confident in her work - I got there, and she will too!!!

New NP here (haven’t started working yet) Do you order routine blood work every three months on patients who are on antihypertensives and metformin( like a BMP and A1C q3 months) ? Also Are there any guidelines you can point me to that state to order routine blood work and how often for certain meds a patient is on ? Thank you!
Unfortunately there really aren't any guidelines that I know of that talk about routine lab screening aside from the USPSTF guidelines. Typically we order too many labs in primary care I think, it really should be condition specific aside from those types of guidelines. Another thing to note about screening guidelines. USPSTF is one option, but you get to decide for yourself if you prefer USPSTF vs another guides (ADA, etc) and which you align with for which patients. Makes it confusing unfortunately! But yes, typically patients with DM and HTN I'm monitoring their labs every 3-4 months depending on their baseline, how their conditions are doing, and if there have been any big changes for them. Hopefully that helps!
