- WHAT IS THE MAX POWER I CAN MAKE WITH 317 LS HEADS? HOW WELL DO 317 HEADS WORK ON A 5.3L? SHOULD I SWAP TO 317 HEADS ON MY 4.8L, 5.3L OR 6.0L? HOW WELL TO PORTED 317 HEADS WORK? ARE 317 HEADS A GOOD CHOICE FOR A TURBO LS? ARE 317 HEADS MORE PUMP-GAS FRIENDLY? IS LOWER COMPRESSION BETTER FOR BOOST? CHECK OUT THIS VIDEO WHERE I COVER THREE DIFFERENT TURBO LS COMBINATIONS RUNNING 317 HEADS. THE FIRST TWO INCLUDED A CAMMED 5.3L AND 6.2L, EACH EQUIPPED WITH A SINGLE TURBO MAKING LOW BOOST. THE THRID COMBINATION WAS THE HIGH-HORSEPOWER 6.0L, EXCEEDING 1450 HP AT 28 PSI. THE 317 HEADS CAN MAKE BIG POWER, BUT WHAT IS THE POWER LIMIT? holley-team.com/3NCs5MH
The “magic” of the 317, for me, is most head porters offer a cheaper Stage 1 port job since the 317 already has bigger valves. Local shops wanted 400$ just to refresh the heads. For under 1000$ I got stage 1 porting (313cfm/220cfm @ .600), heads refreshed, a GOOD valve job, and PAC .625 lift springs. The extra 600$ was well spent IMO.
Perfect! Exactly what Info I need currently 🤘
Dude ask anyone who ported Ls heads 20 years ago and the 317 was the #2 go to cathedral port. Well at least it was my #2 choice. It’s really nice to see somthing different than just flow bench data in why you should choose this or that head. Good video!
I have a L33 with 317 heads Summit 8720 cam and 7875 turbo. This is going into a 72 Datsun 510
nice !
Beast will be a hand full !!
Sick!
This is the heads I run on my booster LQ4. Running pump 93 with 8.5psi of boost. So far so good.
That's pretty low considering the factory LSA is 10-11 psi with similar compression
How much whp and whtq?
I would love to see you do a video on reverse heads and see the benefits or draw backs to going with this set up.
If this video exists to raise the value of 317 then I have stacks of them sitting in my house. Someone please come buy them off of me.
😂 have 2 sets also
Travis, where are you located? I build LS's in San Diego

I run ported 317s on an LQ4 with a TVS2300 blower. With California's 91 octane it's a great match.
Would be neat to see a comparison of what power on pump gas the different factory ls heads support in a turbo situation with realistic coolant temps and detonation detected by knock sensor.
Richard please do a turbo big bang with the Gen 2 LT1! You covered it before but curious what you can do with it.
The price of 317 heads just skyrocketed!
Good thing they were basically worth scrap price, so if the go up a little they will still be dirt cheap lol
Right on
I'm waiting for you to test the new engine quest head!
This was the video I needed lol
Only reason I went with LY6 heads in my setup is because I had to buy a lower profile intake manifold for stuff to fit in my 4th gen firebird.
But damn if it doesnt scream up top
Very glad u did this test- and yes it was what i figured, tripping over these heads on the ground at wreckers- they work perfectly fine for anything but max power
ok thank you
Would love to see sealed long block big bang testing on the 4.8/5.3/6.0!
That is not a Big Bang test
@richardholdener1727 on the gen 3 6.0. What was max timing , after, @ 25 psi?
What timing , afr, @ 27 psi on e85, do you recommend to gain similar power?
Are those cast or hypereutectic aluminum, which ones will hold more power?
Thanks Rich for this video. I have an LQ9 that I set up for E85 (fuel pump, injectors, fuel cell, and lines) I know I am giving up power with the Fab intake but it looks good. In a 2 door Jeep it is definitely a riot to drive. Next step is boost rather than heads, probably the Torq-Storm. Are there any problems with that supercharger that you know of? They are a local company and that is the main reason to support them. 700hp is way more than I would know what to do with. The only reason for the E85 was cost and availability, 30% more fuel and 40% cheaper than premium, plus it smells good 😂! Thanks for all of the great information.
I don't know that I have read anything bad about Torq Storm, people seem to like them.
@@silentbravo
I haven't seen anything bad either, I just wanted to get some feedback. I have looked at them and they are a nice piece of hardware.
@@mikelevandoski843 Matt from Sloppy Mechanics has put one on his latest build and I think he was really liking it when I watched last
they work well
Steve Morris always says making power on a turbo motor is easy. Making it live at that power is the hard part. 😂
Wow...
I'd like to see if it's possible to get "aftermarket head results" with 317 heads and dome pistons. Would it be possible to get even more flow with bigger intake valves and some trimming around the intake valve? Meaning some material removed from the combustion chamber around the intake valve so flow is more so equal all around the intake valve. After some porting to the 317 heads, of course. 317 heads are dirt cheap and using dome pistons may be a cheat code to make the best out of an item that's usually discarded. Also, its mentioned on forums, but I want to make sure. Are 317 and 243/ 799 heads the same except for the difference in combustion chamber size?
chamber size and design are different on 317
LOL the irony of the "turbo cam" T-shirt!
Wait wait wait... #turbocam! every cam is a turbo cam!
Any good Head works well with Boost. The Exhaust then becomes the possible obstruction to your combo's Max HP !
the sealing becomes the limitation due to the think deck-having a big exhaust for max power is a given
What's your take on throttle body mounted pre turbo 🤔
Hey Richard, would you ever consider testing the limits of the Honda J series v6 engines ?
see the j-series nsx swap video
I know you shared this for power capabilities but that lm7 build looks like a cheap fun daily build. Probably run ok on 87… what is the compression ratio on the LM7/317 combo?
less than 9
I’d like to see a big bang on a gen III 6.0 with a PD supercharger. I’m curious how much HP they use and what end difference is compared to a turbo at the crank when one finally lets go.
it will be much less
@@richardholdener1727 I figured it would a be a good amount of difference. I’ve never seen anyone compare the two like that and think it would be interesting to see how big of a difference it would actually be.
turbo magnum! turbo magnum! turbo magnum!
You talk about junkyard engines you run often. Do you gap the rings in all the ones you boost? Also the higher mileage ones do you typically see significantly bigger gaps with lots of miles? I’ve heard ls engines barely west rings with like 200,000 miles
mileage doesn't change gap much
So Rich, what do you think the boost limit is with the deck on the 317 head? I guess a better way to ask this question is is what do you think the limit is using these on a street motor?
people do 1000+ hp
I say it depends on if you're racing for money and how much is it worth to win that race.😅
I have a 1995 C1500 with a small block V8 350/5.7 liter. What cam would you suggest without having to change the spring and so forth. That gives a little bit of chop and improves performance.
YOU WILL NEED SPRINGS
Not bad being that this is a monster cam for a 5.3
The 317 has a much slower combustion chamber and this will definitely be a benefit in a pump gas combo.
Hey richard quick question . the vortec 7.4 do you think that intake would be friendly do water meth ? Unless I go all out and make a custom intake i cant intercooler my whipple
should be better than truck ls-and better than no intercooler
@@richardholdener1727 was going to put a street friendly boost roller cam and roller rockers in it with brodix oval port heads to keep the port velocity high because I will tow with it and have fun with it . its getting an nv4500 and a humvee awd tcase. With the aluminum heads and water meth my tuner and i believe we can get away with 89 octane at 4 to 5 psi
ventilated windage tray
Would love to see what a stock but fresh LQ9 with a small turbo ,low boost ish towing motor would do.
Realistic low to mid rpm range that would make mass quantities between 2 and 4 thousand rpm for passing on hills stuff.
Everyday joe towing a 1 car trailer at 70mph in the wind and hills type stuff.
One for the working man you know?
A boost level for a 100k mile plus longetivity motor...not all of us can afford a diesle
see the many vids up on boost with stock 4.8l and 5.3l
Base engine +- 8.49-1 SCR assuming a .000” deck height. But still made 448hp 398tq 🤔🤔🤔
Would some ported 317 heads be good for an LSA setup? I have a LQ4 block with flat top pistons and a 222/224 comp cam. Would like some input.
lsa swap should get some rec ports to match the blower manifold or ported 317s but you have to run adapters
@richardholdener1727 thanks for the reply. I was wondering if the 317 a good setup with a Root style charger. Or should I be looking turbo for boost?
Yes, finally. :)
If I told you a local hero has a street driven Volvo 244 with a 331CID Lm7 with home ported 862 heads and twin 69mm BW turbos running C16 achieved 163 mph @ 1/4 mile running 100.7% duty on 1230 ccm injectors and AFR 11.8:1 for 183 lb/min airflow. BTR stage 2 TT cam.
It has been together for 2 years and he did Street Week Sweden last year. The heads did lift a little bit at 36 psi of boost, but not more than he could carry on with the event to the end. :) Based on fuelflow and airflow we are guestimating about 1550 hp. What do you think?
Oh yes, pretty low compression ratio in this one. Otherwise the engine would be broken for sure. ;)
ua-cam.com/video/VB4uOzEq_F8/v-deo.html
Obviously it is making big steam for a 163-mph trap speed. very cool
Waaaaa
have you ever tested a milled or ported 317 heads?
the 1543-hp twin turbo 6.0l had ported 317s
Would the heads hold on with 1/2 inch head studs ?
it's not a head stud problem, it's a deck thickness problem.
Oobie doobie! 1482 hp and climbing with a 317 head? It was really good until it wasn't
Guess who’s back?! Muhahahaha!!
Squirrels?
Sic Burnz
Okay I have a Question Can I put 6.0 317 heads on a small block 5.7 liter engine?
If you mean 5.7L LS1-then yes, if you mean previous generation SBC 5.7L (aka 350), then NO
What was the compression ratio on that 6.2
