  • Hi Everyone, I hope you enjoy watching this Ruth Rendell mystery. As I have uploaded all the Inspector Wexford's that I can, this is one of Ruth Rendell's other novel adaptations. I'd like to say a big thank you to Per, a subscriber, who gave me this copy. In the original broadcast this adaption was in two parts, I have edited them into one to keep it consistent with all the other Ruth Rendell uploads.
I won't give too much away in this Ruth Rendell mystery but there are many beautiful shots of Winchester Cathedral.
Thank you to everyone who has subscribed to this UA-cam Channel.

She's underrated because she wrote genre fiction, but Ruth Rendell was one of the UK's best writers of the last 50 years.

I’ve been a Rendell fan for decades now. A librarian friend surprised me once by frowning when l praised Rendell and she mentioned she wasn’t ALWAYS happy with the author’s work. In my enthusiasm l hadn’t realized how dark her work can be…but it’s astonishing and genius

This is probably my favourite Rendell mystery. I like how preoccupied Elvira was with her sinister plans so that she didn't have time for dating etc. And in the end, when she finally did, the other sister started to slide into madness. I find it boring when stories about young people focus on dating and falling in love. Here dating was kept completely in the margin.

So Elvira is planning to rat-poison Dr Truin, Mary Leonard, and (perhaps) Luke. I've forgotten the plotline. And Elvira is a peeping Tomasina. Both sisters are psychopaths. I don't like this kind of psychodrama. It's not a detective story, just twisted.

Sixteen-year-old Elvira's mother is dead. Elvira is sad, of course, but not so sad as her younger sister Spinny. Spinny is afraid their father, Luke, will be heartbroken, but Elvira knows better -- after all, Luke has her to take her mother's place. But then Luke brings home a pretty young woman and introduces her as his fiancee, and Elvira decides that she will stop at nothing to stop her father's marriage . . . - IMDB

That last sentence. These people really have no family feeling, no moral conscience at all: just privilege and surface“ sheen; they’re all “devices and desires.” They caught the devil in fact, not in folklore. The sorts of people who hung Wicca when they were in fact the evil ones. Rendell/Vine is great at showing you this in the pretty and the rich, our so called betters.

Film adaptations of Ruth Rendell are often disappointing. The interior monologues are such an important part of understanding the psychology of the characters, and even moving the plot. The original story is much more subtle, ambiguous and therefore more disturbing. TV being more visual than cerebral has to compensate with more drama and even, I think in this one, changing the story.

Just a thought but the film showcases what a classic anorexic Elvira is. sShe got a smaller portion at lunch and spent time pinching herself in the mirror, and is examining the extra flesh saying she hated it. Then the scene where she pulled up a floorboard to spy below. Did the ceiling of that room not have plaster, but an unnoticed hole? Not likely, as it was very lavish. Lots of Anglican advertisement.

I know I'm running against the grain here but, I honestly don't understand how anyone decided to film these novels. Great cast in this one (unlike the Wexfords which are so badly acted) but the story is just ridiculous. Creepy father/daughter relationship, ridiculous plot, and it was pretty obvious halfway through who the killer was. (Because she appeared to be the only sane one.) Thanks for posting as I will watch any British murder mystery but no patch on all the Morse series or Midsomer or Rosemary and Thyme, just to name a few.

    • @Farmgirl-iy9zc
      @Farmgirl-iy9zc 2 роки тому +1

@33ForestAve I am in complete agreement. Retired last year and have been rewatching, or catching for the first time, a bunch of mysteries. Complete Midsomer, Morse, Lewis, Endeavor, Rosemary & Thyme (met Felicity Kendall at my airport job and again on a street in London! She was quite lovely.) Also Poirot and Miss Marple (haven't quite seen all of those yet - 3 different Marples involved in 2 series.) Love all of them. Also saw (but none nearly as good as the above) Cracker, Wexford, Inspector Alleyn, Wycliffe. Try Vexed sometime. 2 short seasons. Toby Stephens is pretty funny as a lackadaisical, very unprofessional cop. It's more about the relationship between the two cops than the mystery itself. If not on UA-cam some stuff might be on a nice little site called tubitv or pluto, both free.

    • @Farmgirl-iy9zc

@33ForestAve OMG - just found Secrets and Lies - I watched it already!! (That's what happens when you watch one after another with no break!! Making up for all the years I was working 60-80 hour weeks and watched next to nothing!) Anyway, i do think I liked it. Looks like there might be a second season; will look closer. I have no TV and no nuthin'! I was working so much, didn't pay to replace it when it died. So I'm on a laptop (my upstairs neighbor lets me use her wifi - I was on dial-up before!! That's how much of a Luddite I am!) No streaming services so I just paddle around the free sites to see what I can find. Meanwhile, I should be clearing out all my hoarder's junk from the apartment instead of watching all this stuff!! Thanks for the recommendations. All the best from Brooklyn!! (But, eventually...Ireland. Boyfriend is there - 29 years long-distance!! Why rush into anything....?!)

Of the Ruth Rendell stories this was the worst. I suppose if you are into psychiatric thrillers it might be of interest but I found it a huge disappointment.

These non-Wexford "Mysteries" are never as interesting and well-constructed as the Wexford tales. To me, they lack a 'centre', with a jumble of lightweight characters milling about and giving little discernible direction to the plot....

Ann S below: good grief again....you talk about dark and unhealthy and sick. I have yet to see the actor who plays "Luke" in a "normal" role...there is always a sinister edge to his performances.

Holy mackerel, are there any british series without priests + religous "stuff"; it's more than boring.... But it's great to see the young Emily Mortimer, also loved her in The Newsroom

Anglican music, the Anglican prayer book, the King James Bible, liturgical art and cathedral architecture shouldn’t bore anyone. In fact if that bores you all western history and art must do the same.

These productions are quite awful. All Rendell's nuance and atmosphere, her humor are missing. They dumb down the work by inserting simple and annoying melodrama and the DOPs do no service to the original intent. The book is wonderful. A most unreliable narrator whose madness is almost funny.

No they are the opposite of judeochristian upbringing which creates the tension in the story.
