My Tokoi Waza. Works very well when you miss timing for Kouchi Gari!

"1/5th guard" 😂😂😂 Fine. I'll hit that like button just for that.

I love the makikomi although they're pretty dangerous to one's training partners especially if there's a size difference. I apologize to everyone whose ribs I bruised when I first learned these

Gotta love Shintaro, who's a BJJ blackbelt, asking what a half guard is. Lol

I've noticed that when people go for this throw at our dojo on my right leg I can usually either pivot left on my left leg or hop it backwards and hook their attacking foot with my right forcing them sideways onto their backs. Is this a good counter or is it just possible due to poor technique/weight difference (I'm at generally least 20% heavier than the attacker)?

Terere used to do a version of this that is very safe for BJJ as far as the landing position goes. Someone else here in the comments asked about it in reference to the arm position across the waist. Not sure if it chains as well with Seoi Nage, but would love to hear your thoughts on it if you check it out. He used to call it "safada", which means something like "nasty" in Portuguese, if I remember correctly. Thanks again for the video, great stuff as always.

I would translate it to "naughty"

yes, Terere himself has stated that he was a huge Toshihiko Koga fan and started doing the Kouchi Makikomi after watching Koga do it many times in video, but he would always land in an unfavorable position, giving up his back, which is not a problem in Judo but it's a big problem in BJJ. So he modified it, which lessens the effectiveness of the throw but also opens up for follow up leg attacks that are not allowed in Judo.

for bjj, Is there a reason that you woudn't let go of the tricep and go to the hip with the right arm?

If you can time it to get the far side underhook cool, but that type of position does leave you open to certain counters like the John Wayne Sweep, Omaplata, etc. . .
For BJJ, I don't think it's actually that bad, because with two grips on the collar you can pin their shoulder to the mat and work back to half guard, just like countering someone's arm drag.
I think the best detail here is how Shintaro quickly puts the head across to the other side . . . Sometimes Judoka get lazy and keeping the head forward into the Shoulder (in the direction of the throw) is how you get you back taken or armbarred.

@@cameronforbes2649 thanks fellow Forbes clansman 😊 Watching this again going to the hip on the far side is more likely off the arm drag. This version you’re committed to the near side.
