I got the idea for this from one of the special features on the "PDQ Bach in Houston: We Have a Problem" DVD, where they do something similar for the "Unbegun" Symphony. I'm sure I missed a few IDs, and one or two I had to accept on the faith of a few lists I was working off of. If you notice any, corrections can be made.
Genius. Thank you. I always knew this piece was insanely clever, but seeing all its secrets revealed was marvellous. Much appreciated.
'By Peter Schickele (1935- ), Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791), et al. '
And Al? who's he? Oh - Weird Al Yankovic. makes perfect sense. thanks.
Thanks a lot for the subtitles! A few corrections that I could suggest: The correct french title for Twinkle Twinkle is «Ah, vous dirais-je maman». The title of the galop by Offenbach is “Orpheus in the Underworld“, unless there's another turn in the story with Hades that I'm not aware of... :P And at 11:22, there is an excerpt of the 5th symphony by Beethoven.
The way Schickele mashes The Thunderer, Mozart's own 41st Symphony, Dvorak's New World Symphony, Brahms 4th Symphony and Dixie into the 1st movement is simply glorious!
all of Peter Schickele's works for the fictional character pdq Bach is like ein musikalischer spaß (a musical joke) by Mozart on steroids
istg if Peter Schickele makes another piece like this but on Mozart’s Musical Joke, I’m going to lose it 🤣
The 'Jupiter' quote is so wonderfully smooth... wow.
This is a wonderfully useful reference. Well done!
The original high-quality rip.
They forgot the Flintstones theme
Dammit. I can never hear the real version without hearing O Susanna.
"O Susanna" is a small part of the libretto for "The Abduction of Figaro".
just some I caught: 3:52 Sounds like ending of Beethoven's 5th Symphony. 3:55 the extra F# by the woodwinds could be referencing Beethoven Symphony 6's transition from 3rd to 4th mvt. 8:21 sounds like Prokofiev Symphony No. 5.. not sure though. 10:37 Ah Vous...etc is by Mozart, 11:22 Beethoven Symphony 5 First Mvt in the flutes/piccolo? Great video by the way! Without this video I won't be able to recognize all the themes.
The Petrushka quote is the best
I agree.
I would say both that and the Till Eulenspiegel quote at the end.
@@michaweinst3774 I love the Anvil Chorus quote in the slow movement
Most fun my ears have had in ages!
2:58 the high woodwinds are playing "Goodbye Old Paint"
THANK YOU!
I heard "Can Can" in there towards the end.
that's the galop from orpheus in hades
this is better than the real piece
ikr
original piece is too calm
8:56 piccolo melody is a tune from Beethoven's Razumovsky nº2, the String Quartet Op.59 n.2, trio from 3rd movement.
10:55 Note how the bulk of the development & recapitulation sections of movt. 4 of original Nachtmusik have now been efficiently redacted into the much briefer Petrushka trumpet soli!
AMAZING.
1:25 is probably Bartok's concerto for orchestra (fanfare theme from the last movement).
SiIvaGunner before SiIvaGunner
Очаровательно!
There is also the Big Ben melody at 11:20 played by the French Horn
don't know, sounds like a theme from beethoven's fifth symphony
7:04: I always think Navy Hymn will come after that, but nope.
You missed the Mikado overture at 10:19
#Kurzgesagt should do an episode about this Bach
the end of the first mov. is like the attaca between the 3 & 4th mov. of beethoven 6th
11:22 also has Beethoven Symphony No. 5
I'm in pain with laughter!
@AlanvYYolinC Sorry, 10:37 Ah Vous (Twinkle Twinkle) it's not by Mozart (he only made variations).. It's a french folk song..
I was thinking of doing the same thing but instead made it a music quiz for readers of my postings at Multiply.com groups.
Maybe you can help me. I am searching for the PDQ takeoff on the Romanza movement of Mozart's Gran Partita, Serenade for Winds K. 361. I don't know which album to purchase at Amazon.com. Do you know the PDQ title for that takeoff?
절묘한 조화! 그래도 바탕에 깔려있는 모짜르트의 음악은 궃궃하게 제소리를 잃지 않네요.
Lots of fun, thank you. but please correct the spellings of some of the composers and names of the works.
I just came here because were playing a band solo on this at school...
I'm inclined to knock music.
wouldn't "a little nothing-music" be nearly 12 minutes of quiet?
+John Beam NEARLY nothing. Fluff!
From my high-school German classes, I recall "nicht" meaning "not". "A little not-music" could just mean something that's mostly, but not entirely, music. (And google's English to German translation tool give "nichts" for "nothing", not "nicht". Pretty close though, I can definitely see where a misunderstanding could creep in for words that similar.)
+John Beam I have always assumed it was a pun. Nicht sounds a lot like "Nicked" which would fit because everything in this piece is "Nicked" from another piece.
LOL!
