On the Tonight Show, Mr. McKuen once told Johnny Carson, "My voice makes people want to clear their throats." It DID, but then he'd sing or recite his poetry, and there wasn't a more beautiful voice on the entire continent. Damn, I do miss him.
I attended a seminar in Chicago in 1974. Rod was performing at the restaurant where I had dinner. I sincerely wish the songs of this year (generation) were more like his, but as all things on this earth they are there only for a little while. At the age of 79, I would like to encourage everyone to listen to the music of yesterday. Much to be learned.
Thanks to UA-cam for keeping alive the great singers of the past... and thanks to those who post clips. Rod is one of the better singers from years gone by.
My Mom went to school in Oakland, Ca. with Rod. Years ago he went to a high school reunion and took my my Mom home in his limo. He professed to having a crush on her. What a wonderful man!
So beautifully done. Yes, you are right, what a wonderful world it is. You will be missed by many. Music is so very powerful. I hear your songs and they transport me back in time to happy memories. Till we meet again, may you R.I.P.
A salute, and a huge Thank You sir, for making this World...just a little bit better. The seconds of our life fly so quickly. You will be missed. God Bless. See you soon.
Me too. I discovered Rod and "The Sea" about 1966.The greatest poet and songwriter to have ever lived in my opinion. I have many of his albums and books. Love him, RIP beautiful man.XXXX
I feel only love for you! You accompanied me for a long time in my life till you went to your final destination! RIP! You'll be always with us! Nothing and nobody gets ever lost!
Even though we only spent a few days and nights together you brought so much love and sorrow to me. I loved you so much but time got in the way. That first morning waking with you dropping red rose petals on me. The letters and phone calls that told me you cared then silence. I loved you then as I love you now with every fibre of my being. Rest in peace my darling man and know you still live deep in my heart.
I've listened and read Rod McKuen since 1966 or whenever it was that I discovered his insight .. I know he didn't write this song, but part of the magic is his interpretation .. it's been a long time since 1966, but its still magic.
Always loved his music and poetry, I saw him live I think in the early 80's when he toured my home country of New Zealand. Loved this song, his version is as good as Louis Armstrong.
Yes, in San Francisco. Always loved him. What a delight to look for Rod AND FIND HIM! Thanks for your beautiful poetry and music. I’ll still hear you as you Rest In Peace
Yes, Heaven IS here ["here" meaning within each of us]. Again,, you got it. If any individual does not create heaven from them, they WILL have to leave. The coming Age of Enlightenment will not support them.
I can't think of a better non Mckuen song that easily could have been something he would write. Rod may have thought, "I wish I'd have written that one".
thank you so much . Rod has always been my favorite as of a teenager when I was 16...Some songs one can never forget. Such a message to the actual state our world is such a mess today. I would more than recommend you the actual rendition from Jackie De Shannon.. What the world needs love is what sweet love..This will give shivers down your spine..If you have other songs you relate to so intense...Write to me! I do not usually give my Email address michelamgeloxoxo076@gmail.com Thank you Dennis.
I met him too - sort of. It was after seeing a performance with him. We happened to be shopping at the same Safeway. He was in the checkout line when I spotted him. I walked up and simply looked at him, not knowing what to say. I stood there for quite a few minutes. He avoided looking at me. I'm sure I made him uncomfortable, but I had no words. So I just stood there. I'll say it now - thank you, Rod, for all the beautiful songs and the way you touched all my passions of that age. You reached deep into my heart.
I wish the date of this wonderful performance was posted here, so we'd know when this was. Is it really that difficult to post it? Many videos on you tube don't post the dates of the performances and I just don't understand why they don't, it's annoying.
anyone else annoyed by how loud and bad the drummer was? what the hell was this beat on the 4? The og recording with Louis Armstrong is just a normal drum beat but this guy had to take it and turn into this nothing beat with a loud CLACK on 4 or whatever instead. Terrible. obviously it may have been written for him but dear lord it distracted me this should have been in a nice easy 4/4 like original. maybe it was recorded bad

Life is not measured by the breaths we take but by the moments that take our breath away.

The passing of Rod McKuen left a void in the world of musical entertainment. He is not easily forgotten, and we are the less without him.
My Mom went to school in Oakland, Ca. with Rod. Years ago he went to a high school reunion and took my my Mom home in his limo. He professed to having a crush on her. What a wonderful man!
