Solitude becomes a way of life when you grow old. Most of my friends are gone. Losing the love of your life after 40 years tears you apart. Covid doesn't help. All my memories are all I can count on to make me happy. The photographs are there, but they always bring tears to my tired eyes. I try to do what Rod always said to do when times aren't too good. Pull back those memories that gave you happiness and life. So now I do that. I even whisper their name, but that just makes me cry too. Along with a great love, comes great pain. They are inseperable. So it's solitude for now.
I agree completely with you, fob1xxl. I'm 82, been widowed twice (both deeply cherished), lost my parents, both of my brothers and countless friends and extended family members. It's the price we pay for love and longevity, and like you, I'm so grateful for all the wonderful, treasured memories and photographs. Life, well-lived, is so very precious.
Thank you Rod McKuen, I'm born on 1987 but listened to all your songs in my childhood because of my dad. It was the best memory when he played this album at the time I went to bed.
I met Rod McKuen in the '70's and had an autographed book. I met my husband soon after and he reminded me of Rod. We married and he has since passed, six months before Rod died. They are both together discussing what is it all about? Rod McKuen will always be my favorite. I had seasons in the sun!
One of the greatest singer song writers, I can listen to him all day; memories live forever! Thank you Rod McKuen you were my daily companion for so many years, so many have passed, but the joy you gave me will be with me to the end.
Beautifully put. The memories of Rod McKuen linger forever, a Gentle Soul who gave so much of himself to those who understood the beauty of his words and the man himself. Tomorrow the Birthday of Rod McKuen April 29, 1933.
Rod McKuen will always be my favorite poet, composer and the one person who wrote in a way that understood the human condition and he understood life. He was amazing as a writer, composer and as a human being. We shared similar childhoods and ways we lived life. We shared in how we viewed life and how we handled life. We both wanted to find the same things. I related to him because he wrote in a manner that reached inside my heart and life, understood what I had been through and he seemed to know those who he wrote for. He wrote mostly for himself and out of a need to process feelings, emotions and a lifelong journey to find love. I cherish every word he ever wrote and he is my greatest inspiration for what I write and how I write for every word I am able to publish and in turn it reaches others and helps them in their lives. Without reading his work and listening with my heart as my soul rang out in learning, I would not be able to write today. It is my joy to have learned so much from such a talened, authentic and genuine man.

Dear Mr Patrick Huang Thank you so, so much for the Lyrics of this beautiful song. The song is so beautiful and the lyrics will penetrate right through your heart. Rod Mc Kuen was such a wonderful man. I have love him for some 40 years. Thank you very much Shamanvu
Faces, there are, I haven't seen faces, there are, I'll never see, but what a waste it would've been, had I been anyone but me Still, if I seem a little proud my head will often bend. One sees someone in a cloud, I'll never hope to comprehend. Oh no! I'm not alone, although solitude is my home I try to beg the hand of hell, sometimes when silence gets too rough. All I can offer is myself that never seems to be enough and yet there are some men who killed for less than someone's hand.
At some things, I can only guess and never hope to understand No! I'm not alone, although solitude is my home I turn my face toward the wind and shuffle down the darkened street with winter coming on again There is no telling who I'll meet. Perhaps that I would open up to hope be, for a while Who knows what waits within the night. Beneath the surface of a smile Oh no! I'm not alone, though I know solitude is my home No! I'm not alone, although solitude is my home
Rod McKuen taught me how to write his style of poetry too tell the storyes of mymlufe. His pietry changed my lufe. Writung is my healing catharsis and his style lends itself to cathartic healing.
true. it comes from a feeling deep inside that flows in and out with the tide. sadness is a gift sometimes, like winter on nature, growth can and does follow.
Wow, a truly beautiful song. Pallas Huang, thank you so much for posting the wordsw to this song. It is one I never heard before. The words are so very powerful. I have spent the last two hours just listening to song after song of Rod's. He was such a genius and such a prolific writer. His words and music will live on forever. R.I.P. Rod, you will be missed!
I too listen to him all the time. He was amazing and he was magical and he was a miracle to my life. I have all of his books and all of his LP's and all of his music. He touched me like no one else, but God, could touch me. I am forever grateful for a man who was so emotionally naked and so real that we can all relate to what he had to say and his deeply felt message of hope. love and belief wrapped in a faith in life and love.
Above The Pounding Of The Rain, Beyond The Rolling Of The Sea A Thousand People Know My Name, And One Or Two May Yet Know Me. There In The Middle Of The Night I'll Find A Friendly Face, And I'll Be Taken Back Again To Some New Loving Place And No, Not Be Left Alone, Although Solitude's My Home. Faces There Are I Haven't Seen, Faces There Are I'll Never See. But What A Waste It Would Have Been Had I've Been Anyone But Me. Still If I Seem A Little Proud, My Head Will Often Bend On Seeing Someone In A Crowd I'll Never Hope To Comprehend. Oh, No, I'm Not Alone, Although Solitude Is My Home. I Try To Beg The Hand Of Help Sometimes When Silence Gets Too Rough. All I Can Offer Is Myself, That Never Seems To Be Enough.
Emotional 🙏
Thank you so much Pallas Huang for the lyrics. And you, etudes6, for posting this beautiful song.

Rod was not alone, but I think he was profoundly lonely. Else he could not have written such melancholy songs.

Above The Pounding Of The Rain,
Beyond The Rolling Of The Sea
A Thousand People Know My Name,
And One Or Two May Yet Know Me.
There In The Middle Of The Night
I'll Find A Friendly Face,
And I'll Be Taken Back Again
To Some New Loving Place
And No, Not Be Left Alone,
Although Solitude's My Home.
Faces There Are I Haven't Seen,
Faces There Are I'll Never See.
But What A Waste It Would Have Been
Had I've Been Anyone But Me.
Still If I Seem A Little Proud,
My Head Will Often Bend
On Seeing Someone In A Crowd
I'll Never Hope To Comprehend.
Oh, No, I'm Not Alone,
Although Solitude Is My Home.
I Try To Beg The Hand Of Help
Sometimes When Silence Gets Too Rough.
All I Can Offer Is Myself,
That Never Seems To Be Enough.
And Yet There Are Some Men Who Kill
For Less Than Someone's Hand,
At Some Things I Can Only Guess
And Never Hope To Understand.
No, I'm Not Alone,
Although Solitude Is My Home.
I Turn My Face Toward The Wind,
And Shuffle Down The Darkened Street.
With Winter Coming On Again,
There's No Telling Who I'll Meet.
Perhaps A Love Will Open Up
To Hold Me For A While.
Who Knows What Waits Within The Night.
Beneath The Surface Of A Smile,
Oh, No, I'm Not Alone,
Though I Know Solitude Is My Home.
No, I'm Not Alone,
Although Solitude Is My Home.

Beautiful
Above the pounding if the rain,
beyond the rolling of the sea
A thousand people know my name,
though one or two may have known me
There in the middle of th night,
I'll find a friendly face and
I'll be taken back again to some
new loving place and no, not be left alone.
Although, solitude is my home
Version extraordinaria, como todo lo de Rod Mckuen, que aparecio en su 1 LP,por lo menos en España,Le Meteque.McKuen era muy afrancesado, espléndido
A very haunting performance from a giant of music. Dorothy Squires also did a great version of this song.
목소리에 끌려서...

Ma Solitude, Georges Moustaki. Should have been mentioned...
I think this song was written and sung in French by Georges Moustaki as "Ma solitude" around 1969. Check here on UA-cam.
