I remember seeing him in the 80s in concert. He came with Night Ranger and I remember everybody booing him. I don’t understand why he’s a great singer and great music.
I was 17 the summer of 84 when this song came out. Good times!!!! Drinking California Coolers lime flavored. Later they came out with orange. Getting stoned and hanging out at the lake with friends.
It's been a tradition and a tip of my hat to a fallen friend to listen to this song every year; Tony Carey and Planet P were staples in our "cassette" rotation - never missed a first day of summer, to be sure.
Until yesterday, I hadn't heard this song in 30 years. I was sure this song was something I made up in my 6-year-old mind, but I never really forgot it. Yesterday, somebody provided a link to this page on Facebook, and as soon as I saw the name of the song, I KNEW it had to be what I heard all those years ago, and it was! This just goes to show you that you never know what life has in store for you.
i forgot this song for Decades until i saw an Interview Of Tony Of His rainbow days & Thought That name Sounds Familiar & Yes this was a Great Tune then & Now!!!!!!!
Happy Summer Solstice 2024! Just read today is earliest in over 200 years. Get outside, enjoy the rays, and absolutely watch this video! Im 53 and started keeping the link on my phone calendar to send to my two boys, who are teenagers, every 1st day of summer. 🌞🌡 Gotta keep this tradition going! 😎
Tony Carey was 2 years behind me in HS (Staples HS in Westport, Connecticut, subject of the doc "The High School That Rocked"). First time I saw him perform, he opened for the Byrds @ our school in July of 1971, w/ a cover of Elton John's "Amoreena" that blew me away.
I grew up in the Bridgeport area. I had no idea that Tony was from Westport. My brother and I heard it for the first time on Top 40 Videos before we even had cable.
.....met him that year following his West Hartford Agora Ballroom show; had as I remember TWO of Michael Schenker's sidemen (? HE had a date there in '84 TOO, though - so, COULD be COMBINING recollections after all these years.....) on that tour - was incredibly GRACIOUS.....
I recall they were playing it this a lot at the END of that summer (1984), and I had to go back to frikkin' SCHOOL! I wished it was the first day of summer again!
First Friday in May, is Real Summer, First Friday in August is the last weekend. Back to school sales start after 4th July weekend. Song came out 1984, 40 years ago.
I was a teenager in the mid-1980s and have a clear memory of "A Fine Fine Day." Have several copies of the single. Was completely unfamiliar with this track but it's incredibly heartwarming to see how many people have cherished memories of it. Been listening to it and managed to pick up a copy of the single a few weeks ago in a small stash of free records.
"Some Tough City" was my first encounter with Tony Carey's music. I majored in Radio/TV Broadcasting in college and the songs from this album remained in our rotation for several months.
DAAAAMN! The great memories with music from Tony Carey! This is early College USC (Pueblo) . Met a college sweetheart and married her and it lasted 24 years. Divorced now for 8 years from her but I still have this song. 😂 Her or the song? Song of course silly🍺
I recently rediscovered this song listening to a cassette tape I labeled "Summer of 84" when I recorded music off of the radio back in 1984. That tape hasn't been played in decades and still sounded great.
Tony was an awesome songwriter and this is the kind of DEEP hidden 80s song you'd have to either be at least 10 in 1984 or the biggest hipster in the world to know about.
The whole "Some Tough City" album is great! I remember I just happened upon it, on cassette, a few years after it came out, for about $2. I picked it up, not knowing what to expect, and I fell in love with it! Then, a few years later, I lost it! I found out that the album was long out of print, and pretty hard to find. But I had to have it, so I eventually wound up paying about $20 for the import CD!
I kinda had the same thing happen to me too. Back in 2003 I found an old tape with 1984 recordings off a local rock station...some popular hits and some obscure stuff like this. I'd never heard of Tony before, but I loved it right away. I found this whole album later too and its filled with great AOR songs.
Renaissance Records has ALL of Tony Carey's albums digitally remastered/restored and available for purchase on our website!! - renaissancerecordsus.com/buycds.html
For those of us who first heard this song in 1983, I think because it was first released by itself with out an album. It may have been on an album later, but it was first just a single by itself and nothing else.
June 1984. I’d just moved into my new apartment in Northford, CT. That time is indelibly etched into my brain. I’d give a finger to go back to that time.
67marlins, I'm from Baltimore, and so do I remember this from 1983. It was around the time Planet P. came out also. Thanks for saying that. I had just finished my first year of high school when this was popular and 98 rock radio station played it a lot. Peace from Baltimore.
Thanks Deborah!!! I swore I heard it in Summer 1983, so when I saw the album was 1984 I questioned my normally good memory. The difference between the Summer after 10t grade and 11th seemed HUGE back then. Today, living in Massachusetts those 98 Rock memories overlap a bit.... Have a great Autumn.
Heard this song from the movie "Secret Admirer" when C.Thomas Howell and Casey Siemasko walk into that frat party to meet up with Kelly Preston and Lori Loughlin.
I was 14 when this came out and it always reminds me of the freedom of summer. My boys are 13 and 16 and I emailed them the video link to this last night and told them to add the date, video link, and repeat to watch every year--on that *first day of summer* 😎 Have to keep the traditions going @KingLear!! Way to start the party again in 2022 🤙
I have to give credit to (80's) MTV because if not for them I would have missed out on a lot of great music from this era. This is one of the songs I would have missed. My local radio stations never played this and I had 3 major metro areas I was listening to.
you recall this in 5th grade, well i recall it very clear in 84 also & i' m now 50! mtv was it in 84, a mix/ balance of huge metal bands fighting for their spins with new wave stuff, the police, lauper, madonna& fackson, gag!but, it all worked, great days indeed.
C’mon younger generation! Let’s take life back to the 80s! I spent my high school years in the 80s and take my word for it, your lives will change if you get your mindset right. #80srule
I meant to listen to this again today on the first day of Summer beings I heard it for the first time the other day after scrolling and listening to "What Fine Fine Day." Happy 1st day of Summer everyone.
My husband played this song every year since 1984. I played it today to honor him.
Is he still alive? That's weird.
@@Frip36 I am guessing that if she is honoring her husband, he has passed away.
On every June 21st, I go back and play this video to kick-off the summer. The summer of '84 was awesome.

I'll be posting this on my FB page.. 😃
I always do!
Summer of ‘84, right after A Fine Fine Day. Good times.
Tony Carey is a straight-up genius. Someone who actually writes LYRICS, not to mention the amazing music. Rock on...
I remember seeing him in the 80s in concert. He came with Night Ranger and I remember everybody booing him. I don’t understand why he’s a great singer and great music.
I remember him and night ranger in buckeye lake Ohio those days was the days
No real Rock fan would ever boo Tony Carey. That's just straight-up ignorant of those fools.
The only day of the year when this song is truly appropriate.
Like if you listened to this song in 1984.
heh
Class of 84! Best year ever
I remember growing up in the rio grande valley listening to this 99.5 KRIX Life was great, what the hell happened?
Roel Abrego You don’t have that long.
Actually I remember this from his EP release in summer of 1983...
I was very young in the 80s baby and remember this song from Secret Admire. 80s baby’s in their 40s now.
I was 17 the summer of 84 when this song came out. Good times!!!! Drinking California Coolers lime flavored. Later they came out with orange. Getting stoned and hanging out at the lake with friends.

Hard to believe the "First Day Of Summer" happened 40 years ago!
This tune by Tony Carey is really an underrated song and video!
Tony Carey Is A Talented Musician
This Is 1 Of My Favorite Songs By Him . The Other Was " A Fine Fine Day "
In Phoenix they so over played Fine Fine Day, just ruined it. But this song and Why Me and Vigilante are still great listens.
Why are you leaving out Rainbow? He was the keyboardist with Ronnie James Dio in Rainbow, Ritchie Blackmore too.
One of those killer 80's songs....can't get it out of my head.....my band is learning it now and hope to be jamming with it soon
Summer ain't summer till you listen to this song!
Hahahaha, yeah, well I make the pilgrimage each year to this video so yep!
