Lol!!! “I’m very distressed and would like to speak to a manager” 😂😂😂
'This is going to be a quick one..." *16 mintues later* LOL
dude its quick for the amount of books I was talking about
I know I kid!! Just thought it was funny...also...that Wild Beauty book sounds a little like a book I read last year called 'The Careful Undressing of Love' where the women on this one street are cursed, if they love someone they will die. It was very magical realism-esk. I get what you meant by magical realism being more of a feeling or emotional experience that is hard to explain.
Glad you finally got around to Station Eleven. You’re right that some readers didn’t get its approach to apocalyptic storytelling. It’s all about rebuilding and hopefulness, and the way art is the thread that holds civilization together and binds past to present to future.
"I'm very distressed, I'd like to speak to a manager." *instantly subscribed* haha I'm sorry you're sick!
That's such a great description of magical realism! Sometimes when I read a book that falls into that genre it's so hard to describe the feeling I'm left with that it's difficult to rate. And yay! I'm so glad you loved Station Eleven!
I'm so so happy to have found you! I've been binging your videos a bit these last couple of days and you are by far the most closely aligned to what I value in a book. And you make me think about stuff I might not otherwise! Thank you so much for being you and sharing your thoughts here on UA-cam, you really bless the community♡
aw thank you so much for the kind words! it means a lot to me.
STATION ELEVEN! I’m so glad you loved it and I can’t wait for your review. Also, so glad you’re continuing on with The Raven Cycle! Great wrap-up, Sam! Hope you start feeling better soon. :)
Your new opinion on Chamber of Secrets made me sooooo happy! It's my favourite one from the series and it doesn't get the love it deserves!
YUP! I feel the same about magical realism. The themes stick with me, but the actual plot just melts away for me.
And that's a wrap up. How do you manage to read so much? So many reviews I have to watch from you! I am extremely glad you enjoy 'Station eleven' so much. To me, it was heartbreaking and it gave me an incredible perspective about living with technology.
You are so amazing, Sam
I’m currently reading The Broken Earth series because you raved about it in a prior video, I’m on book 1, and I am loooving it! Great wrap up Sam!!! Xoxo
Your nails are the bomb! I wish I could have mine that long but I’m way to rough and clumsy
No kidding! I have a dog, two cats and two boys and there's no way I could keep them nice.
I loved Station Eleven too! Read it last year and was so connected to these characters and their lives, like you said. I just bought Traitor’s Blade for my husband for his birthday - he’s really been enjoying The Lies of Locke Lamora series (on your recommendation again!) so I’m hoping he’ll like this series too... Lindsi xx
I'm really glad you loved Chamber of Secrets it my favorite Harry Potter book. I am only on book 5 in the series reading it for the first time so that might change. I get so happy when I hear someone really liked Chamber of Secrets because it doesn't get alot of love.
Great video Sam, as always!!! Hope you can recover fully really soon!!! I'm so happy you read and love The Stone Sky!!! I thought it was a beautiful conclusion also, even though I knew it was going to be heartbreaking in the end, 'cause of the ending and 'cause is the final book in the trilogy 😢 Also, it was one of the very few I didn't hear you say you were let down by the ending!!! Can't wait to hear you speak more of it in a review video!!!
Everyone always thinks Chamber of Secrets is like their least favorite of the Harry Potter books and I’m so glad you didn’t because Chamber of Secrets is awesome!!! I agree there are lots of connections to the later books, and it’s a delight to read about the kids while they’re still so young and sweet..
Your makeup looks so nice. love the eyeshadow. And of course your reviews are great as usual
So glad you loved Station Eleven, I still think about it ever since I've read. One scene at the airport when the planes are being grounded still haunts me
Chamber of Secrets is my favorite for the same reason! I love how it sets up so much for the last book.
I feel you. I got a cold twice in January PLUS a stomach bug. :/ Hope you feel better soon! Ooh, I really want to get to The Fifth Season and Traitor's Blade this year!
I totally relate with you on getting sick. Since January 1st I’ve had a uti, yeast infection from antibiotics, a cold, and the stomach bug twice. I would also like to speak to a manager about this lol. I haven’t read any of these books but I have station eleven and wild beauty on my tbr.
I adored the When the Moon was Ours audiobook so I’m waiting for the Wild Beauty audiobook! Really loved the authors writing so hopefully love Wild Beauty too ☺️
The Station Eleven audiobook is one of my favourites. Definitely top 3 alongside The Long way to a small angry planet and The Night Circus!
Wild Beauty is the first book I have read by McLemore and I loved it! I gave it 5 stars and quickly bought When the Moon Was Ours and The Weight of Feathers as I need to tap back into my love for magical realism. The Fifth Season trilogy sounds amazing so I will check that out. I hope you feel better soon!
Dang, you look amazing!! I love your style!
I started watching your videos this month and you are already one of my favorite booktubers, if not my favorite.
aw thank you!!
Feel better soon! 💗 I have The Fifth Season on hold at the library, I can't wait to get to it! 😊
so happy you read blue lily, lily blue and enjoyed it! that's all i have to say xD.
I love watching your channel because it helps me to find books I probably wouldn’t have seen otherwise; I’m more of a historical fiction, classics or non-fiction reader (also anything based on myths 😂) and it’s great to get an opinion on some of the fantasy or sci-fi books I would have never discovered otherwise.
thank you :)
I only read Harry Potter once also. I started again last year, and got through the Prisoner Of Azkaban. I'm with you on The Chamber Of Secrets...I really liked it, and didn't know why so many people disliked it (or rated it as their least liked). Feel better soon...sleep, sleep, sleep and vitamin C.
I agree with you on magical realism books, I love the genre but find them so hard to talk about. YES to everything you said about Station Eleven, can't wait to see your review!
I have been listening to the Raven Cycle audio books and I am now at the last book and so excited for the conclusion. :) I didn't expect to like these books so much.
I just finished Wild Beauty a few minutes ago and I totally agree, I don't care much for writing style to it was really hard to keep myself focused when reading it and it took me about 4 months to finally sit down and finish it.
your whole look!!! i am in love!!
i reread the harry potter series in 2018 and had a fun time!!! strangely chamber of secrets is my favorite in the series. i'm so glad you enjoyed it on your second read as well :))
i've heard wodnerful things about the show for american gods but the book intimidates me so much but i might try the fll cast audio book!
wild beauty and station eleven!!!
The narrator is the same for all the Raven Cycle books and he is amazing!!!
3 colds in 3 months, me too! I feel ya, get well soon
I hateeeee it
I read Wild Beauty in December and while I enjoy magical realism, I didn’t really enjoy this particular book. I love lyrical, flowery writing. However, the incessant description of every flower in every scene got really old to me, and I didn’t understand what all of the cousins saw in the girl they were all twitterpated over. I do have When the Moon Was Ours and The Weight of Feathers on my shelves and plan on reading them soon because I do think the author is super talented.
Station Eleven is wonderful. I also read it in January and it’s a new favorite. Can’t wait to hear your thoughts on it!!
yeah I think there were more plot holes in this one than there were in other books of hers
Thoughts on Tomes Yeah, my biggest problem came from the fact that very little seemed to ground the story at all. I really enjoyed The Strange and Beautiful Sorrows of Ava Lavender because while all of these fantastical things are happening, it’s grounded in the fact that the world around the characters is recognizable. I understood what point in time we were reading about and where the story was taking place and the motivations for the characters. Unfortunately, I couldn’t say the same about Wild Beauty.
I can't wait for you to read the Dreamblood duology! It's my favourite out of her series, but I feel like you'll love the Inheritance Trilogy more because PANTHEONS!
Oh no! Shadowsong is on its way to me right now! I felt the same way about the first one... gave it a 3/5 stars. I was hoping the second one would have been better than the first. 😩
I hate small spoilers too! For me EVERYTHING is a spoiler and EVERYONE just keep made spoilers to me also long time friends who know how much I hate it! And when I get angry they just tell me "calm down, this is not a spoiler.." but "GUESS WHAT EX-LONG-TIME-FRIEND?! YES! THIS IS A SPOILER!"
...
Ok, now I really need to calm down.. 😅
the hinting is the worst. like people think they aren't spoiling because they are being vague but no brenda you aren't being vague I'm clever enough to infer what you are saying pls stop
I got The Fifth Season last month and it's calling out to me :) Glad to hear that you liked the whole trilogy because I had high hopes!! Probably gonna check out Traitor's Blade too!!
good choices all around
Station Eleven was amazing! I am so glad you enjoyed it!
I'm reading The Stone Sky atm! Hope you enjoy the sequel to Traitor's Blade, I feel like the books get better and better 😊
Well, I'm planning to read The Raven Cycle in March so I have to dodge spoilers too :)
Your seal of approval makes me less worried that I won't like this series
Traitor's Blade and Station Eleven have been on my TBR for so long. I need to finally read them!
Yes, you need to read Traitor's Blade!
I keep seeing Station Eleven around, I really want to pick it up!
Hi Sam can't wait for your series review of American Gods and love your makeup too!
thank you!
Ooh the traitor’s blade sounds fun!
I’m rereading Harry Potter in the illustrated editions, so a book a year, and there really are so many fun details to rediscover
I can’t wait until you continue with Greatcoats because I trust everything out of your mouth. 😉 I want to get to this series this year too!
You're like the queen of adult fantasy to me. I'm really hesitant to pick op the 5th season because one of the perspectives is written in 2nd person and for some reason I can't deal with that. Also I'm only going to say that Blue Lily Lily Blue is my favorite raven cycle book. Hopefully you'll enjoy the last book too.
omg thank you :)))) I usually don't like second person either but if you can push through, I encourage you to do so.
Ahhh such a good list. I am reading HP through now for the first time 🙈 (Next after that will be the Raven Boys). I'm definitely going to pick up The Traitor's Blade too.
just got my hands on the dreamblood duology I am excited to get to it
Hope you feel better soon! I've been thinking about rereading HP because I also only read the books once, and it was so long ago. I've seen the movies a hundred times, of course, but I know there's so much more to the books. I pretty much never reread stuff, but I kinda want to with these.
yeah I never reread things either so this is a special case
Can we talk about your fabulous nails pls ALSO where did you get your shirt? Every time you wear it in a video I'm like WHOA that is so nice. I NEED to get to Station Eleven ASAP. It seems like a mix of a lot of things I love
American Eagle! It's from their super soft line and its so comfy. Yes girl Station Eleven is amazing
I read the cruel prince by holly black this month and I think you would really like it, there is a lot of juicy angst and a morally grey main character
The Raven Cycle is amazing on audiobook!
Wild Beauty and Station Eleven sound interesting. I hope you feel better soon :)
Im a student too so I understand about not having time to get sick. My brother is sick and I'm trying so hard not to let him get me sick.
Greetings!!! Loved The Stone Sky, 5 stars!!
Greatcoats series is a tetralogy, and Falcio is pronounced with a hard C, like falcon (you'll learn that in the second book). Feel better!
ah I hate when they don't say that until later books in the series because now the wrong pronunciation is stuck in my head
Blue Lily Lily Blue was my favorite from the series and redeemed itself after Dream Thieves.
I loved Station Eleven so much! I really need to reread it. My daughter finally read it as well, and loved it, so I finally have a real life person to talk about it with. Yea!
I feel you on spoilers. My family has finally learned that EVERYTHING is a spoiler. So just stop.
I need to read American Gods! I really enjoy Neil Gaimen's other mythology-inspired novels, so I am positive I will love it.
I am loving your mermaidesque nails! I'd be interested to hear what you think of Above Us Only Sky by Michele Young-Stone. It's a magical realism generational story (neither of which I tend to enjoy) that I loved. I feel like it did for me what other people said Ava Lavender did for them (I did read that one but didn't enjoy it at all.) I feel like Above Us Only Sky does have more plot than magical realism tends to, so I'm wondering if that's one of the reasons I loved it so much?
Congrats on your great reading month! I've read Stardust and Neverwhere but like you I've heard some mixed things about American Gods...I do love mythology though so might have to give it a try!
I haven't read Neverwhere yet but I have read Stardust. Neverwhere may be my text Gaiman if I can get it on audio.
Incubus of the Bubonic Plague would be a great crap metal band name.
Charlie Christie
Yes it would!!! LOL
Greatcoats is 4 books. And when you get to the second book (or maybe third? but I think second. Read them a year ago so details are fuzzy ), there's a whole plot line of how the main character's name is pronounced: Fal-key-oh. Sounds weird to me, but what do I know :) Great series anyway, loved it!
Oh and the fight scenes are so detailed because the writer used to be a fencing teacher/choreographer/something :)
why would they wait until book 3 to say that?!? ugh
Please do a book shelf tour! Please please please!!!
Personally I can't STAND magical realism precisely bc of what you said, the plot gets completely lost. Still it was interesting to hear your interpretation of it!
Great wrap up as always!
Yaaaay! I’m so glad you like Station 11!!! 🔥
aah, yes, glad you liked Station Eleven!
I’ve been wanting to get into Neil Gaiman books. I just picked up Stardust for a book club I’m in. I’m excited to get into the “Neil Gaiman extravaganza” if you will. I look forward to your future reviews!
Stardust was my first Gaiman!
I'm already getting ready to rereading 'The Broken Earth' trilogy, but I also want to go back and read some of her older trilogies. Right now I have my eyes set on 'Inheritance Trilogy' which starts with 'The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms'.
I want to go and restart the 'Raven Cycle' series. I listened to the first one in audio, but I wasn't a fan of the narration. So I want to start over.
I'm currently reading Blue Lily Lily Blue and I'm encouraged by what you said for this book... Tbh, I liked the way The Dream Thieves took a turn from the main plotline, but I'm ready to see what happens next, though I think I will take a break before reading the last book, because I binge-read the first three and... I need some time off
I liked the turn TDT took as well, but it left me forgetting why I cared about the main plot so BLLB definitely roped me back in.
The only I've read out of these is The Raven Cycle so I shall retreat back into my hole and refrain from saying anymore.
bless you
I'm so proud, I read 12 books this month. A lot of it was Brandon Sanderson. No shame
I’ve only read The Raven Boys, the very first one. I liked it, but I did hear it’s better to listen to them on audiobook!
yeah I really like the narrator for the series
The only one I think I have read is American Gods. I like both the book and the series. Ian McShane is amazing in anything he plays in, but I think my favorite character on TV is the leprechaun. He is hilarious.
I’m reading Goblet of Fire right now!
I'm reading Wild Beauty right now and loving it, but also wondering how clearly I'll be able to speak about it when I'm done!
Feel better soon ❤❤❤🦄🦄🦄
thank you!
...I completely forgot Stars did a show on American Gods 😅 Thanks for the reminder lol
Sam as a mother of three in school, the only thing that keeps us healthy and I mean the ONLY thing is organic raw garlic. Apple cider vinegar, garlic, ginger, raw honey and lemon. It's gross you take it like a shot but I swear by it!
I'm willing to try anything at this point
Thoughts on Tomes we call it the flu bomb and it kills cold/flu virus...this and Doterra on guard essential oil...is LIFE my friend!
Love your nail color in this video
thank you!
Feel better, Sam.
I too, am reading the series for the first time but with my 5 year old son and we're on Goblet of Fire and he's devouring the series. It seems like there's some differences between the US and UK editions, apart from the word differences. Do you invest in the special editions?
If you're eating so healthy then you're probably detoxing or something. Fight through, I'm in a similar situation. I had an infection on my face and I'm covered in bandages. Distressing AF. But ALL SHALL PASS.
I never actually thought that American Gods was actually about American Gods. I have NO idea why, lol. I need to pick up Blue Lily Lily Blue and Wild Beauty! I have Maggie Stiefvater and Anne-Marie McLemore associated for some reason. Both write magical realism and have gorgeous writing style sooo...
"incubus of the bubonic plague" yes. yes.
Put some OnGuard in your diffuser and feel better!
I've been diffusing an Immunity blend constantly!
👍 I swear mine has saved me when everyone else around has been sick. Hope you’re feeling better soon!
I giggled when you said that wild beauty wasn't as flowery. A little ironic don't you think?
I giggled when I was editing
American Gods: I love the book AND the series.
yay!
Hey! American Gods is actually a duology, and the second book, Anansi Boys, is even better!!! It centers around the trickster God of African mythology... Have a nice day! :)
Anansi Boys is more of a companion and less of a sequel from all I've heard about it though :)
[SPOILERS FOR THE STONE SKY]
I've just finished reading it last it and the ending left me feeling so unsatisfied... I was actually frustrated while reading even though it was totally what I predicted. I think it's because I never really liked Nassun. She was just so irritating. And even though I can totally understand her reasons, it still wasn't enough . Might be because I dislike kids in general and have no patience for them haha. I'm also not sure how to feel about Nassun being able to do all the things she did while being a kid with basic Fulcrum training while Essun went through so much to get where she did, but I guess that's a trope that happens quite often.
I got the sense that she could do it because she was Essun's kid (like the little boy was even more powerful.. he was tugging at an Obelisk at like 3?!?) and because Essun trained her just like a Fulcrum would train. But not having full Fulcrum training also allowed her to think outside of the box. I did get frustrated with her a lot but I liked that about her and about the story.
When you're re-reading the Harry Potter books do you plan on reading the illustrated additions with Jim Kay? They are beautiful although I don't know what they're going to do as the books get longer.
I don't because I don't own them and I have these shiny unread editions :)
I have only ever read the Harry Potter series once and I re read The Philosopher's Stone last year. Will you consider doing a readathon?
I feel ya. I’ve been sick off and on since around december 23rd....
it's the worst! I do not understand!
with wild beauty's author i love her writing but her romantic couples (the main ones) usually don't work for me. l want to start The fifth season this year.l also wanted to re read the raven cycle series, and after hearing what you said about the audiobooks i think i will do it listening to them ☺
Traitor's blade was a bit over the top for me in the humor department but still thoroughly enjoyable! I think I gave it 3.5 stars.
yeah it bordered on campy at times but it reminded me of The Lies of Locke Lamora so I went with it
Thoughts on Tomes I still need to read lies of locke lamora. I started it because it came recommended for fans of six of crows but, it was a bit too much for me. I'm not generally adverse to swearing but I couldn't deal with it at the time.
Have you read the Gospel of loki by joanne Harris allready? Everytime I see it on my shelves I think this would be a sam book.
I haven't but that does sound very me
Hey Sam! Is there's a particular reason why you're not doing T5W as of late? Great video! ❤️
just don't have the time to fit it my schedule. if you aren't aware, I'm the moderator and create the topics so I'm still "doing it", I just don't always have time in my filming schedule and January is a busy month for videos.
ah got you. Thanks for answering!
I love your top! Where did you get it!!
American Eagle!
There is a sequal to American Gods, Anansi Boys. Or at least it is whinin the same universe.
So i dnf American Gods, i read the first three books of the raven boys but im not a fan of them, i dont know if im going to finish the series and i didnt liked Station eleven either
lol great
