I took and then TA'd for a Russian Folklore class while in college. Novik did such an amazing job with Uprooted, I hope that more people will explore Russian/Eastern European folklore. Uprooted made me think of a specific theme we talked about how a long time ago, nature was this unstoppable force that people were battling to create civilization. Many big constructions, like bridges or big buildings had animals or people sacrificed to keep nature happy. We read a story about a young woman who gets bricked up inside a wall as the sacrifice to keep the building standing, and the most famous (to Americans) example is London Bridge. I think London Bridge can have a lot of different interpretations, but one is that someone was sacrificed ("locked up") so that the bridge wouldn't fall. And the nature vs. civilization was the most obvious to me, Novik did such a good job all around, and I hope we will see more stories exploring similar folklores.
I've recently come to realize that I love Pride and Prejudice retellings, I don't know how I didn't realize it before since I've already bought several and they're some of my favorite books. My favorite so far would have to be Epic Fail by Claire LaZebnik although Jenni James' are pretty good too
First of all, your hair looks so out of this world, and please dont change it, it really compliments your eyes. And second, i soo badly want to read uprooted and you just made me place it at the top of my tbr.
UPROOTED WAS BEAUTIFUL AND SUCH A GREAT READ!! It gives such a nostalgic feeling for some reason (in a good way?) and also anything with welsh kings and ancient magic (The Dark is Rising Series - SOOOOOOOO GOOD T_T ) also Mist and Fury i heard 'might' be based on the tale of Hades and Persephone ;)
What!?!? A Persuasion re-telling? I haven't heard of this one & Persuasion is my favorite Austen book. For Darkness Shows the Stars is definitely going on my wish list. Thanks for talking about his one.
YES SAM!! You need to read Bone Gap by Laura Ruby! It's a very loose YA retelling of the Hades and Persephone story but it's so unique and beautifully written. Not only is it one of my favourite retellings of all time but it's also one of the best books I've read in 2015. The way the author weaves mythology into a contemporary setting is spectacular. Also, it has magical realism elements which I know you love :) And I absolutely loved Tiger Lily and Uprooted! They are both on my favourites' list for 2015.
love your videos! (and your hair!) I loved Tiger Lilly! Peter Pan is my all time favorite thing ever. There's a good retelling called Tigerheart by Peter David. It follows the Peter Pan story a little more classically but is also an unusual angle from what I remember. I read it a while ago. Tiger Lily is still my fave but that one's my second!
There is a Hades/Persephone retelling trilogy called Seeds by M.M Kin. I read the first volume and really, really enjoyed it. It has background on the other Gods as well which some reviewers seem to complain about, but I just thought that made it even better!
Yaaass retellings! :D Absolutely adore Tiger Lilly! One of my favourites and so so so dark. I was surprised by it's darkness when I read it but strangely enjoyed it. I've pre-ordered the new paperback edition of Uprooted, so I can read that in another 150 days or so. :(
Uprooted is one of my all time favorite books. I loved the main character, I loved her love for her best friend, I loved the surly Dragon. I just loved it
Yes, I got that aesthetic moment the other day and was like, why are all my clothes and hair moments not exactly this, WHY? I will never look that good again. And I would very much read the book of your alternate magical-world thief life. On Persephone stories, I know that Mary & Percy Shelley did a retelling in poetic/dramatic style. Not sure it would have the enjoyment of a modern version (haven't actually read it) but Mary Shelley generally doesn't disappoint.
+books and pieces Why can't we just time capsule these moments and use them daily?! It's so hard to recapture! Haha thank you. I would also like to read a book with a much cooler alternate version of me doing magic-thievery! She probably is being much more productive than real me, who has been marathoning Jessica Jones on Netflix :) I did not know this! I will definitely have to check that out...
I’m a little late to the game, but I just found this video again and wanted to mention my favorite (though you’ve probably read it by now). Kaitlin Bevis wrote a six-book series called “Daughters of Zeus.” They’re modern day and Zeus is appropriately slimy. It’s two connected trilogies, the Persephone Trilogy (with Hades) and the Aphrodite Trilogy (which I enjoyed a little less, because, come on).
I love for darkness shows the stars! I reread it to try and pull myself out of a reading slump last month. Before I knew it I was 100 pages in. Read persuasion for the first time after that. Almost equally as good!
I'm so glad you posted this because I love your opinions and I'm in such a retellings mood. I haven't read any hades/Persephone retelling abut people keep mentioning Abandon and it's one of the few Meg Cabot books I haven't read so I guess I should pick it up. Added the books you meant jones to my tbr list on goodreads. :) hope all is well for you and that whatever your dealing with is getting better.
+Lindsey Ferguson Yes that one keeps coming up in the comments so I'll be adding it to my wishlist as well. Thank you :) I hope it will keep getting better as 2016 goes on.
I read Tiger Lily and did not really care for it. The Lunar Chronicles are one of my favorite fairy tale retelling. Hemlock Veils by Jennie Davenport was really good too. The FairyTale Keep series by Andrea Cefalo. Also I love that wig on you.
Sam! Have you read "Goddess of Spring"? It is a Hades/Persefone retelling by one of my favorite authors ever P. C. Cast. I know lots of people don't like her because of her "House of Night"gigantor series, but this Goddess series is the best! This is book two part of a "the same theme, but no need to read in order because books are stand- alones" series. If you enjoy this one, Goddess of the sea is very good also, and It is an Ondine Myth retelling. Hope you enjoy! Lots of kisses from a south brazilian viewer! =)
You should check out The Goose Girl. It's a beautiful retelling of the Grimm story, though it is intended for a slightly younger YA audience. Still love it.
Meg Cabots Abandon is a retelling of Hades and Persephone. I love Meg Cabot and I loved the first book not the second that much. As for the third much better then the second but still not the first.
There is a book trilogy by Meg Cabot. It's called Abandon and it's a Hades and Persephone retelling, but it's bad. I think, there is even instalove in it. So be careful with it. :)
+Timi A lot of people have been recommending that one but instalove makes me very cautious. Although if I'm going to forgive instalove with anyone it would be with Hades and Persephone...
I also love Persephone and Hades retellings. I have two series that I would recommend. First, the Seeds Volumes by M.M. Kin. There are a total of 3 volumes, I believe the author did a great job with this retelling. I can tell she did a lot of research and I highly recommend these novels. Second, the Daughters of Zeus Trilogy by Kaitlin Bevis. I also really enjoyed this trilogy overall. I thought it had a unique twist on the persephone/hades myth.
I want to read both Tiger Lily and Uprooted so badly! I really should buy them :) Legacy of Kings will be a four book series by the way, with two novella's
It's been a while since I've read it, but Radiant Darkness by Emily Whitman is a Persephone and Hades retelling. I know when I read it I liked it. I ended up giving it four stars.
I plan to read Uprooted sometime this month, it sounds amazing. I hadn't heard about the book Tiger Lilly but I'm for anything Peter Pan related. From the other comments I'm guessing it is really, really dark.
The Abandon trilogy by Meg Cabot is a Hades Persephone retelling. I've only read the first one, and I enjoyed it at the time, but that was a long time ago and I'm not sure how I would feel about it now.
Wildalone by Krassi Zourkova is a fantastic Hades/Persephone retelling that tore me apart. It's the first in a series and only the first book is out, but hopefully the next one will be out soon!
Read Goddess Test, but I didn't continue because I've hear from you and others that it goes downhill. I'm just going to leave it where the first one ended. I don't have any more recs but I will read any Arachne Athena story. I have no idea why it's my favourite, but it is.
Have you ever read The Crystal Cave by Mary Stewart? It's an absolutely stunning retelling of the Arthur myths from Merlin's POV (there's 4 books in the series btw). Also it's most likely you have read it, but The Mists of Avalon by Marion Bradley; another retelling of the Arthur cycle but by the women around him. It's one of the most powerful reads I've ever experienced and I'm just curious as to your thoughts toward it.
Vendetta by Catherine Doyle is a low key hades/persephone retelling. It has some aspects of it, I could say... Make sure to check it out, it's really good, has great romance and lot of action. xx
Hey Sam! Does Legacy Of Kings have a romantic element to it? As for fairytale retellings there's The Lunar Chronicles, which I'm sure you've already read. I haven't yet (don't shoot me lol), The Wrath And The Dawn by Renee Adieh is a retelling of 1001 nights, The Percy Jackson books retell Greek myths, and as you said book 2 of ACOTAR is going to be a Hades and Persephony retelling. I hope it has the same characters as the first one as well though.
+sakurahan91 It does! There are so many different characters, and not all of them have even met yet as of book 1, so there are many different romantic elements going on in each little part of the world. But it's not overwhelming. The story doesn't revolve around it.
My Lord Hades by Stephannie Beman is a fantasy/romance/new adult retelling oh hades x persephone. Not sure if it's accurate but I read it because I like fantasy romance :P

These are not books but I really like these two webcomics: Hades' Holiday by elvishness and MYth [1] : My Seasons by Zelda C. W., you can find both of them on Tapastic
+DinaG I actually just read that one and enjoyed it! I read it after filming this video though otherwise I would have included it. Solid 4 stars for me and I plan to read the rest of them. One of the only one's I've read that got Persephone's personality right.
The Dark Wife by Sarah Diemer! Not only is it a Hades/Persephone retelling, Hades is a woman in the story so it's a lesbian Hades/Persephone retelling!
Have you read a touch of darkness series? I know you are trash for h&s and you already have probably heard about this but i guessed maybe you haven't so definatly check out.
+Oikawa Tooru I didn't mention that one because it is already so popular. I wanted to devote this video to other lesser-known retellings that are my favorites.
First of all I love watching you and I pick up a lot of books you recommend! But I need to redress you: Peter Pan is NOT a Disney charachter - he is created by J.M. Barrie
+Lucia Čolaković lol I know. I didn't say he was created by Disney. I was saying that the character of Peter Pan in Tiger Lily is not the same interpretation of Peter Pan that we see in the Disney version. There's been many versions of Peter Pan retellings over the years, with Disney being only one of them but it is one of the most famous.
Hades and Persephone trash? At last! I've found my people!
WELCOME
Hello fellow H/P Garbage!
Your hair is so freaking amazing. I need to read Uprooted.
+gracewithabookinherface Thank you :) Yes you really do!

I've heard Tiger Lily is such an awesome book. I really want to find a copy!
an enjoyable Persephone retelling is Goddess of the Spring by P C Cast. It isn't YA but I read it when it first came out and really loved it.

I've pre-ordered the new paperback edition of Uprooted, so I can read that in another 150 days or so. :(
I'm not even joking, but you literally are starting to pull me out of a massive reading slump omg. Thanks for that!
+ghostyperson Yay! I'm so glad because I keep falling into slumps myself lol So I'm glad I'm helping someone else out.
haa.. Tiger Lily.. so good!! probably my favourite book
Uprooted is one of my all time favorite books. I loved the main character, I loved her love for her best friend, I loved the surly Dragon. I just loved it
I loved Tiger Lily! I have uprooted on my kindle but I can't decided between Winter and the Bronze Horseman and then read uprooted.
+Melissa Denton Those are two very large books to choose from! I want to get to The Bronze Horseman this winter. Fingers crossed!

I heard the Abandon series by Meg Cabot is a great Hades/Persephone's retelling... I own it but haven't read it yet.
+Jess S I have read it and it is worth picking up.
I love for darkness shows the stars! I reread it to try and pull myself out of a reading slump last month. Before I knew it I was 100 pages in. Read persuasion for the first time after that. Almost equally as good!
+Alysia Roy That's exactly how I was and then suddenly I'd read it in one sitting!
I'm so glad you posted this because I love your opinions and I'm in such a retellings mood. I read Tiger Lily and did not really care for it. The Lunar Chronicles are one of my favorite fairy tale retelling. Hemlock Veils by Jennie Davenport was really good too. The FairyTale Keep series by Andrea Cefalo. Also I love that wig on you.
I need some Hades/Persephone lists too. Someone should make a masterlist.
+wordsandstuff I'm actually going to be working on one once I get the ones on my TBR read!

+Niah Reece Thank you :) Yeah it's definitely sad but I adored it too. I hope you love Uprooted!

+acbsgotbookcitement A lot of people have mentioned that one so I'm adding it to my wishlist!
You look aesthetic af today! It's very interesting to read a retelling frooom a historian?! I sadly couldn't get into uprooted
+Dazzling Books Thank you :) Yeah Legacy of Kings is excellent. I'm sorry you couldn't get into Uprooted but it definitely isn't for everyone.

Hey Sam! Does Legacy Of Kings have a romantic element to it? As for fairytale retellings there's The Lunar Chronicles, which I'm sure you've already read. +Nicole Fila I haven't read a ton of those so I don't have any other recommendations for that one, but I'm always on the lookout!

Persephone's Orchard by Molly Ringle is a Persephone and Hades retelling I think. I haven't read it though and don't know if it's any good.

+Thoughts on Tomes ik it is my life
First of all I love watching you and I pick up a lot of books you recommend!
Seeds Trilogy by M.M. Kin
+Haylee Gatfield Thank you!
I hated the Godess Test. The author had a complete disregard for Greek mythology and my ancient greek student ass couldn't handle it.
I liked it for its ridiculousness, not for its accuracy lol
