Really cool plant! I'm learning a lot from your progression videos - very helpful to see the affects of pruning and root work over time. Instant gratification!
Broski!!! I am dying to get my hands on one of these. Yours looks amazing after only 1.5 hears. Pretty incredible. Nice work to improve the ramification so quickly. 😎🍺🍺
Cheers. From what I can tell (from watching videos of people in Florida) they all seem fairly decent. The question will be what can you get here ? Probably a little office plant like have (from wilko) or the classic IKEA ginseng ones. Apparently the Benjamina that I have, are the biggest trouble makers. Don’t like defoliation and can be fussy. But I’ve had a great time with them.
Lovely trunk movement on that. It's amazing how quickly it has fattened up, even with the small pot and frequent pruning & defoliations. I took some ficus cuttings back in Oct but they're still just tiny shoots in yoggy pots lol. I guess they'll probably take off in spring. I wonder if they'll get similar vigour as yours .. maybe. the mother tree needs cutting back at least twice a year. I even stopped giving it fert to slow it down last year but it still seems to push out new shoots at an alarming rate.
Cheers. I’d say your environment is equal to. If not greater than my tropical wanna be zone. So I’m sure yours will kick off soon. When they get going they are aggressive growers. You can easily cut them back a few times a year.
Get yourself a cheap monitor for a lorry reversing camera, you can connect it to your camera and use it for focus and framing. Really cheap option and will save you spending £100s on a new camera.👍
i wanted a regular ficus plant to bonsai. but all we get here are those "ginseng" type. so i got a cheap one (12 or 15$) then i cut the thumb thick grafted top trunk off and rooted it. the chinese elm and hibiscus will root from thick hard wood cuttings too
Cheers Kate. I believe I did. Probably from about a month after I repotted it until the end of summer. Maybe every two weeks. At half strength to what the packet says . ( box says once a month) if that makes sense.
probably not. but only one way to find out!! usually if its that big it wont be able to suck up enough water to survive as such. but i would try it. its going to die if you just throw it away, so may as well try
Wow that turned out pretty damn good, and relatively quickly. Do you follow Arif Gerrard’s channel? He just did a crazy ficus fusion that fused in only 6 months. I gotta get man hands on one of these things...
@@BackGardenBonsai I have @ home also a "pencil cactus" when you make a cut in the cactus their also comes white fluid and it also toxic ;) Jarhead Bonsai have also a big "Pencil Cactus"
I thought it was funny when you defoliated the tree you wore a rubber glove on your pruning hand but not on the hand you were touching the tree with… lol
Nice work! It's nice to see a tree's progresion over 1 year+ periods of time in a single vid.
Cheers. 👍
Awesome pot and cool tree

@@BackGardenBonsai Patience and virtue should never be used in the same sentence lol 😊

Cheeeers. Yeah it’s done well. They are alright trees to play with 👍
Nice little tree, love the tongue in cheek commentary 😄 which ficus species would you recommend? I know nothingggg

This Ficus benjamina appears to have nice small-ish leaves. Do you know if this is a specific cultivar of Ficus b.?
I've no idea. it was bought from a shop where it wasn't even labeled as a ficus. it just said "foliage mix" on the lablel haah

Cheers. Ah nice work. It’s good that they root so easily. Means you can get rid of that silly ginseng but no problem 👍
Wow mantap
can you tell me what kind of soil mix you use?
its molar clay, perlite and compost
but give this a read too - www.backgardenbonsai.com/a-general-guide-to-bonsai-soil/
Another crackin' video Ian!
Have you fertilised this one at all (on top of the grow light/tropic conditions you've provided)?
Cheers Kate. I believe I did. Probably from about a month after I repotted it until the end of summer. Maybe every two weeks. At half strength to what the packet says . ( box says once a month) if that makes sense.
I have a cutting which is 8cm wide at the base. Can it be successfully rooted?
probably not. but only one way to find out!! usually if its that big it wont be able to suck up enough water to survive as such. but i would try it. its going to die if you just throw it away, so may as well try
If its a ficus cutting yes, ficus can grow from all size cuttings
Good
Cheers :)
I’ve put some branch cuttings in water been in about a week so far and they all have these white spots is that normal ?
yes. it means its working. the white spots will become roots
@@BackGardenBonsai thank u :)

They are decent trees 👍
Did you see when you cut the Ficus white fluid comes out the branches.
Wow that trunk looks great ;)
Cheers. Yeah loads of sap comes out. Apparently it can be toxic to some people.

ah yes, they are cool. His his huge!
I thought it was funny when you defoliated the tree you wore a rubber glove on your pruning hand but not on the hand you were touching the tree with… lol
haha. I had cut the top of my thumb off. So the glove was to keep the bandage cleanin case I forgot about it and touched something dirty
@@BackGardenBonsai I see!! That’s smart I thought it was because of the rubber sap!
