My introduction into Berserk came completely at random. I was 15 (?) and my parents were doing Christmas shopping for me and my siblings. In Best Buy, on a whim, my dad picked up the 1997 Berserk anime box set for like 20 bucks. He said he thought it looked cool and something I would like. Boy, he wasn't wrong.
The 97 anime has such a charm to it. The animation style was perfect for Berserk. Even though it wasn't 100% faithful to the Manga during certain parts it was still great.
97 anime is the best adaptation imo. I wish the same team would have made more seasons. completely agree that the 90s style animation is perfect for berserk. The style of the 2016 anime is just too way clean for berserk.
@M C I'd actually say the 97 was better. By leaving out skull knight and hints of magic it makes the eclipse way more intense. All we have to go on is Zodd.
@4ever EndlessX it was chosen by degenerate idol master enthusiast miura himself. I unironically dont think its that jarring lol even though its obvios that the guy who wrote it sucks at english, the song is essentially about finding meaning and moving forward and the music itself has a hint of melancholy

"All the rape and despair would drive Twitter insane." The man fucking called it, what with all the shenanigans going on there right now with Twatterinos discovering Berserk due to Elden Ring.
I think it’s excessive earlier on in golden age and the beginning. Even Miura himself said he regretted his decision especially earlier on, you see that he really toned down with the last 150 chapters.
@@stickizonline ik I could probably dig myself and find out but any idea why the people who did the movies won't do the show? I liked them so much and with the manga going on hiatus again :( issa gg
It’s crazy you don’t like “Tell me Why” as an intro. I think it fits just as well as the outro. He’s literally begging for a reason to live and keep going and it’s an up beat sad song! Honestly it’s what keeps me coming back to it. Some episodes can be so heavy it’s the chill before a fuck storm
I heard that guitar riff before in other meme videos and I always thought it was some terrible middle-schooler's first attempt at playing the guitar. I always thought the version I was hearing was a terrible parody like the bad flute version of "My Heart Will Go On". I didn't know until this video that was the actual song. It sounds like he's scraping a knife on the guitar strings.
“Tell Me Why” is a great OP. And I would argue it fits with the Golden Age Arc. The lyrics are sad, which fits with the dark themes of the story. And the fact that the song sounds happy makes sense in hindsight because in the grand scheme of things “The Golden Age” Arc was actually _the good times..._ the name is actually apt.
Guts is literally thinking "Tell me why" after every bullshit struggle in his life. After 3 episodes I came to genuinely like the song. I think the ED is even better though.

You mean the anime or the games? That's a big distinction as Konami let the games die ages ago but Igarashi is keeping it alive with his own company. As for the anime, Adi Shankar (Producer) has been trying to get as many video game IPs as he can but we still haven't seen anything outside Castlevania despite him getting the rights to DMC months ago, so take any plans he mentions with a grain of salt. The Castlevania anime itself was written by Warren Ellis over a decade ago as a script for a live action adaptation and spent all that time in development hell until Netflix paid for it to be animated. So even if Shankar's company gets Berserk there is no garantuee it will be as good as Castlevania since Ellis was responsible for that. If Ellis is behind it, well look how long it took for his Castlevania script to go anywhere.
@@zeroattentiongaming820 Even if the script was made by someone else, they pretty much have a script with the manga so as long as they do the animation on par with castlevania I'd be happy with anything

By question, for all the fight scenes in 2016/2017 just have the producers going to a church, get to the bell and just SLAMMING the whole bell - not one corner, not even half of it - just the whole bell to just make the fight scenes
Rest in heavenly peace, Kentaro Miura. Your work is the stuff of literal legend; Berserk is one of the most human and raw stories I’ve ever experienced. I don’t know what this means for Berserk, but it’s pillar, a Titan of what it means to be a mangaka, a man who poured his everything into what he loved for decades has passed. Rest In Peace, Kentaro Miura
Indeed, may he Rest In Peace. I feel awful that I didn’t know he had passed away… but when there were no updates coming, I had no other option but to stop checking on Berserk… I was basically waiting for updates and they never came, I thought perhaps he’d taken a break. Now we will never know if Gutso and Casca would end up together… if crazy Griffith would be defeated… I guess fan fiction is the only way now…

My favorite was the Little Mermaid cover and his random burst of Metallica in the dungeon. First time i saw the 97 adaption, someone had an edit with all the credits left out in between episodes and the outtakes left in. I watched it so many times, things like Guts asking which raider wants to jerk him off is basically canon to me.

I still love the 97 anime to death and it's english dub is top tier and I stand by it as a great adaptation of Berserk because they did the best they could with a limited budget.
@MrDiaboIo I think that English Dub can be just as good or better but to each their own, I'm happy that I can enjoy both. What's truly pathetic is restricting yourself due to misplaced eliteism and thinking all english VAs are crap.
The sex scene has to be the most romantic scene I have ever seen. This is two hardened soldiers showing not only physical volnurability but also mentality. It is a beautiful scene sort of makes you realise just how much they both need each other. Their relationship formed my own opinion on love.
@@jakelee7083 Humans need meaning to things, or else shit gets really dark and hollow. It’s also been proven that those who constantly have sex tend to become depressed and wanting something (that being probably “Love”).
It's arguably one of the most important scenes in the series as it shows them both overcoming their past traumas and growing together as a result of them opening up to one another. They found purpose in their lives in the love they had for each other. It showcases not just their romance for each other, but has them undergo fundamental changes as people. It illustrates what I believe to be Berserk's central theme of love and hope. When you're able to define what you love and allow yourself To love, life has all the purpose you could ever need. Indeed, the thing that keeps Guts going is his love for Casca, the single thing that has ever been able to outmatch his rage, and it is what enables to endure such unimaginable torment. “What is hell? I maintain that it is the suffering of being unable to love.” ― Fyodor Dostoevsky
RIP Kentaro Miura, we’ll miss you and your amazing work. Berserk honestly helped me through some of the most tumultuous times in my life, and for that I’ll always love it. Thank you Miura. We love you.

97 Series was outstanding but cut short. Mark Diraison was perfect as Guts. The movies were decent as well.. but the 16/17 series was an abomination and an insult to all of us fans and humanity as a whole(the opener for season 1 is the only good thing about it). (edit) Just put your grasses on, and you won't have anything wrong.. Just accept it. I unironically love it. Have since 2002 when I first watched it.
Theres a cut on youtube that has a large swathe of the 97 anime moxed with the best parts of the movies and ALL of the stuff cut from the 97 anime (also from the movie) It's long, like, 2-3 movies worth, but it's WELL worth the watch
@Klap Janus eh, I'd agree if the very first episode didnt take place after the eclipse, the 97' anime really should have ended when guts starts losing his shit when he realised Caska literally got fucked stupid.
I actually got into berserk by watching the 2016 anime and being totally clueless and confused while watching it, it was just the fact that the main character felt so cool that made me keep watching. I watched the movies, 1997 anime and read the manga after that and berserk is now my favorite out of all the things I've watched, read etc. in my life and guts is my favorite character of all time...even though my introduction to it wasn't all that good 😂
Man ngl, Gut's and Casca's sex scene in the Manga was the most beautiful thing ever. Like it wasn't some horny coom brain shit. It was the only sex in the entire series that wasn't either horrifying or solely for the sake of lust. It actually brings tears to my eyes each time I read it.
To me it was a more romantic moment between Guts and Casca. Guts had slowly been finding a reason to live and Casca had a big impact on that. It also showed how much trust and care he had built up with Casca after all the abuse he suffered as a child.
Berserk 2016 actually almost made me never get into the series in the first place. It was the first part of the series that I was introduced to. I didn't even know there was other parts to the series until I finished that train wreck. From my point of view I just figured that I would be filled in later about the stuff of Gut's past. I eventually found the 97 anime and fell in love with the series. I finished reading the series quite a while ago and I can agree, this is my favorite THING ever. Not tv, not anime, not video games, favorite thing EVER. I truly wish I could have started it the right way with reading it from Volume 1 and on. I would give anything to wipe this series from my mind so that I could experience this PERFECT series for the first time again. I have watched parts 1-5 on this channel about 4 times all the way through each. Estimating off the top of my head that all of the parts put into one is about 21 hours (rough estimate) I have spent AT LEAST 100 hours watching this series from this channel. Those videos describing and analyzing the series are the reason that I got my best friend to get into this series. He is gonna read it from start to finish once he makes it all the way through part 5. As far as the anime adaptations there is one part I would especially love to see animated correctly and that is Lost Children. It will probably never happen with the way that modern day media would write 1000 articles trying to cancel it. However, it is where you see Guts at his absolute lowest. (SPOILER.......... besides maybe the part where he almost rapes Casca) I would just love to see him go full feral animal. Thank you for coming to my random Ted Talk
Man I wish I was a millionare, i'd write a blank check to some great studio and work closely with them making sure we get every scene right with the proper detail from the manga. Nothing censored.

I think Itsuno and his team at Capcom would actually be perfect. They know action games, the only thing that would probably be an issue is making Guts too OP, and probably not making other characters playable.
@@TheMilhouseExperience The best case scenario for a Berserk game would be a dream collaboration between Itsuno and his team on all things combat + Miyazaki and his team on level & enemy design.
Terminarch Actually I think I'd want an Berserk game to be like aM rated version of Legend of Spyro trilogy. We have an lone hero who's life is put into constant danger, an comic relief fairy side-kick, and an love interest that's about the only thing keeping the hero going. There's a ton of fighting but it's got the quite character involved at times emotional moments that Berserk has to. Just listen to the opening theme of Eternal Night and tell me that doesn't scream Berserk! All we have to do is fix the often janky gameplay, give it consistent style/art and make Puck less irritating than Sprax and we're Golden! (Not to mention that trilogy had Biblical Undertones which Berserk very clearly has.)
My favorite piece of voice acting in the 97 adaptation is when the characters are rescuing Griffith and walking down the staircase, and Griffith’s talking like a lunatic, and his va does it perfectly.
Yea but the problem with berserk is that it’s perfect so there’s no problems to fix while adapting so the creators of the adaptation would try to change stuff unnecessarily leading to something horrible
@@crooked9210 give it to the right team with the right amount of money it would definitely be great prob a bit censored. What would MCU and DC be without live action. Most live action adaptations of anime suck but most were either dealing with smaller budgets or done by Netflix
Damn it's so true the stuff he said about the sex scene. In the Manga it's a moment of passion that brings a guts to a vulnerable place he's never been before and that brings his trauma to the surface, ruining the arousal of the experience and turning it into a deeper moment of bonding between them... Movie Adaptation: "Baby grind on meee~"
Yeah, it’s odd seeing them start going at it when all he did was save her life twice. They skipped over the whole healing scene after the fight in the forest which was a good point for the story
Sure, I can agree the '97 anime lacked a bit of polish, but it is one of my favourite adaptations of Berserk. I miss the Hirasawa soundtrack too, man is a legend. Behelit is one of my favourite tracks. And the OG voice actors gave an amazing, outstanding performance as the characters and I'm so glad they came back!! Mark Diriason and Kevin T. Collins are the pinnacle for me. And I really hope Carrie Keranan and John Avner got more work because they're seriously underrated imo. John Avner is my favourite Void but I love the Japanese VA for Void too.
he's mostly on point though every time he shouts at Guts like when he leaves the group and comes back. not nonsense bullshit mockery we always hear to the other annoying ass characters in the manga/anime
I learned about his passing tonight--literally a few hours ago--after a friend on my partner's discord messaged their chat. I felt so lost, because I read Berserk a few years back, and have cried so hard and will continue to cry for the loss. I feel for his family and loved ones, and it's sitting so heavy with me right now...but he made an amazing series, put his being into and hopefully enjoyed the ride it gave him and us. RIP Miura-Sensei, fly to heaven on the wings of Angels and dance with all of your dead comrades from Berserk, we love you. We can only uplift him to everyone who has yet to discover his work. Berserk is amazing.
Studio 4C did a great job reflecting the Golden Age arc. The parallel frame animation was pretty much close to Kentaro’s original drawings on key panels. They did change the continuity of the manga in the films, yet most of it was pretty spot on. If they were directed by an individual who recited the manga word by word, frame by frame; Studio 4C would do an amazing job adapting the rest of the series. That budget is going to be top tier expensive, I mean 100 million plus.
It's almost fatalistically fitting. The best end to a great legacy, story, question, is whatever our minds put there. The vagueness of what could have been completely sealed Berserk as one of the greatest works of fiction ever written, and drawn. Flip to any page, and that page can be framed and put into a museum, and students will write essays on the philosophical and historical meanings behind what they see. As a philosophy nut Berserk is like heroin. And as lovecraft said, the greatest horror are the ones left up to our own imaginations. I feel the same applies to legacy. Where would Hendrix be now? Kobain? MJ? What we imagine will always be more powerful than what reality would have given us. I feel like the question that every episode of the anime opens to is morbidly accurate to what happened. "In this world, is the destiny of mankind controlled by some transcendental entity or law? Is it like the hand of God hovering above? At least it is true that man has no control, even over his own will." Rest in peace KM
One of the best videos I’ve ever seen breaking down this topic, I remember first seeing 2016 berserk and banging my head against the wall but besides that keep up the fire vids🔥
With Redo of Healer apparently being acceptable to create, along with all the other dark shit that's come about the last few years it's entirely possible for this to get a loyal adaptation.
I can’t believe that after that amazing cliffhanger with the moonlight boy that it would never have closer. Miura was too young, 54 years old, it’s pretty tragic. My condolences to his family.
Rest in Peace, Kentaro Miura. May your work continue to inspire others for generations to come, so that you may always live on in the hearts and minds of those you touched, and those they will inevitably touch.
I made a DND character that I was really proud of, but I thought there wasn't a character that would have this many issues in life. When I started reading Berserk, moreover when I saw Guts, I realised the massive amount of similarities my character has to him. They're both traumatised from childhood, they both need people, they both lose people when they really do decide to open up to others, and they've both become edgelords because of the massve amounts of trauma they've gone through. And to tie it all up, a huge story of self improvement and development. Kentaro Miura has proven that the kind of characters I like can be amazing and loved. Rest in Peace.
@@nak3dxsnakeI still regard that as canon to this day, I mean you can't just throw lore THAT GOOD at me and then take it back because it gave away too much, that's just unfair.
It's kind of sad that the best anime version of Berserk is the one from 1997 and it's not the best adaptation. But I think it's a good opening to introduce fans to the manga. Berserk means a lot to me, it was the first anime that encouraged me to get into manga cause I wanted to know what happened after The Eclipse and ever since then my shelves are now full of wonderful stories with interesting characters. To this day Guts is still my favourite fictional character, just so much depth and complexity. Casca is also another favourite character of mine, I like her arc a lot cause it was about her gaining her femininity back and then the Eclipse happened....yeah... but the love story between Guts and Casca is great, the 1997 anime did a good job but it was better in the manga. Looks like I made the wise choice in not watching Berserk 2016, the trailer alone concerned me enough to avoid it. 47:00 You pretty much distinguished between people who understand Berserk and the people who don't, the story is an uplifting story. I hope some day we get a great anime adaptation, maybe Wit Studio could do it, they proved themselves with Attack on Titan and Vinland Saga, but I'm okay with that never happening and thankfully Kentaro Miura has apparently stated that no western company will adapt his works, so Netflix will never get their grubby hands on it ( Castlevainia, Ghost in the Shell, Saint Seiya and Dragons Dogma suck ) hacks. Demon Slayer is good and Tanjiro is likeable enough for me to tolerate shonen tropes. Have you read the Crow comic? Cause I get the impression the Skull Cowboy was an influence on the Skull Knight.
Whoa whoa, I was with you until you said Netflix Castlevania sucked that one is actually good. Even if you don’t love it you gotta atleast respect that Warren Ellis actually gives af about the source material, which is more than can be said for 99% of video game adaptations of any kind.
@@YetiCoolBrother Warren Ellis....cared about....the source material....are you kidding me!? He admitted he didn't even look up the lore. He butchered the characters and used the show as a vehicle for his disdain towards religion. The animation is complete an utter shite, so chanky and full of filler episodes which reinforced the severe pacing issues throughout the series and the show is merely praised for it's violence. Netflix Castlevainia is a terrible show and ruined Alucard.
When I was recommended Berserk 1997, I knew nothing going in. I was told to start at episode 2 and that in my opinion is the best way to experience the series. The series should have started with the golden age, the eclipse hits so much harder when you’re just as taken off guard as the characters in the story. I don’t think Berserk would have had such a huge impact on me if I had started with episode 1 or if I started with the black swordsman arc in the manga.
"Berserk fans have been shafted hard" So true. The '97 anime was my first exposure to Berserk and I still recommend it to newcomers, but it does have it's flaws like you mentioned. It's absolutely mind-boggling how such a wonderful and inspirational fantasy series can't even get a solid modern anime adaptation or video game. I think you're right about people being too sensitive for someone to really do the manga justice. It's ironic how we live in a society that's so desensitized to sexuality and violence, but foams at the mouth whenever "wrong think" it's in front of them that an accurate Berserk adaptation would cause people to take up arms. I felt like the movie trilogy and musou game were steps in the right direction, but it only illuminates the lack of quality representation this incredible manga gets. Nearly ever panel of the manga could be considered a standalone piece of art.
I came here just to have fun, laughing at some guy's jokes about a crappy CGI anime. Instead, I've got an analysis way more interesting and deep than i expected. Great job!
Nah, my guess its he is just sending the people who die for falconia to hell, he wanted a kingdom, he has it now. How higher can he get, replacing the "idea of god"?
berserk's appeal died with the 90s and early 2000's. Most people have become too sensitive to stuff like this or just watch anime for waifus. Its a real shame....actually seeing how the main stream is being watered down its a good thing.
I first saw this video several months ago and thought very highly of it. I came back to it for background noise while I deal with the news. It's rare for me to comment on things, but I just want you to know that this is the best video on Berserk I've ever seen, and stands out as a breath of fresh air in a genre of UA-cam video that is filled with intolerable pretentiousness and meaningless fluff layered with cheesy appeals to emotions. Your video is straightforward, down to earth, and respects my intelligence by not talking to me like I'm an idiot, and I appreciate that.
literally the only thing the movie did right was have guts use a different sword during the assassination. that tiny detail in the manga always annoyed me bc guts was known for a big sword and everyone saw him.
Incredibly well done, struggler. This did a great service to my fandom and I learned a lot too! I think adapting the manga to the anime hasn't been just fumbled by studios (although a it has a bit). I like to give credit to the dynamic changes in character development and world-building that occurs over the chapters. Trying to do 4 chapters of Berserk manga in a 80-100 minute anime is just foolish. The only way to give Berserk justice is to do 1 chapter per season. No ones been up for that colossal challenge even after 25 years for those reasons... now i wanna cry.
As some one who personally think most anime is cringy and horrible, I absolutely loved the 97 anime adaptation. Despite it not having the best animation quality it was still very watchable and enjoyable.
"Tell me why" is the god hands gift to earth, I don't know what you are talking about, but you seem to have forgotten to put on your grasses But seriously though sounding cheerful, it shows a bit of sadness in its lyrics, which is absolutely perfect. And I truly do not believe, but I know that the ugliness of the vocals (his pronunciation of english, I am sure the man can speak his own language well) improves what would be okay, because it again shows a face (or a voice) of not caring despite the ugly world that we live in. Don't get me wrong it isn't a masterpiece, but it has a message and it delivers it well enough, even if it is by mistake.
This is probably my favorite summary of why someone loves Berserk, I completely agree with everything you said in this vid. Except tell me why, im genuinely not being ironic when I say I love it, its such a wonderful contrast from all the grime and I love that intro.

Didn’t the creator of Castlevania said he wanted and is trying to negotiate a deal to make a proper and loyal adaptation of Berserk?
Yup
Humans need meaning to things, or else shit gets really dark and hollow.

That sex scene is the only scene that makes Guts so weak. The reason he can't moved on. Miura intentionally did that.

The line "Berserk fans have it rough" aged very well considering what happened with Miura.
At least it is true that man has no control, even over his own will."

Its interpretation of evil was so good that they had to retcon it because it gave away too much and so it could be the official ending.
@@nak3dxsnake what do you mean? Are you talking about Berserk ending or LOTR?
@@nak3dxsnakeI still regard that as canon to this day, I mean you can't just throw lore THAT GOOD at me and then take it back because it gave away too much, that's just unfair.
@@bfs9043
Berserk had a fittingly eldritch representation of evil in a being that was retconned.
I think there will be one masterpiece of an anime to come out in the next 20 years
I’mma make one
yes, and they will probably try to fan-fic a ending game of thrones style, which is better than not having it at all
Tell me why is a masterpice unironically
it's so ironically bad, it's become so unironically good
"once again we are denied monke" is too perfect a line to just let pass without mention
The voice actors and music in the 1997 is amazing tbh
Bruh, I'm so fucking broken right now. Love you Miura and how you can rest and play plenty of idolmaster.
THE BERSERK 97 OPENING IS FIRE MAN. IDC I UNIRONICALLY BE SINGING THIS SHIT AT TIMES
"Berserk fans have been shafted hard"
So true.
Great job!
Also fun fact Adon in Golden Age arc is voiced by Mike Pollock, whom you may know as Dr Eggman from the Sonic franchise
"My love for you.... Is like a truck."
"Berserker"
I said that aloud to myself like 20 times while watching this im so glad you put it at the end
Ahaha
Fantasia arc makes me feel like Miura is planning something horrible.
Edit: 😭 I'm so sorry
Nah, my guess its he is just sending the people who die for falconia to hell, he wanted a kingdom, he has it now. How higher can he get, replacing the "idea of god"?
@@matiaslarenas5901 yes, that's exactly what's left for him to do.
@@matiaslarenas5901 As of now he wants to expand his empire even further into the demon conquered lands
Too soon...

97 is the best adaptation, hope they do the full series in that style.
Honestly I like that the anime left out Wyald, it makes the events of the eclipse that much more shocking and unexpected
It gives more emphasis to Zodd's appearance too
Bro you are right I was like wtf is goong on, currentlly re reading manga and read wyald passage which is crazy
@@abdelclous6821 I really dislike the wyald section. Too much rape and it desensitizes the reader to the eclipse
@@Nightmare43262 yep i started with the 1997 version so the eclipse was a shock
Yes I agree
berserk's appeal died with the 90s and early 2000's. Most people have become too sensitive to stuff like this or just watch anime for waifus. Its a real shame....actually seeing how the main stream is being watered down its a good thing.
ironically the creator stopped making berserk due to waifus
@@leimahn Dont get me wrong I indulge in some waifus from time to time. But this time its personal Idol master...
I thought with the rise of game of thrones it would help berserk be a little more mainstream but I sadly did not
nah bro i crave violence
@@pepperet5216 yea you and I do but the normies dont
excellent video man. thanks for sending this to me. this series is also by far my favorite franchise of anything ever.

I expected nothing less.
The only problem with the '97 anime is that there's not enough of it.
The only problem is that theres not puck and skull knight
I love Tell Me Why unironically. It's a masterpiece
A soon as I heard him say "guts killed cthulu" I literally started to agree that guts is indeed one of the most overpowered humans ever.
the 1997 anime has its moments, like really great moments, but I only realised how OK it was after reading the manga.. It got the flavour right though
Yeah, I thought Golden Arc movies were insane when I first saw them. Then I read the manga and realized how tame it all is, compared.
If Berserk gets the right studio to animate it with fluid animation etc, the clang must prevail and remain, the clang is eternal.
literally the only thing the movie did right was have guts use a different sword during the assassination. that tiny detail in the manga always annoyed me bc guts was known for a big sword and everyone saw him.
Same.
Like I said, if they hate the 90's anime?? They can go watch that stupid 2016 CGI anime if they hate it so much.
@Hitroman I'm not gonna defend thay cause I dont rlly care, but hit me with your list of favourites buddy?
For a second I thought you were going to trash the OG soundtrack. I’m glad you didn’t because that was a great video. 👍
I sincerely love Tell Me Why, I listen to it when i walk to school, do homework, and go to the gym, overall 10/10.
Cries in DEMONetised.
R.I.P Kentaro you will be missed greatly 😢
Does kentaro look like filhy frank?
"Tell me why" is the god hands gift to earth, I don't know what you are talking about, but you seem to have forgotten to put on your grasses
But seriously though sounding cheerful, it shows a bit of sadness in its lyrics, which is absolutely perfect.
Except tell me why, im genuinely not being ironic when I say I love it, its such a wonderful contrast from all the grime and I love that intro.
i have that on my music playlist. i love how it subverts your expectations of what berserk is all about when first watching it.
Yeah like Evangelion Op
