I disliked this discussion. I found that it omitted some key historic facts about NATO, US hegemony, and the Russia baiting that has gone on for generations. "Since 1945 it's been acceptable to invade your neighbor", is an unacceptable statement. There have been many neighbors invaded since 1945: Palestine, Iraq, Afghanistan, Grenada, Panama, Yemen, Lebanon, and right now Syria is being bombed, all by "good guys" and their friends. These people have an agenda that blinds them to a full appreciation of the situation, and it is this kind of blindness which has put the Ukrainian people in the crosshairs of conflict between superpowers.
By the way, there are a few nations calling themselves democracies who are in the final days of losing their democracies or have abandoned democracy in all but name.

Putin, in his expectation that his invading army would be met with flowers “forgot” about the 1932 - 1933 Holodomor (death by starvation) in which MILLIONS of Ukrainians starved to death because Stalin forced them to turn over their land and their crops to Russia. I can’t begin to imagine the degree of rage Ukrainians today must be feeling as this modern day “Holodomor” is being imposed on them again with Putin’s special mix of violence and starvation. It’s a deep and justified rage, going back generations. It provides a powerful psychological fuel to fight and endure the horrible atrocity of Putin’s “special military operation”.

A part of the Holomodor that is not remembered is that as soon as the US recognized the USSR in 1932, the US plopped economic sanctions on them which, int he context of an already existing famine, produced food insecurity across the entire USSR. This is not to excuse Stalin's mistreatment of recalcitrant peasants in Ukraine, but for everyone to hopefully understand better the famine and the sanctions that produced the basis for a food emergency.
I was hoping to hear a serious analysis of the causes behind Putin's invasion of Ukraine, but was very disappointed. One of the very few with a razor sharp analysis in my opinion is American political scientist professor John J. Mearsheimer. It is worth while listening to him here on UA-cam.
Mearsheimer? The guy who thinks that Ukrainians who speak Russian as their mother tongue must be Russian rather than Ukrainians? This war has already demonstrated how wrong he was. Those people meet Russian tanks holding Ukrainian flags and tell Russian soldiers to go home. That is, if they are civilians not fit for fighting. There are many who are fighting not with words but with guns. There is a lot of much, much better info on the history leading to this war, including the books written by the people speaking here. Russia is not going away no matter how hard they're sanctioned. Ukraine and Russia are going to have to learn to live as neighbours because nobody chooses their plot of land. These are the choices forced upon Ukraine, unfortunately. Noone, not even Putin, can make Ukraine disappear, but they need to have something left to hold onto, and NATO membership does not feed you and keep you warm. This dispute, WAR, must be resolved by both parties compromising.

Every issue in this discussion is irrelevant! The only reason NATO moved closer to Russian borders was to place thousands of land-based nuclear-armed cruise missiles closer -- as in 10 minutes or less -- to hundreds of targets so that a preemptive and decapitating attack with civilization destroying nuclear weapons would be possible! There's a war happening in Ukraine, and I find this very unfortunate. Firstly, because of the victims. Secondly, because of the death of the truth. I want this war to end.
Harari says this war is all about the existence of Ukraine, but he couldn't be more wrong. As a historian he shows a shameful lack of understanding of the profound reasons of the conflict. Every militar conflict has both an immediate and a profound reason. He's right about that this is about the existence of Ukraine, but that is only the tip of the iceberg. This is an extension of the Cold War. For Russia, this means a blow to put an end to the three decades of humiliantion after the collapse of the Soviet Union, and to the unexplained expansion of NATO, which was now threatening to include Ukraine. For what reason?? In this point of view, Russia only acted defensively, and this is not my condoning of their military invasion. The immedate reason of the war, in the eyes of Russia, is the growing neo-nazi militias in Ukraine, who have been bombing and killing Russian populations in Ukraine (namely 14 thousand since 2014).
For the USA this is a war in defense of the dollar as a world dominant currency. The dollar is fundamentally backed in the US military supremacy (not only simply backed in everyone's belief and imagination as Harari would say). Which one government has the power to dictate which other countries may or may not make financial transactions between themselves using the world money? That's the USA, the guardians of the dollar. Now they just can't stand the rise of a powerhouse (namely China) which has made a revolution and has had the most stable growth rates in all of human history, all of that while contradicting everything that the USA has preached and taught. China has found their own way. Just compare China (those rebels dictatorial monsters who don't know how to manage things right) with Brazil (the beloved unmilitarized tropical democracy who, ops, has been struggling with poverty literally forever and is now insignificant in the world stage in every aspect) - Brazil, that is the good boy in the eyes of the USA... Brazil is their bitch. And nobody out there ever talks about the chronic genocide of the black communities in the favelas of Brazil, do they? No. More people die here from violence than in all the wars of the world combined. Oh, but they sure talk bs about a genocide in Xinjian that doesn't fucking exist but in their imagination and in western propaganda of falsehood. Because China's prosperity is a nuisance. More than anything else, China's prosperity is a statement against the American way, who has made hardly anything to promote freedom and prosperity in other countries, but only created debt traps, military invasions, sabotage and coups d'etat. Ukraine is key to China's belt and road initiative, whose main goal is to connect China to their largest business partners, Europe. Now bogged down in a war which every day increasingly seems will last long - the perfect sabotage to the China-Europe partnership, just never forget about that. And the US hardly has anything to lose, since, fuck them, this war is not happening in American territory or nowhere near it, is it?
Not only will Europe triple down in their military spendings for ever from this day on, but also will the rest of the world, who has seen not only how despicable the American interests are and how far they'll go in defense of the dollar empire, but also how effective Russia's dissuasive power is because they also have nukes. What's more, the public outcry for the situation of the Ukrainians (both the ones trapped in a coutry in war and the refugees) is fair and right, but also it shows the blatant racism in that this level of sympathy and humanization has never been shown towards civilians in the Palestine, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iraq, Syria, Lybia, Yemen and many others. The peoples dying in those cases barely touched our hearts, we've never considered boycotting the USA (where are the weapons of mass destruction in Iraq huh?) and the only occasion these peoples moved hearts is when they starting to seek refuge into the developed world, who then saw these people "flockin in" and doing terrible terrible things such as taking their jobs or practicing their strange religion on western Christian ground.
My sentiments to the people in Ukraine. I really mean it, from the deep of my heart! But this war has shown how atrocious and racist western media, public opinion and governments are (towards non-Ukraininan peoples suffering from war cause by the US empire). For one, there was no humiliation of Russia by the West, - this is just a rhetoric used by the russian propaganda machine. For two, although there are hardened nationalists in Ukraine, they have never been in power, and they have never had any significance on the political scene.
For three, all the death and destruction since 2014 in Donbas is the direct result of Putin's intervention and de-facto occupation of those lands. It's completely ridiculous to blame Ukrainians for that, sorta like blaming a rape victim for injuries they gave to a rapist. It's more complicated than that, but the analogy holds.

About the complexity of the facts, this is an extremely delicate terrain. The only thing I take for granted is that all sides is at all out war in rhetoric, narrative and propaganda (this goes for Russia, Ukraine, the USA, NATO and the EU). Thus, I take everything they say with a grain of salt and grant my belief for nothing, except when I find convergence in opposing sides and self-contradictions or concessions. It's hard to believe even witnesses. Somebody's attacking? That could always be false flag to gain back in public opinion. It's a fucking war! Any lies are most welcome when they fit.
Professor Harari seems to disregard of that totally, or offer a blind eye to the crimes and propaganda of the West.

You are viewing this whole thing at a way too high level, and I understand how that may make you think that everybody is lying an equal amount. I would encourage you to look closer, to take what you consider propagandistic claim from each side, look at the evidence and decide how actually convincing it is. Because from what I understand (also from his work), is that democracy, pacifism, dialogue and exploring all options before war, has proven to be the most safe and honest system for humankind. Just because he uses science / objective measurable truth, doesn’t mean he shouldn’t be completely neutral about the fact that one man is in charge of killing hundreds, maybe thousands of innocent people. Only to justify it with a fantasy believe that there is no Ukraine, and that the Ukrainians have to be freed by the ‘nazi’ government that supposedly uses ‘genocide’. There are scholars who have thorough understanding of the conflict. Yuval is either not one of them or he prefers not to be one, as the topic is too emotional for him, which I understand.

Thank you for this insight conversation. Here in Poland we admire Ukrainians and at the same time have a great sense of gratitude. We know they fight for us as well. We also see thousands of refugees and we feel their pain as our own.
You can not generalize. A lot of polish people have great resentment about the murderous deeds of Ukrainians during and after WW2. And the fact that already a couple of polish people have been murdered by some ukrainian immigrants who just received all kinds of benefits over and above those given to the poor born in poland, does not help relieving the tension.

Because to have done otherwise, just sets them up for what is now happening. What's missing in his Great Powers approach, is the aspirations of the less powerful nation themself. His logic is flawed in my view. Listen to the recent UA-cam discussion between him & several other foreign policy experts. At 58 minutes in, all the things missing from Mearsheimer get an airing.

Yuval describes Ukrainian situation incorrectly. Ukraine has Western Ukraine - which was basically free all its history except probably in 1945-91 - this makes a great difference between Ukraine and Russia, which was for centuries a slave state in its entirety.
Please, reread Ukrainian history. Western Ukraine wasn't free most of the existence time.

Why the hell don't these news programs have interpreters for the Ukrainian interviewees struggling to respond to complicated questions by speaking English to these inconsiderate interviewing sots? How many languages do most of the interviewers speak, I wonder?
And don't forget, from the late 1700's through the early 1900's, Ukraine was settled with German farmers who built solid homes and churches, and created the breadbasket that Ukraine is noted for. Those Germans were later scattered all over the Soviet Union by Stalin.

I enjoyed this discussion so far as it went. I suppose there wasn't time to discuss corrupted democracies. Neither was there time to discuss other occupied countries such as Palestine, which has been occupied by Israel for 74 years. What a difference would have been made all those years ago if the west had rallied in response to Israel's illegal occupation as it did to Russia's invasion. And is there still a way to reconcile the value claim to justice with the tribal claim to fidelity, without having to choose between the two, and without the desire to do justice being considered in our places a betrayal?"
If Harari is right, then Israel is heading for a "solution of the three classes". The rest of the world will - many already do - call it apartheid, a serious crime under international law. The big question then will be, what is the world going to do about it? If experience to date is anything to go by, the answer will be, "Nothing whatsoever."

I have a slight suspicion that the reason why Ukraine and Taiwan choose differently is due to having this giant autocratic state beside to build the autonomy from.
Identity of any subject is driven by struggle, not peace. So, unfortunate that it may seem, democratic countries will always have a part of their values narrative revolving around separating from big and small totalitarian regimes. There’s a shadow benefit of having them around. The loyalty to their values will be derived from basic civilization conflict of multiculturalism, religion and regime being a part of it.
So Imao, Putin indeed carries a heavy load of being everybody’s enemy figure, responsible as well for the passionate revival of western values of freedom. Doing all the dirty work in a sense, as these values can only be reinforced once in a while through dark and bloody wars with THE OTHER. Sad to say, I don’t think it’s the last big war of narratives, values and myths on Earth.
Please, do not tell us to fight and go to war, it is easy for those who are far away but European existence is also at stake. We cannot help the Ukranians with sacrificing the whole Europe. Peace is the only good option for everybody.

Please don't dodge my very sincere question by reminding me that Zelenskyy is Jewish either. I need to know how the openly neo-Naz¡ "Azov Batallion" is allowed to wear naz¡ symbology on their military issued uniforms, and why former President Poroshenko was involved with them in ANY way?
I also want to know why African and Indian Ukranian refugees are being mistreated by UKRANIAN military and being forced off fleeing trains, and/or held at gunpoint?
These are very serious questions that need addressing, even tho it doesn't change the fact that Ukranians, racists and not, do not deserve to be invaded. How deep is this problem in Ukraine?
I ask because nobody is addressing it and it really looks to some people that maybe if Putin isn't lying about "de-Naz¡fication" to some degree, what else is the Western media getting wrong, or simply lying about?
We are having a serious crisis of trust in the West and you trusted voices had better begin to speak honestly about these issues or you truly risk people losing trust in many more important Western institutions: healthcare, msmedia, military, the academy, research, law... the list goes on.

Actually, Ukraine was one among the first true Democracies. It is not a “new” desire for formation of government or community. And, has a very different history in terms of its being overtaken, stolen, & owned by other countries due to its wealth of natural resources, and its strong people wishing to continue with self-determination and collaborative community. I disagree that it is and has been a “normal” European country - history tells a different story.
One of the first democracies? Maybe that's why Ukraine is one of the most corrupt countries in existence. Even worse than the US. Another failed democracy. Like they all are.
