As a general contractor, I am competitive because I continue to learn and follow the trades experts and continue to study codes. I don’t get stumped because of experience and knowledge. When I am down to the wire and am neck to neck with another contractor to get the job, and the price is similar, I simply express my desire to work with the customer and ask what would have to happen for us to get aligned? I never close. I allow the trust and the rapport we established to gently settle and usually I get the job.

I don't think there's a straight across the board answer for everyone. I highly doubt that someone that's good wouldn't have seen the frustration and adjusted before they lost him though. If you think Andy is like that you haven't been paying attention. He teaches sell from the heart. I don't think he would have continued bulldozing forward if he seen frustration

The first one is a fail. The contractor from the get go in beginning of his call should have asked if there are any other decision makers in the home, you set the stage for when you go over your estimate you want both people present. Or you schedule a time for it.

We both work hard and it’s about time we treated ourselves with this. Plus it’s going to increase the value of the house, so rather than do it right before we sell, now we’ll be able to enjoy the remodel BEFORE we sell the house”.
It don’t matter how good you are if someone can’t afford it they aren’t buying it. You can’t just talk someone into an 800 dollar purchase when they only got 4.75 in their bank account. I wanna see you close a real estate deal with a homeless person.
