      If you bring supplies to do laundry, you can travel infinitely with 2 or 3 days’ worth of clothing. Sink laundry is the cheapest and fastest. It takes up very little space in your bag to pack laundry detergent strips, a mini clothesline, a dry bag or sink stopper, and a pair of latex gloves (for delicate hands). To save time, if your shirts are only a little soiled in the armpits, just wash those parts of the shirt. Of course, you have to be okay with wearing the same things repeatedly. It gets harder if you’re going to be doing multiple activities with differing clothing needs while you’re away.

      @@WNCHSTR this was on a month-long trip through ~10 cities in Europe, which ended with 3 days in Tromsø in early December. The bag was some generic compression-style bag from Amazon, and it was massive, but I would NOT pack like that today. I think I took 4 full outfits and washed along the way, but if I were to do it again I would only take half the clothing and wash more frequently. Laundry sheets and a Scrubba wash bag take up way less space than a third pair of jeans.

    Went to Europe with some friends for a month in '99. We all bought those giant camping backpacks. Maybe 70 liters. What a pain in the ass! A hotel clerk in Holland laughed at us, "you Americans act like we don't have laundry or sell clothes here."
    Never traveled with more than a carry on since.

    Great video with very useful tips! I've been doing one bag travel for decades now (though I'm not a frequent traveler). I use bags with 21l-34l in volume. Just like you, I prefer a sling over a packable backpack for the same reason. Also, I pack only around 80-90%% full. Always leave some extra space. You pack to the brim, but then it is sometimes difficult to repack again, because you didn't fold your clothes perfectly again, or you bought some extra stuff during the trip. One downside is when you want to bring a tripod. It is not allowed in the cabin.

    I'm down to a 40L and personal item for most travel (including 2 cruises). I still have a checked bag for my euro-festie trips as I am bringing camping gear still. But this year i went from a large backpack to a rolling bag. I figured at 63 I deserved a break from tramping around with 35 pounds on my back.

      @@Crying-Croc I'm a basic gal, not too fancy, but I still schlep a good tent, sleeping pad, chair, and my trusty jet-boil. This past summer I did leave my sleeping bag at home and brought a puffy poncho that doubles as a duvet instead. I go to two festivals in August and camp out at both of them. Sometimes the weather is lovely, but this year it was damp and rainy for most of that 2 weeks. I was thankful for my Big Agnes tent that kept me dry and my thick air mattress that kept me warm well above the cold, damp ground. I've tweaked a few things for next year to lighten the load, but I've found what works for my vacation to keep me comfortable.

      What personal item bag do you use? I’m concerned moving from a suitcase and 25L rucksack as my personal item, to just a backpack and sling will leave me too short on space for my needs

    • @peggywoods4327
      @peggywoods4327 6 місяців тому

      @@ohooper depends on the trip. The last one I went on was a cruise (4 nights). So I used a Matein backpack and a 16"x16" tote bag as my personal item. In that I pack a Travelon pouch with the items I use during the flight. I pull out that pouch and stuff the tote under the seat for flying. I'm upgrading for next year with the Osprey Fairview 40L (I wanted a waist belt) and an Osprey 15l daypack to use as the personal item and that can attach to the larger one. One of the tricks is to reduce your toiletries (go solid!) and minimize your clothing (soap sheets & sink washing)

    I always take my osprey 65l transporter as carry on (with a bellroy sling and a foldable backpack) but stick to the 7kg or 10kg then have loads of room to take advantage of once at destination like the bulkier stuff you were wearing on the plane, food and water, extra things you may buy but will dispose once your trip has finished etc. Because this bag can be easily squished down into any carry on dimension if they ask as it mostly depends on weight. Yes, you'll say oh but there isnt much organization in that bag but isn't that the point in packing cubes, tech pouches (my sling), laptop sleeves and toiletry bags?! 😁

    I am trying to migrate to one bag travel for simplicity’s sake. I haven’t checked anything in years, but I always end up shipping home unneeded items or making other arrangements to get those items home that don’t fit in carry on. My carry on has been insanely heavy, stuffed to the gills, and just a stressful experience all around (not to mention all the STUFF I’ve had to sort through during the trip- most of it unused). Looking forward to easier travels next time with less.

    International travel with one, fairly heavy bag is okay. They measure the size and the weight limit is generous. I like having a pocket knife / multitool so two bag travel is easier. On internal flights when they do weigh your bag and it has to go cargo with a carry on limit of 7kg or perhaps 5kg. Getting the tech gear, clothes and a jacket down to under 7kg is difficult. Laptop, DSLR with a couple of extra lenses, a battery back up charge and you have hit 5kg if not exceeded 7kg. Nights in otherwise warm countries can get very cold you need a warmer jacket but don't need it on the journey and that is when you need 40 litres.
    How big can a sling or brief case get not to be considered as a second bag and one then has to go cargo?

      I've watched a few plus-size travel content creators and they use the same basic principles for one bagging. Your one bag can be as large or small as you care for it to be (and can carry). Torso and hip measurements are important to know in evaluating how comfortable a bag with be.
      Since clothing is larger, they either get a larger backpack or they take less clothing/use a versatile, but limited, capsule wardrobe. I've seen plus-size creators even travel with just a personal bag. Common thread is that they tend to use duffle bags (like lo and sons, or nomad bento) because it maximizes space, while staying within the airline restricted measurements.

    • @andreslucero81

      I've done a bit of looking into these, general consensus in the onebag community seems to be that most rolling backpacks are kinda "worst of all worlds" where the bag isn't very good at being a travel backpack or a rolling suitcase, and the compromises aren't worth it compared to getting a travel backpack with a better harness system (Osprey makes some of the best).
      The one rolling bag I've found that seems like it could be pretty decent is the eBags "Mother Lode Rolling Travel Backpack", I don't own one myself but reviews generally seem to be pretty positive and it doesn't have a lot of design compromises compared to other roller backpacks. It's actually on sale right now for 60% off so might be a good time to look into one!
