Finally a s20/ultra in the hands of someone who knows how to utilize it to its full potential. So funny how almost all the other reviewers compare smartphone cameras only based on the jpeg point and shoot images they take. Go into pro mode and really test the lenses/camera before writing/making a review.

Wow, I can't believe I forgot the metering modes! MY bad you guys...here's a quick explanation:
Center weighted: This is where the camera only meters the light from the center and immediate surrounding area of the image. Better for back-lit subjects like portraits with the sun behind them.
Matrix metering: This is the most common and usually default. It's where the camera meters off the light from the entire image.
Spot metering: This is where the camera only evaluates a small spot of light, wherever you select it, and ignores the rest of the image. this is good for really small subjects in very back-lit conditions.
Also, let me know if you want an actual video on just metering modes and if I get enough interest I'll make one.

I come from a Huawei P9 plus that gave me a great deal of satisfaction but I just moved on to a Galaxy Note 20. Thank you, thank you, thank you...exactly what I was looking for in a tutorial for the Note camera. There are times when you need to take a quick shot, but there are many times when I want a posed, carefully constructed photo and the pro mode allows me to do it. Of course, a mirrorless Sony does so much more, but when you're taking a walk with your dog and you by chance come upon something worth snapping, the mirrorless isn't practical for me or just impossible to always have around. The Galaxy is my substitute for those times when I don't have a mirrorless with me. Again, thank you.

Stumbled across you looking for tutorials for cannon I recently purchased. Thank you Brent for the instructions on use of Samsung as what I always thought was possible with my camera app you have shown me how to achieve my goals. I have the S10 which has all the same features but perhaps not as broad as the S20. I do a lot of hiking etc and I really don't want to add to my gear. Going to return the cannon eos I just purchased because I hadn't been able to find info previously as to how to take the star trails and silky water shots you describe here.

Awesome tutorial. I just purchased a Galaxy S20 FE 5G since my Galaxy J7 V was going a bit wonky. Your vid helped me a lot by filtering the tinkering time out. I majored in photography late 70s in college. Eventually had my own studio and dark room. Burning and dodging and contrast filters. Developed medium format color too. Once digital started coming out we all laughed. Pixel quality was horrible. So we believed digital would go the way of buggy whips. Now I have some $1700 in photography equipment in storage. If the 3 eyed monster camera only uses 1 eye, what are the other 2 for? Looks I guess.

i want to ask a things
1.Can the shutter be held open past 30 seconds manually?
2.That would require a remote trigger so i dont touch camera. So are there remote triggers(ie bluetooth) that i can fire shutter with?
3.Is there a built in ND filter or 2 in the S20(Ultra).The ones you link to appear regular full sized filters?
4.U can only use pro mode with main lens-a 26 mm equivalent(Can this be changed if Samsung decides to do it in an update? Or is it hardware limited?)

No, the shutter can't be held open longer than 30 seconds. I don't know if there's a 3rd party app that would let you do that, but I haven't seen any. There is no built in ND filter. I do use other (sometimes dslr) filters. Lately I've been using the moment 37mm filters as they fit the moment case and can be used without any moment lenses or adapters. I made a whole video on moment filters, sizes, and adapters.
You are correct about the pro mode, you can only use the main sensor/lens in pro mode (which is why I still have moment lenses) I have done quite a few videos on this. It's not a hardware limit, Samsung could easily fix in a firmware update, though they likely never will.

Darn on no software filter. That would be very easy to do would it not?
Maybe Samsung would listen to a petition to change that pro mode limitation?

    Questions:
When entering "Pro" mode, I see only "W" and "UW" lenses options.
So no "Pro" mode for the primary or telefoto lense?
Also, what is a good cradle to use on tripod for the S20 + with cover on it?
Lastly, what is that filter you were pointing at that made the whole scene brighter? Was that for the S20+ or the camera you were recording with?
    Thanks again

everything I use is linked in the description. The filters I use for the phone are the moment filters. I have both the 62mm ones that go over their lenses, and the 37mm ones that just go over the phone lenses. I don't use a screen protector though.

@@BrentHall Thanks very much and I'm from England and just brought my Ultra and impressed. You're videos are excellent and I was thinking of buying the domeglass screen protector but its pricey but seeing as the screen is gorilla glass 6 I would say its hard to scratch with general use. I shoot with the Nikon D7000 (Manual Mode ONLY!) on the regular.
Oddly enough, if it hadn't been for my Galaxy S9, my desire to recreate a nighttime long exposure traffic shot I saw on a computer screensaver back in May 2019, I'd have NEVER learned the fundamentals of photography and shooting in Manual Mode!
    I can't believe the S20 is 30" Shutter Speed-capable!
Even with the 10" shutter speed, I can grab KILLER Night Long Exposure shots!

Great video Brent. May I ask how do you manege to operate the dual function camera whilst taking videos such as this video (selfie and main camera operating simultaneously in video). Im asking as I have an app called "smart dual camera" but that only does stills on the phone, not video's. I don't know why Samsung removed this native option on Samsung phones. The last time Samsung had this as an option within the phones software was on the S8 however when they had an firmware update on the S8 they removed dual option and never issued it on Samsung phones ever since. How are you utilising this option please for videos ?

    • @BrentHall
      @BrentHall  4 роки тому

Thanks man! That wasn't a dual camera recording on my phone, that was me screen capturing the phone while also filming myself with my mirrorless camera, then editing it with the mirrorless footage in the frame like that.
