While I don't always agree with them, you can't argue with the production quality, relatively thorough but concise reviews and good balance of information with a touch of humor.
I completely agree. I think there are some good alternatives out there but Game Sack is definitely my go-to. The presentation and production value are definitely top-notch.
Man Phantasy Star really was ahead of its time. Those graphics are pretty mindblowing for that era, the smooth turning in the dungeons looks better there than it does in Shining in the Darkness on the Genesis.
So much love for Phantasy Star. That was my first RPG and the music still manages to send chills down my spine. Like you guys said, way ahead of its time.
Oh! I got some ideas: Mario 64 vs Sonic Adventure, Best First 3D Platformer in The Series. Klonoa Door To Phantomile Vs Pandemonium, Best 2.5d Platformer. Unreal Tournament 99 Vs Quake 3 Arena, Best Arena Shooter. Jazz Jackrabbit vs Zool, Best Early Computer Platformer. Paper Mario Vs Valkyrie Profile, Best Reactive Combat System in a JRPG. Hopefully most of these aren't out of your reach. I know how expensive Klonoa Door To Phantomile and Valkyrie Profile are.
I would love to see a hack of Hyperstone Heist putting in the screen-throw effect. I'm sure the genesis can handle that. While at it, that black bar behind the status info is not necessary either, but rather a sign the developers were in a rush. A similar black bar was in early screen shots of SF2: Special Champion Edition, but gone in the actual release.
I was just about to go to bed and then I noticed that you guys posted a new video. It looks like I'll be staying up just a little bit longer. Thanks Game Sack.
Have you guys ever considered covering the Game Boy Advance? I know you have briefly in the handheld episode and mentioned a few of the games throughout various episodes, however I think it would make for an interesting episode. Dave obviously would enjoy the first party Nintendo releases along with the revisions of classic third party games, and Joe would be interested in the offerings from Sega and Treasure.
GAME BATTLE: such a simple concept, but has never been done in this way. I love this formula!!! Also, I'd love to see you guys do a game battle where you compare games between console generations (think Super Metroid vs. Symphony of the Night, Shining Force 3 vs. Vandal Hearts, Adventure Island 3 vs. Congo's Caper, etc.)
I LOVE these types of episodes. Please keep them coming! Wish you guys were coming to Too Many Games! A few suggestions for the future: Capcom vs. SNK 2 v. SNK v Capcom Shining in the Darkness (Genesis) vs. Arcana (SNES) Final Fight 3 (SNES) vs. Streets of Rage 2 (Genesis)
I'm I'm drunk as duck, eating great value crisp rice in my kitchen at 2:25 in the morning Ann game sack just put up a new video... I feel completely complete now... :))
Ahahahahaha, six towns, that's too adorable. :D The bit at the end was great, too. I think the show's name should be modified to "Game Sack: Hosted by The Game Dads"
Guerilla war is that one game I keep forgetting the name of, but I never forget the game itself. I've played that game so much when I was little at a friend's house.
today is my birthday (32) and I'm treated to an episode of my favorite UA-cam show a day early?? it's like it was released early just for me!! lol happy birthday to me! :D
Dragon Quest 1 did some of the things that Phantasy Star did. Like the different battle arena backgrounds. Of course it didn't have the FP dungeon exploration, but as you mentioned, it sounded more like a chore than fun with how it was designed.
Definitely agree on Phantasy Star over Final Fantasy. I played through the first SaGa, or you know, Final Fantasy Legend, recently. I was shocked at how much more forward a lot of the ideas in this were mechanically compared to Final Fantasy. Same with Romancing SaGa compared to... Maybe even Square these days.
Fire Emblem: Mystery of the Emblem on SNES VS. Shining Force: Legacy of Great Intention on the Genesis. Alternatively (since Fire Emblem: Mystery of the Emblem is Japanese only unless you use a fan translation, thus making it not official): Fire Emblem on GBA VS. Shining Force Resurrection of the Dark Dragon on GBA.
I just got into Game Sack this past winter, and I ended up binge-watching every episode within the first couple months. I like the self-awareness and low-key humor. Are there other gaming channels with a similar vibe?
Ace Combat vs Lethal Skies Sega Rally vs Rally Cross Daytona USA vs Ridge Racer Need for Speed vs Test Drive Virtua Cop vs Time Crisis Tekken vs Virtua Fighter R-type Delta vs Einhander Jet Moto vs Wip3out Twisted Metal 2 vs Vigilante 8 Awesome Possum vs Bubsy Ecco: Tides of Time vs Kolibri I really need to start making my own videos...
After playing Einhander and R-Type Delta back to back I'm going to have to go.with R-Type Delta, it plays much better where Einhander gets tediously difficult around stage 4.
These skits are so inspiring. We do a local comedy/variety web show called TRASHburgh and I'm trying very hard to make sure I'm not subconsciously stealing Game Sack skits as I work on new videos.
While I know you guys aren't really fans of emulation, given your game library, I think an emulator battle episode would be very interesting. Obviously some systems are in relatively early stages of emulation, but something like "Bsnes vs. SNES9x. vs. ZSNES" would be fun.
Hey guys, I love your videos, but what would you think about putting a small graphic showing maybe the name of the game, publisher and possibly developer in the lower-corner while the game footage is playing? I know you always say what the name of the game is as you are going into that segment, but easily distracted people like me may miss it, realize the game looks cool during the footage and then I have to rewind back to see the name and/or who it is by.
Return Fire is one of my favorite games to play with my dad. I used to be a total bastard and lay landmines in such a way as to create mutually assured destruction. The multiplayer is CRAZY good, as you have to determine weather you'd rather go searching for your opponent's flag or start playing defense.
I apologize if it seems like I'm spamming with my comments, but wow, Guerilla War! One of my very favorite NES games. I love Commando but it just doesn't compare. Guerilla War is simultaneously easier (infinite continues and grenades) and harder (you need to rescue hostages on the battlefield and in the heat of battle you might accidentally kill them, which deducts points). A blast of a game.
Guerrilla War is a game I completely forgot about. I remember when I first played it and saw it was SNK my first thought was "So...the development staff was like 'What if Ikari Warriors didn't suck?'" Edit: Also, I don't know why Phantasy Star just doesn't get its due. Long before Final Fantasy had its emotional death with Aeris...Phantasy Star II (1989) had Nei, and Phantasy Star IV (1993) had Alys (not to be confused for Alis from the first game). The difference is that FFVII basically gives away the fact that Aeris isn't long for the world (think about her levelling progression)...but both Nei and (especially) Alys come out of left field. The death of Alys was the first time I ever really felt emotional about a plot element from a game. It is a real heartstring moment. And now...we have a million Final Fantasy games, but the West didn't even get Phantasy Star Online 2...we got screwed out of a good game. I really liked Phantasy Star Universe (especially with the AotI expansion)...but I remember when I kept trying to get my friends to play back in 2007...they had never heard of it. Do yourself a favor and play the classic Phantasy Star quadrilogy and also Phantasy Star Portable 2 for the PSP. Seriously...play them. The original Phantasy Star Online hasn't aged particularly well (mainly the stiff combat), but seriously. Rant over.
if the master system userbase was closer to that of the nes, phantasy star could have been the final fantasy killer, and the series might ended up there along with sakaguchi's career. phantasy star might as well be the best rpg of the 8-bit era.
I started watching on the train. When I got to my stop, I sat down at the station, cracked open a beer and watched the second half. Please never stop making videos. Cheers!
Great episode! I love Final Fantasy, but Phantasy Star is for sure a better game. Hopefully more people will check it out thanks to this truth! The ending skit was brill too!
Hyperstone Heist costs a hell of a lot more than Turtles in Time? Maybe its different at your local retro stores in the Denver area, but on Ebay HH is actually a bit cheaper than TiT cartridge only and significantly cheaper complete in box.
Dammit, Joe! Here I was, living for the past 25 years in blissful ignorance thinking that the Foot Soldiers flying at me were Mode 7. Thanks a lot.
Game Sack continues to be the best retro-game channel
Best channel*
While I don't always agree with them, you can't argue with the production quality, relatively thorough but concise reviews and good balance of information with a touch of humor.
Give Console Wars a shot
Console Wars is awful.
I completely agree. I think there are some good alternatives out there but Game Sack is definitely my go-to. The presentation and production value are definitely top-notch.
UA-cam is lucky to have you two. Every single episode levels up in quality! Awesome comparative episode!
Man Phantasy Star really was ahead of its time. Those graphics are pretty mindblowing for that era, the smooth turning in the dungeons looks better there than it does in Shining in the Darkness on the Genesis.
+Game Sack - Looking forward to a Game Battle of Shining Force vs Fire Emblem
So much love for Phantasy Star. That was my first RPG and the music still manages to send chills down my spine. Like you guys said, way ahead of its time.
You know who made the Talespin game?
The same devs as *GREENDOG - The beached surfer DUDE!*
NOOOO!!!!
Game Sack videos are a calming presence that always make me fall into a restful nap.
Oh! I got some ideas:
Mario 64 vs Sonic Adventure, Best First 3D Platformer in The Series.
No contest when it comes to UT it's waaaaay better imo
The winner of UT vs Q3A is OUTTRIGGER. (At least against the Dreamcast versions)
i'm really glad TaleSpin won
lol
Psch, I thought TaleSpin was much better than TaleSpin.
Naw man, TaleSpin was obviously superior.
you guys got it all wrong tale spin has the best gameplay
remember when they talked about Talespin?
Just watched all the Game Sacks for first time. Joe and Dave are awesome. where have I been >
Nothing I love better than watching a brand-new sack right in front of my eyes.
Oh, and a new episode of Game Sack is good, too.
shymickey6 How the testicle did you come to that conclusion, you pervert?
I would love to see a hack of Hyperstone Heist putting in the screen-throw effect. I'm sure the genesis can handle that. While at it, that black bar behind the status info is not necessary either, but rather a sign the developers were in a rush. A similar black bar was in early screen shots of SF2: Special Champion Edition, but gone in the actual release.
Dave slapping Joe never gets old.
my mood changes when i hear that guitar intro. thanks for this excellent channel. It's like going back to the 90's.
I would love to do a GBA episode. I hope we get around to it someday..
The first person graphics on Phantasy Star look incredible for 8 bits.
If only Friday the 13th on the NES looked that good
Freaking love those end segments! Plz never stop doing them!!
I love SNK's Guerilla War - It's the grandpa to SNK's metal slugg.
Micro Machines 2 or 96 (Genesis) vs Mario Kart (SNES)... honestly, those MM games were criminally underrated!
I love Hyperstone Heist. I used to leave it on the title screen and demo mode while I ate cereal before school.
by far the best retro games show. thanks guys.
well played on Phantasy Star. It is certainly well ahead of FF in every category.
I LOVE these types of episodes. Please keep them coming! Wish you guys were coming to Too Many Games!
A few suggestions for the future:
Capcom vs. SNK 2 v. SNK v Capcom
Shining in the Darkness (Genesis) vs. Arcana (SNES)
Final Fight 3 (SNES) vs. Streets of Rage 2 (Genesis)
Hey, it's the guy who complained on Facebook about having to wait another week. Thanks for the upload. I love you guys.
I'm I'm drunk as duck, eating great value crisp rice in my kitchen at 2:25 in the morning Ann game sack just put up a new video... I feel completely complete now... :))
I wish I could like this comment 15 times... shells and cheese, btw
Gosh, I need to get some groceries...
Ahahahahaha, six towns, that's too adorable. :D
The bit at the end was great, too. I think the show's name should be modified to "Game Sack: Hosted by The Game Dads"
Guerilla war is that one game I keep forgetting the name of, but I never forget the game itself. I've played that game so much when I was little at a friend's house.
Are you dead yet?
When Joe does the whole matchup and winner voice here, he reminds me of a pumped up PA announcer.
today is my birthday (32) and I'm treated to an episode of my favorite UA-cam show a day early?? it's like it was released early just for me!! lol happy birthday to me! :D
happy burthday you old sack o' shit (JK) XP
Nekro Bun many thanks!
Clayton Eugene Happy birthday! Welcome to Lvl 32!
Happy Birthday!
Dragon Quest 1 did some of the things that Phantasy Star did. Like the different battle arena backgrounds. Of course it didn't have the FP dungeon exploration, but as you mentioned, it sounded more like a chore than fun with how it was designed.
Curiously, machine gun is misspelled "Mashine gun" at 24:07 (NES Commando). Very nice episode.Thank you, guys!
gamesack is the greatest gaming channel on youtube. no bullshit, just solid gameplay and retro nostalgia.
Joe, so glad to see you didn't let E3 deter you from posting a new video. Thanks for the post.
You should consider doing an ep for light gun games. Lord knows most can't enjoy them now a days.
LCD...
OK.
yeah
but the question is when will it happen????
great Idea
Tell me about it. I still have Point Blank 2 and the Guncon, both by Namco, but I can't use 'em.
I would like to see these game battle episodes more frequently.
Wow. Guerrilla War looks like my kind of game! Thanks for letting us know about it.
Thank you guys for putting the episode up! You guys rock!
seriously one of the best episodes from you guys!
these 'vs.' episodes are awesome!! Thanks guys!!
The part with 3 games against each other (Talespin) was pretty hardcore. You should do more of that.
Honestly one of my favorite episodes so far O_O Maybe it was the game selection or Joe's Mega Power voice but I've already rewatched this.
Newer 3ds? I'd rather wait for the Even Newer 3ds.
Or at least the Newer 2ds.
That's a dumb name for a system! *SMACK*
4DS
Awwww I love this channel, especially the endings. Please never stop creating the ending scenes. Always have my laughing at the end. :)
Alternatively (since Fire Emblem: Mystery of the Emblem is Japanese only unless you use a fan translation, thus making it not official):
Fire Emblem on GBA VS. Shining Force Resurrection of the Dark Dragon on GBA.
Shining Force 2 would be more fair, it came out in '93, Fire Emblem 3 came out in 94
You should get the Newer 3DS. And hurry before they make the Newest 3DS.
Game sack! what do your parents think of your UA-cam channel? Do they watch it? I am not making fun of you guys! I am just curious.
They find it amusing I guess. I doubt they are regular viewers.
They don't watch it but they are happy that we do it.
Game Sack your parents are casuals.
Dave, can you guys make a gamesack vid. pitting arcade boards against each other? the sega y board vs. taito ....orsomething like that?
Only if Joe has the set up to do that. I personally don't own any arcade boards.
Early release. One can only take so much Sack without going into Sack-overload.
I just got into Game Sack this past winter, and I ended up binge-watching every episode within the first couple months. I like the self-awareness and low-key humor. Are there other gaming channels with a similar vibe?
The world needs a Game Sack Parralax Scrolling episode
Talespin>Talespin>Talespin nuff said.
Great way to do cross-console game versus, guys.
Keep it up!
Ace Combat vs Lethal Skies
Sega Rally vs Rally Cross
Daytona USA vs Ridge Racer
Need for Speed vs Test Drive
Virtua Cop vs Time Crisis
Tekken vs Virtua Fighter
R-type Delta vs Einhander
Jet Moto vs Wip3out
Twisted Metal 2 vs Vigilante 8
Awesome Possum vs Bubsy
Ecco: Tides of Time vs Kolibri
I really need to start making my own videos...
do it!
einhander is better than r type delta.
After playing Einhander and R-Type Delta back to back I'm going to have to go.with R-Type Delta, it plays much better where Einhander gets tediously difficult around stage 4.
Probably still the best show on THE INTERNETS!
Oh boy, gonna get me some Game Sack!
compare chess, scrabble and checkers across multiple systems
These skits are so inspiring.
We do a local comedy/variety web show called TRASHburgh and I'm trying very hard to make sure I'm not subconsciously stealing Game Sack skits as I work on new videos.
Interesting channel. I'll watch a few more.
The best half hour I spent today:)
Dave White Forever vs Pit Fighter!!
LoL. That's a lopsided fight.
Love to have my early morning cup of coffee watching a brand new episode of Game Sack! *wink* ;o]
Return to Fire is also playable on the Saturn, the unrealised port was leaked and is downloadable at Sega Saturn.net.
Which is of course down at the moment.
mass destruction is good too
Just 2 different games. It's like comparing Hostile Waters with Battlezone 2(that missing strategy part at all).
But FPS on 3DO goes as usual i see (c)
New episode, sweet! Thank you guys for all the great stuff! I'm very thankful.
Really enjoying the Game Battle episodes so far! Nice work guys!
One developer focused episode I'm surprised you haven't done is based on Treasure.
While I know you guys aren't really fans of emulation, given your game library, I think an emulator battle episode would be very interesting. Obviously some systems are in relatively early stages of emulation, but something like "Bsnes vs. SNES9x. vs. ZSNES" would be fun.
How is it I'm still learning about NES games I missed out on? How did I not play Guerrilla War?
You should do Airwolf on the NES vs Airwolf on the Famicom. They are totally different
I love this layout! More please!!
OH MAN. I've been waiting a long time for this. Loved the original vid way back in the day. :D
Return Fire is one of my favorite games to play with my dad.
I used to be a total bastard and lay landmines in such a way as to create mutually assured destruction.
The multiplayer is CRAZY good, as you have to determine weather you'd rather go searching for your opponent's flag or start playing defense.
LoL. Same here. I would always try and lay land mines around my buddies base. He only has 3 jeeps and then it's game over for him.
Great Video. Please make much more Battles like this video !!!
Shit pickle
Another good episode, never played Contra on Genesis/Megadrive but it must have been good to edge out Gunstar Heroes. Great face slap as always.
It is
Guerrilla War is a game I completely forgot about. I remember when I first played it and saw it was SNK my first thought was "So...the development staff was like 'What if Ikari Warriors didn't suck?'"
Edit: Also, I don't know why Phantasy Star just doesn't get its due. Such quality can only come from *these* legends.
Love the "Game Battle" series!
How about Castlevania Dracula X on SNES vs Castlevania Bloodlines on Genesis?
Great choice!!
Just whish this game battling was a separate series. Greatest channel on uTube. 💎
It hurt my soul when you picked Hard Corps, but the end skit was so good I can look past it.
Seriously it’s not even a real contra game lol
if the master system userbase was closer to that of the nes, phantasy star could have been the final fantasy killer, and the series might ended up there along with sakaguchi's career.
phantasy star might as well be the best rpg of the 8-bit era.
Glad you guys posted tonight and didn't put it off due to E3. You guys make my week. Well, my every other week. On the off-weeks I wander aimlessly.
I started watching on the train. When I got to my stop, I sat down at the station, cracked open a beer and watched the second half. Please never stop making videos. Cheers!
"Because even dinosaurs want you dead." Worth a thumbs up just for that.
Friday night gamesack while I'm at a kickback......well I guess I'll be watching while I drink :)
love your sketches at the end
Game Sack on a Friday? It's a summer miracle!
Resident Evil vs Silent Hill, Castlevania Adventure vs Castlevania ReBirth... those would be cool on game battle. Another great episode guys!!
I just bought Mass Destruction at a yard sale for $2 15 minutes ago! I get home and see this. HAHA
Awesome! It's a great game.
Staccato-with each sound or note sharply detached or separated from the others.
Not one Game Sack episode disappoints,it's hard to create a channel of your own when you have competition like this...I give up!!!
Great episode! I love Final Fantasy, but Phantasy Star is for sure a better game. Hopefully more people will check it out thanks to this truth!
The ending skit was brill too!
worth the wait.. this show is great man! thank you
I leave for a wedding in the morning and will be gone all weekend. Thank you for uploading tonight.
Hyperstone Heist costs a hell of a lot more than Turtles in Time? Maybe its different at your local retro stores in the Denver area, but on Ebay HH is actually a bit cheaper than TiT cartridge only and significantly cheaper complete in box.
I just woke up and I thought i skipped a day, thought it was Sunday lol
That slap at the end was great. Game Sack, you guys rock!
