Hello Young Lovers is the opening song from their 1967, "In a Mellow Mood" album; excellent Lp, which includes the original version of For Once in My Life, a must have for any Temps aficionado.
Love hear Paul sing lead awesome, talented, gifted, vocals amazing had lot range, lots singer don't have it but he did.....one the best lead singer, he also sang lead on lots song ppl don't know about....
Love Autumn Leaves. The Temps had the best 5 part harmony I have ever heard. Paul we one of the most underrated singers. Love to hear Melvin sing anything and Dennis killed those ad libs.
The 1964-1971 period of "The Temptations" represented the group during their golden era. The chemistry between all it's members was undeniable and incredible. Their look, sound, style and moves put them into a class on their own. Even the transition from David Ruffin to Dennis Edwards didn't see them miss a beat. It was smooth and flawless..... They laid down a successful blueprint that many other groups would copy for years to come. However watching them at their peak is truly something special.
How awesome is this, The Temptations singing Broadway Show Tunes :-) Such a cool mix of "Big Band, Swing, Vocal Jazz", AND I love the black suits, very classy.
Good god awe mighty! WOW! NEVER saw this performance before! voices blended so perfectly ! they all had a sweet grit to their voices that intertwined like no other ! This word sums it all up! PERFECTION!
I was there at the Ed Sullivan Show in 1969, and took photos of them rehearsing that second number in the clip. As someone else mentioned, the two songs shown were not both 1966, as titled above. They were my favorite group!
Loved this song by "The Tempts" (as we called them) when I was a ninth grader in '66. Now it is more than fifty years later and I have four grandchildren and Otis is still performing onstage! Remarkable!
he called ALL young men "boys". to him they were just boys. he also used the word "girls" with groups like the Vandellas and any other girl group. in no way was there any even microscopic intention of demeaning anyone. settle down. all this bs is being manufactured. don't believe everything you hear!!
The contrast of Ed Sullivan introducing The Temptations as boys did not destroy the singing voices, the mark of soul singing and their beautiful originality.
Alabama didn't have much to be proud of during this time. Motown gave us a lot to be proud of. J5, Temptations, Supremes, Jackson family, Diana, Flo, Martha Reeves and even the Secretary.
That would be the true example of best to worse in the dancing category of the Temps, Melvin actually suffered from Rheumatoid Arthritis since his early 20's and Eddie and Otis made it quite and perfectly clear that they were in fact, not dancers.
The first clip was from 1966 but they did perform "Hello Young Lovers" live with Dennis on the "T.C.B." Soundtrack and "The Temptations Live at the Copa" from 1968 and 'The Temptations Show" in 1969 after he took David's place.
@@TheRoland1947: According to the Ed Sullivan Show, The Tempts made their first appearance on the show May 28, 1967! The album "The Temptations In A Mellow Mood" was released November 27th of that year!
I grew up on Motown...I remember when smokey had his own TV show and the temptations had their own show and even flip Wilson had his:-own show..it just brings back memories...
+brandon stewart, Otis voice is "soulful ballads"..........Motown took the decision to write songs suited for Eddi and David' voice. Even Paul did not get much songs to be a lead on. Eddi himself states in an interview..."David Ruffin & Eddi Kendricks: Soul Forever (featuring Dennis Edwards)" line 41:37........UA-cam video......That management made decisions that were not in the best interest of the group, and that he wanted to leave the group from 1965 because of that. You see, the Tempts were made up of FIVE LEAD SINGERS WHO TOOK LEADS.........THAT IS: until Smokey began writing songs for the group, pushing Paul in the background, he wrote songs specifically for David and Eddi, then Dennis.......A business decision.......You all need to do your homework. Anyway Otis sang lead on "Don't Send Me Away", I Ain't Got Nothing", "Darling Stand By Me", and "I See My Child". The first time I listened to "I See My Child", I thought it was a number from THE SPINNERS, hence a mistake. If Otis could not sing, the harmony would not be so fantastic, and everyone praise The Tempts on having the greatest harmony of all the groups of all times
Please don't sleep on Otis's voice lol. He played a huge role in their background vocals. Otis was 1st tenor, 2nd tenor and baritone so his vocal range is wide. According to him, the backgrounds was his baby so he loved it. Check out "Don't Send Me Away" and let me know what you think of Otis.
Linda Hines, I don't need you to tell me where to go, unless you want to be told the same. My comment is addressed to who posted the comment to which I replied sweetie, asking if Eddie surpasses Phillip Bailey in the realm of Falsettos.
james alford There would not have been. Phillip Bailey-Bailey is on record as to paying homage to Eddie. I know about Bailey’s range and his keen vocal leadership. But I’ll take Eddie because of his influence and versatility. He also had a stellar solo career with Grammy nominated music and million selling albums.
I'm not quite sure how you can say that there would not have been a Phillip Bailey if it were not for Eddie Kendricks; Eddie didn't create the falsetto tenor, he's simply the most popular and well known. I'm extremely aware of Eddie Kendrick's career as a Temptation and as a solo artist, so I'm not quite sure of your point aside from expressing your knowledge, which anyone who's over the age of fifty and knows R&B music would be well aware of.
james alford: My point is that music is not created in a vacuum. My assertion is that Eddie Kendricks set the template for Phillip Bailey and many of his contemporaries. Maybe it’s an overstatement to insinuate that Bailey would not have existed as a singer but he certainly would have had fewer influences as he was developing his distinctive vocal sound. Eddie is the greatest; I didn’t say he was the best. But In his prime, Eddie was singing a multiplicity of genres as a Temptation and successful as a solo artist. Few soul tenors could match Eddies’ style or versatility. All of these high singing brothers have been influenced by the thin man from Alabama.

The many facets of talent in the Temps.
Ed Sullivan called them boys as a term of endearment. After all Ed was a lot older than them. Young boys or Young men. Don't be offended.
Ed was threatened many times for having Black performers on his show.
Correct. He called the Beatles "boys" and referred to Elvis as "a fine young boy".
That's how I took it as well. I reckon he'd refer to some of the female groups as "girls" (or "ladies", of course)
he called ALL young men "boys". to him they were just boys. he also used the word "girls" with groups like the Vandellas and any other girl group. in no way was there any even microscopic intention of demeaning anyone. settle down. all this bs is being manufactured. don't believe everything you hear!!
