The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

Everyone talks about David and Eddie who are definitely amazing!! But Paul was extremely underrated as a vocalist. Dennis too!
Paul had the best voice. Was the glue that bind. Paul Williams as smooth as silk.I always wonder why Melvin proclaimed paul as the best dancer .David was good Melvin was awesome his! self. But Paul Williams was so damn smooth, seems as though he could have been a dance instructor. Check their The Way You Do The Things You Do . That is Paul's choreography. Liked his take on it better than the guy who eventually took over with the dance routines. As Berry took that from Paul. Thought they were too flashy..

@@beatricebarfield6894 I saw the temps at the Cape Cod Melody Tent and i was walking by the dressing room by the bar when out stepped Melvin and Otis. In my deepest voice I sang I'm sending you red roses and violets and Melvin quickly came back and sang the Roses mean i love you and the violets mean I'll always be true girl. We shook hands and i thought i was in heaven for the moment.

I don’t think he was sick around this time. Around 1968/69 that’s when he was getting sick.
How long had he had it all his life or just from time he was diagnosed with it ?
I admire him for performing with sickle cell anemia. It's a full body debilitating disease that's beyond the description of "just pain". It has never been researched properly or diagnosed because it affects black people. Speaking truth and research. God bless anyone that has this life altering trauma🙏💐🙏

See the difference between the Original 5. Paul manage to put every bit of pain in his voice so I don’t think they knew how to market him on leads. He sings with all the emotions, he tells a story with his eyes, Paul is very underrated!!

@mybabba: "Don't Look Back" was the "B" side. Paul Williams was Tempts' LEAD SINGER from 1962-1964 (actually, all members were lead singers) Other than Eddie Kendricks contribution, Paul sings lead on almost every song on "Meet The Temptations" (1963). With the acquisition of David Ruffin on New Years Day 1964, that's when a lot of the leads went to Ruffin- Kendricks. However, Paul STILL had songs on their other albums; "Temptin' Temptations" (1965) and "Gettin' Ready" (1966).

Paul actually had quite a bit of leads. He was their original lead singer! I have a whole playlist on Spotify of Paul leads. Just look up Paul Williams Fans!

This is the reason Paul is my favorite Temptation lead. David definitely did his thing but its just something about Paul's voice. Highly underrated.

@Jonathan Clary: And to the young man who joined after Eddie Kendricks left: Otis Robert "Damon" Harris, Jr (1950-2013)...the acquisitions of Dennis (replacing David) and Damon (replacing Eddie) saved the Temptations from folding. Though different from the Classic Five, their era was effective, entertaining..not run-of-the-mill; as the group is today.
IMO... a lot of The Temptations songs were written for the type of voice that Dennis and David had... I wish there had been a writer for Paul Williams, I love to hear Paul Williams sing on lead. Paul voice was smooth and sultry.

Paul was the heart and soul of the Temptations, best dancer, tall, dark, and fine with a sexy, soulful voice who enunciated every word. He was probably in great pain many times due to Sickle Cell Anemia. God bless his soul!

Paul had a voice that was reminiscent of Jerry Butler.
This is a rare clip because Paul didn’t get lead songs. Most of the leads with David or Eddie. Paul is so underrated this performance was great.

Paul and Richard were the leads before David then Richard street left he suggested david the movie say Al but in Richard's book he says al never sang lead it was at first him Eddie and Paul on leads

David and Paul had similar voices, but I think David just had that special "something", the natural front man they needed to push them over the top. That's certainly taking NOTHING away from Eddie or Paul. He definitely enjoyed his occasional lead and he always put his foot in it just to let us all know he had it too! I think his heart was more in the choreography, tho. I always get a kick out of him just showing OUT!

Glad that "Don't Look Back" was performed and now posted. While it fared better on the R&B charts, it only lasted a little more than a month on Billboard's Hot 100 at the beginning of 1966. Always enjoy a Paul Williams solo.

It's so sad Paul died in 73 at 34 years old. He was the heart and soul of the temps. His voice is so touching. He gave his all. RIP Mr. Paul Williams 😞

Elbridge Bryant was the 5th original Tempt. He eventually got fired from the group and was replaced by David Ruffin - ushering in the Classic 5 era.🤷🏽❤️🎶

I gotta say I absolutely love Paul he emenates emotion not just in his beautiful raspy masculine voice, but it's in his face he wears the emotions and I receive it well. I love his little random moves at :33 and 1:25 with the "walk" and they all walk up, and the wink at the end made me smile. He's adorable 💖
To me it seemed they were all happy Paul was getting lead and even David took a backseat I do not see jealousy I see support.
