Great show. Disappointing ending, but a great show. The fact he saw what his life could have been. America free and prosperous, a healthy and happy family and he has to return to a conquered America, a fractured family and a dead son, not to mention the guilt of his betrayal to his friends, his country and his basic humanity. Damn, was this a great show.

The show overall was great and Rufus Sewell did a phenomenal job, but I feel like the scifi elements sort of ruined it for me. I personally would've preferred if the origin of the film reels was kept ambiguous and they focused on the political side more.

I think the ending is ok. There's too much séries that drag along indefinitely to the point i don't care anymore. Here the mystery was revealed and the stakes where clear. The nazis rule the world unopposed, there are other universes where they failed, we have to save those before they invade with their machine. It could have benefitted from the last few episode be expanded and made into a proper last season but it was ok overall.

Look up ZEN, he played a Italian police officer in Rome he was excellent as the Lead Role Aurelio Zen. They made 3 of the 10 books into 90 minutes films, and they actually filmed in Rome, an excellent series and he was great in the lead role.
5.0 out of 5 stars Rufus Sewell is perfect as Detective Zen in this cracking series of films.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 15 June 2019
Quite possibly one of the best 'cop' dramas ever produced by the BBC. Rufus Sewell is perfectly cast as the Venetian detective working in Rome, Aurelio Zen. Michael Dibdin's Zen stories are already a great starting point but the cast and crew here have produced a series of gems. The balance of tension, humour and romance is brilliantly handled and delivered at a perfect pace. The only downside is knowing that the man responsible for commissioning at the BBC decided that he would not give the go ahead for any more episodes to be made. I know the person in question had what they thought were sound and well considered reasons for his decision but it doesn't alter the fact the he was a completely short-sighted incompetent of unparalled magnitude. It's too late now for this cast and too late most certainly for the talented Francesco Quinn (the image of his father, Anthony) who tragically died of heart failure while out jogging with his children just a short time after this series was first aired. But all these sadness's to one side, this is a cracking series which will not disappoint.

Could've gone on for much longer & gotten so many viewers, making John Smith restore democracy & redeem himself in that sense. The only way to redeem yourself in that scenario is to stop the persecution you got involved with. Don't even have to change much of the plot, just make it so Helen doesn't contact the resistance but still confronts John. That way John sees the wrongs he has done & rectifies them.

such a missed opportunity for this absolutely brilliant character. 4 seasons of building him up into this morally grey character, with the hints of a redemption arc... At the end of episode 9 I had hopes that he would unify the US and take down progessively the nazi system in america.. But no, they threw his character away. He was the only man capable of taking it all down, but for some reason he didn't. Sure he said "I don't know how to". Well maybe the writers should've made him realise how to. He had good intentions but idk why they made him do the concentration camps... That makes him an evil character and kills off everything they had worked on before. Too bad honestly. I wish instead of killing himself he had chosen to help the resistance and go back to his daughters...

He did not believe he could be saved, even by himself. That's the entire point of what he says about choices and other lives before shooting himself. Everyone sayn that John's ending has no sense, but his character arc was totally coherent through the seasons. He has always acted to protect his family, and in order to do so he has betrayed his country and war friends, which build deep regrets in him. He tries to save his son, only to discover he cannot, nor in his reality nor in all the others. He has no interest in power, but he's forced to rank up to protect his family from Himmler, and in the end he's crushed by his own role as Fhurer and lose every bit of control he had on things. But most of all, he's crushed by the fact that he has been struggling so hard and yet made all the wrong choices, making him the worst version of himself. This is a masterpiece of character, played by a very talented actor.

him allying with the german nazis even after the death of the german high command (effectively returning all North American power back to American born nazis) made no sense. He saw the opportunity to stop being a nazi but he continued to do so. Thats the part that makes no sense imo. I personally loved his arc, he was probably my favorite/the most interesting character in the show (except dor maybe Joe who's ending was real fuckin shit even tho it aligns with the book), although I think his ending coulda been better. The thing that was the saving grace in this whole show, was John Smiths borderline Shakespearean story. A man capable of incredible deeds brought down by his inherently flawed character, and meeting a grisly end.
The political situation of this season makes absolutely no fucking sense though, and I really hate the implications of the many factions involved.
Like for instance the Japanese empire falling because apparently too democratic to beat the Nazis at anything, despite that making zero sense on multiple levels. Given that democratic countries tend to excel technologically over authoritarian ones, and the Japanese Empire was literally the farthest fucking thing from democratic.
The BCR attacking the Japanese before fighting the fucking Nazis, like, seriously? Why? The Japanese were literally their ONLY PROTECTION in this world from just getting genocided completely by the Reich. Why on gods creek earth would they not cut a deal with the Japanese? The Empire in this world would have been more than happy to use the BCR as proxy fighters in the American Reich. It’s common fucking sense. This happened all the time in the real world. The Japanese literally had the Yakuza and an anarchic zone between them and the Reich. Just give the BCR some guns and send them into the Reich by smuggling them in via the Yakuza.
Finally WHY ARE THE NAZIS SO FUCKING STUPID? Like, I understand that they are Nazis. Not exactly people with any common sense. It’s the reason why they lost the war to begin with. However, THEY NEVER SHOW THAT. Throughout the series the Nazis are portrayed as insanely competent, and not just because of John Smith. All despite their insane infighting at the leadership level. Like honestly, how has this empire not crumbled already? You have coups and assassinations happening left and right, and yet somehow they are able to control half the fucking planet?
Man, this show just drives me nuts.

John realizing how pathetic he is and killing himself is honestly like the best possible ending for the character. John gets an iota of moral clarity, which is about all the redemption or self-reckoning he really deserves, with what was shown of him throughout and the room the show had left to conclude things. He always completely deferred on the moral question of what he was doing by appealing to the Nazis might or control, and in the process propped it up and held it together. Maybe we want to see him as strong because he accomplishes a lot of things in the show and is a character with a lot of agency and competence, but he's too distracted from or too much of a coward to think of what the meaning of his actions and support of the Nazis really is or means, and this is the natural consequence of 'enabling' that. You don't get to just appeal or avail yourself to evil because 'evil won and therefore it's right', that's just a way of fleeing from the responsibility of having to adjudicate between right and wrong, and that was something *consistently* shown in John's character throughout the show, no matter how 'personally hard' any one particular decision or moment may have been on him. He didn't really have an inner compass or authenticity, and largely let his environment dictate his values and what he did, without any real complaint or resistance at any point.

I was always thinking he had something up his sleeve to bring down the Reiche instead he was only interested in getting more power

Seeing as there are other realities, he might even come back.

If Smith survived I wish the season keep going and at the final season he decided to restore America and he tricks the Germans

besides the story and character decisions, whether he did something good, or bad....
i loved and enjoyed evry single scene with him! can't say that about any other character.
i liked Juliana, Kido and Takomi and Joe, but they all had like half of their scenes boring me to death....

The end is so unrealistic. Why would a bunch of Resistance fighters be able to storm a Nazi base?

Let's face it: Season 1 ended with the impression of this alternate-reality Hitler being an absolute beast and a mastermind, John Smith being literally the human incarnation of all good espionage/counterintel/detective work skimms combined... season 2 was real authentic battle for power with all the bells and whistles of a very deep conspiracy/thriller, and the later episodes just became some washy antihero resistance soap with this crown jewel of a turd ending.
I mean of ALL the endings they could have picked they made this. John got killed allright... but not by bullet, but with the script.
