Honestly, the entire show could have been just about the internal politics and conspiracies of a hypothetical Nazi empire, and the show would have been just as good, probably better.

Himmler knew Smith was probably guilty but he liked him so much he was willing to overlook it and oust his accuser.
He trust in Smith, not on Rockwell.

@Son Gohan It was not because of the false accusations but because the top players did not like him/them. For instance, Himmler and Goering fabricated claims on many prominent members while fighting to get to the top, but Hitler did not mind because he wanted his loyal cadre in certain positions.
So it was not a question of honor AT ALL but simply of usefulness to the Fuhrer. If false accusations served the purpose, they did not care about honor.
And about Himmler and Smith, Himmler knew all that (SS had an intelligence agency of their own) and he, more than once, covered for Smith as he was preparing HIM to take over USA as he saw him as more loyal than others plus he could get the job done. That is why he overlooked many treasonous activities of Smith during the course of the series.

@@pdhung3012 I hate how Smith never became the main character. He felt so much more developed and relatable than 90% of the cast. His story was the most intriguing as a man just trying to protect his family. Juliana was fine at first but it soon became clear how manipulative she was to those around her. I mean just look at the amount of men she used to get her way. The BRC wasn’t any better and it soon felt like I couldn’t root for either side. I think a better angle the story could’ve gone in was Smith becoming the President of the United States after fighting off the Nazi and Japanese forces within the country using the loyalty and following of the American people. That’s honestly where I thought the story was going that he would rise through the ranks and eventually liberate the country from facism and in the end save his family. But, instead we got such a lack luster ending of him just offing himself.
That’s a real life example, sometimes its just better to stay silent and let things play out
Credit has to be given to Rockwell's actor, the way his eyes just slowly turn predatory as he's leveling out his accusations to Smith is deeply unsettling.
He's pretty awesome in 13 hours
but notice at 2:18 it's Smith's eyes that turned predatory after what Hoover said, it's like playing UNO reverse card
And then how he struggles to contain his shock when Hoover backstabs him, to project dangerous irritation when he turns to ask Hoover just what the F that means.

The scary thing about this is John Smith was the only character in the room who wasn't a real life person, Himmler, Hoover and Rockwell all existed and they were just as dangerous in their day.

If it wasnt for him, im doubtful if anyone else would have managed to have the charisma and the will to make Nazi Party the major power in Germany and take over everything in the country.

Anyway I trust the American electoral system. Practically everyone who's an expert on it vouches for it. If you google it there's probably a straightforward explanation for the incident like mine.

It’s odd, I’ve never been able to find out the name of the actor who plays Himmler.
I didn't like their choice of actor to portray Himmler. Himmler was a demented cross between Jeffry Dahmer and an IBM computer nerd. The actor they chose makes Himmler look like a South American dictator.
Hoover made a clever career move there. He helped to get rid of one guy while immediately letting the other guy know that he can see everything and provide evidence of anything. And that if he feels like it, he can also make evidence disappear. The other guy will now remember these facts for a long time. Trouble just is that while this makes Hoover seem like a useful person, who should not be messed with, it also establishes that he's a powerful double-edged sword who can betray anyone when it's useful for him.
Smith knew that he could never out-maneuver Hoover, so he had to take him out the old-fashioned way.
You are, sadly, mistaken. Hoover did not do it because he wanted to but because he was ordered to. Himmler KNEW about all those evidence and it was him who pressed Hoover to make the evidence go away (John Smith played a little part as well) as he was preparing John to take over. He and John talk about that later in the series. Himmler wanted a pragmatist that owed a lot to him - that was a way to keep him obedient and also get the job done in America. That is why he chose Smith over Rockwell, and why he protected him throughout the series. Hoover did nothing, he always just listened to what the top guy has to say - and between Smith, Rockwell and Himmler, it was clear who the top guy was.

Rockwell thought he had done that. However, he was a little too trusting of Hoover. The real J Edgar Hoover was a slime ball, I’d imagine a version of him working for the Nazis would be even worse.

One minor gripe. National Socialists never used the term Nazi. The word predated their existence and was a derogatory term for a person from the countryside like a bumpkin. I noticed Rockwell said Nazi when speaking to John Smith.
I’m chalking it up to artistic license. The showrunners I figure did this to keep things simple for the audience. Plus, it’s an alternate universe, so maybe in that universe the Nazis are okay with calling themselves Nazis. 🤷🏻♂️
This show is fiction remember that, it's not even historical fiction, it's just fiction, which I have no problem with, but in reality america would be the same as this timeline, even if Germany had won the war.

Their portrayal of J. Edgar Hoover was perfect, he spied on everyone, just for the fun of it.

William Forsythe made a great job playing Hoover. He looks and sounds exactly like him. It wasn't shocking to know that Hoover guy fitted so well in the Nazi Regime after the war was lost, he already had pretty messed story on this world, with the whole blackmail, illegal surveillance and other illegal stuff. It was nice nod to point out some people never change no matter how much the world does.
In reality the Nazis would have likely executed Hoover and probably all other high ranking federal US officers the way they executed members of the Soviet KNVD when they captured them. They might have kept other lower officials alive and "reeducated" them into Nazi doctrines.
Those rumors are 100% factual.

Season 4 was so disappointing...... the last couple episodes were so rushed. Almost felt like Game of Thrones Season 8 all over again cause I loved this show.

That's exactly what it felt like. Season 2 was one of the best seasons of a show I've ever seen. It humanized Smith so well and actually made the audience feel empathy for a fucking Nazi. Season 3, while not as good, was still incredibly well done and fascinating. Season 4 sucked ass and ruined everything they had built up to, probably because Amazon said they were done financing the show and told the team to just finish it up. Terrible waste of potential.
I cant undestand this hate. I watched the whole show just a month ago, so I didnt get a massage about that rushy cancelation of the show. And I was completely ok with it. Later I realized that ending of episode 9 was probably supposed to end a fourth season, but John Smith suicide make sence to me.

But the problem I had was mainly with the abrupt, ambiguous "people from everywhere coming through the portal" as the portal opening from the other side was not shown until the last episode, and Julianna's visions were not articulated that much. Were these people from the dimension where the Allies win? Was this dimension afterlife, as we saw Tagomi ealier? Initially, I thought that maybe the twist is that the resistance somehow used the portal to contact the superpowers from our dimension and bring them here to end the reich this time. But the people walking out of the Nebenswelt were defenseless civilians, so that is not the case either.

BCR was probably the only sensible faction to lead the resistance - because in both North American Reich and JPS, white people were not really in that much of a trouble. They were, especially on the German side, quite content with high standard of living (not to mention that the entire mid-west is of German ancestry). That leaves the black population as the most persecuted one - it makes every sense that they would lose the most and that they, before anyone else, would be willing to take up arms. The writers actually took that part from Europe - in Europe, if you were of certain origin/nationality, Germans would leave you alone. Otherwise, it was either shooting or gas chamber. That is why there was no massive armed resistance in the Western Europe (Germans were not exterminating anyone there except Jews when they found them) but in the Eastern Europe you had huge Resistance armies (sometimes numbering hundreds of thousands!) that were fighting the Germans behind the enemy lines - because Germans WERE exterminating THEM!
So, a Frenchman didn't do anything. Maybe gathering intelligence, at most. On the other hand, a Slav was fighting for his survival. The same thing is carried over to America. Those not getting actively exterminated are NOT really eager to rise up. On the other hand, blacks - it is either rise up or extermination. So their plot line was actually very good and thought out.
Next, AMERICAN Luftwaffe not bombing Pacific States after Smith's death is not utter nonsense, it is also realistic. If you have not notices, the general in command of the American army was NOT really keen on obliterating the other part of the country. Smith was a political leader but the person in command of the army didn't really want a war. So, when he received the news that Smith died, he called off the attack. Turning an entire nation into glass by nuclear hellfire is NOT what any sane military commander would do, THAT would be an utter nonsense. What happened in the series was anything but that.
John Smith was not the villain in traditional sense. You missed the point COMPLETELY. First of all, you watched the series as a fun alternative history series. It was NOT that and Rufus Sewell (John Smith actor) talked about in interview in Season 1! The ENTIRE Man in the High Castle series point was how ordinary people can easily be swayed either way and their potential is only limited by certain events. It was not at all a talk about Nazis and alternative universes, they were just there as a TOOL to tell the ACTUAL story!
John Smith (they used a generic name on purpose!) was a character that is NOT in the books and is written into the show SPECIFICALLY for the things that I am talking about. He is a generic American who, at one point, to keep his family from starving, decided to swallow his pride a bit. That led him up the ladder a bit, where he encountered different problems. In order to keep his family safe, as any family man would do, he tried to overcome those problems - and that saw him rise even more.
Step by step, he went from a simple, good man, to a monster, without ever realizing it. He does not believe in any Nazi crap about racial superiority, he does not like what he does - you see it throughout the series. And the point comes at the end when he talks with Helen, when she tells him to stop it all, at which point he replies "But I don't know how...".
And that is the tragedy of John Smith. He is not indoctrinated, he is not brainwashed, he is not evil incarnate or stupid - he just went into something to save his family and provide for it, but he remained in it for too long that he lost himself and he does not know how to stop, how to live outside of it. The system molded him.
And that is why, for it all to end, he killed himself. Because he lost himself, he lost his family, and with it he lost the ONLY THING that kept him from going completely mad and bloodthirsty. He DID NOT WANT to become that monster, but he did not know how to prevent it from happening. That is why he shot himself.
He is not a one dimensional evil character, he is a tragic character. The show NEVER tried to portray him as evil, NEVER! You saying that they did just confirms that you had no idea what you were watching. Everything that various rightwingers and Neonazis found "cool" and "interesting" in the show were there just as a makeup. The real story of the Man in the High Castle was about human nature, not alternative worlds, Germans winning the war or some other shit. You watched THAT, because you missed the entire point of the damn series, which is sad.
Rockwell kinda knows his time is up when hoover says: "I'm sorry Reichsmarshall"
In our universe Rockwell always had the papers to prove it.
May Rockwell rest in peace. He tried to save America, but failed like many others.

All I have to say the only story arc that I was perfectly okay with was John Smith's. He was a tragic villain and it was worth watching the whole show just for him. The ending wasn't the best but I always felt like John was going to go out on his own terms.

Spot on. I too only watched because his character was so damn interesting. Rufus Sewell's portrayal of John Smith was outstanding. He portrayed his character with such nuance and subtlety. Proof a great actor doesn't need to be over the top or bombastic to play a character. He should've won an Emmy for his work. Without him the show is garbage IMO.
I feel the opposite. I’m okay with Frink’s and Kido, because they’re the only characters who seem to fully feel the weight and repercussions of their actions at every turn. Smith’s arc was like an airplane taking a sudden nosedive to the near mountain peak because it ran out of fuel. There was so much more to tell with him. And Julianna disgusts. I don’t think I have ever resented a protagonists more. She gets away with all manner of moral hypocrisy and still comes out on top.
There’s no clip here but i liked how Smith sent assassins to Cuba to eliminate Rockwell as he was trying to enjoy a secret tryst.

@@MakisHMMY If anything, it'd be labeled "National Socialist Union" as it's internationally covering non-Germanic lands as an ideological movement, as well as 'Reich' is only in terms of the German state, and Greater extends to culturally or historically German speaking states. The Greater German Reich would be separate from the supposed movement union, while at the very least puppet states to it. Similar to what the Soviet Union had at least.

They should do a show similar to this again, but with a focus on the nazis. It should show the inefficiencies of a nazi power structure, and should show exactly how it would collapse. Would be more interesting than what they did in this show I think.
I would love to see a show where the Third Reich survives into the 21st century, and is slowly destroyed from the inside like that happened to the Soviet Union.

Fascism as an ideology effectively fetishised violence, so it's not too much of a leap to expect significant violence to play a role in fascist politics (even in peacetime).

He was my favorite character on the show. A tragic villain if there ever was one. I was rooting for him too. I wanted redemption for his character and ultimately thought that was where his character was headed. The writers sadly had other plans. The writing was garbage in season 4 and felt rushed.

I found more interesting the character of John Smith compared to Juliana, the guy always surprised me with every decision he made and how he turned over the table. Juliana was so predictable and somehow boring to see, but the conspiracies of the Nazi empire were the ones that made me watch it till the end lol
I love the discipline of the honor guards at the door, they don’t even blink at having their national leader frog marched out the door.

This show had the potential to be the equivalent of House of Cards in the Nazi timeline. The dialogues are honestly the best part. Too bad they messed it all up at the end of season 4

Honestly, the best part of the show was all the political intrigue, subterfuge, plotting, and blatant backstabbing. The whole show could've just been that.
Rotten internal confrontation and blackmail with the lives of loved ones as a regular practice and the final massacre of the high command just killed me by the end of the series

The basic fallacy about this series is that it's based on a false
premise: that the Nazis and Japanese desired and had the means to
conquer the world. The Nazis did not think in Geo-political terms but
Eurocentrically. Hitler thought in World War One terms, seeing the
conquest of France and Russia as his ultimate war aims. The Nazis had no
workable plan for even invading England and put no real energy into it.
Nor did they have a navy capable of crossing the Atlantic against an
America with three times their industrial plant. Hitler feared America.
Similarly the Japanese limited their war aims to co-opting southeast
Asia and China into their Greater Asian Co-Prosperity Sphere. They had
no wish to go after America and could not support a cross-Pacific
invasion of America with their minuscule industrial plant, barely 10% of
America's. World conquest by the Nazis and Japan was simply not
possible given the political-economy of their nations. But it's a nice
and entertaining fantasy, which is what Hollywood is all about.
IIRC in this timeline something happens to Allied leadership, like Churchill and FDR die and USA never really gets out of the depression, so they don't become the arsenal of democracy. Germany wins on their fronts and gets nukes first, and Americans are too demoralized to continue the war after DC is nuked.
Still, like you said, I dont know how the whole country becomes under military occupation, but being around 15 years after the end of the war I suppose they could be strong armed into becoming like a Dominion state.

They did the alternate reality alright. It was interesting to see Collaborator John Smith see how things could have been. The real shit stain in this show is the rebel scenes.

After listening to Himmler's German lines many times, I tried to transcribe them and then ran the transcription through Google Translate. And it seems to turn out what he's saying doesn't match the English subtitles exactly. Only the second and last two lines seem to be accurate.
3:22 "Flund sie en ab." According to Google Translate, this supposedly means "Fluff them up." rather than "Get him out of here." ("Bring ihn hier raus.")
3:24 "Verschwinden sie!" "Verschwinden" translates as "disappear", but Google says this phrase does mean "Go away!"
3:26 "Aufmachen aun." This actually means "Open up", which is a far cry from "Out of my sight." ("Aus meiner Sicht.")
3:27 "Aus diesem Land." and "Sofort!" These last two lines are the only ones that are 100% accurate to their corresponding subtitles.
I'm not a native German speaker, but I think I've transcribed these lines as accurately as possible, at least by Google's standards. If there's anyone out there who actually speaks German, any corrections would be appreciated.

Nit pick as far as attention to detail: you see clearly thar Rockwell has Reichsmarschall insignia on his collars. This was obvious because he has a Luftwaffe uniform, the same branch as Hermann Goring, the only real-life Reichsmarschall. I wonder why they never created insignia for John Smith's uniform when he was promoted to the rank. It looks odd that he is the Reichsmarschall, a 6-star rank, yet he wears the insignia of an Oberstgruppenfuhrer, a 4-star rank. My guess is it was overlooked by production.

I'm a TOTAL newbie - this is only the second video I've ever seen of this and I've watched none of the show and read none of the book. BUT. Why is a Luftwaffe officer acting like an internal security investigator interrogating an SS man?
IrishCarney He actually was the Ruler of the North America Reich under Fuher Himmler. Rockwell was attempting to crush someone he saw as a political rival and/or threat to him. He had J Edgar Hoover investigate and then brought the case directly to the Fuher himself. Only to have the whole thing backfire when Hoover double crossed him (Smith has blackmailed him into doing so ahead of time).
Rockwell was also US Navy during WW2.
