He could have even gone to the Japanese states, or south America. 3) He could have just said no. Sure he risks being unable to feed his family, but it's not a sure thing at that point. At the very least he could have, you know, not joined the SS voluntarily and orchestrated the western extermination camps.

Imagine being in that situation. You lost the war, abandoned every ideal that made you not only American but a decent human being, and made peace with it. And not only that, but this alternative world isn't safe. It may be physically real, but its still just an illusion. Nazi agents had already infiltrated this world, so no matter what, he can't just break from his dark past and try to restart in a world where things hadn't gone wrong.

The writers wrote themselves into a corner. They wrote some incredible scenes in the ALT world to give John the chance to see he was capable of being a different man. John Smith always rationalized his actions by telling himself he did what he had to. I don't see John being evil by nature but by circumstance. To be clear, he WAS evil. But his evil came from his adapting to powers beyond his control and the ALT world scenes showed John under other circumstances he would not have followed that evil path. Logically once John became head of the North American Reich and was master of his own destiny he could have been true to his own better instincts and perhaps, gradually, undone the worst evils in the Reich. But the writers NEEDED to punish Smith because he was a Nazi. So they write a plot where Smith inexplicably decides to revive the Reichs mass extermination programs. They offer only the barest explanations for it because it just makes so little sense when taken with everything John had experienced and seen up to this point. But their motivation was "we can't let the Nazi just live another 20 years as fuehrer and imply gradual change" they needed to tie a moral bow around the series and that meant showing him as a true monster incapable of the change they had implied over multiple seasons and a quick comeuppence where he loses everything followed by a suicide. Then his second in command just randomly calls of the invasion. Yeah they flubbed the ball here.

I think it shows that despite his still somewhat good qualities, he could not be redeemed. He has had hundreds killed or tortured, and he even let his close friend and brother die without doing a damn thing about it. He, in my view, was far too gone to help himself out of the darkness he had willingly sunk himself into, he even had his ALT self murdered by accident. At this point, he was just too far gone to save himself. When you’ve been surrounded by death, misery and extreme ideology for decades and you’ve participated in that ideology for a long time, it’s damn near impossible to leave it all behind, either because of you, or because of others affected by you.

    • @davidbuckley2435
      @davidbuckley2435 11 місяців тому

@@acrazysheepdog1555 Yep, the thing that so many people in the fandom are missing is just how scared John Smith is of a world without Nazism. Because that's a world where he has to face the consequences for what he has done.
Imagine you're in Smith's shoes, or the shoes of any other participant in a genocide, and one day you are given 100% irrefutable proof that God exists and that heaven and hell are real. You now know that when you die, you are definitely going to hell, and there is no amount of good that you can do in life that can make up for the blood on your hands.
That's the same thing that confronted so many Nazis during WW2 once defeat became clearly inevitable. They knew that their chances of escaping justice for their crimes would be close to impossible. And so many of them doubled down, tried vainly to destroy the evidence even though the scale of the Holocaust made it impossible, and when they couldn't even do that, many Nazis killed themselves rather than face the music.
That's the dilemma facing John Smith by the end. Sure, he has the power to change the country. But once he restores democracy and the American way of life, there would be calls for the chief Nazis at least to face some sort of justice.
But worse than that (from John's perspective), it would mean that he participated in a regime that killed millions of people, including his own son, for no reason. He would have to face up to the fact that he could have fought the Nazis from the jump, and never surrendered. That's a level of introspection that very few people could face and survive, and John isn't exceptional, he's an everyman (hence his name being synonymous with "a generic human").

I commend Rufus for playing John as humanly as possible. The writers of season 4 wanted to portray John as purely a bad guy, but Rufus fought to show the grey area. In these scene and the ones following, all the way until the end, you see John wrestle with his decision. He's dying inside, seeing the plans for Phase 5. He's dying inside when he orders the Luftwaffe to attack the west coast. He doesn't want to do it, but he's been playing this role for so long, he can't see his other options, if there are any. I wish he'd have been able to throw off German rule, but still have to face justice for all the crimes he committed. Maybe he's too...cowardly for that, but it would have been a better end for his character. I think because people were so freaked out about Trump being "literally Hitler, oh my god!" the writers shied away from making John sympathetic. They got too real-world political at the end of the series.

Ok maybe his devotion to the Nazi cause but he does keep a US medal from WWII in his office and he does speak of his life in Cincinnati with regrets.
He could've just snap double-Helen's neck, dump her body somewhere (he'dd probably be capable of doing such thing) and bring his own Helen in this universe. The basic fallacy about this series is that it's based on a false
premise: that the Nazis and Japanese desired and had the means to
conquer the world. The Nazis did not think in Geo-political terms but
Eurocentrically. Hitler thought in World War One terms, seeing the
conquest of France and Russia as his ultimate war aims. The Nazis had no
workable plan for even invading England and put no real energy into it.
Nor did they have a navy capable of crossing the Atlantic against an
America with three times their industrial plant. Hitler feared America.
Similarly the Japanese limited their war aims to co-opting southeast
Asia and China into their Greater Asian Co-Prosperity Sphere. They had
no wish to go after America and could not support a cross-Pacific
invasion of America with their minuscule industrial plant, barely 10% of
America's. World conquest by the Nazis and Japan was simply not
possible given the political-economy of their nations. But it's a nice
and entertaining fantasy, which is what Hollywood is all about.

You'd think that after John Smith sees his best friend who he betrayed in the other universe, he'd have a change of heart when he becomes reichsfuhrer, but no the writers thought its a brilliant idea to make him extra evil... The ending of the show made 0 sense with the NPCs marching out of the portal.
