- Using Bias Amp 2 and Bias FX, I show how to accurately get the guitar sound from James Hetfield and Kirk Hammett (Metallica) on the "Ride the Lightning" album.
IMPORTANT 2023 UPDATE - Some users have reported they can't find my presets when searching Bias FX 2. This seems to be a glitch in their search system. To solve the issue, type in the search field "DMO -" (yes, just DMO followed by a space and hyphen) and choose "Sort by Popularity" in the drop-down beside the search field. You should see all of my presets.
Please note many users have taken my presets and created their own versions with similar names. To make sure you are downloading my original presets, my user name in Bias FX 2 is "Dan Oliv". Also, my original presets have a lot more downloads than the non-original versions.

Bias FX 2 UPDATE - My preset featured on this video was created with the first version of Bias FX. With the release of Bias FX 2, I uploaded a new version of my preset to the tone cloud (each version of the software has its own separate tone cloud). My FX 2 preset is the same as the original version except it has a dual path for live playing (featuring a slight delay for a richer stereo sound). If you want the recording version of my preset like my video, disable the dual path and tweak any applicable settings shown on my video.
Here's the list of the gear I'm using:
. Bias Amp 2 and Bias FX guitar modeling software - metal distortion (Screamer pedal) and Mesa Boogie Mark IIc+ amp simulation
. Line 6 UX-1 audio interface
. Reaper Digital Audio Workstation
. iMac with Yosemite OS
. B.C. Rich NJ Deluxe JR. V guitar with original Floyd Rose tremolo and active EMG pickups
My guitar medley features these songs: "Fade to Black", "Trapped Under Ice" and the title track.

that 1 percent is maybe just original studio equipment and recording technique on tape, that is hard to replicate and not neccesary
Also note it's without the bass in the mix.
A little more reverb and it’s 100%
that 1% could be the emg pickups because if i recall correctly they were still using passive pickups until MOP
IMO RTL has the heaviest guitar tone at its time (1984) it's also hard to find any band that heavy (tone) in that time
Maybe, but I prefer crunchier sounds like Reign in blood. I also love South of heaven's tone

there was little bass in the actual album version
once a bass is recorded with a similar tone to cliffs it will sound pretty much spot on
The low end is a tough one. If you add too much bass, the sound starts becoming muffled instead of heavy.

because of modern tools this actually sounds better than the original album sound

Man was this close. This shows all the hard work you put on. I am in the process of buying bias FX 2 and bias amp as well although I am really confused cause I have amplitude 4 in the mix as well. Any suggestions on Bias or Amplitude??

I’m trying to replicate the tone on an actual Marshall amp, using a built in compressor. Would an eq pedal set to the eq settings on bias help as well?

Even though I want a Dean ZX with a Floyd Rose I can't find a set of EMG 81 85 pickups that has one volume and one tone the only set I found is the Zakk Wylde set and that has 2 volumes and 2 tones.

Yes, you need Bias FX 2. The tone cloud of FX 2 won't show FX 1 presets.

I keep getting a latency when using bias fx 2 and my scarlett interface?? Can someone help me please
Bias FX 2 usually adds about 30ms latency because it's poorly optimized. You should only really use it for recordings, and even then you really need to decrease your DAW's block size and set it to ASIO. For live performing, just stick with an amp and pedals.
Should I also get bias amp too or should I just stick with bias fx 2 (elite)? I’m just curious if I could get the same tone without having to buy bias amp
Justice is a must and I know your working on it but what I think would be a challenge is hardwired. But prove me wrong brother. Have you ever tried the Metallica impulse responses by any chance?
Master was the most difficult one to get. I haven't tried the impulse responses... Bias Amp already does such a nice job!
dmometalguitar it is man you did good tho! And I was just asking cuz I’ve been using the impulse responses with fortin nameless suite and these tones feel better than Bias.

Correct. Bias Amp 2 and Bias FX are integrated with each other.

Thanks. I think it's probably because I didn't put as much reverb as the album, so it has more of a "in-your-face" feel.

That's weird. Usually what Positive Grid does is to show all presets (all versions), but if you don't have the latest version, you'll get a message saying it can't be downloaded. But maybe they changed things now with FX 2. I'll take a look and post an update if needed. I created the preset with Bias Amp 2 and Bias FX (version 1). In the meantime, ask Positive Grid about it. It may be a bug (there are several bugs with FX 2 based on their forum). They're very good with customer support.
yeah its probably just a bug i tried to search for the master of puppets one but i didnt show up either.
If you get a reply from their customer service, let me know what the say. That's a gigantic bug! That's why I always keep the original installation files of different software products. Updates, a lot of times, end up being downgrades.@@simonengstrom2476

Please also note that some presets on ToneCloud are exclusive for BIAS FX Pro or Elite license, that means you will need to upgrade to get it work.
