UA-camrs… Although there are certainly a lot of them to choose from, many would at least say the largest creators on the platform are comparable to the everyday Hollywood celebrity.
This seems increasingly accurate as the platform continues to manifest and evolve larger and larger channels, headed by figures who have become identifiable to even those without a passing interest in the video-hosting website. UA-cam isn’t like mainstream media though, many figureheads are not handpicked, and many have much more centralised control of their content and their vision than certain personages who may be subject to studios and investors. For many, this is what makes UA-cam such a good platform to launch one’s career, as success is almost exclusively decided by the audience who watch it. However, on the other hand, UA-cam is still a very small tranche of media as a whole, and many who achieve the treasured status of mega-influencer often begin to look beyond the realms of the platform to further their career. In many ways this should be a recipe for success, the personal relationship that many creators produce with their channel often gives them a fanbase much more dedicated than that of the average celebutante. They’ve already crafted a multimillion subscriber channel from a very limited set of resources, imagine what they could do with the sort of financial backing that many of these large corporations can provide. Think of all the wondrous creations that could be brought into being…
It’s strange really, because in spite of the numerous attempts to bring popular UA-camrs into the mainstream sphere, a proportionally low number have actually succeeded. There are a few large musicians and comedians who had their start on the video sharing platform, which makes sense in a way as they’re also occupations which can command an exceptionally dedicated fanbase, but besides this many creators trying to spread their wings have been met with limited prosperity outside of their comfort zone. Why is this often the case?

*Reupload* Unfortunately due to a copyright dispute with NBCUniversal and some YT system bs (that I'm now wiser to), which started with a worldwide block, I've decided to reupload this one. Really sorry to do this to anyone who has notifications on, and for causing any confusion. Not sure why the copyright claim didn't appear before I uploaded as it wasn't a manual one, but that's UA-cam for you.

I'm really glad that instead of touching kids or scamming people she was just not that entertaining. A breath of fresh air in the current youtube ecosystem

IKR 😅
I don’t remember her being racist
The bar is on the floor lol
You know what. At least Lilly didn’t commit the usual UA-cam creator scandal of being creepy (or worse) towards children. Gotta hand it to her, it’s a lot better to go out on the basis of your talent not transferring well to another medium than on the basis of being a horrible person.
All aboard
The bar is set far too low.

@@alphakakcmeddlakadoofahkii3362 you can say that about literally anyone lol
@@samatar6852 Yup, but being a thing in Hollywood raises the likelihood of it
I honestly think Lily could have been an actress in a sitcom (either for younger audiences like That's So Raven or older audiences like Friends) because she had a lot of personality, decent comedic timing, and spunk. The videos where she played characters showed she could do physical acting and theatrical comedic acting. I honestly think staring or co-staring in a sitcom would have suited her more than a talk show.
she’s in muppets mayhem on disney+ which is a sitcom of sorts and is actually pretty great in it i actually really enjoyed watching her performance in it maybe that’s just because the show is well written but i actually really liked her in that show and i hope she does more similar stuff because it clearly suits her much better than what she was doing before
I’m guessing, since this is being reuploaded, Lilly Singh probably didn’t like being criticized and attempted to abuse the copyright system.
yeah, i was wondering why i got it in my front page as uploaded 12 minutes ago when i watched it last week...
@@RitzMalheurshe didn't even have a successful talk show that must not be named
If so, then that's some really thin skin (or she didn't actually watch it) because TRO's being really sympathetic towards her.

as someone who's also a femme of color, i understand that lily's identity is very significant but it doesn't help any community when her identity becomes her whole personality
This!!!!
Same with LGBTQ and shit, but there you can't even call it out without being called all kinds of slurs..
It says a lot when despite watching a fair bit of highlights of her show I couldn't tell you a thing about her that wasn't based around her race/sexual identity. I want to see entertainers as people, not a checklist of physical traits.
this is the perfect take
there’s absolutely nothing wrong with being yourself and having your identity. but when you make something like your race, gender, sexuality etc the entirety of your personality it’s entirely deserved to criticize it.
this is the easiest take to have, and only obtains this amount of likes because it is incredible easy for cis/straight/white people to take a hold of because people being loud about who they are makes them uncomfortable. It is truly saddening how being proud is still something many people, even of their own kind find frightening.
the basis of your entire comment is something that takes up maybe five minutes of this video too, and yet it is all you found the need to comment on, genuinely bewildering
Yes, I've always felt that she ended up centering whiteness in her show rather than celebrating her own heritage. Talking about how not white and not male you are is centering whiteness and maleness in the conversation.
Right. That's because she opted to abandon her own heritage.
How have you mentally ill leftists turned anti white rhetoric into somehow here centering whiteness? she was centering her own identity through hate, she just failed.

I think part of Lily's problem was leaning so hard on her identity for her humor -- it's not that it can't be funny, or even that she was never funny doing it, but her delivery didn't so much invite you to laugh with her as much as it challenged you to laugh with her, and late night viewers don't want to be challenged. I know at 1am I'm usually not in the mood to check my privilege.
Goog point
I was subscribed to her a long time ago. Then she went mainstream and basically ignored her UA-cam channel. Which was a very bad move, given that almost none of her core audience watched TV. I pretty much just forgot she existed really.
Yup
@@whatismyname5206 It wouldn't have been so bad if her talk show was published on UA-cam. Like other late night talk shows. But if I remember correctly, it wasn't. Reposting my comment from the original:
As a Punjabi-Canadian who grew up with her content but outgrew the humour, I've been following commentary/critique videos made about her talk show. This is, by far, the most comprehensive and thoughtful video on the matter. Everyone I've seen criticizing the show were non-Indians who only saw it as cringe UA-camr humour (which is true, to a degree, but there is more to talk about here). This TRO video took into account absolutely everything - the intended audience, the fact that those critiquing the talk show were not the intended audience but the humour in the show became repetitive and fell flat for the intended audience regardless, that the way the show came across made it seem as though it was intended for a white guilt audience. The other videos I've seen critiquing her show were really just calling the humour cringe and repetitive, which doesn't actually touch on or critique anything. Of course the humour is cringe. Lilly's humour is cringe. Her fanbase engages with it and she's a millennial. That's what's going to be in her show. But, at least at the beginning, it did also seem as though it was a team of writers that knew nothing about her other than her identity on the surface level. It seems like when she had the reigns, she did more interesting things than the writers knew to do.
This this this!!! No notes, I agree with it all.
Thoughtful comments, as a millennial I laughed at “of course she’s cringe… she’s a millennial” lmao
@@deadmanj9279 Haha! Great to hear! I was a bit worried about that part because I know the whole generational beef thing is crazy right now - but I said it as someone who was fully invested in the 2014-2016 era of her comedy, right at the peak of it!

I remember watching that first episode. She started off with her 'joke' about white people not being used to seeing someone of color on their television as if it was the 1950s. How old did she think her audience was? 80? 90?
Gone With The Wind: exists
@@robertbeisert3315 And racist
Yeah, after the Obama presidency!
@thedualtransition6070 People love bringing up the Obama presidency as some sort of post racial reckoning but, as you can see from the George Floyd tragedy, the US is not past race and Obama presidency did nothing to change that 🤷🏽♀️
@@athenawolf4467well yes, emphasizing racial differences is a very useful tool for the establishment (both sides) to keep us divided. Being able to look past skin color and see one another as united in our humanity (as it used to be up until the Occupy movement, far more than now) was dangerous to those in power. We outnumber them vastly, so they keep us distracted and fighting amongst ourselves with these hyped up culture wars
I don't know Lilly's content but from what I could tell she was already successful before her talk show. I don't look down on her for wanting more, but I feel like sometimes youtubers don't count their success on YT as a "real" success. Which makes me kinda sad. It's hard to find success on YT, I'd say any success is on YT is phenomenal.
I got the impression that it was a goal of hers rather than "wanting more" specifically. But I'm not going off of much here
@annaairahala9462 genuine question: what's the difference between wanting more and that being a goal? (I am genuinely asking sorry if this comes off aggressive)
@@kingintern7566 I was thinking a goal is something I'd say someone is working towards and is somewhere on the path of getting to, whereas "wanting more" makes it sound like they are going for it solely because it's something "more" or based off of what they've achieved so far. But now that I think about it I don't know if I'd even agree with myself or if it's valid to even separate them like this lol
@@annaairahala9462I think you're right, she's not necessarily greedy, but mostly it was during the period of time when youtubers would want to eventually move towards something more stable and break into the TV/movie audience as compared to the conventional route of starting as a child in a network like disney channel or something.
@@kingintern7566
In the 16 years I've been on UA-cam it's never been seen as "real success." I guess it's because everyone assumes that all UA-camrs are v-loggers which aren't that hard to make. They forget the aspiring film makers, documentarians, game developers, and animators. But that's easy to overlook since the prominent UA-cam content are v-loggers.
The copyright strike sucks big time, loved the video. Keep up the great work!
I had this one in my watch later list, and here it is again.
Favoritism clearly knows its path to those who are loyal.
She had so much potential. I see how influential and funny Dutch, female comedians are. She could have been that too. Just not as a talkshow host. I never saw Lilly as a talkshow host at all. And not for an 'adult' audience.
Dutch female comedians, you mean brigitte kaandorp and Claudia de Breij? ( i love her oudejaarsconference) but yeah i dont really see them doing talkshows

Like honestly, at first I was like “oh cool! And influencer who’s like me and I can relate to her stories!” But after the second or third time of her ‘opening up’ about being an lgbtq+ person of colour I was kind of fed up with her
I am seriously considering introducing myself as a "heterosexual man of whiteness" every opportunity I get from now on

@@MasteRgamer-mk5bp I wasn't insinuating that, I'd genuinely be interested to know. The disingenuous nature of it makes me think it could be different to what you thought
As an old fan of Lilly, I can look back at her old stuff fondly, but idk, right around the time I stopped watching her, it just started to feel fake to me. What really made me quit was during one of her 12 days of Christmas series where she had posted a separate video about taking care of her mental health (which she had done often and I fully support) what I don’t support though was the next video in her series was an ad to buy her merch. Idk, it didn’t sit right with me. I know that these were scheduled, but it feels disingenuous for her to do that, like, at least push it back a video, that wouldn't have been so bad. But anyway, sorry for rambling, I just feel that somewhere, someway fame ruined her sense of humour and genuine care for people and even herself
I agree. I stopped watching her around the time she started doing a bunch of celebrity collaborations, which is fine- but I noticed her videos weren’t silly/funny/relatable like they used to be. It seemed like she was just trying to align herself with A listers to reach their level. I even used to watch her vlogs sometimes, and I got super creeped out when she showed a video of herself making out with someone to her parents to shock them. All that rubbed me the wrong way and I just lost interest in her.
@kristina1097 I'm glad I'm not the only one who saw stuff like that and her vlogs were another thing that made me question a lot too, yeah, it's just weird thinking back on it now
More than fame it could be overbearing ambition. Humor tends to fade when someone is willing to put everything on the line in favour of advancement. Advancement that wasn't needed, I really doubt Youube wasn't paying her livelihood.
This is honestly the most good faith criticism of her I've seen. Not that there wasn't others in good faith, it's just that the ones I've seen weren't as kind as this one. I don't know why it was reuploaded, but whatever the reason was probably undeserved on the channel's part.
I've seen almost every commentary video on Lilly Sigh and this has been the most genuine, kind, and thoughtful yet. Thank you TRO.
she’s never been nor is my type of humour, but she genuinely seems like she puts in the work + hustle of it all. I reckon most of us could only wish that we could gain even just half of the notoriety and success that she achieved.
The fact that you went out of your way to comment such a kind and thoughtful opinion about her despite not even being in her target audience range is so sweet
@@pandawan4its not sweet, its called having base analysing skills

She wanted instant results, without the actual grind. She's a victim, please do not get it twisted.
I'm probably not her target audience either, because I'm a straight white woman old enough to be her mother. But I was really disappointed that her TV show didn't do better, because I think a lot of her UA-cam stuff has been pretty good, and she's clearly very smart and talented. I guess it was just the wrong time and the wrong format for her.
This is a pretty interesting case study of a UA-camr going to mainstream media (and then bounding back). Thanks for looking at this in such a straightforward manner!

The problem I see is that she took the show as a sign that she was better than her audience.
When her audience was bigger on YT than any on television since I was a kid.
Am I the only one who thought this whole time her channel's audience were children or desi uncles and aunties aka clearly not the demographic who watches late night U.S. talk shows? I don't know how no one from NBC or her team anticipated EXACTLY what happened. I checked out clips from her show and they weren't any cringier than the humor on her channel. The only difference is the difference, incompatible audience.
I wasn't a fan of her but i do remember stumbling accross a few of her videos and enjoying them. Shame it ended like this
I watched this in its first iteration, so I'm commenting to support this reupload: this was very insightful, thank you for always being fair to the people you discuss!
If she had even a modicum of humility (and for what it’s worth… humour), I feel like she could have actually been a little bit more successful 🤷🏻♂️
Like that whole joke when the guy was like “Do you think you’ll be okay doing this without an audience?”, and she just replies “Uhhh… yeah… I did start on UA-cam you know” or whatever she said, could have actually been a funny joke if she hadn’t done her cliche ‘I take offence to everything a white guy says’ schtick, and I know humility is kind of the wrong word for this example lol, but just jokingly had a little arrogance and been like ‘Well, I think I did alright on UA-cam, so I was MADE for this shi… oh yeah, you can’t swear on broadcast television can you… I mean I’M _GOOOOOD_ BABY!! 😎’ or ANYTHING along those lines, and she could at the very least have been just knocking on the door of actually being funny 🤷🏻♂️
Thanks for re-uploading this fantastic video.
Fantastic, fair, insightful, thorough, and thoughtful as always, TRO! You’re the best of the best, I truly mean it. If I had such a fair and thoughtful critique of my life this far, I’d honestly be grateful and feel really “seen”. It would be like the best way to figure out how to improve myself moving forward! You kept it very professional, and never once got close to mean spirited. Thank you for all the hard work you do!
I appreciate your approach of how settling into a late night show/any series might take a while, and at the end of the day she was still finding her stride. The digital age has expedited the pacr of consumption and judgement to an extent that the format associated with classic late-night high production no longer has time to find its niche. I feel that a lot of videos covering Lily's show were so immediately negative as she tread into uncertain waters. As much as people might meme about it, I can see where her stepping into this arena was a gargantuan task. At the end of the day she'd be asked to either present a disingenuous, politically neutral show host persona because everything coming out of her mouth as a bi woman of color is being scrutinized. There is a level of nuance associated with proper judgement of the show--she did want to stand her ground in her identity (as she should) rather than conform to a more "jimmy" type mold. It's a shame the circumstances didn't have more grace, but she seems to have taken it in stride and, as a casual viewer, I'm curious to see what happens next and wish her all the best.

Loved it then and loved it now how you point out her comedy of poking fun at white ppl kind of reinforces their learned helplessness of not knowing other cultures. Like she could’ve been actually sharing cool things from her culture but it was always “hehe white ppl” (also I’ve seen ppl execute those kinds of jokes much funnier than she could)
Yeah it very much only gives fuel to bigots and racists, fostering a kind of underlying hostility that sort of negative culture thrives on. There are plenty of ways to poke fun at white people being culturally insulated while also showing them the cool and relatable things other groups/cultures have to offer and are relatable.
As a white person, I feel like one of the barriers to real connection across races is the fear (for all people, not just whites) of being put on the chopping block for all to see, no one likes being embarrassed. When someone's identity is perceived as attacked, they will personally defend it, reinforcing prejudice, creating fear of even engaging with others and digging a wider gap than we already have. We need dialogue, not dissing (of course there will always be fragile white people who perceive any comment of whiteness as an insult, they need to fix their own problems first). There are plenty of great comedians, skits and jokes that make fun of white people which I think are funny, Race-based comedy isn't inherently bad if done well.

I was worried about this being overly negative, but instead it's a good assessment of the situation. Great video!
Lily was the first person I ever enjoyed watching on UA-cam, her “brown girl” sketches were the only ones I could relate to (not being from the us). I kept being her biggest fan up until around the time the first season came out. Amongst the internets reaction, her awful response to the response and then COVID, I fell off. This really made me want to revisit the absolute harmless cringe of it all and give season two of a little late a chance, it looks like something that I would actually enjoy (also I just want to get the bad taste season 1 left out of my mouth so I can just nostalgically remember superwoman in the future)

Only time I’ve ever found her palatable - and clearly a talent - is as the lead character in ‘The Muppets: Mayhem’ Disney+ show. When written and directed by someone else, her natural comedic timing and acting chops shine. Basically, Lilly needs to step back from beating a creator and instead be an actor guided by directors and writers who can tap into her talents.

You realise how talented those people truly are. Seeing someone trying to fake it til they make it shows just how accomplished successful performers are. I don't see it in Lily. And that has absolutely nothing to do with ethnicity or gender. She seemed to rely solely on hype, fanfare and an identity the world NEEDED in that moment. But the substance underneath lacked, sorely. As for legacy, longevity, impact, forget it. Utterly, utterly forgettable in the grand scheme of entertainment.
Glad this didn't end with her turning out to be an awful person. Best of luck to ya, Lilly.
I'm not even surprised, lots of support to u, king
First time hearing of her or her talk show. Really great & comprehensive video, per usual.
I'm a simple man, I see a TRO video, I watch it 👍🏼
That list of an older UA-cam rewind is a trip in itself. Now I have a need to look up one of the channels because they disappeared and I’m curious what happened.
I love your videos, glad your back.
It's been a while since I enjoyed a TRO video this much, pretty succint and kept to the points. A very interesting look at this comedian
I think one of the final points that UA-cam and Late Night could have a future is absolutely true! Recently, the Try Guys channel did an event where one of their members, Keith, hosted an episode of his very own Late Night show as a surprise gift. It was just the one, but Keith slipped into the role so naturally despite being totally unprepared. I found the episode to be a lot of fun and worth my time, even though I don't typically enjoy Late Night shows. There are plenty of people like Keith who could slip into those roles really well. The producers just need to really take a look at the current culture in a genuine way, or they need to add fresh young talents who know the age of the internet to their ranks. It's a shame Lily Singh's show didn't last, she really hit her stride, but I hope her time on air serves as an inspiration and a lesson to any future talk show hosts- the key to it is being authentic and playing to your strengths.
Bro, I got the notification and thought ''Oh, how coincidental, I JUST watched a yt docu on Lilly! Well, might as well watch this one too!''
It took me 30 full minutes to realise that this felt a little too similar... smfh
Anyway, great vid!
Out of subject, but holy crap is Lanbob a very good editor. I love you man❤
oh, a reupload? excellent time for me to watch the whole thing again :D
Didn’t watch this the first time as lily singh hasn’t been relevant since I was like 14 but seeing you had to reupload means it’s time to hand over my view 🤚
On UA-cam, she had billions of native Indians potentially following her routine.
On primetime... Or 1:30am time slot, she had only the American audiences supporting her.
What's a population of 3 billion to 300 million?
Watching it again ! Because you’re the best!
Love this video, even the second time! 🥰
Yeah, I’ll rewatch this in its entirety idc
im gonna have to pretend i haven't seen this
Great video all the way through!
sorry OG was taken down!!! commenting to boost. thanks for the vid!!!
Lost potential? To lose something it has to exist first
I've never heard of Lilly Singh until around COVID/2020. I don't really like her style of comedy, as evident from this video and TRO's explanation, but at least she tried going big. I don't think it's an easy transition going from YT to general, wider media or different careers. Hope she gets better projects. And plus, as some other users pointed out, she's never committed or alleged to an actual crime. No grooming, sexual assault, or grifting. Just tried and failed a different career.
Commenting for the algorithm!!! Love your work!! ♥️♥️
Great video!
I’m such a huge fan of your work this are Netflix quality deep dives. Top tier 🎉
That's kinda insulting. This is far better researched than the stuff on Netflix.
Way better than netflix imo
For some set-up:
As it applies to the culture of the United States the only thing about me as an individual that isn't exploited and marginalized is that I am white. Even then I come primarily from the "lower tiers" of white ethnicity (Irish and Italian on one side, Scottish on the other). I am a trans woman, I come from abject poverty, I suffer mental illness and a learning disability, and I am not heterosexual either. I have largely always leaned left politically and am not religious despite growing up in a highly religious and right wing area.
The trouble with Lilly is that even to people like me her delivery did not come off as enlightened nor edifying for the viewer, it simply came off as condescending and hateful towards white people. It still does on revisit, truthfully. People such as myself should have been won over by her not spurned. It stuck, as you say, with those of us to whom it was her first impression made.
Watching the whole video again !!
Gonna watch this again!!
Lilly's biggest issue is that she was a one trick pony. Hearing she was a POC and a lesbian was a meme for like a year and a half then became pointless arguing with her critics. There was no substance or value with her compared to other late night comics and hosts.
Binged it when it first came out.. I see it again in my feed - that it was posted SIX HOURS ago.. *wondering if I’m having one of those butterfly effect moments or am trippin’ without any drugs* 😅
Still gunna watch the whole thing again 💁🏼♀️
I love you're thoughts and takes on youtubers i dont always agree but it only makes me more of a fan ❤
That Fallout section is some of the best editing I've seen. It goes so hard
