Wow, to hear such an accomplished guitarist speak with the respect and reverence that Mike does for George is very special. The emotion that he feels for George’s guitar solo is now probably further amplified by the loss of Tom Petty. Having all of those legendary musicians in the Travelling Wilburys was like catching lightning in a bottle.
That was a well-spent 5 minutes with Mike. Love how he would be intimidated, as we all would, by George, but also how Mike coaxed George into developing the slide solo himself.
Beautifully honest. That's what makes the heartbreakers so compelling. They are like regular guys that you could sit down with and have a burger/beer and not feel intimidated. Mike, your guitar sound is all your own. The American Girl riff will forever go down as one of the best and most memorable riffs of all time.
I love to hear a terrific player who is humble and not beating his own drum, so to speak. Good job, Mike. Your generosity resulted in beautiful slide play from George.
The first time i finally learned to play My Sweet Lord it actually made me cry. George was so spiritual and you can feel it when you play his music. Keep up the good work Mike. I love all you guys in the Heartbreakers and The Dirty Knobs are fantastic. Thank God for a break from all the crappy music out there nowdays. Love you guys and keep truckin.
How can you NOT like Mike Campbell..he’s simply one of kind!! I’ve learned so much from his playing..most important lesson was “Trust your own style, and build on it in a way to make it your own”!! Right on!!
Hi Mike, I'm glad you met George. To me, your description allows us all to meet him, taking us inside the soul of the man/musician. Now look at you Mike, also a hero to music lovers like me.
Mike is underappreciated by the masses. But that's due to how much the record industry has sunk in the past two decades. These documentary videos are very important for future generations who have never heard Tom Petty and his lead guitarist (Campbell) play live.
Interesting observation about George's slide playing being melodic instead of raw gutbucket blues slide. I love those sounds, too but George was always about the melody. You can hum most of what he plays on guitar. A true artist and songwriter that we dearly miss. He was a good soul and so are you Mike. As far as lead playing i think your work with the Heartbreakers is some of the best guitar playing on record, period! Love your playing and musical sensibility!
Listen to George’s solo on “Bluest Blues” by Alvin Lee. He plays the fist slide solo and it completely matches what you said. Might be my favorite Harrison solo.
Mike seems like a really nice guy -- in addition to being one of the best guitarists. I enjoy listening to what he has to say about songs and playing...and his experiences in the business. Great stuff.
I get it Mr. Campbell. Sometimes I get overwhelmed by how blessed I've been. I remember once I was in Kansas City with friends and here comes Mike Campbell walking through the building. I was slack jawed and thinking "Here's my chance!", right? But I couldn't think of what to say to a Rock and Roll god, so I just kept going, LOL. But we made eye contact!
What a kind soul you are Mike. Huge fan of you Tom, you and the band over the years. Just a genuinely nice guy. The world needs more Toms, George’s and Mikes.
Yes Mike ! me too .... every time I hear that solo ... It Hits Me .....The Same...... You played it ....Beautifully ! soo...Good You Both are in Your Own WaY
Buetiful souding strat n even great for slide n George as your inspiration .what not is George is cool as it gets for slide thanks Mike for aknoeledging.him.hebmade my hair stand up.om while my guitar gently weeps in largo I'n.the mid 70s with Ravi Shankar in the east coast with his bibed overalls it was a highlight in my life ñ never forgotten billy Cobham playing keys a great day in my life
I'm glad u kept going your ax collection incredible I was in Gainesville for his early days I'm sure u were their toosammy montez teaching him.chordd that evolke different emotions .his twin etc
Something saddens me when I watch such humble souls talk about their stories. In 10 Years, most of our great musicians will have passed on and my question is who will be left of this caliber to carry the can?
Thanks for this, Mike. I've heard you play Handle With Care in concert with grace and passion. You were able to bring George's spirit forth in your playing.
Thanks….it is a great story and that’s what it’s all about. The story grounds all this madness and frenzy and levels it all down to the hands, a guitar and an ear to hear it.
as an older "survivor" i empathize with Mike Campbell. it's hard to watch everyone and everything you've loved in life fade away. it's even harder if you've been as blessed as he has been.
Finished my Green Strat yesterday, Warmoth Body & Neck Rosewood fretboard and have Dimarzio Area 67 Bridge, area 58 Mid & Neck but choose to go CBS Big Headstock Neck, added a Fishman Piezo Power bridge in Translucent green over Swamp Ash, Gilmore 7 position wiring
Mike is a Fucken treasure! I liked his music ok, never obsessed, I’m a hard rock and true blues guy but this dude is such a bright spirit in the guitar world. Not a pretentious prick vibe is remotely possible with this guy.
I love Mike's observations on George's slide playing, Mike definitely took that into his own playing - just listen to the Learning To Fly solo. Absolutely soars like the title implies! I think The Edge and Daniel Lanois really brought that melodic slide playing further into the rock scene as well. I think it adds such a dynamic element for the right song. I'd be remiss to not mention Duane Allman's melodic slide masterpieces as well...
I couldn't agree more. Mike looked up to George and as they became friends, George kind of rubbed off on him. When T-Bone Burnett produced The Wallflowers album "Bringing Down the Horse," he sent an early mix of 6th Avenue Heartache to Mike and asked him to add a lead guitar track. Mike didn't know his home studio slide guitar recording made it into the final mix until he heard the song on the radio. Soon after, he said that George called him up and said "I heard you played on this... I didn't know you were doing me now!" 😄
Thats an absolutely wonderful Guitar🎸🎵👌 And the good thing is》 It's in hands of the right man like it should be.Maximum respect plus very interesting backround story. Best wishes and regards from germany✌🧙♂️✌☮
Wow. This is gonna sound funny: but I am falling in love with Mike Campbell ... He is so down-to-earth and soulful and real, like a brother from another mother, this guy. And that guitar part is so melodic and sweet ... what a great story, Mike. I know you are from Gainesville ... while you and Tom were being discovered, my older brother was building a 16-track MCI equipped studio in Tallahassee, around the end of 1973 ... Sweetbay Studios. Some great musicians and music passed through there, but nobody made it. Glad you and Tom did ...
Fortunate to see Tom, Mike, and thev guys in 2012 at Little Rock. As others have said, very underrated player. And the work he does for animals is excellent. Good man.
What a very humble guy. Great tribute.
Mike Campbell is a one of a kind.

You ain't kidding☆
Yes it will and he is ICONIC and very humble !!!
Well said..... ❤

this video is a treasure.
i sold him this guitar...it still chokes me up when i watch "concert for geroge" and i see it at royal albert hall
Do you know the color? Is it Charcoal Frost that has faded over time?

Crying... I get you totally. Just hearing his slide work on the songs he played gets me. 😭🙏🏼
This guys absolutely amazing. Every music fan should know who Mike Campbell is and his work. We’re blessed to have him here !
You mean there's somebody out there who doesn't know his great work?? LOL!!
Hi Mike, I'm glad you met George. To me, your description allows us all to meet him, taking us inside the soul of the man/musician. Now look at you Mike, also a hero to music lovers like me.
What a beautiful story from one of the greatest and most humble musicians ever. Thank you so much Mike!
What an incredibly humble man. Such a talented and interesting musician. Could listen to his anecdotes and stories for hours. 👍🎸🏴🇺🇸
Beautiful. Your sound touches my soul.
The most underrated guitarist playing the Strat's most underrated pickup position. Good to see some love for the ol' middle pickup.
Who thinks Mike Cambell is underrated? Nobody I know thinks that......
Underrated? Who comes up with this shit?
Mike is underappreciated by the masses. But that's due to how much the record industry has sunk in the past two decades. These documentary videos are very important for future generations who have never heard Tom Petty and his lead guitarist (Campbell) play live.
He not underrated
I think he was stoned and didn’t realize
Wow. That’s a great story. Thank you for sharing ❤️
Mike Campbell- national treasure

These are the stories I cherish the most, and just adds to my love for the song.
What a kind soul you are Mike.
Huge fan of you Tom, you and the band over the years.
Just a genuinely nice guy.
The world needs more Toms, George’s and Mikes.
Thank you for sharing this story with us. And, beautiful Strat!
Mike Campbell - his impeccable tones have travelled with me down the river since 1976 and American Girl. What a great artist.
What a humble nice guy and incredible story. Thank you for posting this just amazing and inspiring!
Yes Mike ! me too .... every time I hear that solo ... It Hits Me .....The Same...... You played it ....Beautifully ! soo...Good You Both are in Your Own WaY

How true
I always thought that solo brings goosebumps and tears to anyone with a heartbeat. Just like the Learnin to Fly solos.
BEAUTIFUL Soul Mike....Thanks
Now Mike needs to play Handle With Care with Jeff Lynne at a major concert in 2021.
Add Dhani Harrison into the mix too
Inspirational, you have these amazing musicians, inspiring other legendary musicians. Great story.
His slide playing is so damn smooth.
It’s incredible…best “touch” out of any guitarist
Nice compliment on a lost friend, a lot of people never get to meet and be friends with their heros. It's nice that he got that attachment
I didn't realize how much I liked Mike musically until I saw these videos!
Mike man, love your videos..Its like I'm right there with you..
Not only one of the best guitar players, but one of the best people in all of Rock n Roll history. Cheers, Mike Campbell.
These videos are a blast... thanks for sharing....
Beautiful! Beautiful story, beautiful people and song
Nice to hear that story..Georges slide guitar is soo very recognisable and lovely..
what a humble guy and great guitar player.
Thanks for this, Mike. I've heard you play Handle With Care in concert with grace and passion. You were able to bring George's spirit forth in your playing.
Appreciate you Mike, I miss all the heroes of old as well. You are one of the maestros Mike, stay blessed.
Thank you for sharing, Mike!
Thanks….it is a great story and that’s what it’s all about. The story grounds all this madness and frenzy and levels it all down to the hands, a guitar and an ear to hear it.
A humble down to earth person and a brilliant guitar player
Mike is one of my all-time favorites
Two super tasteful greats crossing paths. Genuinely humble yet other worldly.
Happy birthday Mike. Yesterday was 72. Same month and year as another favorite. PETER GABRIEL.
So special. Melodic slide. 💘
as an older "survivor" i empathize with Mike Campbell. it's hard to watch everyone and everything you've loved in life fade away. it's even harder if you've been as blessed as he has been.
Never heard him speak before....a class act.
Lovely story. This is what makes music such a great thing.

Great story, Great guitar
Darn. That story is emotional. Thx Mike
Mike is such a real, fantastic human being, so honest and emotional....one of God,s best creations!
Watching video’s of George’s friend and acquaintances talk about him, you can tell he was a solid guy.
This says everything - I was crying already when Mike said he nearly cried every time he played Handle with Care.
Wow Mike---thanks so much for sharing that story- just beautiful ....you got me welting up for sure ...LOL :-)
Thanks for sharing this..
Humility can go a LONG way to making something much bigger. sometimes knowing when to step aside is the biggest asset one can have.
Mike is a Fucken treasure! I liked his music ok, never obsessed, I’m a hard rock and true blues guy but this dude is such a bright spirit in the guitar world. Not a pretentious prick vibe is remotely possible with this guy.
I just wish I could play like that. LOL!!! But yeah...very unpretentious. Seems very cool.
What a story ... thank you
Sweat sounding strat and cool color.📀📀
My God he's really amazing...what a sweet soul of a man.
One of the coolest things I've heard. Yes sir
George was a fantastic slide player , my favourite. Mike Campbell is a hero of mine , not just because of his guitar playing , beautiful guy all round
It's amazing how he sounds like Tom. My regret was never seeing them live.
Thank you Mike, you just made my day!
Great story ! I love your Sherwood green strat . I have a 62 reissue . I love your guitar playing .
That might be British racing green. Very cool colour for a Strat either way.
Thanks for sharing

I think it will be music that saves humanity. There is something very spiritually connecting about it. It connects our souls to the Eternal.
Watching that makes me feel like we have the same friends...who I never met in person.
How cool! We all have people we admire!
I feel it too. Wonderful musicians.
Fortunate to see Tom, Mike, and thev guys in 2012 at Little Rock. As others have said, very underrated player. And the work he does for animals is excellent. Good man.
Beautiful
Gave me chills.
Thank you for that.
Thanks so very much
Mike. The apostle.
Thanks Mike!
What a great story!!
Mike has ALL the stories - what a life!
Talented, beautiful human!
Tom and Mike icons!
1:03 action is really high on that i guess for the slide. I couldn't play it like that though. Beautiful axe
What a great story
Super musician 👌
Very cool Fender. Love you guys. RIP Tom Petty.
just a lovely few minutes.
