I never thought about changing the style of the structure with sightlines. That's so clever of them to do and shows how seamlessly they can blend everything without ruining the immersion
Anyone that cites Jim Korkis as a reference is definitely on the right track. Glad you're keeping real Disney history alive and making it public. I've read all his books but since 99% of people UA-cam instead of read anymore, it's up to you and other Disney historians to get the word out there. You're doing a great job. Thank you.
Thanks! My overall goal in keeping videos like this short and bite-sized is to hopefully inspire more people to check out the vast library of books that cover these subjects.
I think I first heard it used in reference to Vegas casino facades. But I always thought the name came from hot-dog stands themed like a giant hot dog. (There is actually one of those at my home park, Canobie Lake--they've got a giant popcorn box too.)
Rapunzel's tower is currently placed poorly in the MK, making it very visible from Liberty Square. Hopefully the trees there will grow enough to hide it from that angle while leaving it handy from Fantasyland in helping people find the bathrooms there.
Fascinating as always, Rob! My wife and I have always been impressed with how well Walt Disney incorporated psychology and human nature into his vision, and this is another great example of that. Side note: Maybe you should consider doing a video on your favourite Disney sounds/sound design. There's a lot to consider from voice acting, to music, to effects, to ambiance... Thanks and have a great day!
That would be a great topic. They are really effective at using music as the "soundtrack" to your adventure in the park, as if you've stepped inside a movie. Hearing that happy music as I walk onto Main Street is one of the reasons I can't help having a big grin on my face every time I visit the park!
You can see it if you look closely in the Magic Kingdom too; there's a building in Main Street where the opposite end is part of Adventureland. It's hard to see (by intentional design) but you can just barely see the thatched roof of the back of the building if you look up at the roof of the Main Street side. There's a lot of two sided buildings to carefull preserve sight lines so you're not aware of things outside of the land you're in breaking the immersion. I'd say the Tower of Terror looking like a building in Morocco from the other side is one of the most clever, but there's quite a few others if you look hard enough.
Awwww, having this aspect be inspired by his dog is the sweetest thing I’ve ever heard. (I bet Lady was the inspiration for lady and the tramp as well)
There are lots and lots of Disney videos out there. What I like about yours, you do research, have interesting topics and the length of the video is right (not too long, not too short). It requires a lot of effort on your part, thanks for doing it and sharing!
If you have taken video editing classes, you know it's cut, cut, cut until you have just what you need and no more. Problem with so many Video blogs, they go on and on and have little to offer (nothing on their cutting room floor, so to speak). Rob's timing is very good and he packs more information in that 5 minutes than most do in very long videos. There are exceptions, like if you are giving instructions where every step is important. 5 minutes is a nice length, without losing viewer attention.
Just LOVE "Esthetic Language", a term I'm going to adopt when trying to describe a thematic style designed to interconnect! Just another really detailed and intelligent Disney History lesson from Rob Plays. Thanks!
Honestly I love your videos and it brings a smile to my face when watching your channel, hoping to be an imagineer in a few years and you have definitely helped motivate that
Nice! Keep at it! If you haven't already, I suggest checking out "One Little Spark" and "Dream it! Do it!" by Marty Sklar. Great books on Imagineering and his time as one.
Meta Pod I’m pretty sure that animated Lady was named after real life Lady because I’ve heard a story about Walt gifting Lady to Lillian and that was partially an inspiration for Lady and the Tramp. Someone can correct me if I’m wrong though.
Can't get enough of this magical Disney details. I wish everyone knew the amazing heritage (small, but large facts - you know what I mean) that Walt Disney left behind for us. He was so passionate about his dream and this is what gives people like me hope. If everyone understood Walt Disney and why the parks exist, then maybe, just maybe people would be inspired to be more *genuine* throughout their life...aaaand they wouldn't look at me crazy when I tell them I'm going to WDW for my vacation (of course I do NOT care one bit what they think, it's just sad they don't understand). Thanks for making these vids!! °๑°
Just discovered your vids and in the dense plethora of "Disney Vlogs" out there yours stand out your love of the house of Mouse is clear your well researched and entertaining I'm a fan
I've been binge watching all these videos and they've inspired me to try to convince my friends to do disney for spring break next year (we're all 20-21, its an uphill battle to say the least)... Keep em coming!
Recently discovered your videos. They all are awesome, but I found this one especially interesting! (Also, you have a mesmerizing voice which goes with Disney's magical aspect) :) Cheers!
Hey Rob! Just want to say that I love these videos you do about how Walt was designing the park. I have a game idea based on theme parks like Disneyland and Universal Studios so these videos are really informative and help me think about potential designs.
I loved this video. I had never heard of the term Disney "weenie" before. Your unpacking of the term and examples in this video were perfect! I have a greater understanding and appreciation of Disney "weenies" because of you. Thanks!
I only recently discovered your channel and while all of your videos are outstanding, this one really stands out. Thanks for all the care and research you put into each one. So great!
Hi Rob! I just wanted to take the time to say thank you for making these videos! You do a wonderful job! I'm a true Disney World lover and the videos you make about the history is so interesting. Keep up the good work! Looking forward to seeing what you show us all next!
I just subscribed to your channel and mainlined a bunch of your vids and I wanted to say these little nuggets of info are so well presented and nicely succinct. Really professional and entertaining! Thanks for churning these out at the pace you do!
You may not have realized, THIS video mentions something important. For us, soon to be first timers, we don't know about the castles drawing the way back to the hub in Magic Kingdom. THANK YOU! We now won't get lost?! lol LOVE your videos. Great topics, voice & editing. THANK YOU SO MUCH! *Hugz from this Canadian gal
Hey Rob! Im happy to know I'm not the only one who loves the vintage disney vacation planning videos. I haven't heard you mention Ub Iwerks. I've heard story's about how he was really the creator of Mickey Mouse. I would love to know your take on this. Thank you
Hey Rob, you should do a video on the would have been built (but didn't attractions) of WDW and talk about how the parks would be different today if they had been (and what they would have been in place of currently). P.S. Love your channel!
all these outros give me Disney fever. Every. Fucking. Time. Especially the tomorrowland one, I felt like if I jut closed my eyes and reached out I'd be there, running to get into line at space mountain.
Never heard of the Weenie story... though I know the company has another term for the castle, tree, and spaceship earth... but I forgot what it was..? its been used in past promotion videos though.
You should do a video of where you think Disney is headed in the future! Like based on its rate of expansion and how/what it's doing now and all of that good stuff where you predict Disney will be in a few years
Can you make a video talking about how the 4 Walt Disney World Theme Parks have landmarks and how Hollywood Studios now doesnt have one, like how AK has the Tree of Life, MK has Cinderella Castle, Epcot has Spaceship Earth and how HS used to have the Earffel Tower, to then having Mickey's Sorcerer hat and now with both taken from the park what is going to represent Hollywood Studios? That has bugged me for a year now
I thought it was going to be those people that say Disney World is the best theme park in the world and has the biggest rollercoasters because that's the only park they've been to. They also think that Six Flags is one park.
I thought a Disney Weenie was someone (such as I) who refuses to go on thrill rides with high speeds or big drops. I can't DEAL with any ride with large ass drops. Disney sucks since Walt passed. I was in Disneyland as a kid in 1960 and was there for the opening of Disney World in Orlando. It is a huge ripoff now and I am sorry for the parents that have to pay so much to use it. It was very affordable back in the day.
I'm not the only one I'm sure who thought this was going to be about over priced hot dogs
No, I too thought this was going to be a food themed video.
I thought it was some type of mickey themed corndog.
Nope, i thought it had something to do with a iconic disney food i havent heard of.
Thought it would be about hot dogs
yes and i also love ur user and profile (3 years late)

I thought you were going to say that it was people who only ride the kid rides or only stay out for like 3 hours. I was way off
I did too. I was like "Oh look, people like me that won't go on the roller coasters!"
That's what I thought too. Either that or some kind of hotdog only served at Disney.
Same
Heh, weenie.
I've literally never heard the term "weenie"
SEJ 101 it a very old phrase or term. you probably know it had cookie crumbles...
Yeah, Eisner hated the term, used "visual magnet". He had absolutely no imagination.
I think I first heard it used in reference to Vegas casino facades. But I always thought the name came from hot-dog stands themed like a giant hot dog. (There is actually one of those at my home park, Canobie Lake--they've got a giant popcorn box too.)
What about a chaweenie?
SEJ 101 in the "Illumination short WEENIE" and i still don't like that word..................Hurl!
Oh...I thought it was that word they used in SpongeBob to basically describe a wimp.
Tyler Rakstis weenie didn't come from spongebob, it was already a thing
Rapunzel's tower is currently placed poorly in the MK, making it very visible from Liberty Square. Hopefully the trees there will grow enough to hide it from that angle while leaving it handy from Fantasyland in helping people find the bathrooms there.

Great idea! Sound (and smell) are also really important elements used when they're designing attractions.
Yeah, I enjoyed your favourite smells video, and I'm interested in how Disney incorporates the other senses.
That would be a great topic. They are really effective at using music as the "soundtrack" to your adventure in the park, as if you've stepped inside a movie. Hearing that happy music as I walk onto Main Street is one of the reasons I can't help having a big grin on my face every time I visit the park!
I know you usually don't tackle the international parks much, but the Ratatouille dark ride in Paris is basically all sound that makes it work.
@@MidwaytoMainStreet disneychris.com is a fantastic place to get more acquainted with the sounds of Disneyland.
Wow I had no idea about the tower of terror having two sides. That's amazing!

I know what a WEENIE is...as in, a weenie. Here.
"We should go on SPLASH MOUNTAIN!"
"Uhm...Its scary!!"
"LOL, No its not WEENIE!

Marge: That's what I said, foilage. It doesn't take a nucular scientist to pronounce "foilage".
There's always one word I seem to miss.
it happens to the best of us

Yes.

I always wondered how Disney polices their land with security while still keeping it family friendly
It’s so beautiful hearing “weenie” coming from that voice
The map at 1:50... WHY DID THEY TAKE OUT THE ALUMINUM HALL OF FAME AND BATHROOM OF TOMORROW??? Walt must be rolling in his grave!!!!
I've heard of the term at Disney but i never knew what it meant. Thanks for the explanation!
I'm so excited that my Dutch subtitles got accepted! Hope you like them! I'll try subbing more videos in the future.
Rob you've become one of my favorite youtubers! You've taught me a lot I had never heard of before. Great vid!
I thought a Disney Weenie was someone who used a Disney screen name and picture. People like that are major weenies.
Hah, never knew that. I just Love learning about the care and time Walt put into all of his work.
Hey Rob! Im happy to know I'm not the only one who loves the vintage disney vacation planning videos.
I haven't heard you mention Ub Iwerks. I've heard story's about how he was really the creator of Mickey Mouse. I would love to know your take on this.

I'm a Disney fan and had no idea about "Weenies." This was very interesting... great video! Please do more on lesser known park facts. ✌❤😊

Can't wait to go with the family look at Cinderella's Castle and scream out "Wow that's a pretty weenie" in the middle of main street.

I thought I knew everything about Disney.Guess we all learn something new each day.
I have never noticed the sawn and dolphin while in Epcot. I'll have to watch out next time I go.
I always loved the Swiss family Robinson treehouse. When I see that in Adventure Land I know where I am 😂
You should do a video of where you think Disney is headed in the future! Like based on its rate of expansion and how/what it's doing now and all of that good stuff where you predict Disney will be in a few years
Rob, you should do your top 5 hopes for the 50th anniversary at WDW!

Just when I think I know everything about Disney... This was fascinating!
Been 30+ times, taking a bunch of behind the scenes tours and absolutely never heard this term. Even on the fake history forums
You make such interesting and wonderful videos, Rob!
Do children know who Mickey Mouse is, anymore, though? D:
Thanks for the kind words! Regarding Mickey, based the reactions I experienced when he showed up during Fantasmic, I'd say they definitely do!
That was informative, thank you!
I think you explained that perfectly.
WDW's Adventureland has a big weenie, it's a giant pagoda thingy that has a bunch of birds in it.
I have never heard that term, ever.
Thumbs up for contrasting the Hollywood Tower Hotel with the Swan and Dolphin.
Wait, was this the "Lady" who was the namesake of Lady of "And the Tramp" fame?
Hmmm. I thought I knew it all, but you have schooled me, sir. YES!
I assumed it meant something like "noob" or "rookie" 😂 thanks for another great video!
I wonder if that gigantic Sorcerer Mickey hat that was at Hollywood Studios for some years would have counted as a weenie back then...
Never thought that I would ever hear the words "quintessential Disney weenie"
When I saw the title of the video I thought it was referencing a type of person haha
Disneyland: weenie hut jr Disney world: SUPER weenie hut jr
was the term "Foilage" intentional when talking about AK? Foliage would have been the correct term but if that was intentional thats a hell of a pun
I'd like to pretend I was just being super clever, but nope. I just messed up the word and never caught it during all of my editing.
Awesome job on 30K subs! Your channel is growing really fast!
Thanks!
You should do a video about the Monorails
this video is great, but after watching it I think I'm ready to never hear the word "weenie" ever again lmao!

And here I thought "A Disney Weenie" was the distance between trash cans at the park.
I thought a Disney Weenie was someone (such as I) who refuses to go on thrill rides with high speeds or big drops. I can't DEAL with any ride with large ass drops. I had a hella traumatic experience on Splash Mountain and haven't done any drops ever since except for California Screamin' (but those drops don't bother me for whatever reason). dodger stadium also has a signature weenie aka a dodger dog! 😂😂
Does New Orleans Square have a Weenie?
Good question! I wonder if some would consider the Haunted Mansion off to the side to be a weenie, but overall I'd say no it doesn't. I suspect that would have to do with the fact that the land wasn't built until the 1960's, and so it didn't fit cleanly into Walt's hub and spoke layout of the park.
After watching some old videos, I believe Walt intended for the Pirates of the Caribbean's exterior to be the weenie, but the Haunted Mansion has become the Weenie, mainly due to the POTC bridge covering most of the exterior of Pirates of the Caribbean.
Been telling people this for years and no one ever believes me.
I’ve heard the word weenie more times in this video then I have in my entire life
omg i just notice something hes dog is based on disney's lady and the tramp

For my park footage I use a Canon G7X II
The only Wheenie I'm considered for is for Wheenie Hot Jr.

Adventure land does have a weenie! The dole whip lol
