Probably one of the best home made canopy videos on UA-cam. I just watched another Chanel that said home made canopy where his dads workshop cut and made the framework and his dads mates workshop skinned it and a whole raft of other things outsiders did. This Chanel’s better and it can be made with minimal tools and is HOME MADE. well done.
Congratulations on one of the few truly diy canopies on UA-cam. Not everyone has access to/has the skillsets to weld aluminum. The composite aluminum/steel design is the way to go.
Excellent build been looking for ideas and I really like your concept. Will be building it on a nissan frontier pro4x. Whst was the weight of the unit? Since you are using steel framing not aluminum.
Absolutely lovely DIY build! Been searching for a video like this for long, to find inspiration for my own build for my Hilux (and confirmation I’m on the right track in my plans). Donno why i haven’t found this one before.. Any who, what would you estimate the weight of the the canopy, without the extra gear and interior, to be? And those locks/handles, they look absolutely perfekt for this build. What are they called? Where do they come from? Do you happen to have like an e-bay link och likewise? Best regards from Sweden
Looking for this exact type of build videos. Nice to see something homegrown online. USA dominates the online community. Very impressive look forward to building my top cap for a utility/delivery set up.
Yes, Chomma. It's looks lekker. How much does it weigh? Hows the colt holding with the weight and is the steering lighter now or the same? Suspension taking a beating? I have a 2.8 colt 4x4 and just found what I want to do and take ot to the Khalagadi.
Hi Dumi. I cant answer you on the weight but the bare canopy was lighter to pick up than the fiberglass one I had on. I have aftermarket suspension and rear can be ajusted to compensate for weight. Thus steering is good. I have to say the weight can easily add up and could be excessive. On the same note the Colt can handle a beating. Enjoy the Khalagadi as it is truly an epic adventure. Matopi camp and Mabuasehube was probably one of my most memorable trips ever.....
@@4wheelafrica676 thanks man i first have to get new tires and egt then I'll go check those spots out. In the meantime I'll start working on the canopy, oh by the way your the only one who actually gave measurements on your build and thats awesome can't wait to see what you gonna do next. Enjoy the beast.
Awesome looking canopy. You've inspired me to attempt something as close to this as possible in the coming weeks. Just one question, I'm quite a beginner to intermediate at this kind of stuff... For the angled square tubing, is there a way to calculate the cut angles, or did you just score it when the top and bottom sections were in place? Many thanks.
Awesome build! Would it work if I were to use aluminium tubing instead? If I use steel, how do I prevent water from seeping to the tube via rivet holes?
Hi Stan. I used steel as I can not weld aluminium yet. Also the price of aluminium was considered. I used sikaflex to seal the plates against the frame. I then drilled the holes and put some sikaflex in the hole and some on the rivet to give it a tight seal. 😀

Sure John. Thank you for the compliment. 🙂
Really inspiring. Thanks for sharing your ideas. Sheers from New-Caledonia.
You know it is in South Africa when you hear the Hadeda birds in the background
I am a beginner fabricator but I think you give me the confidence to do my own
Hey bud. Thats what its all about. Practice welding on a few cutoffs and go for it.
Great idea hello from Australia just found what I'm going to build
Thanks buddy. Send some pics. 🙂

Thank you for the video. Awesome setup. I got tired with my leaky & weak fiberglass canopy hence gonna make one myself.
Know the feeling Timothy. The alucab I build was also lighter even with the mild steel frame. 😉
Great video pal. Very informative.

Thanks mate really helpful video, great job !
Lekker Canopy. Thank you for the Awesome Video!!
Awesome! If only I had a 4x4....hehe. This is very informative, with in depth detail. Well done!
Thanks Johan. Maybe its time to get dirty!🙃
Thank you for the video, great example of your work.
Thanks bud. Appreciate the comments.🙂
How did you cut the holes for the locks

Thanks a lot for sharing, very neat job. I am going to build it. Question: Would you make any changes to the canopy ?
Hi Shane. For now now changes. Works well.
Great video! Do you think 40x40x1.5mm steel would hold the weight of rooftent and gear?
Hi Scott. Thanks for the compliment bud. It should hold the weight. Make sure the welding is sound! 😀
@@4wheelafrica676 Thanks for the reply! Starting the build next week

Hi there Capt. You score it when top and bottom are in place. Makes it less complicated. Thanks for the compliment.😉
How many sheets of aluminum did you use

@@stanhon9157 Awesome buddy🙃
great work !
Awesome build, just doing my own at the moment for a triton MN! What thickness aluminium sheet did you use?
Hi Stef. I used 2mm aluminium.
Where did you get the locks from???
thanks, very nice build. where did you buy the sheets please? I am planning something similar, but with Connect-it. PS, pragtige Colt
Hi Jacques. Thanks for the compliment. 😀. Bought the sheets at Non ferous metals in Pretoria West. Thanks for whatching.
How much was the total cost?
Nice man baie dankie, ek wil my bakkie se construction frame toe bou, het 'n paar idees gekry van jou video af.
How do you stop water coming out from the rivet during rain.
Hi there. I used blind rivets. Drill the hole and dip the rivet in sikaflex before placing it in the hole. Creates a solid seal.
Sorry I see a closed end rivet is a better word. 🙂
This is really nice.
Thank you🙂
Thanks Gavin, how’s the tomato plants? 😂
Netjies!
Seems a bit heavy and over engineered, better over than under. Well done!
Thanks bud. Agreed.
