As someone who spent 10 years designing utility truck bodies and canopies for a US manufacturer that builds 20k trucks/yr, I just want to say you guys did a good job.
This vid. came up on my feed. All hail the algorithm! Looked at your channel and realized I need to watch the build from the very start. Binged the whole thing and now I’m back where I started. What a great channel and then to see you put her through her paces was awesome. Thnx for documenting and sharing Richard. You have a new fan/subscriber here in BC Canada 🍻
Far out that is mint Richard. Grab some insulation material (high density closed cell foam for example) and place inside the roof and doors of the canopy. I did this with mine and it really cut the heat down.
OK, the solution to the 50mm lip at the bottom is so brilliantly simple. All other canopies I've seen have to have a false floor put in, which makes access so much worse. Very nice.
Done an amazing job and designed it awesome with thought out strength for the locks and doors no false floor is a wing for weight and more space inside!!!!! Just awesome! Can’t wait for the fit out and build inside now🎉
Nice work Richard! How the doors/seals/gutters/floor level etc were constructed is so well thought out. Plus the paint job is mint👌🏼 Looking for to the fit out and 12 volt set up videos
Quite an interesting video seeing the way you've done this, I'm an apprentice fabricator working in the ally canopy/4x4 accessory industry spending a bit of time on the tig and a lot of time on the brake press. Very nicely done, looks sweet.
Gday, mate I’m bloody impressed with how the canopy turned out, really like the flat floor and seal on the door, it’s little things like this that make all the difference, i’m keen to see how the fit out looks when it’s all done, brilliant job mate, cheers
Very cool vid, great to see one of these come together. Looking at the shot of gunshot at the end, your canopy would have tapped the wall. That made me think would you be better with a rear removable rollbar to take the corner hits?
Hey mate, just wondering how the bottom of the canopy stops water/dust ingress. Assuming a bead of glue along all the aluminium uni strut? Great video to show the process 👍🏼
Best self build ever! You motivated me to make my second canopy next year, with a steel tray.Great model and drawing! No one who has a brain and ability should buy an expensive one!
Nice work mate. Very similar to the builds I use to work on at Chameleon AMLS. I do like the 3 point locking setup they used better but the way the door seal you used is a better way
Awesome setup, I think the design from the unistrut to the seals , all make for what I think is the ultimate setup, my only question is how is it anchored to your tray?
Hey mate. loving the build. Just wanted to know where you got the fuel and water fillers from on your headboard? also how you encorporated the fuel tank breather.
Hey Nathan, fuel and water fillers are just from ebay! I think boat fillers, breathers are just out the top of the tanks - have a look at my fuel system episode!
Another informative ep there Richo and using local companies and still having hands on approach is bloody awesome, now you're with LCS will you be offering models of canopies like yours for other 40s owners
@a.al-kawari7451 I have never used 3000 series but generally the lower grades are softer and have less corrosion resistance. I wouldnt build a canopy out of it personally. 5005/5052 is the choice for this sort of work. But don't take my word for it, I'm not an expert on aluminium metallurgy whatsoever.
Weird Question, what cloth or meterial is that on the brake press? I do a few odd things and I always have to polish my parts and things after bending but I see this cloth helps with preventing bending marks. What is it called and where would I be able to buy some of it?
Blurry line, I could have just outsourced the cutting and folding like I normally do and then would it be DIY? 💁🏻♂️ Thanks though mate, appreciate it :)
I am always hesitant to give out costings as they may have changed over time, suppliers, wholesale price etc. But the unistrut cost was half of what you're suggesting.
Hey Richard, had a good think about it and I didn't think I would use the small amount of tray space, but I guess we'll test if out for the next 12 months and see!
I don't think the colour matters that much, all paint is black in infra red. The fact that an organic material like paint is conducting to aluminium will heat it as much as anything, but aluminium has a pretty low convection rate and high conductivity, so it should stabilise some of the heat out as a heat sink. That said, most of your surface area is inside, so if it really doesn't want to stay cool and cooks your shit, cover the top of the roof in aluminium RHS before adding your accessories on top. That will offset back down closer to ambient at least, for little weight addition.
ua-cam.com/video/nHVrAF5VFTI/v-deo.html funny to see how hightech tools can avoid any cratches on the aluminium. When the canopy get totured in the bush afterwords anyway. I guess.

how cool is this thing matt!
@@SarahandKeelanTravels it’s bloody awesome, lots of thought has gone into this
looks fantastic
clean and functional design well executed.
I hope i saw this early. I mean the way you show the process, it's really help a lot as someone who new and start on manufacturing and design journey
Thank you!
Looks awesome man. Great job.
I ran a Brake for 22 years at Kysor Warren!! We had about 25 brakes, When a die would get broke it was so loud!!!! But that was a NO NO!!!
can't say I've experience a die braking!
Awesome mate. It's come up great
Mate you have some awesome skills - well done!!
What CAD software do you use? I want to design and build my own tub canopy and not sure what CAD would be best?
Top notch job , but I really like the flat deck look , made it stand out from the crowd
awesome job guys
hey mate great video, i actually live real close to shepp how bloody cool is that!!!! on ya
What cad do u use and is it for free 👍👍❤️❤️🍺🍺 love the build
Any Chance of getting the gutter return section dimensions? just the sectional dimensions... the gutters and folds look so good!
So good what a awesome truck👍👍
Superb workmanship👍🏻🇬🇧
Far out that looks amazing
How are you going to put your uni nuts in the track ?Great canopy looks great.
You can just slot them in mate!
That's a tough fj mate.
The canopy has come up grouse mate, very nicely designed unit 👌
Paint job makes it mate! Thanks again
Awesome 👌

Great job. Loved the design insight 👌
Dude looks awesome well done 🤌
Very cool vid, great to see one of these come together. Looking at the shot of gunshot at the end, your canopy would have tapped the wall. That made me think would you be better with a rear removable rollbar to take the corner hits?
yeah possibly could be the move, would look great if it was integrated in - hard to do with steel/ally
Awesome work bud
Hey mate, excellent work. Where'd you get the ally unistrut from?
what sort of cloth does old mate have on the bottom V in the press? looks like there is no V marks on back side of ally
Looks good mate!
How are you going to seal around the tubes for the jacking points where they're not fully welded?
Thanks Corey! End caps were welded in before we welded them in the canopy!
@@DesignedandBuilt Ah of course, I didn't think of that!
Keen to see it finished
What material is old mate using to stop scratches on the press brake? Looks like kevlar or something
Can you do a video of your cad work flow? Make some awesome stuff and I’m trying to learn fusion myself it’s a struggle
Mint build!! Two questions but what mig he using and what glue is used? Got me motivated to build another one for myself 🤟
He's just using a standard MIG with pure argon. Roof is glued with sika flex!
Nice VC on the hoist
Badass Rig!
Hey mate, just wondering how the bottom of the canopy stops water/dust ingress. Assuming a bead of glue along all the aluminium uni strut? Great video to show the process 👍🏼
Why did you choose 3mm sheet? If you do this again would you use the same or lighter, maybe 2mm to reduce the weight?

Nice work mate. Very similar to the builds I use to work on at Chameleon AMLS. I do like the 3 point locking setup they used better but the way the door seal you used is a better way
Nice work! Any reason not to use the backguage on the Press Brake? I saw him adjusting the flange manually...
The back gauge is more hassle than it’s worth half the time, I like to visually confirm the press location to get perfect profiles
Great work m8 🎉 amazing design . May I know the grade of Aluminum used ?
5000 series!
Nice work.
very nice
Nice build 👌
Hey mate how much did the canopy cost in materials
Looks awesome. What grade aluminium is the plate? I'm surprised it wasn't cracking with the zero-radius folds.
5000 series
Hi mate, just wanted to know what CAD program you use. Cheers
Can you share the tolerances for the door seals?
Awesome setup, I think the design from the unistrut to the seals , all make for what I think is the ultimate setup, my only question is how is it anchored to your tray?
Gravity!! 🤞🏼
4xm12s through the tray with crush tubes on the canopy so it doesn’t pull the floors down :)
Cool, I know there’s a few people out there that would think gravity is enough, just checkout people leaving Bunnings !
Hey mate. loving the build. Just wanted to know where you got the fuel and water fillers from on your headboard? also how you encorporated the fuel tank breather.

Onya Richard, well done mate, is the canopy bolt to the tray or some other means, looks fantastic, great colour choice. Seeya Rob
Cheers Rob, 4 X M12s and crush tubes holding it all down
How is it secured to the tray? Sorry if I missed it.
Should have added it in the video. 4 X M12s with crush tubes!
Very nice. What sheet Ali was used to get the bends, 6061?
I'd bet it would be 5052/5005
6061 can be kinda hard, I've used it in sheet form but it's mainly extrusion.
@@tomez_why not 3003 ?

As a welder, the thumbnail makes my brain hurt.
How to assemble canopy with car bed?
What discs are the using for grinding the ally?
Just regular disks, I use WD40 or Anti-Splatter on them and keep spraying regularly
Well done. Now subscribed! Cheers
Not quite DIY when you're getting professional help with CNC machines 😅
Good work though mate, enjoy the videos, keep them coming

What supplier did you use to get the aluminium c channel?
Ullrich Aluminium
Great work mate, do you have a link for this business?

Aluminium unistrut is $32 a metre. That diy build cost nearly a grand in unistrut alone. I'd like to see your costings for this project mate!

Thought you might have gone not quite full length and had a small amount of tray space at the rear.

Hahaha, agreed. Like the look of it more than the canopy!
how did you mount it to the tray?
4 bolts!
