    Great idea to get a UA-camr like jayem to review it after it’s done. Should be a different beast once done, good luck.

      Thanks David, yeah he is 996 fan and former owner too so should give a good review 👍

      Nice, I'd have saved myself a lot of hassle if I bought the car from them! My first Porsche too, loving it so far and definitely missing it.

    Great video. My 3.4 got rebuilt shortly after purchase due to chain tensioners causing a rattle.
    If you are investigating rust, you should really go a step further and pop/cut the inner arch bungs out and shove a scope inside. I’m glad I did as I found a small patch to scrub and treat. Followed it all with cavity wax on top.

    • @leeevernden
      @leeevernden  2 роки тому

      Thanks. I do have a scope so would be good to put that to use. Access must have been tricky to treat rust in there, how did you manage to do it?

    Check the rear wheel arches, particularly the left hand side, they can corrode there. The arches front and rear get hammered with stone, also rather surprisingly the door shuts where the kick plates are fitted, rust can attack the ends and spreads under the kick plates, n/s is worst affected.

      @leeevernden  Рік тому

      Cheers Robin, I've checked all bar the kick plates so will have a look when it comes back. Oddly on mine the n/s arches are all good but the o/s front and rear had quite a bit of rust to deal with, not sure why that would happen.

    Well done Lee, great news on the exhaust hanger. My Boxster rattles and its the alu heatsheild attached to the underbody, some of the steel fasteners have corroded and fallen off.
    Your engine rattle sounds like a sticky tappet, I have had this in the past after not driving the car for a few weeks, a good blast sorts it out. These cars like to be used, good luck with the rebuild, looking forward to following your journey.

      Thanks, it has had an Italian tune already but any excuse to give it good blast is fine by me 😄

    Great series Lee. I’m planning to do exactly same 3.7 with my .1 C2 manual. Currently booked at Hartech end Oct so will be watching with great interest as you are couple of months ahead so I will learn a lot from your experience. Keep the updates coming 👍😊

    Hi there. Really interested in this project. I have a 997.1. Just put the engine back in after a full Hartech rebuild and re bore from 3.6 to 3.9. Haven't been able to drive it yet as it's not MOT'd and currently in a body shop for rust in the rear arches due years of mud from previous owners ;-)
    Wish I'd taken some acceleration references beforehand as you are. Very interested to see the results. Also follow JM so looking forward to his opinion. Good luck with it all.

    • @leeevernden
      @leeevernden  2 роки тому

      Ahh man those pesky previous owners! Anyway I bet you’re keen to get that car back, the 3.9 would be awesome. I’ve taken a camera recording of a 20-60 2nd gear pull but I might see if there is a more accurate way of doing it, reason being the speedo isn’t that clear and the digital readout is really slow to respond to acceleration, anyway I’ll see what else I can do.

    Really looking forward to seeing what hartech have to say about the condition of your m96 when they take it apart. (and Jayemm when he drives it with the new engine).
    Your ticking sounds potentially like a sticking lifter. I had one, take the car on a b road and keep it above 4k rpm for a few minutes and see if it improves.

    Did you weld a bit of steel back in

    • @leeevernden
      @leeevernden  2 роки тому

      No I didn't as it was right on the lip of the arch and was very very small. You can see the tiny bit missing in the video, it's all covered up there so the priority was just to make it rust free.

      Loud ticking noises like this are common with these engines. Don't worry about it if the car works. These ticking noises can come and go. If its not permanent then try not to worry about it.

    • @leeevernden
      @leeevernden  2 роки тому

      @@atrim8 It's permanent on this one. Like I say I wanted the 3.7 conversion anyway so the engine will be rebuilt regardless.

      Hi I have the same tick on a 3.8 conversion from nein lives in California. 1500 miles and one year 7 days , they will not homer warranty. Buyer beware. Also they said they will go out of business soon . But are still selling motors on eBay.
