  • The German player Alexander Zverev asked for the fan to be removed from the stadium after he was heard singing the song Deutschland Über Alles.
The match was halted after Zverev complained to the umpire that the chanting was "unacceptable" and "unbelievable".
Tournament security staff were called to ask the gentleman to leave and he did so without protesting.

@@sanjushah3061 while the phrase goes back to a poem written in 1841, it was the first verse of the anthem from 1933-1945. It was banned for a while after 1945 and while it’s not forbidden today it’s not the anthem anymore. The point is, it’s not just an innocent phrase because it’s very much connected to the third reich now. Clearly this guy did not show his appreciation for the original poem or the Weimar Republic. My guess is he wanted to provoke.

He did lose this match in straight sets, but he was serving in this moment. He was fully in control of the match's pace at this point time, and it was his rhythm that would have been disrupted. Also, this was a quarter-final match he had little chance to win. He went in ranked 12th and losing here would translate to a 5th or 6th place finish. He had already greatly exceeded expectations. I doubt he was feeling particularly nervous about this match.

@@jmedlin81but a good reminder. Nationalism is but a hare's breath away. For 8 years, the US basked in the wonderland of Obama and was followed by the Trumpa-Loompa era. Suddenly everybody in America hated on eachother, rallies became nationalistic, the MAGA craze was reminiscent of the NSDAP back in the thirties and culminated in storming the Capitol. That's how things started in Germany too. Within a decade, the country was a bastion of war and genocide. Look at the Maydan movement. Look at the rise of Jurg Heider. Look at how easy people were swayed to massacre eachother in Rwanda. It was nationalism and mob control. Learn about history but don't repeat it.
