      YouGoPro Obviously not a championship team but, it seems like a major league team (especially players of the same position) would, or should all interact and have a comraudery with one another. Not shy away from certain players. No matter their experience, or what position they play. Just a thought after watching the Astros win.

      YouGoPro Even though it was hilarious and I know exactly why Maddux didn't focus much on runners, I praise the guy for asking him. No harm, and Greg was a class act not throwing it in his face like a jerk.

    i met maddux when i was a 16 year old kid in 1994 . he took half an hour out of his day to explain pitching and - essentially - life to me. gracious as hell, wise and funny. one of the greatest moments of my life

    That’s awesome, I’m still a Braves fan because of when they had the dream team in baseball. Maddux, Glavine, John Smoltz, Steve Avery, Kent Merker, Pete Smith, Mark Wohlers, Terry Pendleton (3b), Jeff Blauser (ss), Mark Lemke (2b), Fred Mcgriff 1st base, Ron Gant (LF), Otis Nixon (CF) & David Justice (RF)...
    I still remember watching the 91 World Series, to bad we lost but it was nice in 95 to win.

      My first game was Maddux blanking the O's
      for the first time in a 128 game streak. It was like the game was over right after i sat down. Shortest game i ever seen.
      Brady Anderson was quoted saying
      "He's great. It's sort of amazing to watch him pitch and to face him," Anderson said. "If anything he's a little average at holding on runners. I'd imagine it's because he's a little inexperienced at that."
      No Brady! That is the professor at his finest.
      If ya steal second and Maddux gets the hitters out you score no run. Concentrate on the hitter!

    That was a fantastic story! Thank you! Do you know what happened with Barry Bonds and Phil Nevin during Cactus League Spring (in their playing days)?? I heard Mike Krukow talk about it years ago. Something along the lines of the Giants taking too long during BP, with Barry hitting again again again, while some of the Padres were standing at the cage hands on hips. Nevin walked up, said a thing or two. I remember Kruk said Bonds whacked him. Did you ever hear about that?!

    In a 2009 ESPN article entitled "17%", Maddux permeated the idea through the Padres pitching staff that only 17% of all runners who steal 2nd base score. Although he was wrong, no one questioned him.

    • @YouGoPro
      @YouGoPro  6 років тому +1

      Ahhhh 17% I thought I had the % wrong

    • @roysreceptive
      @roysreceptive 6 років тому +4

      No, chances are you had it in the right ballpark. In the article, Maddux wanted his pitching staff to believe that low percentage for base stealers scoring because he thought it was better for them to focus on the hitter and not the runner. It is sort of like driving while texting - you can only perform the two actions well to a degree, but really your concentration and energy are compromised, especially with a largely mediocre staff, save for Jake Peavy. That first year Maddux pitched for the Padres, the average for runners stealing 2nd and scoring against the Padres staff was around 40%, a figure much larger than what the league average was. But again I think with the caliber of guys in the rotation, he wanted them to take it one pitch at a time, one batter at a time, a mantra he has discussed in interviews that can be found on youtube.
      For the sake of your story, I think he told you that higher percentage because that's actually where the league average was. And since you were minor leaguers, he pulled his "gangsta" card and let you know he was not like everybody else. Good video though. Thanks for sharing your story. I don't know if you've ever thought of this idea, but have you considered interviewing your minor league team mates/buddies and compile stories about about your interactions with MLB players ? Funny interactions, their quirky or sadistic training regimens etc. It would make an interesting book and give those on the outside and interesting perspective on the athletes we watch so closely and fondly. But perhaps there is some privacy issues to consider. I don't know just a thought. I'm sure a publisher would find interest in it.

    Pretty cool story! Definitely a Mad dog kinda response to that question. But anyone who has any common baseball sense knows that a pitcher's main priority will always be getting the guy out at the plate. You make your pitches and everything else takes care of itself. That's why they have 8 other players out there.

    Lol that's funny. I follow Matt Antonelli too so I know he didn't say it. The only Maddux story he told was Maddux spitting tobacco juice on his leg in the dugout during spring training. Now I never met maddux, but I was stationed in San Diego in the Navy at that time and the Padres would always give us free tickets to go to the games. I remember watching maddux pitch, now granted I didn't know any other players because I'm from Connecticut so naturally I was following more the Red Sox but I might have seen you guys play

    I believe Justin Bour of the Marlins did that and got a hit off Thor of the Mets recently (or was it degromm) and it was like 4th/5th inning of a potential no no. Also the rf dropped his elbow into the strike zone and got hbp, ruining a potential perfect game . dudes notorious for that. I swear they need to make a rule for jackasses with armor pulling that crap. Anyway I guess it doesn't matter, not like anyone goes 9 anymore. Mad respect for Maddux and pitchers pre y2k

      That he didn't care that much if the runner stole 2nd, because he would rather focus on the batter than the runner. If he simply made his pitches, the runner would never score anyway.

      YouGoPro so there was this one game where a ball was hit in foul territory where our coach was standing in the coaches box and he stood there cause he thought for some reason that as long as your in the batters box your good but they called our guy because our coach didn't get out of the way anyways the next day at practice me and some of my teammates we're practicing at first taking pop flies and one went to the side in foul territory and and I almost ran into a friend trying to get to the ball and our other coach said something about do what coach did so the batter can get out anyway talking to my friend and we just started laughing it was so funny I was laying on the ground laughing in honesty u would've had to have been part of the team to see y it was so funny but it was great haha

    Bunting on a no hitter is fine if your team is down by 2 runs or less, and it’s earlier than the 8th or 7th inning

    Maddox was my dude. I don’t believe in not bunt to break up a no no. By any means necessary son.

      Yeah, that's like saying the goal is to lose. Can't score if you don't get on base.
