"I didn't intentionally give up a home run, but there are times where you try to have the hitter have some success off you so you know he'll be sitting on them the rest of the year," Maddux said. "...I had a coach that told me what hitters remember, and they remember success. So, [if] they get you on a certain pitch, they're gonna be sitting on it for a long time. "...I did it mostly in spring training. I think you try to plant a seed in guys' heads in spring training and try to get away from it once the season starts."
Same as the “throw a strike to induce weak contact.” You can just miss your target a bit but still throw a decent pitch, and claim you did it on purpose
He was brilliant on the mound. This guy had great stuff but it was his head that made him better than anyone else. My favorite pitcher to watch ever. Also, hands down the best fielding pitcher of all time.
True! He ended every pitch by being squared up, in a fielding position, ready to get that weak dribbler that he'd gotten most batters to hit back to him. He was great to watch. (And he was a pretty good sound guy, too!)
I miss watching the 90's Braves on tbs.... I used to watch them daily during summers of my youth. Good times. Braves during day & Mariners in evenings. Best pitching rotation was in Atl, with great cast behind them on the field. Seattle had an exciting line-up, but M's kept falling short. Mariners had an awesome squad in 90's! Lol. They just didn't finish....
He also stated that he played no mind games, saying he did little else than try to hit his spots like any other pitcher. Obviously he was playing the long con-even off the field, he was basically camouflaging his entire repertoire so hitters would think less of him until he came for their souls ☠️
Is he top 15? And what I mean by that: Lottery is drawn for teams. You are owner and get a pick from 1-15. You can pick from any era. Is Maddux your pick?
Either way, he's one helluva pitcher, he didn't necessarily need the high fast ball, back in the 80s and 90s, we'd call pitchers like him "junk ball throwers " however, he was one of the most effective in the game, glavin, smoltz and Maddux, what a bullpen the Atlanta Braves had back in the day!
There's a fun video on UA-cam of Maddux pranking Kris Bryant during a batting practice session. The practice was filmed, and Maddux was disguised as the sound engineer. Check it out.
When I pitched in high school, I had the same strategy, to let hitters have success off me over and over until just the right time, then BAM! I come in with my real stuff. It’s been 20 years, but the next time I face them, they’re going down for real this time.
I’m the same age as Maddux so I remember his entire career… man I hated that guy but when he was pitching complete games the game was over in 2 hours or less.
Hitting is timing, pitching is trying to upset that timing. He was a great pitcher but it didn’t hurt that he was given a a much bigger strike zone that most.
I know this is unpopular and it gets tiring when people say things like this but Maddux would get lit up if he pitched today. He had the most consistently generous strike zone I’ve ever seen and data that’s so readily available today would force the umps to tighten up. Maddux had incredible late movement on his pitches and that would certainly help but not getting calls 6-8 inches on either side would kill him.
Maddux was great, to be sure. But he was given a huge zone left and right. Especially that 2 seamer that bled back toward the plate. He'd get strike calls on balls an inch or more off the plate.
Look, I’m a lifelong Braves fan and I love me some Greg Maddux. However, I have to admit that even in this video short, there’s proof that his strike zone was larger than most guys. Also, to say that Maddux “would allow some success off of him in game situations that weren’t as critical, to induce a feeling of over confidence for the times where it WAS critical”, is just BS. There’s no chance that Maddux, or any pitcher for that matter, would just allow success. At the most, he may have changed his patterns to throw different pitch types into different zones of the strike zone, to throw off his natural tendencies and change algorithms for opposing teams to study from, but he didn’t just “allow success”. Like I said, love Maddux, but refuse to drink the kool-aid.
That's the most BS tbing I've ever heard. Confidence is a batter's best friend. Batting is mental. That's why players have hot streaks and slumps. You want them to come to the plate thinking "damn, this guy struck me out my last 5 at bats"
This is a clip from our full length video "There Will Never Be Another Greg Maddux" here: ua-cam.com/video/9dnsBIVAKLA/v-deo.html
He was playing chess while everyone else was playing checkers
Checkers hell, they were playing go fish
Truly
Slap Jack.
Lmao that last "fact" is one we're gonna have to take his word on
an easy way to fact check is to check his regular season and playoff stats

That is an old story about Maddux. He would give up hits to make guys feel like they were doing something.
@@Ryan-cb1eiwhat he said makes perfect sense
Best control of any pitcher
“Except that fucking Tony Gwynn”
Maddox, Smoltz, Glaven, and Avery were the best rotation I’ve ever seen .
The braves rotation in the 90s was absolutely terrifying
He was brilliant on the mound. This guy had great stuff but it was his head that made him better than anyone else. My favorite pitcher to watch ever. Also, hands down the best fielding pitcher of all time.
True! He ended every pitch by being squared up, in a fielding position, ready to get that weak dribbler that he'd gotten most batters to hit back to him. He was great to watch. (And he was a pretty good sound guy, too!)
I remember Maddux so well growing up watching and playing baseball. He was something special.
Always loved his little hop after his release
Maddux would thrive off analytics
Next level shiit right there
When the Cubs let him leave It took a long time for me to respect Cubs again
For me, this guy was the greatest pitcher ever. I've never seen a pitcher mess with a batter's psyche like Maddux did
That's why they called him the "Professor".
He also played his position like a cat.
Maddux was one of the scariest pitchers ever.
There are a lot of words to describe him. Scary is not one of them.
Had the pleasure of seeing him pitch several times and you’ll never see a pitch move around like he could do.
Only Greg Maddux can be praised for batters hitting the ball 😂
Other pitchers would too if they got hitters to hit the ball like maddux
I miss watching the 90's Braves on tbs.... I used to watch them daily during summers of my youth.

Mariners had an awesome squad in 90's!
Lol. They just didn't finish....
Maddux was making that strike zone dance!
The G.O.A.T. And I was a Pedro Martinez guy.
In other words Maddox was playing chess while everyone else was playing checkers.
He also stated that he played no mind games, saying he did little else than try to hit his spots like any other pitcher. Obviously he was playing the long con-even off the field, he was basically camouflaging his entire repertoire so hitters would think less of him until he came for their souls ☠️
Thats the card counter in him
Definition of a legend
Also the best fielding pitcher ever.
This is the definition of playing chess while they were playing checkers
His dad was my pitching coach in high school
Best pitcher ever ..
He isnt just a great pitcher and legend he is a smart pitcher
I wish he would go down in the hof as a brave but I can’t argue with joy choosing one
Certainly had his success with the Braves.
Bro was literally playing 5d chess
Favorite pitcher of all time.
Him and smoltz. I loved it
He got a 30 inch plate is what he got.
Its what he made bro there is a difference
Imagine a guy like this in a robo ump world that is fast approaching. He was so accurate, he would force the ump to expand the zone.
the entire rotation tracked what they threw to each batter. and knew detailed weaknesses because of it
He batted aight 2
that’s crazy smart, props to him!
Mad Dogg...
Is he top 15? And what I mean by that: Lottery is drawn for teams. You are owner and get a pick from 1-15. You can pick from any era. Is Maddux your pick?
Just pitchers? Yes
All around players? No, I'm taking Griffey Jr
What an animal
That’s so crazy how is it possible for a pitcher to remember a at bat months earlier and remember how he struck you out!
He probably wrote it down or had someone else write it down
The pitcher that pitches the next day tracks all the pitches thrown the day before so they have a record of these things
@@jewsco yes although now they have pitch fx data, so I’m not sure if they still do that. That’s how they did it back in the day for sure.
probably just good memory or his love for baseball
Either way, he's one helluva pitcher, he didn't necessarily need the high fast ball, back in the 80s and 90s, we'd call pitchers like him "junk ball throwers " however, he was one of the most effective in the game, glavin, smoltz and Maddux, what a bullpen the Atlanta Braves had back in the day!

good lord look at that zone he’s getting
When I pitched in high school, I had the same strategy, to let hitters have success off me over and over until just the right time, then BAM! I come in with my real stuff. It’s been 20 years, but the next time I face them, they’re going down for real this time.
And then there's Tony Gwynn
His BABIP was equal to MLB average
I’m the same age as Maddux so I remember his entire career… man I hated that guy but when he was pitching complete games the game was over in 2 hours or less.
Also helped that the strike zone back then was Twice the size
Hitting is timing, pitching is trying to upset that timing. He was a great pitcher but it didn’t hurt that he was given a a much bigger strike zone that most.
The Professor
He was nasty
Chipper Jones was the same way at the plate
Brilliant
The fact that he got 6 inches off both sides of the plate didn’t hurt either.
Indeed! Watching him get those calls for years was aggravating as hell
I know this is unpopular and it gets tiring when people say things like this but Maddux would get lit up if he pitched today. He had the most consistently generous strike zone I’ve ever seen and data that’s so readily available today would force the umps to tighten up. to bad he couldn’t remember how to strike out tony gwynn
Maddux was great, to be sure. But he was given a huge zone left and right. Especially that 2 seamer that bled back toward the plate. He'd get strike calls on balls an inch or more off the plate.
His 2 seamer inside to lefties was a thing of beauty…them ducking out of the way only to be called for a strike 3 *chef’s kiss* 🤌
So he was different because he was a sportsman with a brain
Another thing he did was get calls five inches off the plate on both sides
Exactly
As did everyone pitcher in that time. And the batters were juiced more than ever.
One of the most filthiest pitcher to ever pitch the ball 💯💯😬 Automatically a HOF💯💯
What an awesome rotation.
Maddux
Glavine
Smoltz
Avery
Agreed 100%, it was a treat to watch them
But he never beat NEW YORK YANKEES.
Yes he did.Game 2,96 WS,8 shuotot innings in NY.

go cubs
Maddux 's iQ is incredible
I guess that didn’t work with mr.Padre Tony Gwynn
