- Today we got a great start on cutting and splitting some large logs and filling our trailer. Trinh is on the splitter and I’m back and forth between cutting, and helping splitting to make it a smooth and fast process.
We will stack the wood at our woodshed on another day. We try to keep 5-7+ full cord on hand for each winter, and use about 4-5 full cord to heat the house the entire winter. The splitter is made by RuggedMade and is a 37 ton, Type 2 splitter with the hydraulic log lift, 4 way wedge, and the tray table.
Those are some big chunks 👍🏻
It’s still tough to handle but the machine makes it much easier. Got to love that lift!
Going to get your lady hurt! Both of you heading for back trouble! 64 now, did the same when I was young. We use a skidsteer now, with a Ramsplitter for big wood. I have endured 3 slipped disc in my back, it’s no fun! 👍🏼🇱🇷

That's a huge red oak, my dad has one in back yard that I trimmed, and just the branches were heavy, I can't imagine how heavy those rounds are.
It wasn’t very fun dealing with them but it did give us a lot of wood. “Free firewood” isn’t always free. I’ll pass on the next stuff this big! The branches you trimmed were probably the perfect size for splitting though!

Great job guys! I like that splitter. That lift and fence must really help with those massive rounds. Very clever setup with the dump trailer in close proximity to the splitter. Thats what i plan on doing with mine as well. I have a DR Rapidfire XL. What kind of splitter is that?

Our process gets a little bit more efficient every year, it’s still a lot of work but it’s not that bad.
I have watched many videos re cutting and splitting wood. In all cases, I never know where the wood came from in a rural setting, of course. I actually have seen one video where dead trees were cut down cut up by the author of the video. Can you give me some information re where individuals cut down trees when they are not on their property. Thanks for your reply.
I looked on Craigslist usually for “free firewood” and at times I would have to take down trees for people or remove trees that fell in a storm. That requires having a lot of equipment unfortunately and takes a lot of time.
Be an opportunist and always be looking for wood!

lambiepie I have not, *however* in Michigan we can buy a permit from the state for like $50 to cut 4 or 5 cord a year from certain state property, but you are only allowed to cut downed trees that fell naturally...not cut anything down. Hope this helps!

That is some large log. You should ways roll the log on the round side that is much easier. You two are hard workers

We filled out trailer with only 15 pieces of that wood! We have 4 more face cord to split and we are finished for the year with wood 🙏🏼
Our wood shed holds 5 full cord or 15 rows. (Each row is one face cord) and we generally burn around 4 full cord each year.
Urban Homesteading well make your shed bigger. I would if it was me i would make the shed big enough to where mine could hold 40 cords.
I need one of them! The log splitter would be nice too.
Something that would save you some time and effort moving those large rounds onto and around on the splitting table is to noodle them on the ground. Doesn't take long, and it cuts the work of handling the big pieces down by half.
Thanks for watching Mitch. Could you explain what noodling is? I’m not familiar with that term. I did try to split some smaller with a monster maul and wedges, but they just bounced right off and only dented these big pieces. 😣
@@BlueyesBelow here is a video of noodling. You simply cut the round vertically while the round is laid on one side. If you do this with a sharp chain it goes very quickly and makes the piece much easier to handle. The noodles also make awesome fire tinder! ua-cam.com/video/l5V-6zxZDqU/v-deo.html

Hey which product would suggest the RS-537 or RS-728 and any support among your answer ,ideally not splitting anything over 30"
Hands down the RS- 728. The log lift is really a neat feature, even if not needed for lifting huge logs. I use it as a tray table and stack a LOT of rounds on it and work continuously from it for quite a while. The tray table at the end really helps keep you from bending over constantly to pick up your split pieces. It really is the proper way to go.
If you have multiple people working the splitter, someone can keep rounds piled up on the tray table and can also be stacking the split pieces as they pile up. It’s a really efficient way to process wood 👌🏼
So what do you do with the bark? I noticed you throw it off to the side. I was wondering if you keep it for kindling? Not sure why I am so fascinated with watching wood cutting & splitting videos.
Hi Marcia, thanks for watching! We do take small pieces of wood and bark that fall down to use them for kindling, or bonfires...but mostly I scoop up all the bark and waste from the splitting process and take it to the woods or compost pile. I don’t like a messy yard, and try to take care of things as soon as I’m done splitting.

I think that the fascination you experience is because it takes us back to another time, another place, when life was simple, involved hard, but fulfilling work, and we get a sense of that pleasure of a job well done and the reward of honest work from videos like these.
I just started splitting by hand at the age of 65, even though we have heated with wood since 1997.
My sons did most of it, and now 22 years later, I start splitting wood with Axes and Mauls; AFTER a divorce, heart attack and mini stroke.
I am working on being in the BEST physical shape of my life and intend to enjoy the times ahead... Which I believe will REQUIRE work like cutting, splitting and stacking Firewood to stay warm.
I want to be able to "Help carry as many people as possible through the dark forces window of time."

Red oak, solid, heavy and wet. Any ash here in Michigan is mostly dead and a lot smaller from all the dead stuff I see

She should really be wearing steel toe boots. I speak from experience....a 10 pound stick will break a toe or other small bones in your foot.

she wore shorts and crocs last fall when splitting, so what she had on IS an improvement.
I do make sure she has earplugs though and she usually wears safety glasses. I’ll see if I can’t work on the feet 😉

I’ve had my foot ran over many times in skateboarding shoes like vans etc never once broke a bone.
floatpool I was moving a bookcase once and to do so I had to empty it first. It had a LOT of very big books on photography, animals etc, one pile slipped and ended up on my left foot, as I was indoors I wasn't wearing safety boots. my foot instantly came up like a balloon, hubby took me to hospital and amazingly no broken bones. that was around 8 years ago. Ever since I've had constant problems with nerve pain and my toes ache like crazy when I've been stood or walking a while. I'm 50 this year and do have Hypermobility Syndrome so I heal slowly but once you damage something it's never right again. needless to say I take all possible precautions when helping hubby to cut and split logs.
And no hearing protection.
My wife broke some bones in my foot several years ago, I WAS wearing steel toed boots. The steel toe only goes so far. I kept her though.

I like turning the splitter upright so you're not lifting the pieces and rolling them instead.
This is not one of the models that tips up, this has a hydraulic lift to bring the pieces up, I’ve used one before though.
She is great at splitting, but not much of a tosser! Ha ha. If he would quarter those rounds first...it iappears to be very srptraight grained oak, then they would be a lot easier to handle. And the truck is parked just a little bit far for her to toss wood into it...I noticed she gave up on that after about the 4th splitting.

It’s a great machine! We have the electric start, but our battery went bad over the winter so I yank on it for now. A new battery is coming soon 👍🏼

That splitter isn't being used anywhere close to its true potential. That thing could push at least three more knives at the same time.
I’ve thought about making a 6 way wedge for it but It does pretty good as is. I’ve only gotten the ram stuck a few times on really big red oak and had to take a sledgehammer to knock it free. Lots of power for normal sized stuff though. Thanks for watching!

How much do you have to split
I usually split five full cord a year minimum, as that is generally what we use for the winter

We got ours done early this spring so I wouldn’t have to do it a little bit here and there all year.
The splitter helps a great deal but it is still a lot of work!

Great equipment! As watching, you should please tell the mrs. Not to hold her hands on the logs,..they are doing well without her following the log on route..I can tell you this because I learned it the hard way..suddenly three fingers cut over because of what were doing!

As your video clearly shows, wood heats you more than once. I'm glad you had a hydraulic lift on the splitter to lift those rounds. Very cool measuring device too. Great video.

No, I’m not selling firewood anymore as it’s not worth the time and effort since I don’t have a good source. Also a lack of time..: I barely have enough free time to split for myself as there are many other things I’d rather be doing!

The saw is a 372xp, but I sure wish it was the 390 for those huge logs!
The saw has been great and is a real workhorse. I like my 450 rancher for smaller wood though, it’s like a race car vs a 4x4 and is much lighter to swing all day.

It seems that is always the case except when I buy one brand new. I can never get it as sharp!
I used to enjoy gathering wood. .i didn't have equipment only maul ax saw..no trailer or power splitter
Put a return spring on your forward handle. When you let go, spring pulls hand back for return.
You can make a lot of money doing this, my Dad and Brother-in-law did.
But straining is hard on heart.

How has this splitter been? I see engine a bit harder to start? Any issues?
It’s been really fantastic, I don’t have a battery hooked up to it currently... but when I do it fires right up. A little bit harder to pull start. It was a very good investment
That's red oak ur doing the right thing getting it bucked up and split put it away right ideally stack it in a sunny windy place and cover only the top. Takes awhile to properly season

Throwing the split pieces is supposed to be my job but you are absolutely correct, we should of had the trailer closer. I now split at our wood shed and stack it directly from the tray after splitting it to increase efficiency and lessen handling it. Thanks for watching!
I’m looking for a splitter...I have about four cords to split and then I’ll give it to my father in law for his farm...was looking at the 22 don’t know if the 37 is over kill. I originally wanted one that you could make vertical....any thoughts
Hey Jeff, the 37 Ton Is a work horse if you have a lot of wood to split. My views are, “time is money”. I have such limited free time, so I need to split the wood and be done with it, which is why I went for the big one.
I also believe in “buy it once and but it right”.
A wood splitter is an investment so I would get the best one that you can afford because it will be around for a long time.
I have used the vertical splitters before but I prefer standing up when I split instead of getting up and down all day. I can move faster and more efficient if I’m up and able to move around.
Wrestling the big rounds into place on a vertical machine sucks. The big ones (in the video) kinda suck on my machine too though to be fair. The log lift and tray table is awesome though. Regular sized wood is a dream. 👍🏼
If your dad has a lot of wood to split, I’d go with the 37. A farm is a busy place and you’ll generally never be done with projects, so time is money.
We just split about 4.5 cord and it took us a good while even with this. It’s a lot of wood and a lot of work no matter how it’s done.

Thanks for the reply... yea I’m leaning to the larger... I’ve read some mixed reviews about these... how’s the motor... I always have been a Honda guy... but don’t know if it’s just over kill.
The motor has been great, a real hoss. I was somewhat leery of the off brand motor but it’s honestly been great.
Yea I think I’m gonna go with the 37…I like the electric start. I’m guessing you would recommend the motor you have…don’t know if a pull Honda is worth the money and loosing the electric start. For the extra 800 having the bigger machine seems like a smart move
When I bought mine, there wasn’t an option to upgrade motors to a Honda, but I’ve had zero issues with mine. I use both the electric start and the pull starter (depending if I have a good battery for the splitter at the time) and it works good either way. My wife easily pull starts the splitter herself! 😀👍🏼
You won’t regret buying the bigger splitter...especially after running it and having that log lift/ tray table/4 way wedge.

why you spit your firewood so thin i was alwas told to burn thick pcs so you dont have to keep filling the wood stove
Hi Tim, thanks for watching. Everyone has a different size woodstove, but wood dries faster and more thoroughly if it’s split small. I can split it in the spring and have it ready and fully dried by winter but also because when I have a variety of wood sizes I can put the large pieces on the bottom, the medium ones on top of that and the small ones to fill in any gaps‘s to have a fully stocked stove for the night. We get anywhere from 8-16 hours on a load in our inside wood stove. It’s very efficient. We have a Blaze King Princess Ultra.
If I only had large pieces, then I would only have a full stove if the pieces fit perfectly so to make life easier I just have a variety of sizes which also makes starting a fire easier when you have the small pieces to bring a fire back from coals. 👍🏼

My grandpa used to go on and on about that because he had back problems. I made the mistake of listening to him, since my early thirties my knees bother me instead of my back.
Why don't you cut the logs in half 🌗 first mite be easier to handle
I might do that next time, but I did try splitting some in half or quarters with wedges and a splitting maul, but it just bounced off of these. It was very tough to deal with pieces this large and I’m glad they are gone! Thanks for watching

You need to be using a vertical splitter for logs that big
I tried that before with a different splitter and it’s very difficult moving the big section around when it’s laying flat on the ground. I found that to be equally as difficult if not more. Personal preference but I can slide it around better on the metal than the dirt. It’s all hard work though. Thanks for watching
Get a chainsaw mill and make some lumber too good to burn
I had one and then bought a new woodmizer sawmill which I ran as a side business for a couple years. These logs were dropped off for the mill by a tree company (for free) but were way too big for it. We heat with wood so it’s not a total waste to cut it up but it was a bit hard to do because they were nice.
I’ve got piles of lumber stacked around so I didn’t need any more.

Why cut saw logs.for firewood?
These were way too big for my sawmill so I didn’t have a choice. A tree company dropped them off and I don’t have any equipment to move them either, so firewood is the only other choice, but we needed firewood more than lumber.

Get her a pair of gloves that fit and she might actually like what she's doing plus you'll be able to throw them logs all the way to the front of the trailer.
She loves splitting wood with whatever gloves she wears, or bare handed. It’s not something she dislikes. I’m not sure where you got the idea she doesn’t like it?

@@BlueyesBelow If you say so... but if yes, and that quality and diameter, looks like you made $400 of firewood out of $1200 worth of prime, perfect saw logs. The rest of the world would dream of having such a resource in their yard. Burn junk wood, make mantles out of such logs. RESPECT FOR THE WOOD.
You definitely do have a point there however these were so big that I couldn’t move them. They were dropped off by a tree company when I was at work and sat where they sat. The logs were absolutely massive. My sawmill would have been crushed. (They were also way too large in diameter for the mill) so my only choice was to cut them for firewood. There were nails in some of this also that I found while splitting.
