    Verse 2:6 says they did build barges and crossed many waters -(smaller bodies of water)BEFORE they built the ones to cross the ocean. I think a 4th way this story shows how God might answer our prayers is to tell us as in verse 16, Go to work and build…after the manner you did before. Sometimes God has already helped us through a similar problem and we need to go back and reflect on that previous experience as we face the new challenge.

    Krystal thank you for sharing your feelings when you lost your brother. It was very similar to feelings I had when I lost a son and then later a sister. At some points in our lives we have to dig a little deeper. Shortly after I lost my son I was reading these verses in Ether. I recall telling the Lord that I needed some help healing. I told God that I was going to serve a sister that I ministered to that day and asked him to touch my efforts so that they would bring light into my vessel. I testify that He did exactly that! These verses are sacred to me.

    One thing that stands out to me is that the brother of Jared did not have a complete knowledge of God to have the veil lifted from his eyes. He had no idea that God was in the form of a man, and yet he was still able to come into the presence of God. Because of his faith in the Lord, he was able to enter into His presence. We do not have to have a perfect knowledge of everything. We just need to believe and have faith in Jesus Christ, and we, too, may enter into His presence.

      Well said. I think the way we come into the presence of the Lord now is through the Holy Ghost. When we receive the gift of the Holy Ghost, we have access to the greatest Light available in this world.

    It just dawned on me that God gave the answers to the brother of Jared about the needs of air (God provides us life freely) and also the problem of steering (God will lead us) but wanted the brother of Jared to ponder on the lack of light just as we need to ponder and choose to receive lights (understanding, wisdom, mystery of God). 🤷🏻‍♀️

    Thanks for these podcasts.
    I was glad you discussed the reference to the shining stone in the footnotes in Genesis. My slight alteration to the lesson is this: God answers prayers outright when he needs to, but if he has answered the question before, we need to do some studying to find the answer. Tough for us in the last days because a lot of answers have already been given. I don't expect many handout answers. I expect the Lord to almost always be asking me what I think should be done. But the nice thing of the question the Lord asked is that he didn't say, "What will you do to solve this problem?" He said, "What would you like me to do to solve this problem?"
    My second thought is about the 4 years of not praying. I don't know why the Brother of Jared didn't pray (or what the phrase really means) but if I insert myself into the story, the details are clear. I never stopped praying, at least I had regular prayer, but I was totally unwilling to ask the next question that I knew was sitting before me. I knew what the answer would be, and I didn't want to ask. These waters? Those barges we have been building? Please no. I just won't ask. And I suspect I'm not the only person that has some things that are just stuffed in a closet or hidden in the corner that I don't really want to address at this moment, but I won't really be able to move on until I do.

    • @EowynG191
      @EowynG191 11 днів тому

      Beautiful! And eye-opening about not wanting to ask just yet. I totally agree that we do behave like that (as opposed to suggesting he didnt pray at all).
      I thought of it more like they got into the routine of things and only had sort of flat, surface-level prayers - as opposed to profound, real conversations with the Lord where you open yourself up and actually get a response. Life was alright, so they got into a spiritual lull 🤷🏻‍♀️

    As always Great podcast, I like how Hank pointed out that those three things on 17.41, the boats had no air, the Lord gave him answers, then to steer the Lord says I’ll do it, and then when he got to the LIGHT, it’s, he asked what do you want me to do?
    as with all light we need to Work for “HIS LIGHT”…use our agency, seek, and work towards receiving his light… He wants us to work that out for ourselves with His help. I loved how it showed those three examples!

    I am grateful for this example of Heavenly Father giving the brother of Jared the opportunity to practice decision-making. I think the goal is to practice and practice our decision-making skills (which of course includes the 'studying it out in our minds...', prayer, listening to the Holy Ghost, etc) until, sometime in the future, we will find that the decisions we make are exactly the decisions that HF would tell us to make.

    I think we discount too quickly the need for evidence of the Book of Mormon not as proof that we are right and others are wrong...but it is an explicit covenant with the patriarchs of the book that it will come to their descendants and brethren that those descendants will know what great things God has done for their fathers and for them. That can not be fulfilled in its entirety without connecting those children to their fathers in a literal and meaningful way....also I think that one of the reasons that the plates could not be left behind was not only our need of faith but if you think of what mainstream academia has done to any artifacts that don't fit their narrative it gets cast to the bin of fraud and forgery and becomes a real challenge for people to have any confidence in. If it were before our eyes there would be no less need for faith, but there would be mountains of naysayers pointing out all kinds of reasons to why it is a fake and forgery and those direct declarations are damning to so many artifacts that are in fact legit but held under by mainstream science because they don't follow their models and their understanding. Not having the plates is a blessing as it allows us to refer to the content not confused as much as we could by mainstream scientists. They already do much to tear it down and little by little their dogmatic stance is eroded showing more and more the historicity of the Book of Mormon.

    I think the bro. of Jared probably was praying because he was their spiritual leader; prayer was probably ingrained into his schedule. However, (like me), when life is good after difficulties, my prayers gush with gratitude, and there isn’t an immediate need to commune and counsel with the Lord, so my prayers become fairly rote. Maybe, he wasn’t seeking to commune with God.

    What if seeing the plates is akin to making a covenant, the trespassing thereof is a pretty big deal. Few people see the plates because it's a heavy duty amount of knowledge and therefore responsibility and the Lord may not have require that of all of us due the high consequence for breaking said covenant. That's why we don't want people entering covenants until they are ready and able to keep them.

    I love this podcast! Thank you for your efforts and your great inspired guests! Just a couple of comments - how could the Jaredites learn from the Egyptians about deseret? Remember, they had been one people until they were confounded and scattered. They all had the same knowledge and took it with them when they went their separate ways. The whole point of the confounding was that they couldn’t communicate with each other;.and the Jaredites got themselves out. Could it be that deseret is the Adamic word? Wasn’t that what Jared and Co. were left with while everyone else was confounded?
    Also, the Lord did not give faulty instructions about the barges. He was merely leading them step by step… they didn’t have to know the end from the beginning, any more than Nephi needing to know that he was going to kill Laban before he agreed to go back and get the plates. They were receiving instructions all along the way.
