Poor negotiating skills and lack of understanding of entertainment business. It is highly common to see multiple producer companies involved on show or movie. That's why you see so many production company logos at the start of movies and at the end of tv shows.

That happened even in historic empires. The conquerors would always take that which was good from the conquered, and apply it to their own culture, and try and take the credit for it.

Eric Monte seems like he’s telling the straight truth. You can’t debate or second guess his veracity. You know how that did back then to talented black writers, producers, actors, and actresses
I feel so bad for him. After he was forced to accept pennies on the dollar in his lawsuit in which he should have received hundreds of millions of dollars, he was blackballed by Hollywood. He used the money to finance a play that bombed and ended up homeless. While homeless he became an alcoholic and addicted to drugs. He dried up and moved to Chicago, then to Oregon. If he's still around, I hope he's doing well.
Michael Evans ( Lionel) was always my favorite on All in the Family, especially. He was highly intelligent, funny and intuitive. Many people never noticed his name in the credits on Good Times. He deserved money and respect not all the stress and hassle he got for his excellent efforts also.
Lear finally passed away at a really old age but I often wonder if he hung on because he feared meeting his maker to atone for his immense sins. In the next life Eric Monte will be rewarded. What a talented and decent man.

White privilege was even stronger back then. If things are as bad as they are today, I can't imagine what it was like back then. Black people VS white people in old times in legal matters must have been 95-5 against no questions asked(5% of the time must have been only if the black person was a celeb and the white person was not, the celeb had a bigger name than the white celeb, the white judge/cop chose to do the right thing, or the black person was connected to somebody important/important to the courts). FROM THIS ACCOUNT, IT WAS A MUGGING WITHOUT RECOURSE!

The New Good Times animated series on Netflix is a glorified stereotypical show that has damaged the image of the original Good Times family show that started in 1974 through 1979. The goal of the original Good Times show was to disrupt the flow of negative stereotypes about black families. This New series promotes violence, culture destruction of the Black community and alcohol abuse. This glorifies the degenerate, destructive behavior that some in MOST community's engage in, but this series aims to promote this as a normal behavior in the black community. Tell that to Ricky Schroder and his glorified pimp of a mother. I seriously wish they had taken *Silver Spoons* to another production company just because seeing a cast that good wasted on a buckbreaking grifter like Lear breaks my heart to this day. They could have carried a show from any production company. I honestly wish they had taken the show to Alan Landsburg. His company made *Gimme A Break!* and *Kate & Allie,* and those are on DVD in their entireties, so maybe that show would be, too. Instead, it is stuck with Sony and they are gatekeeping the Franklyn Seales and Alfonso Ribiero episodes because they do not want to see any role models for Black MEN, especially not Gay Black MEN. They are also gatekeeping *227* (a Black father who lives at home, can support a whole family on a single income, and isn’t a bigot or a bully? Can’t have that, now can we?) and *Benson,* particularly the episodes where he is no longer the butler and actually has a political position. Never mind the last episode where he runs for governor. And do not throw the “poor sales“ excuse in my face. Tell that to my copies of all these shows on DVD.
That's a shame, why can't they just to the right thing and pay Mr.Monte, because they made millions then and they're still making millions off of his work..... Not fair and not a good look 😢
How much money are these shows generating per year and where is the money going? Probably paying for Sony‘s middle management. I imagine *Seinfeld* still makes more in reruns just for being more recent.
Movie, TV, and music was always a cut throat business. Remember hearing an interview from James Garner how he didn’t get paid for what he was worth from The Rockford Files and all the reruns.
What’s even worse is that people still believe the narrative once it has been discredited. They even give Lear credit for shows he had nothing to do with. I still have to point out to UA-cam video documentarians how many shows were made by his collaborators without him. Frankly, those hold up better.
The movie got a Criterion Collection Blu-ray edition, and everybody from it who was still alive was invited to participate in the creation of extras. Everyone, that is, except for Eric Monte. When Columbia released the TV show to DVD, they invited no surviving cast members to participate in extras.
It’s not racism, it’s theft. This happens all the time in the industry. He should’ve started with the lawyers first, formed the production company, gotten contracts together, then bothered with agents and studios. Creatives are always taken advantage of.
George Jefferson was one of the greatest TV characters ever. He deserved MTM Enterprises-level writing, not to be stuck being shamed with gaslighting “you’re no better” false equivalences at a glorified grindhouse like Embassy, whose only hits after 1977 didn’t even credit Norman Lear at all. *Diff’rent Strokes, The Facts of Life, Silver Spoons, 227,* and especially *Married with Children* make me question whether Norman Lear was integral to the success of anything his name was actually attached to. He wasn’t credited on any of them, but every TV show that actually had his name in the credits concurrent with those five shows was a bomb. Notice how virtually nobody remembers *Palmerstown USA, aka Pablo,* or *Sunday Dinner,* and how at the twilight of his life, nobody in Hollywood wanted anything from him but rehashes of the same old same old when the OGs are still in reruns and mostly on DVD and have had the unfair advantage of never having to compete with *Amos ‘n’ Andy* in syndication or on anything remotely resembling a level playing field.
It is interesting that he never received credit for anything to do with the Jeffersons. According to his Wiki page, he wrote the script for 'All in the Family' that introduced the Jefferson characters in 1971 but according to the show's credits and IMDb, it was Jerry Mayer. But in his IMDb bio, it does say he successfully sued Norman Lear in 1977 for stealing his ideas (including The Jeffersons, Good Times and What's Happening) and won $1,000,000. Considering these show's legacies, that doesn't seem hardly enough. I'm not sure this makes Norman Lear a racist, per se, but it certainly makes him a sleazy businessman.
@@theotheleo6830 You clearly have no idea who Eric Monte is.... There would be no Jefferson's, Good Times, Sanford & Son, Cooley High, What's Happening without Eric Monte. Cooley High is based on his life story growing up in Cabrini Green. He deserves more than some damn credit...

Speaking as Mr. Monte, Weintraub's supposed to be _my_ agent, but he's also representing Turteltaub and Orenstein. Weintraub threw Monte under the bus by signing the rights to the production company formed by Turteltaub, Orenstein, Yorkin, and Lear knowing full well Monte didn't want to do business with Lear after the Jeffersons deal. Everything after that happens as a result of Weintraub's original agency violation. Normal Lear couldn't have stolen the idea if Weintraub didn't steal it first by conspiring to sell out Monte.

@@theotheleo6830The spinoff supporting characters were the product of Nicholl, Ross, and West, the same people who left to work for Don Taffner on *Three’s Company.* Taffner was also the first to syndicate *The Benny Hill Show* in the US, and the money from the UK-adapted ABC sitcom made that possible. No wonder NBC was willing to gamble on *Gimme A Break!* It wasn’t based on a British show and it wasn’t produced by Norman Lear, just the producers who took over AitF (Mort Lachman) and *The Jeffersons* (Sy Rosen) after NRW left Lear for Taffner. But they showed Lear was nothing without his collaborators and business partners. Could he have run Tandem without Bud Yorkin? The name of the company is literally “a bicycle built for two,” just like HAL sang in *2001: A Space Odyssey* but without Kubrick’s mastery of the technical aspects of filmmaking, or even film! He certainly couldn’t have bought out Embassy without the assistance Jerry Perenchio. Eric Monte screwed himself because of his own inexperience and greed. He wanted to own the show What's Happening. But very few get that privilege. It takes decades, regardless of your race, to get to a position where you can own the rights to a TV show. He worked as a TV writer for about 3 years or so, and wanted to reach a position that took Norman Lear and others decades to achieve. Eric should have been happy with the "created by" credit. That alone would have netted him millions for a hit show. But he instead sued, and had to settle for $1 million. A third goes to the lawyers, and he squandered the rest from a drug addiction. He needs to own up to his mistakes and stop blaming others.
In reality, ALL of us have some racist tendencies. Including this guy here. Also including everyone commenting on this, and everyone you and I come in contact with every single day. He said several times he had "proof" that he created George and Louise Jefferson's characters? Also, the other two shows? What is the proof? I find it VERY, VERY hard to believe that IF he in fact had "the proof and the evidence" as he said multiple times in this clip than NO lawyer in the whole "town" of Los Angeles would take the case?????????? Nope. He said himself he sued ABC. He also agreed to the million dollar settlement and the time was one week before - as HE says, the "statue" of limitations would expire - LOL. "How The *(Ethnic Group Name Here)* Created Hollywood"* .. It's a really good read, it explains everything about who created Hollywood, t expounds upon everything that he's describing about his own compelling story that speaks of how tthe power structure was created, how that hierarchy is maintained keeping the elites and their heirs at the top of that hierarchy. Making iit nearly impossible for anyone not already somehow affiliated with Hollywood productions unable to break in and create something that can't be ripped off by those that created the system. Nobody would take the case because it wouldn't be very advantageous for any law frim to take on the Hollywood elites that keep every law firm in that town in business. Taking on the Hollywood big wigs basically guarantees that law firm's demise, whether his case is won or not. That kind of win only solidfies that his solicitors and their firm's representatives will be unemployed for the foreseeable future. A win for him, is a loss that his representatives would never recover from, That's sad, not to mention unfair.

THIS IS A HATE CRIME AGAINST BLACK AMERICANS... NO OTHER RACE WOULD ALLOW THIS.. WOULD EUROPEAN JEWS ALLOW RACIST STEREOTYPES MADE INTO A NETFLIX SERIES... I THINK NOT.
It’s time to put a stop to this ANTI-BLACK Propaganda Racist Hate Crime By Netflix. This will lead to bad outcomes towards black people period. It will promote more hate, police brutalities as it reinforces the DEHUMANIZATION of a whole people like they did during the Jim Crow Era which lead to mass killings of innocent black Americans.

Norman Lear is the exact kind of white liberal wolf that Malcolm X warned about. If you want to really deep dive into Lear, find Tim Kelly’s podcast.
He was done wrong by Orenstein, Weintraub, Lear, etc.. does anyone notice the common denominator there?

What’s even worse is that people still believe the narrative once it has been discredited. They even give Lear credit for shows he had nothing to do with. I still have to point out to UA-cam video documentarians how many shows were made by his collaborators without him. Frankly, those hold up better.
Cooley High is still an awesome movie to this day, better than American Graffiti I think
I never knew what’s happening was based off of Cooley High. That makes sense.
The movie got a Criterion Collection Blu-ray edition, and everybody from it who was still alive was invited to participate in the creation of extras. Everyone, that is, except for Eric Monte.
When Columbia released the TV show to DVD, they invited no surviving cast members to participate in extras.
I wish he could sue the estate..
It’s not racism, it’s theft. This happens all the time in the industry. He should’ve started with the lawyers first, formed the production company, gotten contracts together, then bothered with agents and studios. Creatives are always taken advantage of.
Yeah not to say racism didn't
Exist back then, but people
Nowadays use that to explain
Everything, it makes it hard
To take people seriously.
Not only did they screw Eric Monte they did the same thing to Mike Evans of the Jefferson.
I heard show business was cutthroat. Didn’t know it was this bad. I hope mr. Monte gets the justice he deserves.

💡Kanye said that European Jews weren't doing good business with him they called him antisemitic.
Wow. Thanks for sharing. This has been so relevant
So he wrote one script for the show and he thinks he deserves credit for the entire show? Something ain't right here.
@@theotheleo6830 When you write _the first_ script for a show which serves as the basis for _the entire_ show, you deserve credit and consideration for the lifetime of that show. Would I call Norman Lear a racist? Not based on what was described here. The first person I would lash out against is Bernie Weintraub.
@@NeilTruick He didn't write the first script for the Jeffersons. He wrote one script for All In The Family, which introduced the Jeffersons characters. He didn't create the show.

Nope. He said himself he sued ABC. He also agreed to the million dollar settlement and the time was one week before - as HE says, the "statue" of limitations would expire - LOL. Dude, YOU screwed up and you were taken and it's NOT because anyone else is or was racist. YOU took some bad advice and YOU were not sophisticated enough to look out for yourself. Not good.

They've got that entire entertainment industry on lockdown.
They're dedicating to exploiting Black talent.
Going into the game, should have known it was rigged & fixed from the jump. To expect anything else, from the start or end, is foolhearty.
"What's Happening" has no resemblance to "Cooley High". Do you see any Rerun or Dee in "Cooley High"?
The original pilot is on IMDB, Roger's character was Preach. The network thought the content was too deep and dramatic and retooled it into the comedy sitcom and renamed/ re-casted the show.
Yeah... you got railroaded. Norman doesn't seem so virtuous to me now. You called him many things ... you forgot GREEDY
Welcome to show "business." Double-dealing, backstabbing attorneys, agents, studios, etc. are par for the course. The issue is that people are naive. And don't have a good lawyer.
Likewise in the music industry. Don't you dare sign that contract without reviewing it with a microscope.
Lear, Turtletaub, Weinstein, Orenstein, Weintraub and your lawyers all had something in common, hmm but what could it be? I can't put my finger on it.
Just plain evil. I never knew...
It's not evil, it's the product of the times.
Norman lear was a greedy executive....not a racist...eric got played and has sour grapes
Lots of white people have been deprived their due and credits also
Yep it's not a race thing.
What a decent man.
No no no.....we're taught and asked not to pull the race card.
Because race doesn't always have
To do with everything.
Preach🎉
"I should'a got whatever I wanted." But since Norman Lear didn't give it to him; therefore, he is a racist.
Racism isn't dead, but on life support used by politicians
Race baiters & those who
Get moral superiority of
Denouncing others as
Racists- Thomas sowell.
Kenneth Williams is his birth name so glad 2 hear his story..
All of a sudden banned Michael Jackson lyrics come to mind.
Oscar Hammerstein II has left the building.
Thank you for the video. It's always good to get the behind the curtin truth. Hats off to the black actors had to endure racism from whites and jews.
people back then of every race
Endured that, it wasn't just one
Race who dealt with that.
He didn’t pretend nothing, Lear was fn snake, typical we create and they take
He's not the only one who says so ! Demond Wilson from Sanford & Son said the same thing.
He should have went with black attorney's from the onset
A certain type of jew will always ride on back of others.
