I've lived in view of Mount Wilson my entire life but I never climbed it, and didn't even know there was a trail for the longest time. When I was a kid I used to live where I had a good view of it outside my living room window and one winter it was filled with snow, it was so beautiful. Wish I had known back then there was a hiking trail up there. Seeing this really makes me want to take a hike up there, better late than never! I think I found the perfect use for my new hiking boots! :D
Thanks for the memory. In 1955 I was a junior in Monrovia High School. Three friends and I drove to Chantry Flats and climbed to Mt. Wilson, but it was so foggy as we reached what we thought was the top we headed back down....Today I huff and puff going upstairs
My family from Sierra Madre.i hiked this trail alone up and down one day and threw up.harder than you think it is.didnt know there was another route.proud you guys visited the foothills.the area one if original areas to be surveyed.
I really like Thomas videos, hope there will be more in the future too, they are really welcomed between the longer episodes! Anyway, wish you all guys the best!
Thanks so much! Hopefully he can find some time to do some hikes out in Cali soon - he just got a new job so I think he's been pretty busy with that. Thanks for watching :) -Andrew
Ive hiked just about every notable Peak in the San Gabriels from Echo Mt to Baldy. I always avoided Wilson because i knew it was flooded with crowds. I just completed it today for the first time from sierra madre I'll definitely do it again.
Thomas, I really enjoyed this video. The Chantry Flats footage was from an area of the Angeles Forest that I hiked as a teen with a group from my high school led by a rather famous explorer named John Goddard who lived not far from here back in those days. I remember the narrow trail and a stream down below. There is some beautiful scenery in the Angeles Forest.
Thanks for your video!! My husband and I did the trail until sturventant camp only 4.3m. Our goal is Mount Wilson seeing your video make our decision to do it next week 💪🏽💪🏽
Nice work Thomas and Allie! We're very fortunate up here in New England. Winter hiking is extremely popular which keeps up in shape for the summer season. Plus, if something goes wrong, you get a very expensive helicopter ride back down!
+Scott Dunbar I've always wanted to do some winter hiking in New England! I've seen someone get airlifted out and I was not jealous of that trip. Have fun out there and be safe! - Thomas
Thank you for your video. This might be a video that you can show the posterity of what the trail looks like before the Bobcat fire. I was lucky enough to go to the top of Mt. Wilson via three different paths. One is by Wilson Toll Road (starting from Eaton Canyon), one is by Mt. Wilson Trail, one by Chantry Flat. For the Chantry flat, I was planning on taking the lower Winter Creek Trail, but ended up doing upper Winter Creek trail the entire way. Both Mt. Wilson Trail and Upper Winter Creek Trail are super strenuous. Because I went by Upper winter Creek, I didn't get to see the Sturtevant Fall and that hike added extra 2-3 miles. I am planning on going via the path you took this coming winter/spring. We shall see.
Beautiful video...from where I live I see mount baldy everyday...and even though I did baldy a month ago I still look at it as though I've never done it. ..next is mount wilson...
Congrats on going all the way! Love the amusing video commentary. Like a lazy person, I just stick to Sturtevant Falls and drive all the way to Mount Wilson from the Los Angeles Crest Highway.
I've taken my girls (and my dog) on the shorter hike to the waterfall several times and we all love it! Would love to try this but doesn't look too kid/dog friendly, glad I watched the video. Thanks for sharing, loved the footage!
Thanks so much for watching! I believe there's also a road or at least an easier path that gets to the top if you still wanted to reach it. Cheers :) -Andrew
Thanks for the tip! We went back to Sturtevant Falls this past Sunday and there was a LOT more water this time thanks to all the recent rain. My girls want to go back again next Sunday and check out the Chantry Falls...have you been there? I know it's a shorter distance but not sure about the terrain of the trail to it.
Great Video! You should also try hiking Mt. Wilson via the Devore Trail Loop. This one is over 11 miles long, starts at the summit, descends to West Fork Camp, follows the San Gabriel River, then goes straight up the Gabrielieno and Rim trails back to the top! Challenging but some places by the river and especially at the Rim trail are definitely worth it.
+Andrey Marsavin I've heard of it and I'll definitely have to check it out! This one was about 14 miles long, but after a certain elevation, we lost the creek we were following. I'd love to see the San Gabriel River though, I don't think I've made it there yet. --Thomas
I've hiked the same route and I ate about dozens of gnats as well, such a beautiful hike but getting there early is key as the parking lot fills up quick
+smetlogik Haha, its not quite as rewarding when you reach the top and you see tons of families running out of their minivans. Thanks for tuning in! --Thomas
I've been in bed sick this weekend and enjoying this channel. I don't really hike/camp much anymore but interested in getting back into it. Thanks for sharing. If you can tell me what kind of boots the gal is wearing that'd be great.
+SoCal Hiker Whoa, thank you for checking out the video and commenting! We all love your blog, though unfortunately the rest of us don't get to hike around SoCal as often as Thomas, haha. Thanks again for watching! -Andrew
Ha! once you get a mile away from the trail head, you typically have the park to yourself. At least that is how it happens here in hot old Texas. Good video dude. You guys do well together. Keep it up AA!!!!!! Then get your butts to Texas.
My friend and I are looking to do this hike...how much training is necessary? We both hike pretty regularly, but tend to stick to 5-7 mile hikes. We're in good shape, but hiking is definitely a different kind of activity
+Emma Z it can be a tougher hike but there are definitely some good areas you can turn back at if you feel like it! My biggest suggestion is get there EARLY! Chantry Flats fills up around 7AM on the weekends. Thanks for Watching!
Dude you started at Chantry Flats,,the ez path. Last week, Chantry flats was closed and i started all the way at the bottom of the trailhead..stop bitching about the hike lol

Enjoyed the journey. Beautiful scenery and views.
I've been waiting for this vid. I love chantry. One of the best cheeseburgers I've had was from chantry after hiking all day. Awesome vid Thomas.

Good idea to take a few warm up hikes. I plan to do the same up here around Toledo Ohio. No mountains for me yet but you can keep them coming.

That hike got serious real quick!
I'm hiking it this Sunday! Super excited!! It should be GREEN after all this rain in LA :)
Awesome! I was thinking of doing the same! Though watch out as you get closer. I imagine there is a bit of snow near the top of Mt. Wilson
In any case, great to see you and Ally out again..
+hoobilly 65 Thanks for watching Hoobilly! Always great to hear from you! --Thomas

fantastic video clip.
Very good video hiking up to the summit of Mt. Wilson. What was the elevation gain from the trailhead to the summit?
Awesome video!

Nice, loved watching it on my new HP laptop, lol... Makes me wish I lives in CA!
+hoobilly 65 CA has its benefits! Except how expensive everything is...
+AdventureArchives I can vouch for this.
How easy is it to figure out where to go. If I can’t read a map or gps do I need to hire a guide? Or could I just follow everyone else?
awesome video 👊🏽👊🏽
you should do an overnighter at cooper canyon trail camp via the Burkhart trail from buckhorn. It would make a great video
+Jonathan López I've never heard of Cooper Canyon but I'm looking it up now. Always looking for new places to hike. Thanks! --Thomas
Finally caught up to this one. Great job Thomas.
