The way to practice is to do a simple up/down strumming pattern and change chord on the final upstroke, which will be an open strings strum. Practice this until you can do it without thinking. P.S. When I was learning tremolo all I did on the guitar was change between Am and Em for hours at a time. Some parts of learning the aren't fun and can be boring. You just have to keep in mind where you want to end up.
