When I heard about the surveillance balloon I knew it was Sean’s doing
Got my eyes everywhere
Sean you are a man’s man when it comes to teachers. Don’t tell my boss, but 6ish if the 9 hours when I’m at work is spent hiding behind carts in a warehouse consuming your content to better myself. I’m 21 years into playing guitar & still learning, I pray my thirst for knowledge never ceases.
I've come to find 10 years in of playing how important counting your playing is. This video really hits the nail on its head. Good job Sean!
Thanks so much!
Ok so I loved this video and started mixing up the counts between the cords and it sounded really nice. Doing a 7 count and then spltiing the next 7 count over the next 2 cords. I only started playing once I retired at 66 as something to keep my mind going, not the greatest guitar player but I discovered your lessons and they unlocked a lot of things for me. ( I did take lessons for 1.5yrs found out my instructor was in a metal band back in the 70/80's, saw a few of their music videos online)
Thanks for this. Just as important to know when to play as it is to know what to play. Great lesson!
you are hilarious, look forward to your introduction as much as the lesson! i've the last few weeks been hoping to find a lesson for 'never be boring' at strumming again! thanks for this lesson, haa haven't listened yet but i know it will be good🎸
Great lesson once again, found this so useful. Thank you
Hi Sean you had me in stitches love the way you bring in topical stuff such as the balloon... you also happen to be a great teacher... my guitar playing has improved immeasurably thanks to you... best David
Thanks for saying so David! I'll keep them coming!
Very informative lesson, and challenging. :) Thank you.
These are great thanks!
From one guitar teacher to another - thank you, this was hilarious and very relatable.
I concur with your sponsorship by Elixir Strings because they are simply the best guitar strings on the market!
A friend told me about them and now there'll all I use!
Great lesson❤
Thank you for this. I always thought i was doing something wrong whenever i would triple strum and find my hand going up on a beat.
Chrono Trigger! My guy!
Sean you are awesome! Love the way you explain things.
Thanks so much!
Yes thank You, i wondered about this you're doing good 👍 dynamics l
I'm not a great guitar player at all. Didn't start playing until I was 55, am now 61 and still trying. Bottomline, I really find your videos so entertaining if many times I'm clueless. I really respect you for your life journey and really appreciate you sharing your life with us. Hoping your female vocalist friends can rejoin you from time to time, as the songs you all make are so nice. Best of luck in LA!
Thanks so much for the kind words! Glad you're enjoying the videos!
And that is how you layer style onto guitar playing. Transformed me from a beginner to an intermediate guitarist in one video
I love and only play Elixir light strings on my Martin GPCX2E. I used to play a long time ago but had to take 16 years off because my wife got Daily Persistent Migraines the night she gave birth to our 1st son. 16 years later I’m play again at age 48. I’m not putting this guitar down again and only use Elixir strings now and the 4 years I played before my hiatus
Excellent content as always. Best of UA-cam!
Thanks so much!
So ironic. This past week while driving to and from work while listening to the radio, I was figuring out the time signatures to different songs. Some easy, some not. Like, Tool, Soundgarden or some VH songs.
It's so cool, to have a lesson on timing.
Thanks.
Oh Tool is quite the exercise for this
That is a fantastic lesson!
Glad it was helpful!
Fantastic lesson!
Thanks for saying so!
I'd love to see a vid about rests. I don't mean muting/damping, but actually strumming counts of *_silence_* as a rhythmic device. It's a topic a lot of YT guitar teachers shy away from.
Sean Daniel, the Master of dry humor ! Love your channel :)
you are awesome thank you
You are such a great teacher
Thanks so much!
That e major 7 is new to me. I tried it on Muskrat Love by America. Awesome. Thanks, studio looks nice.
Thanks so much! It's a great chord!
Great lesson Sean.
I watched this out of interest more than anything melse.
I have worked on my strumming.
However I now know another major 7th shape.
There is always something to learn.
I love your lessons.
Some of the theory still goes over my head but if little bits stick with me as I go along ...
Can never get enough major 7 shapes!
Thank you for the enjoyable, informative lesson. I'm not familiar with those chrds. I'm more used to chirds in 1st positions/ 1st 3 frets.... Learning.
Excellent content, Sean! Welcome to Cali!
Thanks so much!
I NEEd this Man ! Thanks sean ! Ol West
Happy to help!
You the man Sean🤪
I encountered those strumming in some songs of the beatles😬, and the most difficult one is the "all my loving".
Great lesson, Sean, and very timely for me, as I've been trying to teach myself more rhythm playing. One follow-up question - if you were to set up simple drum patterns to accompany these five strumming exercises, how would you set them up? Just put the kicks and snares on the strummed beats, or are there more elegant (perhaps?) approaches?
Great question. Setting up a drum beat you'd definitely want to program accent with the kick and snare to match the vibe. Might have to do a video on this!
@@seandaniel23 Please, that would be awesome!
I think this is a great lesson. I really get confused about this one strumming pattern. Like for inxs "never tear us apart" could you please show how to strum that song. For that particular strumming pattern
Thank u 🫡
Thanks for watching!
Now that you explained it, it does make more sense to use numbers rather than down-up.
You know it, Joe!
Nice !
Thanks so much!
I loved the balloon joke ... made me realize I've watched enough of your videos that I should subscribe. Sorry i'm late.
welcome to the party!
Hey Sean Quick question. If you were going to play lead over that, what key would you be thinking.. Thanks!
Stopped using picks awhile back, so the whole triplet thing is simplified by: [open fingers strum, thumb strum, close fingers strum]. Less confusion re. downbeat stroke direction. Still, not a bad thing to practice switching, for example when breaking 4/4 up as: [tripolet, tripolet, tripolet, 4, &] ("sun sun sun here it comes"). Especially when carrying over two measures: [tripolet, tripolet, tripolet, tripo], [let, tripolet, tripolet, 7, &, 8, &]. If you want that strong bass note on 1, change up the order: [thumb strum, close fingers strum, open fingers strum], to avoid digit collisions. Shout out to Mother Maybelle, and flamenco players!
Wow light bulb moment,,, thanks, I will explore your patreon 🤟🤟✌️✌️
Thanks so much!
Your a scream bud.Comedian..brillient .Top teacher.
Thanks so much!
One other small tip here is to mute all the strings and get the strumming patterns and timing down before you form actual chords. Especially chords you may not be familiar enough with up the neck to grab and play in time without some practice. Also it is helpful to practice with a metronome so one doesn’t speed up while playing.
I am certain this is a dumb question but would you play those different counts in the same 4/4 timing as the rest of the band/song? Or are you saying that the song would need to be in a "matched" timing? I'm new to music but love learning so forgive my ignorance. I never had music in school.
The song would have to be in that timing otherwise the timing would be all out of sync.
I have 11 year old elixirs on my electric guitar still work just fine
There is no need to go Music Academy to be the master in guitar playing.
You should listen and practice what Daniel is presenting in clever and easy to catch way.
Thanks for sharing
That's a big ukulele!
Sure is!
After some beers... Tip: It's best to use a very simple chord progression to illustrate strumming patterns. In fact, it's difficult to concentrate on strumming if you still have to think about how to make the chords.
The drummer comment at 9:09! 😂
🤘✔️
So the foundation of what your saying is: the pattern is Down Down Up Down Down or Down Down Down Up Down Down.
Got it!!
Does it feel good to be back in Florida? I live in San Diego. I’m from Tucson though. I went to Stetson for law school in St. Pete. That’s a cool area. Good luck on your bicoastal endeavor. You should make enough to keep living in LA with your guitar income. I’m looking to be in South Florida part of the time because I like the area. I have a J.D. but I’m not an attorney, so I don’t have that attorney money coming in. LOL
South FL is a great spot, just a lot more opportunities here, you can't go wrong either way!
nice video... but sitting here, wistfully thinking about the good ol' days... back when you'd have kendrid and ched k. pao on the couch... maybe a katie, or a hannah... not to mention a drea-like participant.
just missing the old guard.
We’ve got a Hannah vid coming soon!

Syncopation - Music Theory Academy
Syncopation Definition. Syncopation is the accenting of a note which would usually not be accented. Syncopation is often described as being off beat. The time signature of a piece of music gives an indication of a regular pattern of strong and weak beats. A syncopated rhythm goes against this pattern by putting the accent on weak beats.. Let me explain through a worked example.
It's weird , I've been playing for years and never counted cause I sing at the same time, so sometimes my one would be on the up stroke
Kinda happened playing horse with no name by America...kinda tricky to sing and play at the same time
One take master.😜
not the surveillance balloon 😂
Here's a video idea. You do a fairly easy chord progression/lick on guitar and have your subscribers do the lyrics and singing to it. I can sing. I'd do it.
And maybe whoever does the best vocals wins a prize. Just trying to give ya some ideas man
@@MikeG691 music is not a competition.
Up Up Down Down Left Right Up Left Down....Cheat code for strumming!
Your balloon got away, and your balloon was shot down.
I heard. :0
Why isn't there an Elixer jingle?
this might need to happen.
I do actually own a 2018 CX5
Mazda buddies!
@@seandaniel23 great car! Love it!
Hit that like button
Smash it!
The 1st one made me think of Neil Young
thank you for using actual counts not downs and ups! drives me nuts when i see a strumming pattern written out as DDUUDU, that means literally nothing! (same thing with dancers, actual counts are soooo much clearer)
After analyzing your balloon the White House staff are all sitting around learning guitar 🎸
Great lesson. "I swear to God....." @ 4:10 is quite hilarious. The 'down, down, up' stuff he is ridiculing is indeed rational. Any Andy Guitar followers here??!!🤭
You like texas?
Strumming has always been my problem
#2. 5:32
Sean kinda looks like Tom Brady if Tom was good at guitar instead of football
Down, down, down - up, down - up.
Right?
Might get hate for it, but i really don't think any new guitar player should worry that much about strumming patterns. You have to just kind of feel the rhythm. It's too much to think about in the beginning.
D DU DU D D D
The balloon has been kia 1 usa 0 china
Lol. About that balloon. Smh
3 times I tried to nail the first chord you started on... but you talked so fast even with play backs I finally gave up
Dude! Pretty harsh on the drummers!! Lol!! Why so salty?
All in good fun :)
First
:)
Sorry to hear about your balloon...
Myself…I couldn’t count each strum like…down down up down up up down up. Than to remember all that. Nope couldn’t do it. I can strum a song naturally thou. I believe it should come naturally and if you practice enuff you will see. Be better than next guy and practice
So sad, they shot your balloon down😑
Is this a lesson or commercial....yeah, I'm kicked out...
too long
Not impressive at all...
BORING!!
