If there is one thing i have learned from playing a guitar (i am a beginner my self, just under 1 year now), is that it is the same as training or bodybuilding. Never get discouraged, keep training, keep trying and the results shall slowly but surely come in. Take your time, never compare yourself to anyone else and watch how the reuslts come in. Good job!
For right hand speed I pick as fast as I can for 30 second every note on an electric guitar. That is approximately one hour. Play as fast but as clean as you can. Every thing I do is for one hour. After 45 minutes you have no fear. I hope you get better. Playing guitar is fun. You got a subscriber.🎉
I have played guitar from 1993 and I still incorporate this type of exercise for better finger control. Very interesting video that shows the actual growth in dexterity and precision from one exercise. Keep up the good work.
Thanks for uploading this! I've been playing about a month, and am just now hearing about this exercise, but I think this is exactly what I need to gain independent control of my fingers when playing.
OK.... I'm 69. never played guitar before, brought an electric guitar in April but started to learn in June because. of work, it's now october, my spider work is not good but im going to try your method, so as of tomorrow, (10 October 2024) I will practice every day for 30 days, (9 November 2024) about 10-15. minutes on the spider plus learding chords, I'll let you know what the progress is...
crazy when i saw his results first on day 15 i was like oh this isnt much of an improvement, but then he started speeding up, and he kept going faster and faster and i was like oh damn ok. by the end i can see thats a huge improvement tops to you bro
one of Megadeth’s songs play something like this. i practiced for 3 hours everyday for 2 months. i mastered it but developed tennis elbow. rest every 45 minutes to avoid injury.
I see you went from a pick to finger picking in the end. My accuracy is horrible with a pick and I do the same. I finger pick most of the songs I play.
I played the guitar when I was about 17, 18 years old. Just for a couple of years. Back in the days (nineties) there was no internet, and (I thought) I couldn't afford a good guitar teacher. All I had, were some tabs from guitar magazines (Clapton, Guns 'n Roses, etc.). I was struggling. I thought I was a lousy player. I thought I had no talent. My buddy played much better than me. I thought he had talent (turns out, he did not have talent, he had a good teacher). I didn't like my guitar. I stuffed it away, in the attic, for over 25 years. Fast forward 25 years. Three months ago I picked up my guitar again. Inspired by countless UA-cam movies and a Guitareo subscription I am enjoying it like never before. And I'm making actual progress. I found some other videos on the 'Spider Walk', been practicing it for a couple of weeks now. I'm improving, but slowly. Probably because I'm not consistent enough. Videos like these are the greatest inspiration to just keep playing no matter what. There is no such thing as talent. Only dedication, discipline, hard work. If you can achieve this in a month, what's possible in a year? And in 5 years?! Videos like these make me believe that I too, can become a great guitar player. All I need is (more) discipline. And I will start today 😎🎸.
Thanks for the nice comment. Hard work and consistency definitely pays off, and it makes up for a lack of 'talent'. And yes, these days the resources are much better than some old books. Good luck with your guitar journey. It would be nice to hear an update from you!
I think you should spend most of your time on chord changes, but the spider walk exercise is still a good exercise, perhaps use it as a warmup for a couple of minutes.
This is coming from someone that has very little skill on the guitar so take this for what it’s worth😂😅. But I think it would definitely be worth it if your how I was in the beginning. Just training all of the fingers to get used to touching and holding down strings. And more importantly without any buzz. But that’s my opinion. Again I’m not super experienced by any means. That is just what got me started and really actually progressing.
If you want to play leads, jazz or a lot of blues, do this…also try it with metronome, boring stuff…monotonous but you’ll thank yourself later the path
This has happened to me to! I am 13 and my hands aren't big so what i do is shift my hand a little to hit the right notes, it is my day 4... and i have seen big improvements that i am really proud of since day 1.
@@RitmoAcustico Thanks man! This is the first time I am getting a reply on my comment from a UA-cam user and a UA-camr. And you will also be a great guitarist one day!
I always try to reply to people, it's the least I can do if they watch my video. Yeah I hope I'll be a great guitarist haha, I just wish I never stopped playing. Let me know how your progress goes man! Pleasure to meet you.
thanks for the video man. I'll definitely try this Also can you give me some advice or tips? I bought my guitar like two years ago but only recently got motivation to practice more and finally learned the basic chords like Am, Em, G,D, C, F (or Fmaj7). I still don't know much theory or whatever arpeggios are, and so aside from just practicing more songs, what should I try to learn next? I wish I could afford a teacher, but since I can't it would be really helpful if you could recommend some videos or channels that might help me out from here
Hey man. Your Guitar Academy and Justin Guitar are 2 good free options. They have entire courses for free. That should teach you some basics and theory. And definitely keep practicing songs you like!
okay after 10-20 mins a day practicing this, and then what do u do? I only learn new songs and couldnt really catch up with my skill level. So i figure doing this would definitely help me learn songs faster
Yeah I do think the finger dexterity you get from this helps your playing in general. Of course there are other important things as well, but I was happy with my results from this.
Wow! How much time did you practise every day? It would be interesting to know. It's tough to find more than 15 minutes every day, of course some days more time is easy to find!
About 10 minutes. Some days a little more, some days a little less. Try what you can! I think consistency is the most important thing. I rather practice something 5 minutes a day every day, than spend an hour once a week.
Nice progress. It's much easier to play SCoM if you learn to barre the 12th fret with your first finger and barre the 14th fret with your ring finger. Less finger movement and shifting around that way. Your spider monkey method of playing and fretting all the notes with your finger tips looks tough. Learning to barre and play with the flats of your fingers instead of always using the tips and learning to "fat finger" your fretted notes to help keep surrounding open strings mute and being able to roll your finger from the flat to the tip to catch an upper string instead of lifting and moving your finger should also help with conserving extra movement and increase speed.
Yo make sure to adjust your wrist so its flat like Paul Davids'. It makes sense at first to avoid hitting other strings but if you play standing up your wrist ends up at a right angle. Super uncomfortable and you can't play for very long. Solid work though man, keep it up!
You're right. I feel like my mobility in my hand/fingers is slowly improving though, so I don't have to hold my wrist in an awkward position as to not mute the strings.
Thanks, also when starting at the top I have trouble touching lower strings with lower part of my fingers. Did this happen to u. And is it ok because I'm not playing lower strings at that precise moment. What's ur advice ? Thanks in advance. Good job btw bro.
@@hhhh-bn3of In the beginning I was muting all the strings, because I couldn't put the tip of my finger on the strings. I think your finger dexterity and flexibility will improve if you stick with it. I'd say don't worry about the speed first but focus on precision. Speed will come later. And thanks!
it was he was just essentially playing whole notes. normally you play eighths and then youd be going like 4 times as fast. I think that is why you think its not 240.
This exercise isn’t teaching you anything. Practice all twelve major scales in the ‘open’ and five CAGED positions. These twelve scales and CAGED positions will be the only unique finger movements you will ever need on the guitar. Everything else is the same or derived from these twelve major scales and CAGED positions; but, either, from a different starting note within the scale and/or using fewer notes from the scale - giving you all the other scales (minor, blues, pentatonic, modes, etc.), as well as all the chords within the scale mode. You do not need anything else to play the guitar to the highest level.
you look REALLY uncomfortable and appear to be sitting all wrong dude? Don't rest your left arm on your leg and you might be more comfortable resting the guitar on your other leg? This brings the fretboard nearer to your centre
It's not completely useless. Especially if you mix it up like he did in the end. It teaches finger independence and timing. It can even help accuracy when you step it up like he did. I've been playing over 30 years and I still do these "beginner" exercises to warm up.
you made this exercise wrong, this is no exercise if you learning how to play on guitar like practice this excercise, put your guitar to trash bin or sell it. Spider is basics if you want play good but not played like you, look for others how they do that and main thing-slow down 90% with exercises-that give you better accuracy, speed is not everything if you have no accuracy to play fast licks solos riffs etc.
Yeah I'm just slowly trying to improve man. I made plenty of mistakes and I'm sure I will make many more. Most of my time is spent learning songs, and a small part on exercises.
I was blocking the strings at first too. Maybe try curling your wrist or fingers a little more? And just practicing this exercise helped me out a lot. But the pinky is definitely the weakest finger, I can't get it to move the way I want to all the time either, a longer finger would be really useful lol.
