Andy , your an excellent teacher! As a older beginner ( 63 years old ) you make it so simple and easy to want to learn more. Your videos have been so benefital through the past 2+ years of this pandemic, as face to face lessons have not been available. Keep up the great work! Looking forward to yet more inspirational video's from you. Thanks again ! From a fan of yours watching you from Caledon Ontario, Canada.
I'm brand new to guitar and have watched a lot of different channels and their tutorials and I always come back to yours, your instructions are really clear and you explain things so well. Brilliant content mate, thank you for what you do 👏
Just a comment from someone who starred learning from a book when I was in my early 20's... I was so thrilled when I finally got to where I could play enough chords to play a few songs that I could sing and play to. Saying that, I learned a lot of bad habits or didn't learn the basic things that you are able to add on to. I'm 54 now and for the last year or so I've gone back and started learning the correct way from people like Andy, who is so good at teaching the building blocks and fundamentals to help advance in playing. There was no UA-cam back then, if anyone was wondering? Lol. Thanks, Andy!
I watched so many videos about strumming because mine sounded so bad even though my guitar is in tune but none of them helped me. After watching yours my strumming became way better after a bit of practice. Thank you for your help.
This really helped me. I have been playing the guitar for a little over a year and couldn’t figure out why my guitar sounded so “metal” and boring. You have really helped me. Thank you. I pray God blesses you double.
Same here. Learning since September 7th,2023 I'm really not satisfied with my level of progress vs how much I've put in to daily study. I'm thinking I need a better guitar. I only have an Abilene. Pon shop special. It's very pretty white /creme with hints of yellow like cowgirl designer boots, but I'm not hearing songs lol. Do you play songs already ??
Thank you Andy. I have been playing for just over a year now and this is just the thing I need. Playing songs is one thing, making your own version of that song is another. Keep up the great work! 👏
I've been learning guitar with Andy for 2.5 years now. I decided to learn guitar after a serious motorcycle accident losing many bones and brain bleeds plus crushed my left hand and fingers. I decided to learn righthand as ive no wrist bones on left hand and strumming was so painful. Im now an advanced intermediate grade 6. Thanks to Andy abd the team. I can honestly say Andy Crowley is a true friend and an amazing teacher. Im a proud AAA member of Andy Guitar and hope to be playing on stage with Andy in the coming months in England and beyond. 💯❤️🎸🎸😎🤘👏
@angrynooblets34 I'm fighting to get back on one again. 3 years later and still not ready. Northern Ireland is all about bikes and road racing. So it's in our dna here. My views are that I was drinking myself to death, then got a bike and quit drinking. I'd rather take that risk any day, buddy.
Thanks for the tips. Another thing is to relax. When I was starting out I'd hold the guitar like it was a snake trying to bite me and my grip was very very tight....wasn't going to let that snake bite me. Then I relaxed, loosened my grip in BOTH hands and what ya know....things started to feel and sound better. Just relax and enjoy yourself...have fun and stay safe. 😎
Thanks Andy! This helps a lot. I started learning guitar a couple of weeks back. Teaching myself with some UA-cam videos. Have been stuck with a down up strumming for a week now. Couldn't get the right tone as the original song. And yes I have been strumming all the strings for both down and up which was also difficult to catch up the speed the tone needed. After seeing your video it made sense and with the top 3 and last 3 or 2 strings while strumming changed the whole dynamics of unpleasant sound to a beautiful music. Thank you so much for this! These kinds of tips are not available or shared by many in their video. Not just this video But I have been watching your other videos a lot which is definitely helping a lot of self taught beginners like me. It's very clear and easily understandable. Which also encourages me to go for the guitar everyday to learn something new rather than fed up and giving up. The beginners lessons that you posted like a decade back is very effective than many others I came around. Even after a decade of those posted videos, newbies like me are able to jump in and learn to play guitar with confidence. Which shows the quality of teaching you provide to the community. Thanks to you brother! ❤
Another thing that comes naturally to me is not playing the bottom string at all on the down strum and then playing it on the up strum. This works really well for a D chord and an A7sus4. Imagine Foo Fighters' Waiting on a War. Give it a go and hear for yourself.
Sometimes you get a penny just dropped moment - this was one of them - such a huge difference for an improver standard. PS I still wear the Let it B T-shirt love it. Thanks for all your tips and advice cheers
I don’t know, I hold the pick in different ways with different hand positioning and articulation changes with these variables, impacting voicing. I played right handed for 10 years and couldn’t comfortably hold a pick with my right hand so I held it mostly with two fingers pointing down and the thumb pad. Now I play left handed and hold it properly and I find there were benefits to holding the pick the way I did when playing right handed so I practice holding pick a number of ways.
Excellent video on what I call generic skills which can be applied to any song. I have been working on this for a while but you have speeded me up Andy.
Great tips and tricks andy,iv started to vary strumming, like from the wrist is much more controlled and faster, and the palm muting is brilliant,i use the slap strum on ben e kings song "stand by me"it has a great rthem for it,thanks again andy
When I started playing Hey Now by Oasis, I naturally found myself doing that thing with playing top three strings on down strums and bottom three with the ups!
Hey Andy, I’ve been playing for a number of years and have never felt very comfortable with the way my picking hand is displayed. For example, I tend to keep my middle, ring, and little fingers held out away from my palm when I’m strumming or picking. I noticed you curl these fingers back toward your palm. Does that feel more natural to you, and does that give you better control and ability to get a more pronounced sound ?
I was also taught (mid-60s) to roll my wrist, as apposed to swinging the whole arm at the elbow. I find it easier to kinda flick my wrist when I can't roll through. It's really consistent! Many of today's players over-strum their guitars and they loose the tempo. Maybe they're self-taught hard-rockers. Yikes!
Here's what I recommend watching first ua-cam.com/video/exWgjOXtoKw/v-deo.html Anything more specific I can make a video about in this area? Please do let me know!
There's nothing wrong with holding the pick with three fingers. Nice video anyway, strumming skills come with practice and with the inner feeling about the specific song.

You are on the right track, it’s a journey, Andy is very good.
Me to lol
He’s excellent at breaking things down for us beginners… I get the impression he would be very patient face to face too.
He's an excellent guitar teacher.😊😊

@@angrynooblets34 It was a jcb digger pulled out in front of me and took the whole road. I hit it at 58 mph.
@@MetalManTT jeez at least you survived 🙏I’m about to get a motorcycle and I’m low key scared

Never imagined about variation in tune one can do with such small change in play. Hats off man to your teaching.
Danke!
If ever I have a music related question on my mind, you always have the answer. This video has taught me a lot. Many thanks for all of your videos.

So true! This helped me advance my skills rapidly when you start loosening your hands (BOTH of them)! :)
Guy really knows how to explain things that beginners can interpret, keep making these videos man your helping me out so much

Best free stuff online. Learned a number of songs from Andy. Thank you for your vids.
i like where you said 'get there early' when changing chords, for some reason that sticks with me
Another thing that comes naturally to me is not playing the bottom string at all on the down strum and then playing it on the up strum. This works really well for a D chord and an A7sus4. Imagine Foo Fighters' Waiting on a War. Give it a go and hear for yourself.
This has to be the best guitar lesson I've seen till now
Thanks a lot man ❤
Ok when u said ur fretting hand plays to your strumming hand and not the other way around...you changed my life 😂❤🎉
That's the trick, now use it well! 🎸🤟

The "beginner" holding the pick with two fingers in the thumbnail is how Van Halen held the pick.
Hi Andy
Is there a core of say 12 chords
That will give me a platform
As an old beginner trying to improve
Many Thanks for your efforts and vids ✌🏼🌈

Does this work with electric too?
Thanks! :)
