I recently bought a Smith-Corona Electric (QWERTZ) with a return carriage lever. I really like the electric support at typing, BUT I really do need the satisfying slap at the end of the line. The Smith-Corona Electric is best of both worlds, I would say. So this one is really fun (but rather rare).

That's funny the Olivetti has a 'Safety' feature to stop the type bars from slamming into each other, whereas, oh, I don't know, my SCM 110 Electra from '72 says "Send it!" And with feeling, passion and Maximum Effort, I swear it can break a finger or two!
I put copy set to 10 on a single sheet and it does a great impersonation of a colt ACP .45!!! It's a vicious powered typewriter, the SCM looks at the safety machine Olivetti and Says, "Oh, that's cute."
The 110 is the fastest electric I've ever used, it's the first I've ever owned, but not the first I've ever used, and I thought the Olympia Report Deluxe sometimes called Report LX, I thought that was fast, but oh man, oh man, I can see why Smith Corona made a 200 series because the only thing that slows you down is the manual return, so the 210 and 220 with Power Return and the reason it recoils like an Abrams Tank on the battlefield of you desk, is to Keep Going Fast!
Hard on the motor I know but I'd like to own a power return SCM 210 / 220 some day.
The Olivetti strikes me as a more Office Machine because of that anit Jamb keyboard deactivation 'safety' feature, to help reduce wear and tear. A jamb on a manual isn't really that big of an issue but when you have a machine spinning so fast it kicks a type bar out and back in on half a second, that's some speed which over time too many strikes I'm sure will cause eventual damage to the type bars or more importantly to the type face or slugs themselves.
The Royal seems neat and honestly I'd like to know what Royal's problem was with Paper fingers, they rarely have them. But even still with our finer features they are good sturdy machines, the original Royal I'm talking about, like the '68 Aristocrat Special I have, you could murder someone with it, and then use the typewriter to write about how you did it and the machine would be fine. It's so heavy lol portable, Okay, he grunts through his teeth! It's all steel even the plastic keys think they're steel as it's such a heavy pull on the keys.
I enjoy your videos as you know, but when that little pointer comes out, cracks me up, it's fun and effective, which I call, Effective Humor.
Thanks again, Joe you think I'll ever catch up? Lol I clock in about 6 a day, the approximate time my medicine starts to kick in. Thank you Again my friend.

Love this. I have an IBM Selectric II. It was my Mom’s. She loved it for work and home. Now I love it in her honor. I also have a Smith Corona Sterling that never gets used. I just can’t beat the productivity of that easy correction system of the IBM. Finally, there is an argument to be made that the Selectric is the greatest analog device ever invented.

The Selectrics were certainly the most complicated electro-mechanical typewriter, no doubt. Though IBM eventually supplanted them with the Wheelwriter series, that could do everything the Selectric could but also with digital document memory & correction.

That Olivetti is similar to my Olivetti Lettera e36 (originally purchased in 1982 for $192 Australian at Kmart (the original owner left the receipt in the case).

    Thanks for this video.
I still have a Royal Beta 8100 with a serial interface box. The interface lets it be used as a computer printer. True letter quality on a real piece of paper. Haven't used it in years, but if I really wanted to I could get it working. It really worked great for printing letters. I stopped at a office equipment repair place, who still works on the old stuff, and they thought the 8100 was one of the best typewriters Royal ever made.

Thanks for the review. Just found one of those Royal 1200s for $7 CDN! Having lots of fun with my first electric typewriter.

Love the Olivetti designs but I never cared for their cramped keyboards. You're right about them being too light to the touch for many people including me making that keyboard lock very irksome. I also have a Royal Academy with power return I'll have to dig out and see if it's similar to the one you're showing. I've not really used it much other than to put a new belt on but as I recall I was quite surprised how well it typed .

Interesting comparison. My IBM Selectric II is in the shop. Meanwhile, I’m enjoying my Brother SX-4000 and Smith Corona Wordsmith 100.

The Selectrics are amazing machines, but are maintenance-intensive. If properly cared for, those daisywheel typers can be very reliable.

Thank you Joe. Do you think you could do another writers shed video after all these years?

Perhaps! Although lately it's become overflow storage, the typical saga of a small house.

It appears that the Olivetti's keyboard requires one's wrist to be raised higher to reach it than the Royal. That might be a consideration for some people possibly.

Great point. Perhaps I need to do a video comparing ergonomics on these machines.

Question: I got an olivetti lettera 36 electric from the thrift store. (It looks like yours) I cleaned it (alot of yellow oily gunk was inside). It works well. But I noticed when the motor is running for awhile I'll start to hear a strange squeaking sound coming from the motor area. Do you know what this might be? Does it perhaps need oil? If so, what kind of oil? And where do I apply the oil?

    • @Joe_VanCleave
      @Joe_VanCleave  5 місяців тому

The bushings on the front and back of the motor’s rotor may need oiling. Try using sewing machine oil. Also the rotating shaft that the drive belts turn, that spins under the keys, they have bearings on both ends that could use oiling.
