Brand Name Products Vs. Generic Store Brands
I’m not saying some store brands don’t make good products but you have to be careful letting your dollar do the shopping for you. What’s on that food label always comes over the cost for me. I’m looking for added sugars, starches, types of oils used, etc. Many times you can see where budget brands are cutting corners (or even making it more addictive lol) when you carefully compare. You’re not just “filling a belly” when you buy food you’re investing in your health. Personally I prefer cooking everything myself from whole ingredients and avoiding too many processed or just add water type meals.
A few changes in taste has NOTHING to do with savings. I but the cheap stuff all the time because I am on a fixed budget. Taste isn't a factor when you can't rub coins together.
Sometimes the generic actually tastes better.
Honestly generic cereal has gotten pretty good, and I remember generic cheerios and corn flakes were just as good if not better lol atleast some of the time but I find that everything else generic is straight up bad.
does this make the blue pill easier to swallow?
True! One example is Signature Select (Albertsons brand) frozen waffles. Compared to Eggo...the Signature Select are thicker and have more blueberries and chocolate chips in them. 😋
Certain potato chips are like that.
Yes! Walmart’s chicken salad and clear water enhancers are actually my favorite of any brand, major or store. Their hummus is just as good as any other brand, and their tzatziki dip is 90% as good as my other favorite store brand, but literally half the price. There are very few categories where I care about the brand name, and a product really has to differentiate itself for me to give af.
Years ago there was a canned soup recall. There were three or four brands affected meaning only the label and prices were different.
Much of the time store brand items are perfectly fine but we have tried several generic tissues and none of them are anywhere near as soft as Kleenex. Some people over at Kleenex are sitting on some serious secrets. 🤫
Remember that episode of Everyone Hates Chris? The father is like, "No name brands!"
Yes ha ha! He was buying 2 musketeers candy bars cause 3 musketeers we're too much. Lmao. 😂
If you ate generic brands growing up, there is nothing to see here as news lol
Generics are in short supply. Consumers are way ahead of you. People generally don't need to be told to buy the less expensive product.
The Great value twist and shout cookies are good. They are a copy of Oreos. I noticed a slight difference in the first taste, after that they tasted pretty much the same. I prefer any generic brand graham crackers over any of the name brand graham crackers.
At the peanut butter taste-test, I would have been out of there; NEITHER of those brands would EVER find their way into my cart. I mean, why buy peanut butter filled with sugar and shortening? Adams (or any similar brand) with only peanuts as the listed ingredient. 🤷♀️
Well, unfortunately, most of us don’t have the money to buy the pricy, organic, all natural peanut butter. BTW, stop hoarding all the silver spoons.
You can tell when people have never had to think these things when they have to ask that question.
Because the answer is simple. Your going to have to try it. Roll the dice on the cheaper stuff little by little. That way you don't end up with just junk for a week or two. If it's just as good or better. Buy it. If not, don't.
At the rate generic brands will become so popular or well known that they will be the new store brand to us lol.
Unfortunately, we have to pay extra for the quality and healthiness of our foods. We are all aware of how healthier generic foods are for our children, but who can afford to feed their family healthy?? Yay little debbies!
The only things that haven’t went up in price, generally are junk foods.
No way that they are just slapping a different label on and giving out the same prosuct..I buy plenty of generic brands as well as name brands and there is a clear difference in how they taste or feel...it's almost like they leave out something in the generic brand...so stop trying to lie and say that most of the time they are the same thing...it is what it is
I mostly buy store brand…..but we have HEB here in Texas and that’s amazing 😊
HEB likes to skimp on the quality control at times as well.
HEB brand is my name brand of choice.
@@jo4285 I used to work for them. Some brands are great others need work. I honestly love trader joes for value though.
i always bought a store brand the other brand is over price for me and since the pandemic start and inflation gosh its hard to budget the money
I prefer Cape Cod chips over any chips. You can instantly feel the crunch difference.
Why did they only choose things that literally have little to no flavor anyway regardless of brand???
Maybe there's some difference but in the end I'm not willing to pay that much for most things. Or I just don't but it now that the price went up so much. I think a lot is price guadging. I'll wait till it goes down or buy other things
There are just some things a generic substitute just can't match...
Well that's the key. Some things are better. Some are not. Cereal is a good example. It's just cattle feed with sugar. Does it matter the brand?
However coffee on the other hand. Well generic taste like it was brewed in a sock. It's name brand for me.
Ketchup, can't tell the difference. So it's generic for me.
So on and so forth. Shop around, you'll eat better on less.
@@meoff7602 name brand coffee like what? Folgers?😬
@@veganpotterthevegan I mean that's as low as a price as I'm willing to go for coffee.
@@meoff7602 that's abysmally bad coffee. The moldy, bug infested beans from specialty growers is better.
@@veganpotterthevegan Yeah, is that supposed to be a joke? I'm seriously asking?
Welcome to being low income these young whitw people gonna learn today lol 😂
Po wite trash here. You got that right! 😆
@@BEmeraldJade I was waiting for you, emerald. We're joking around, hello? Get over yourself.
@@BEmeraldJade however, since you brought it up, most white people make more than most black people, that's a fact, Jack. So yeah, the point was, some of us have been eating generic forever.
Just a side note that if you live in the United States then the generic brands of any single ingredient product are regulated in their processing and chemical makeup and safety to be the exact same as any name brand. This includes products such as cane sugar, flour, baking powder, baking soda, vinegar, and basically any base level ingredient.
They all meet the same safety requirements. They don't all have the same chemical makeup though. Compare two brand name ketchups with Heinz and Del Monte and you'll see that that's not true
@@veganpotterthevegan That is completely irrelevant as ketchup is not a base item. It is a multi-ingredient product.
@@wreckingopossum so vinegar is all the same? 🤦😂
@@wreckingopossum cane sugar isn't either. They refine out different amounts of molasses
I’ve always tried to buy the store brand stuff. Like the guy said, in most cases, grocery stores have contracts with national brands to make the same pridycts for the stores private labels. It’s the same stuff, just cheaper because the name is different. WalMart brand stuff, however is not as good as other stores brands. Why someone would pay so much for brand names is beyond me.
I have only found one store that most of their items are comparable or better than name brands. That store is Wegmans. They also have the best meats, deli and produce section. And they make the best subs.
It's not true that they are exactly the same. That would be nice though. Store brand you buy a lot of water in stuff like can goods. There's a few things store brand is actually better, but its rare. Chips are way saltier than name brand. I guess they are covering up something. I couldn't eat them.
People need to also look at how much they are getting in a product compared to a year or 2 ago. Over the past few months major brands have decreased the product size but increased the price. Look at the servings or Oz or ML.
Things are up way more than 12%. COSTCO bacon went up 50% in 2 years.
If you don't buy Hellmans mayonnaise or Hidden Valley ranch then you can't date me
Mmmmm. Mayo.
Here's a hint sometimes a generic brand is often made by the name brand
Some store brand products are horrible but some are actually better than the name brand ...all depends on the store you shop at.
I switched to generic condoms.
So far it has cost me about $52,000 in child birth and child care expenses.
Stay away from the wal mart cheese burgers... They are AWFUL🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮
This product *IS* manufactured by the name brand manufacturer in the same factory as XXXXX....
They're are made at the same factory most of the time with no difference except packaging you'll know because when they recall it they will recall both
Heinz ketchup!!! 🤣 that is the FIRST thing I would buy off brand.
Equate shaving cream vs. Barbasol.
I had to go back to Barbasol. It wasn’t even close.
No, sweetness, I didn’t eat the shaving cream. Be clever somewhere else.
While major brand manufacturers are private label co-pack3rs, the ingredients and materials vary.
This is true. They may be close but they're not the same.
All that great value stuff is fire
Not the lube.....it's sticky.
@@dapv144 agreed
Great Value products are disgusting. Every single thing I have tried is not good.
If you have a diet of unprocessed food your grocery bill will be lower and you won't be eating boxed prepared food.
I buy "ADAMS" Peanut butter not because of how it tastes or cost, but because it is the only Peanut Butter that still makes their Peanut Butter in a GLASS JAR! I'll spend more, if it means saving the planet!!
Why does it matter.. it all ends up in the toilet..
Buy fresh food, not prepared food. Cheaper and much better for you. I NEVER buy manufacture-prepared dry cereals, peanut butter, jams, potato chips, softdrinks, canned soup/broth, etc. All are better made at home from quality fresh raw ingredients.
That’s not an option for some people. Not everybody has the money or time to buy completely fresh food and cook everything from scratch.
Oh hi... who owns these stores that are store brand now days???? That's putting money in their pockets outta the "American" ones..... why doesn't America pull it together? Make it sustainable for the people!!! Produced/employed here? Ain't rocket science.... half the stuff is already made elsewhere.... now the companies?
There's SUGAR in everything! Even so called natural soups! Why is their sugar in soups????
Generic products and drugs are generally cheaper to make and of lower quality than the brand name. However, the price difference is very small. The sellers of generics make more money than the sellers of the brand names. They are speculating about the high prices of the brand names and fooling consumers.
I tend to go with store brands when the ingredient list is short enough that the taste ends up being the same. A store brand can of tuna has the same ingredients, size, weight, nutritional information, and taste as a brand name, and probably came from the same factory in Thailand, but costs 1/3 less. A bag of chips tends to have a much larger discrepancy in everything, and I also don't like the taste.
It really doesn't matter, because we all know that if people start buying the generic brands more they are gonna raise the price. Then you'll be back to square one just like chicken, remember the wings were the cheapest part of the chicken now its the most expensive thighs are next to go up.
Can't be picky about food these days. With the prices of everything is going up. But you can blame that on your president.
I think it's good for us as Americans. We're too fat anyways. Cutting back on food won't hurt anyone 😆
I wonder if you pointed out which one was cheaper after, would the results stay the same? In other words, can the price of an item affect your choice?😮
Why don't they just shop at 99 cents only store or Dollar Tree? They carry brand names too. Just slow sales items.
The dude found one of the Cheerios too dry? Is moistness really a quality most people judge in their Cheerios?
Aldis
Comparison should be of quality not taste, secondly tissues are not food and don’t have any taste
Flour 5.99 for named brand outrageously over priced
They should have done Coke, Pepsi, and generic brand Cola.
Well, I am not certain that brand name could be healthier or not. Bigger business have more connection to buy better product cheaper because they buy in big bulk. In the years, for example, I had a friend said Toyota and Lexus share the same engine so they are the same. I ride both before. Lexus is Much better ride. Sometimes we lie to ourselves to feel better. Something things costs more because they are better!
Toyota and Lexus are made by the same company
Lock down , You would buy it . If that was the only thing that was left.
Jif ? That's the name of a floor cleaner, liquid in the UK.
Winco natural ground onsite peanut butter is best. All natural.
Didn't really tell us anything we didn't know.
Most off brands are name brands. Sams choice cola is rc brand
Sometimes Generic is fine.
I had a horrible cold ( decade before before Covid) that took out my smell and taste. Could smell NADA for 90 days ish. Not even an overflowing litter box 2 inches from my nose.
Drove a BATH AND BODY sales person bonkers at the mall. Even a friend was amazed how nose dead I was.
My taste and smell turns on an off.
Just got over a mild case of Covid………..and my nose and taste has turned off….again😒.
I've been doing that before the recession, I've been born a day late and a buck short
Sounds like you’re ahead of the game.
Since when was a 14% difference a "Toss Up"
HEB pushes nothing but their store brands.
Good Job Savannah Sellers
She said, “a little food for thought”
I don’t get it
I love how serious the taste testers take their jobs!
Also, Go Bucks!
Ummmm...... How do I become a brand tester?!
they will get your pockets regardless
Most generic Walmart produce that's bagged is produced by dole
All the generic chicken is produced by tyson
Processed foods galore. No thanks
Processed foods galore. No thanks
Touching food then that mouse? 🤮
I used to bring them to schoo
I’ve never noticed a diffrence when I have taste tested them
I can’t afford either fun
Distributors are going with the Amazon policy
Sell/push the product we make to optimize profits
malto meal cereal all the way
Most of the time there is a big difference in taste and can tell especially for someone like me that's been a professional cook for over 11 years cheap can not compare to name brands all tho I do buy cheap only on some things very few thing's
Good stuff savannah
Thanks Biden
Access signature products are excellent store brands especially their gf pasta!
Sometimes you have to use more of the generic cleaning products to get the same result.
Generic.
Hardly
They can do generics after patent e piers then pu blic domain
Are either one of the two options even sacred? Then why even bother
The knockoff alcohol at ALDI is hilarious!
You don't need chips and garbage snacks
The brand names are being replaced by products from different countries. China, France, and others. I would rather stick with a name brand. What are a few cents more? Walmart is a low-class store. The clothes are ugly, and not even the size it is claimed to be. The metric system is different in other countries. Walmart is getting worse with poor quality products with the higher hike prices.
You can thank Democrat policies for this predicament!! Keep voting Democrat and this is what you gef!!
The clown tried to end democracy. This “predicament” beats a dictatorship every day of every week of every year.
I’ll buy what’s cheaper most of the time.
They are all generic to me I don't know why!
Both of them are highly processed food
👀👀normal news?👀👀👀👀👀👀👀😊😊😊
