    Nice video Rodney. You mentioned that steelhead spend a year in the river before heading out. The Ptolemy study from 1987 concluded that steelhead smolts spend 2 to 3 years in the river, with those rearing in the upper reaches and small tributaries more likely to spend 3 years in fresh water and returning as 5 year old fish. Other things I found interesting in that study were the fact that the available rearing habitat in the river was found to be saturated with wild coho and steelhead smolts and therefore adding hatchery smolts to the mix only hurts the wild fish by adding competition for scarce food. I assume that's why steelhead smolts are reared at the hatchery till they're ready to head out to the ocean and released low in the system. That study also recommended opening the upper river to angling, which I don't agree with. These fish need some sort of refuge from the relentless angling pressure they face.

      Gold River's winter steelhead populations have declined to the point of extinction in the past 6 or 7 years.

    Awesome fish, Rod, chrome tank! Great video! I agree, filming steelhead videos is hard. Catching steelhead can be hard, much less getting it all on camera!

    Do you bobber dog the shrimp or have it suspended a couple inches off the bottom like a worm jig?

    • @FishingwithRod
      @FishingwithRod  Рік тому

      What's bobber dog? I usually adjust my float depth so the jig with the shrimp is drifting around a foot or less off the bottom.

    Notice any difference between the amount of morning and afternoon bites? And if fishing in the afternoon do you work a run/tailout slower than you would in the morning (if no one is behind you)?

    • @FishingwithRod
      @FishingwithRod  Рік тому +1

      I cannot say definitively that more bites occur in the afternoon than in the morning, but what I can say though is that fishing pressure is often much higher in the morning and in the past twenty years I’ve had way more success in the afternoon out there by myself than fishing among others in the morning.

    Very nice fish! It’s been a challenging season here in Oregon. Do you use raw shrimp and if so do you cure or brine them to stay on the hook better?

    • @FishingwithRod
      @FishingwithRod  Рік тому +1

      The shrimp I use are cooked already and come in a bag in the frozen section. Cooked so they are firmer. I always salt them and let them dry further until the firmness I want.

    That steelhead was powerful. You had it almost on shore and then it turned back into the deeper current to fight you! Nice catch. But does Nina know that you took the shrimp cocktail?

    • @FishingwithRod
      @FishingwithRod  Рік тому +1

      Yeah that first time it came up, it was more to see if it was a wild or hatchery fish. If that was a hatchery fish I probably would have just slid it up the bank when it came close to shore again. Once I could identify it as a wild, out came the net to make sure she stays safe. 😅
