  • Part One: • Marty Stuart: COVID-19...
Marty Stuart is a five-time GRAMMY-winner, platinum recording artist, Lifetime Achievement Award recipient from the Americana Music Association, Grand Ole Opry star, country music archivist, photographer, musician, and songwriter.
Since starting out singing gospel as a child, Stuart has spent over four decades celebrating American roots music. His teenage years on tour with bluegrass legend Lester Flatt in the ’70s were followed by six years in Johnny Cash’s band in the ’80s, and a chart-topping tenure as a solo artist in the ’90s.
Most recently, Stuart confirmed the 20th anniversary release of his celebrated record, The Pilgrim - Deluxe Edition for the first time ever on vinyl. These newly unearthed songs include features by Country music legends including Ralph Stanley, Connie Smith, Emmylou Harris, Earl Scruggs, and more.
In this clip Marty Stuart talks about his great band, The Fabulous Superlatives.

Marty Stuart has done more to preserve country musics past than anyone I know... I believe he has over 6000 guitars, and many other important pieces of memorabilia spanning from the 40’s onward....

Marty and the Superlatives, especially Kenny, are national treasures. Kenny's interviews with Otis Gibbs are the best music interviews I've ever seen. He's met hundreds of the best popular musicians of the last half of the 20th century and he doesn't have a bad word to say about a single one of them.

It's amazing how The Byrd's "Sweetheart of the Rodeo" from 1968 influenced so many musicians. I hated country music until I heard it and it still endures as one of the greatest country music records ever made. The fact that it was made by a folk, pop rock band of long hairs was a wake up call for many of us. Later I learned every song they played on that record.

Just stumbled on this and sat right down to watch. There are two folks, same age, Wynton Marsalis and Marty Stuart who were fortunate enough to be there before the *old days* were over, and to understand and absorb what they experienced. As they have matured they have shared their treasure with us, innovated and preserved, educated us and given us remarkable good times. While remaining nice guys. I feel privileged to live in times when their music and stories and wisdom and experience is available to us via the internet, even when we are confined to home. Thank you for helping to preserve and spread the good news. 💕🙋😷🎵🎶

I got so excited when I saw this new segment. So much bonus info. Marty's band is more than Nashville country, their stripped down sound keeps the Bakersfield Sound alive too. Marty is such a Historian, I knew Chris was into knowing a lot of the history and how they played etc. Imagine the books or miniseries Marty and Chris could do. Not long after I moved to Nashville, I learned there were key people that I could learn from to understand the heart and soul of Nashville. For some reason, it was important for me to really understand the roots. If I had to get it down to four foundations, it was Marty, Eddie Stubbs on Sunday night, Vince Gill and Marion James. I really paid attention to those four. It just so happened that I became best friends with Marion the last few years before her passing. I learned about and met so much of the R&B community through her.

He was at our gig as a spectator on Friday night, and I crewed for them on Saturday. He asked if we were playing again on Saturday night and unfortunately I had to tell him no. He would have been very welcome to come sit in if we would have played again. When they launched into Mr. Spaceman I was floored. I played that song for years with one of my bands.

I had to chime in when Marty described hearing "Sweetheart Of The Rodeo". "Fusion" is a word commonly tossed around when it comes to the merging of Jazz with Rock. But rarely is it more apropos than when describing "Sweetheart Of The Rodeo" by The Byrds. It is a fusion record in every sense of the word.

On part 2 now....great interview Joe...they all are! Thank you! I have become so much more interested in the musicians behind the headliner than I am in the headliner over the past few years. Love learning about these guys and gals...UA-cam offers so much access to these folks and the studio musicians from over the years. It’s so cool to see all these people who played on the albums of my childhood and formative years.
