It was a brief comment but the other Earthbending students had mentioned that the Beifongs didn't have a daughter. This suggests that Toph's parents weren't so much being overprotective of her but rather more concerned about their image and were ashamed of Toph's blindness. IMO this takes them from overprotective to straight up abusive.
Not necessarily, they were very wealthy and probably lived well away from the kids talking about the wresting match
Think about how protective the parents are and how the earth king hadnt even left the palace his whole life
It was stated in jest once so not necessarily canon but the creators said that Suki once dated the foaming mouth guy...and she regretted it. Also his freakout screams were done by one of them.
Toph is my favourite character in the show, and it is also so painful to wait so long until she finally makes an entrance!

@@wtimmins the crazy thing is, is there's a character in tales of zesteria that i absolutely love because she's got a lot of toph in her from not just being an earth user, but also having somewhat of a personality like hers and the game drastically changes how much fun i had with it from before she's introduced and playable to after she is and this comment represents that just like ATLA

Getting smacked in the head with the belt shows Toph's earthbending-vision isn't just treated as regular sight - Sokka was on Appa when he threw it and it traveled entirely through the air before hitting her, all other projectiles she was able to dodge were launched from a place where she would have been able to "see" it through earthbending when launched at her. The show does a good job of keeping track of what she would be able to see with the ability as it's set up and what she shouldn't.

Or at least that's what you would assume because that is exactly how it works at other times in the show, just not here... so yeah, sometimes it's kinda iffy

I also love how Aang and Toph are true opposites. You can see through their bending why each one struggles against the other, the blind spots they have. We saw Aang struggle with Bumi and Earth constructs when he was just an Airbender. Obviously he struggles to learn it and there's a conceptual barrier as well. But Toph struggles too. Without her sight Aang's bending fully exploits her weaknesses, and since he's so fluid and independent from the ground, her more basic offense doesn't affect him. And if his gusts separate her from the Earth, there's almost nothing she can do. Toph softens a bit and Aang gains some confidence and firmness going forward, but in another universe I'd actually like to see them bond a bit more and see what happens...as tiny opposite benders lol

Trivia Dump: The Boulder's character is inspired by The Rock, like the whole talking in third person cracking jokes wrestling schtick. They tried to get Dwayne Johnson to voice The Boulder but couldn't manage it. Instead they got in Mick Foley (Mankind) to voice the boulder, who was The Rock's tag team partner for a couple years in WWF.

The Boulder is supposed to be a parody of Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson and originally they wanted him to voice him but there was a scheduling conflict, so instead they got another big name wrestler named Mick Foley who was also a good friend of Dwayne Johnson to do the voice instead.

Toph might be my favorite anime character ever.
The voice actress for Toph is the same one who voiced the little girl who called Katara a floozy in the fortune teller episode. They liked her enough to bring her back as part of the main cast. Also originally, the idea for the earth bending teacher was someone completely different who they ended up using as Roku's earth bending teacher in a different episode

The mayor is voiced by actor James Hong who along with Mako (voice of Iroh) were one of many co-founders of the East West Players, an Asian American Theatre troupe, that was designed to help Asian actors at the time branch out from the stereotypical roles they were given. James Hong is still kicking at the age of 95 and has voiced a lot of characters over the years.
Avatar Kiyoshi was voiced by Jennifer Hale, who if you've played any video game or seen a cartoon over the past 20 years, you've heard her voice somewhere.

Oh man I just realized a continuity error. The option clockwise of "boiled in oil" was "impaled on spikes" while the wheel was spinning, but then when the invaders struck it changed to "community service." Wonder why it wasn't initially community service and played up for the "oh dang so close" element.
It wasn't changed so that some people would have something to overanalyze and nitpick.
Katara was my favorite character right up till Toph joined the group....
then there was no competion, Toph just wiped the floor and no one could compete

Toph's Parents have become blinded to their own caring/love for (Toph) throughout her childhood; once shown the truth, their foundation that they built and carved of their own doing, has literally crumbled to the ground. Though instead of seeing (Toph's) true identity, welcoming her and opening a new found relationship to build; they revert back, deeper this time. Trying endlessly rebuild what can never be built again; they are lost, walking aimlessly around always seeking for something that will never be.
In their goal to provide the best, they are the ones that have turned truly (Blind) and the one that can truly {See} is (Toph)
There is a Bible Passage that mentions this very action, from (John 12:40) Their eyes are blinded, their hearts are hardened, So that they wouldn't see with their eyes and perceive with their hearts, And turn to me, God, so I could heal them.
Note: The traditional Earth-bending Martial Art that is displayed by the majority, near all Earth-Benders is called: Hung-ga
While (Toph's) basic foundation martial arts is probably {Hung-ga} her overall martial arts style/form is called: Praying Mantis

ironic you should mention the WWE. the Boulder's voice is done by one of the biggest hardcore WWE Hall of Famer's Mick Foley. you should watch his match against the Undertaker.. Hell in a Cell.. decades later n that one is still considered one of the best matches ever done. Suffice to say he got tossed off the 16-20 ft cage to the concrete floor n still got up n came back for more even though he had a separated shoulder n concussion . the voice over on Avatar, unless u knew he was a professional wrestling legend... sounds totally different from his rl speaking voice.

This show did good female characters back before there was a big push for it and the show did it without being agenda driven. It just simply had good female characters. I wish current shows would take notes. People do not hate strong female characters and this show 100% proves it. We just hate it being forced and agenda driven.
