So far?? You’ve already seen all of them 😭 poor Iroh lost the battle, lost his son, lost his father, and lost the throne yet he always sees life on the positive side
i think it’s a cool writing choice how zuko misunderstands his mom in the flashback. she tells him never to forget who he is and in that moment he takes it as who he is literally, what his royal position is and that he’s a firebender. what she actually meant was what she said to him earlier in the episode. “that’s who you are zuko, someone who keeps fighting even when it gets hard.”
One of the best episodes of the show IMO. I can’t say it’s the best, bc not all the characters are here and I love those guys, but man this is a great one!!
Definitely one of my personal favorite episodes of the show! This really was a true testiment by the creators of the show to the audience that they felt that Zuko was certainly as important as the other main characters.
3:16 - btw, when they ask him for his name, he already had a fake name from another episode - Lee, but it would be awkward since there is already someone named Lee so that's why he was like - Ummm ehhh....
This episode was the one that made me think about it. They don't really show people get fully injured when faced with element benders. But can you imagine IRL situations, seeing your husband/wife/kids and other loved ones, become charred corpses from facing fire benders, mangled and crushed from rocks facing earth benders, drowned and bloated or full off icicle holes facing water benders. I don't doubt, how Iroh could break down seeing his only son dead on the battlefield.
**possible spoilers if you plan on reading the comics** From what I understand, I haven't read the comics that tie in to this episode, but from what I heard, Ozai didn't kill his father. Azulan actually did want Ozai to k*ll Zuko, and Ozai had full intentions to do it. But Ursa came up with a plan to spare Zuko and make Ozai the new Firelord. Ursa would k*ll Azulan, and "claim" he appointed Ozai before his death. For her "treason", Ozai said she was to be banished.
OK the best way I can think of to help you understand the character of Azula is if you have any type a personalities in your family that like those people who just seem like they’re good at everything and they’re pretty perfect That’s what Azules characters representing is that type of personality that’s always had it fairly easy in life, because things come fairly natural to them the child prodigy And being a child, prodigy has a lot of pressure, and it can warp your personality because it can give you a false sense of superiority I don’t wanna spoil anything for the future, but you’re gonna love seeing this character, and this type of personality and the journey it takes It’s very rare for shows to get this kind of character, right And avatar the last Airbender gets a lot of really good character personalities right, that other shows just failed to do And fair warning Netflix did not manage to capture this character in their adaptation
So Ba Sing Se is the capital of the earth kingdom. I'm assuming your viewers are talking about the episode Tales from Ba Sing Se which is a series of vignettes with one very poignant one. Regarding Zuko's mom's fate, the answer is actually found in a comic after the series ended
One of the best 23 minutes on any TV ever. There is so much to unpack. Zuko took more from his mother partially because he's just wired that way. But, it's also because Ozai basically threw him away. Ozai concentrated on Azula because he saw great power there. Unfortunately, Azula became one of the focal points for Ozai. He groomed her and trained her to be as ruthless and merciless as himself. And, daddy's little girl will do anything to please him. I have a theory as to why Azulon ordered Ozai to kill his own son. Azulon favored Iroh and Lu Ten. He refers to Iroh as his first born, and Lu Ten as "beloved". I think he was sincerely grieving the loss of his first grandchild. Iroh was everything Ozai was not. Iroh was smart, loyal, sane, and proficient. Ozai is a psychopathic egotistical narcissistic maniac who would do anything for any amount of power. I think there was a reason Ozai was not out fighting the war like Iroh. I also think Azulon believed ordering Ozai to kill Zuko would fracture the family beyond repair. There was no way Azulon wanted Ozai, his crazy doppelganger Azula, or his weak son Zuko to ever rule the Fire Nation. What he didn't count on was Usula teaming up with Ozai to protect Zuko. You mess with a mom's babies and they bite.
One of their best episodes for many reasons, obviously. What I like in particular is the ambiguity the writers used in telling Zuko's backstory. Obviously it's still a kid's show and there were things they could not do, but they used that to their advantage so here we have a 16 year old going trough his traumatic childhood memories without knowing what exactly happened. Was Azulon murdered? Who did it? What happened to lady Ursa? (her name means "female bear" in Latin). Is she alive? Why is Azula the way she is? Did she actually lie or did she tell the truth? Now we have the same questions Zuko has, and we emphatize with him even more. Great writing.
Even though in this episode is left rather unclear what actually happened the night that Ursa left, there is a key event in the very first of Zuko's flashback that might shed some light on a first watch. Right after Zuko complains about the mother turtle-duck biting him for disturbing her children, Ursa says: "Zuko... that's what moms are like. If you mess with their babies... HUM! They're gonna bite you back" Which in itself is a rather lighthearted and even funny sentence. Now put it in a "game of thrones"- esque situation and do the math... 😳
i really hope no one has spoiled what happened to Ursa in the comments because more about that is revealed in the next book this is one of the best episodes of the book, and of the entire show 💜
While the preceding years to their flashback are a mystery, the clues are there to surmise how Zuko and more importantly Azula have the personalities they have by this young age. It's important to note how the Earth Kingdom boy, Lee, shifts to hate the Fire Nation both in imitation of his mother and from everything he's experienced. He just changes, at least outwardly (in a later scene he does look conflicted or hurt), without any deliberation. This is supposed to show the effect on children this young - Azula and many other Fire Nation children are the way they are because of the regime, the propaganda, and the parents and adults in their lives that show them little else. From there, they become the type of adults the Fire Nation wants. My own theory is that Azula turns out just as her father and the military want because she's so darn proficient, and so the personality goes extra hard. Zuko had the unlikely blessing of struggle, along with a few others. His struggle causes Ozai to shun him, but as he strives to win his father's approval like everyone else, his mother and uncle are there to console him - two people whose personalities completely defy the Fire Nation mentality and values. Because of this they become the "good guy" parents and Ozai becomes the "bad guy." Zuko may outwardly strive to be like everyone else, but his mind clings to the personalities of his mother and later his uncle...because they love him. console him, and support him. Ursa leaves, but by then the "damage" is done. Zuko has some of his father's nature in him, but mostly his mother's, he just suppresses it, so it only leaks out at key moments. Over the years, his father and sister continue to be these people he strives to prove himself to, and that has an effect, but his core personality remains. Many people despise Azula even in these flashbacks, but the show is telling you she's just the latest product of this psycho war regime. It's also worth noting that the opposite dynamic occurs with Azula - her mother is the one that scolds her, while her father remains proud and encouraging. As a result, she doubles down on what dad likes, and paints mom as the villain, which Ozai probably didn't discourage. And as they grow they continue to be surrounded in this environment, with nothing to challenge their notions of the world. Zuko travelling with his Uncle from 13-16 is the opportunity he needed to deprogram himself, but Azula didn't really get that.
8:12 Commenting on this since I know you've finished ATLA..... This might sound harsh but I feel that the mom (Ursa, I think her name is) contributed to how Azula turned out. While we see she's clearly a nurturing presence to Zuko, we don't see that kind of affection towards Azula. Instead, we get at best dismissive remarks like "What is wrong with that child?" (and within earshot of Azula, no less) whenever Azula says or does anything problematic. Likewise, Zuko eventually had Iroh to provide guidance after Ursa disappeared. I wonder how differently Azula might have turned out had she received more positive influences in her earlier years. And when Iroh later comments about Zuko having the potential for both, good and evil, due to his duel heritage, that should have also held true for Azula since they share the same lineage.
It's interesting that if you watch the show carefully you can see that, despite all the manipulation and animosity, there are several moments where Azula tries to connect with Zuko, but there's no scene in the show where he does. Deep down, she wanted to be loved by her family, but didn't believe she could be loved (hence the whole "my own mother thought I am a Monster") and there wasn't really anyone to prove her wrong. She had both nature and nurture against her.
@@evilwelshman Another aspect would probably be that Azula was born talented/ Zuko wasn't born with talent(or at least talent deemed worthy by Ozai). So Ozai favored Azula, regardless if that was a good thing or not, so Ursa acted like a counter balance and gave more attention to Zuko. As they grew and Azula took more n more from her father, the gap between Ursa and Azula grew even more. Situations like this typically happen with each parent favouring 1 child. Not saying Ursa didn't do anything wrong, just adding how and why it can happen.
Notes that answer these questions that are actually answered in the comic book that follows the end of the series: Ursa (Azula and Zuko's mom) was promised to Ozai because she was a descendant from Avatar Roku. At the time, she had a boyfriend, and Ozai always believed Zuko was son of this guy instead of him (yes, it makes me think Ozai doesn't understand how pregnancy works). That is why he never liked Zuko, and liked Azula more, because he was sure she was his daughter.
Ironic how azulas mother ask whats wrong with azula ... im always like .. shes your freaking daughter if you show her the same love you show zuko maybe you would know whats wrong with her ...
@@samlung2724 but zuko was born first so that doesnt make sense... i think she show zuko more love and ozai saw that as weak ... when azula came along and he saw that her mother wasnt close to her so he took her in ... its reasonable for a kid to look for any parents love .. azula is just manipulated and brainwash from her dad whos is like literally the king of the world .. of course shes gonna lean into him and try to please him ..
I don't think loves Azula less, but if Ozai is favoring Azula , as a mother she HAS to protect Zuko more, she litteraly need to intervene to protect him, it's not a matter of preference. Also Azula IS an actual prodigee, that's not easy parenting, and many struggle to educate those kind of kids, it can become increasingly unhealthy for a child to be too talented too soon if not parented properly. Azula and Zuko are victim of their circumstances and their Father in their own way.
What you mean ... azula was raise by her father cuz her mother was too busy loving zuko and push her away .. of course she was going to look for love in her father....

"Ursa" for Zuko's mom is a noticeably different name than other Fire Nation citizens.
Ursa means bear. As in mama bear.
