    I really respect the fact they named it after Gus Grissom, the astronaut who died in Apollo 1.

      Kruge would have been laughed at by the Klingons for destroying an unarmed science ship. " As the humans say........Dead men tell no tales", as he shoots his gunner. I liked how his gunner actually said " A lucky shot" as if that comment was going to save him.

    You have done in these videos what I thought was impossible…. You made me have a positive opinion of the USS Redshirt, it looked like an interesting and impressive vessel in your builds and that was something I never got from any of the movies and episodes I’d ever seen it in. To the point where I am very much considering adding this kit to my collection

      Yeah, you know, I’ve never been a fan of this design but I’ve never hated it because it was interesting. I’m thinking of picking one up and pull a USS PEGASUS on it (a la half phased into an astroid).

    Hey AllScale, I was wondering if you could make a complete guide to LED-lighting ships/models? Where you look at every part of it, showing what you need and how to wire power supplies etc? I'm sure alot of people would be interested in it, not just Trek collectors. Thanks!

    Really surprised this doesn't come with the same aztec and paneling decals that the smaller kit had, as it just looks way too bare without them. Guess I'll need to wait for someone to make up some masking sets instead.
    The kit does look really cool otherwise though.

    Good job with the kit, I've developed a new appreciation for the Grissom thanks to this. I wonder if the shuttles and windows point to a scale problem. Might this be a 1:500 scale?
    I've also wondered if the Grissom came from a "platform" ship; perhaps with a small adjustment to the warp nacelle positions, and possible variations lacking the sensor pod. A base model without any lower decks, a tug with intermodal transport containers ala Franz Joseph, an armed scout or light destroyer with an underslung weapons pod. With the scale issues sorted, and some clever kitbashing, this could become part of an unsung hero class of the fleet!

    You did a fantastic job with the model. I really enjoyed watching you build it. Only one thing: you went with the wrong Starfleet insignias for the Grissom; the ones you used are for the TNG era ships.

      They are mislabeled on the sheet. I cut out the ones that were called for and they were both for the port side the SfS and the TNG . So I cut out one for the Starboard and had to guess which was correct, which was not the correct ones

    It's my guess that the studio builders didn't really put much thought into this ship, since it was decided that she was going to get blown up fairly quick. Probably why there are alot of solid paint areas on the ship. The fans have put more thought into this, then anyone else, such as maybe adding aztec to it?

  • @haines96
    @haines96 2 роки тому +1

    So... In-universe...I assume the lower hill is just packed with sensor equipment and fuel, with no people, because it seems like only Jeffries tubes to get from top to bottom....? Would make sense for a science vessel, I guess. Probably if there is an engineering deck there, then perhaps there is a way up and down... Like a waterslide down and a ski lift up?

    • @rustyhonda
      @rustyhonda 2 роки тому +1

      That's another reason why the scale seems off. Those pylons should be thick enough for a turbolift, and that doesn't make sense if the model pictured is at 1:350 scale. To make the pylons, windows, and shuttle bays work to human scale, it really needs to be a much larger vessel. But then the Grissom is supposed to be small ship, so making it as big as the Constellation class doesn't make a lot of sense story-wise.
      And to complicate things further, sorry, in TNG, the Tsiolkovsky appears to be about the same size as a Constellation class compared to the Galaxy class Ent-D. I guess the Search for Spock visual effects folks dropped the ball.

    • @uwekonnigsstaddt524

      @@rustyhonda Some people have done extensive "scaled measurements" comparisons of this ship.....and the results.......are all over the place. The closest (according with one guessed opinion) scale is that this ship should be about 150 meters long. Of course, that is one guess. Putting all scale precision to the side, I like the design; it is odd, a science vessel that has little info presented in the Star Trek universe. I happy to see the Sci Fi companies continued to produce these kits. Another favorite of mine is the Pasteur, Olympic-Class medical ship. If it were to be made at a 1/1000 scale, it would come out about a foot long, if my scaling is correct. Just happy to know more Sci Fi kits are being released. I am in the process of writing a letter (that's snail mail) to the company that is producing this kit, thanking them for continuing to invest on these Sci Fi kits. If only they would also produce the Pasteur. Happy Modeling!

    it would of been cooler if....the ship can be removed from the pole....inside the model iz a rechargeable mah battery....there iz a l.e.d indicator that will flash when the model iz low in battery battery....just pick a place to hide the light to shine....example make the impulse flash with all other light off....then you get a feel for the model that iz much closer to what you view in the movie....in your hands....when you set the model back on to the mount....it recharges....to see that it iz fully charged....make some of the lights that you see that are on....off until fully charged up battery

    • @uwekonnigsstaddt524
      @uwekonnigsstaddt524 2 роки тому

      In my case, once I get the kit, the battery will be left at its base. The reason being is that with time, batteries will stop charging as their recharging properties diminish. Another way is to have those mini powerful magnets that could keep the ship together, then separate the kit and replace the battery that would no loner charge. My 2 cents

    I think they scaled the Grissom a bit too small for 350.. the windows do absolutely not fit the Enterprise ones. Compared to window(deck hight), the Grissom should be able to carry Shuttles in that bay. Its too small.

      It is one of those Star Trek's....inconsistencies....The Reliant has not deflector shield....of course, I am not a Star Trek "experten", so perhaps those in the "know"...know more than I do. I like the ship; it is an odd looking design, kind of one of a kind...sort of. It is a perfect example for kit-bashing. Ugh! Models made a 1/1000 scale of this ship, including a "modded" one that had a weapons platform similar to the one used by the Reliant, instead of the sensor pod. Once I get mine, most likely 3, I'd replaced the "baffles/grills" on the back of the engines/warp coils with clear polystyrene and light it with a blue LED bind it, giving it a soft "blue glow" similar to the NX-01/Enterprise D warp coil. Of course, blinking/strobe lights.

    Great build Mario. I noticed on the decal an NAR number. Never seen that before, is that for Pegasus I wonder? An experiment though not NX? I wonder if Grissom only had small shuttles though as you said the sales don't always make sense. I you compare the windows on the refit, the BOP and this as you say the sizes don't really match up, but that's nitpicking really.

    • @markriser1

    I know this is an older video, but I just bought the kit and regarding the size difference between it and the 350 Enterprise. It's not only the fact the shuttlecraft is too big for the Grissom but the generic name and number decals I bought for the Enterprise are also too big.
    In fact in order to customize the Grissom to another name & registry I actually have to use the same decals in 1000 scale.
    This further shows that despite both ships being 350, their actual "real life" sizes don't match up.

      This design has very sporadic specs. People have spent countless time attempting to get an "official" scale only to leave it in frustration. The filming miniature was reused for other episodes, perhaps at least another motion picture (?), adding to the confusion of its true scale. This kit is big and it opens the door for a ton of kitbashing. The bridge dome could be replaced with a more "accurate" window(s) row(s) in clear resin, using light blocking paint to only allow LED's light to shine through. Or simply a custom scale decal set to allow for one row. The upper saucer has 2 rows of windows, then the upper dome (bridge?) also has 2 rows of windows. Perhaps the entire upper dome (bridge?) and its segmented deck on which it sits, can be replace as a single unit, removing the recessed lines and making it a "smoothie", adding some Aztec decals ( I am a LOVER of Aztec designs) and make the kit more "accurate". The filming miniature has "paneled" areas all over its surface......except the upper/lower saucer. It seems its creators/designers ran out of time or something. Anyways, great ideas orbit my head, awaiting for this kit to be released. Happy Modeling!

  • @PhuVet
    @PhuVet 2 роки тому

    btw, look at the airlock decal, they accidentally put enterprise on it when they copied and pasted it from that kit.
    Also, look at the specs for the Oberth class, I'll post just the Armament you said didnt exist...
    2 x Type IV phaser bank, total output 3,500 TeraWatts 1 x Probe/photon launcher equivalent to standard photon torpedo tube with 25 rounds in the magazine bay.
    Please look at the specs before quoting them. Starfleet would never put a ship out in a dangerous galaxy without self defensive weapons at least.

    Looks cool, would like to get ones of these soon, the one and only thing that always annoys me within Star Trek is INCONSITANCY/INACCURATE just like those windows on the Grissom! or a super sized bird of prey in TNG, comes down to budget and laziness i guess.

    • @haines96
      @haines96 2 роки тому

      Yeah if Bird of Prey had "...about a dozen officers and men" it seems like it should be relatively small in the habitable areas, so it almost looked too big in SFS, but definitely later seemed larger than that in TNG.

  • @PhuVet
    @PhuVet 2 роки тому

    The Motion picture models on the federation side are all painted PEARLs not plain white. This has been said a million times by the Smithsonian resto crews. The TNG models are a semi white. The Original series were a slightly off white mix before TMP. The rest are cgi. You didn't have to mask because unlike another channel, you didn't firehose it with krylon.
