Building 1/350 Star Trek USS Grissom Part 1

  • This is part 1 of my Polar Lights 1/350 USS Grissom kit which I will be naming the Pegasus. I'll be detailing the model accordingly using reference pictures found on the Modeler's Miniatures and Magic website as a guide. This video includes a brief look of the unbuilt kit and a review of my plans for detailing and lighting. The build starts with painting using masks from Aztec Dummy. NOTE: Blending can be minimized or even eliminated by simply choosing a lighter color for the medium gray accents. Mine was too dark so it took a lot more effort to blend them in. Possibly consider something close to the old Testors Light Gray or even Tamyia's Sky gray lightened with white. Another option, Mission Models Light gray assuming you use white as the base color.

    Really obvious in this kit, when you see the primary hull detail, that the original studio model must have had parts from a truck kit used for the greebels. You can see two truck tyres, part of the chassis, an axle and the underneath of the gearbox. Nice they reproduced this so well in this model, that you can still tell what the studio model had.

    I haven't done any model building in probably 20 years... maybe 25 years since I've done a sci-fi kit. But now that my wife and kids are old and boring and don't require as much of my attention... I've been getting the itch to return. Stumbled across your channel and I'm hooked.
    Full disclosure: I am one of those guys that has never been a fan of the aztec look on consumer scaled models. To my eyes they almost always end up looking like some kind of experimental WW2 German aircraft camo. While I can truly appreciate the skill and craft that goes into the end result, paint detail that was barely discernable on screen when using 6 or 8 foot studio models just doesn't translate to comparatively tiny consumer models... But all that said, these Grissom panels are looking damn gorgeous from an execution standpoint. Will be curious to see the final product. Subscribed.

    A quick tip for you on the larger paint masks. You can mak it easier by using clear transfer film. Cut out around the desired mask and then lay the transfer film over it. This will keep the paint masks from not being uniform. It works the same way as if you buy pre-cut vinyl stickers. The vinyl shape is on a backing paper and there is a clear film on top. Once you get your vinyl mask in place and burnish it down you then peel the clear off and your all set to go. You can get a 12 ×48 inch roll at Walmart for around 4 and a half dollars. This way you don't have to cut the masks and then piece them together. Have a great week ahead.

    I have a Japanese book called Star Trek Mechanics. Published in 1999, it features close up photos of the filming miniatures of most every vessel shown in Star Trek up until the TNG movies... except the Grissom! It has a picture of the Enterprise facing off with the Klingon BoP from Search for Spock even, but no pictures of the Grissom. Such a mystery...

    I remember watching Star Trek and Star Wars on my old tv thinking the ships were all white or light grey. I would buy magazines with movie prop models and be amazed how different they looked from the onscreen look. Modellers would mimic the prop look based on the magazines or the "onscreen look" what it looks like in editing. These days with the 4k I still notice lighting and dark settings still obsure the real look of space ships. It's fun to dive into the details.

      Absolutely agree. I also was amazed at the level of detail whenever I would see pics in Starlog magazine. That paneling turned out fantastic! I'm glad to see more modelers using craft acrylics. They're so much cheaper. I always feel totally ripped off buying hobby paints at $8 for a tiny spray can or $5-$6 for a tiny bottle. It's part of the reason I've been taking a break from modeling for a while.

    I'd also thought I would paint the insert in the secondary Hull separately to allow better access. I hadn't spotted the tabs but if they are easily removed I'll go that route.

      Hey Antony. It's a pretty easy technique. Using the Pegasus picture as a guide is helpful. If you've not tried it before, practice on a piece of styrene or a scrap piece from an old model. Start with some basic rectangles and overlap shapes of various sizes as you go along. Vary the shading, you want to be able to see the shape your spraying over. You can start to get fancier by using thin strips in between to create other types of panels. Thanks for watching. Feel free to email me if you have any questions.

      @@InterstellarModeler I’m a new subscriber so I haven’t looked through all of your videos yet so please let me know if you have made similar videos previously but for me I was fascinated about the panel layering effects you did. It made that model look spectacular. I’m interested in the choice of paint, layering, effects of panels currently. Space vehicles and kit bashing stuff is my area right now and making my models more realistic is my goal. I have to work on larger scale models such as this because of my bad eyes hahaha so paint is often a bid deal for me. The explanations are top notch, I would just like to see a little longer cut of the painting maybe before and after each step of a multiple layer panel? I appreciate it's after the fact, but I've found that Vallejo Model Air is the best option for those tricky Star Trek blue / green pastel colours - they do a wide range, they are not too saturated and not too dark and can be air-brushed straight from the bottle, whereas most paints need to be thinned and white added.
    They are military colours for aircraft, e.g. Russian blue, duck egg blue etc. it's best to buy a few different ones and test them on a sheet of paper, I guarantee you'll find one that fits with the effect you're after with minimal effort.
    Great job so far by the way 👍

    Looking good so far. Won't be getting around to mine till fall. It's been way too humid for any painting this summer. I've been using the cheap Apple Barrel matte acrylics using a mix of about 40 percent paint to 60 percent Isopropyl alcohol. I use the Equate 90 percent alcohol and the paint goes down well and I have never had to filter it before use. It dries very quickly and I have never had any problems with masking tape pulling up the paint. Testors clear spray paints don't effect the paint in any way. I used the same 90 percent Isopropyl alcohol with my Tamiya acrylics when I built the big 350th scale Klingon K'tinga and had no problems whatsoever. You can also use the 70 percent Isopropyl alcohol and mix the same 60/40 ratio and it works fine too except it has a little more drying time as it contains more water than the 90 percent alcohol. I have never had any issues with having to filter the paint before spaying. I just use my old Badger single action air brush. Have a great week ahead.

      I pick up the Apple Barrel paints at Walmart. Folk Art is a good brand as I believe Chris over at Classic Plastic uses it. I don't know how much of a difference there is between different brands of craft acrylics other than colors that are available in different brands. It basically comes down to what works best for each individual.

    Hey dude, I know it's been a while, but I had a question. What color did you end up using for the "Robin's Egg Blue" color? I didn't see it in the video at all. The call-outs on the boxes are not always accurate. I just finished the 1/1000 Reliant from WoK and it said to use Duck Egg Blue, which is *way* too green for what was supposed to be on the Reliant. Also; your aztecking is ridiculously good. Would you create a video with more detail on how you did the aztecking on this ship and others? I'm still learning my airbrush, so trying to focus on 'light' oversprays like you did here.

    • @InterstellarModeler
      @InterstellarModeler  Рік тому

      Hi...thanks for the compliments. When doing my research prior to working on this project, I discovered that the studio model did not have any of the duck egg blue colors that were recommended. The model instead had panels painted with light shades of gray. So I did not use any blues. The colors I used are listed in the video description of part 1. As for the paneling, I will make a note of that request. I do plan on doing serious of how to videos some time in the future. These would short, concise videos devoted to one particular technique. Easiest way is to just practice on scrap plastic or even wood. Use tape to partially mask off sharp corners and apply your paint. Proceed by overlapping the squared off shapes and airbrush with varied densities of paint. Thanks again for watching.
