  • Amir Siraj is the director for interstellar object studies at the Galileo Project and is currently studying Astrophysics and Astronomy at Harvard University under Avi Loeb. One of his new papers, Breakup of a Long-Period Comet as the Origin of the Dinosaur Extinction, details how a comet is the most likely answer for what caused the dinosaur extinction.
Amir has also released papers on how the Oort cloud is likely full of interstellar objects. John discusses this and his take on why UAP and interstellar objects need to be studied.

There is a theory that the Younger Dryas event some 12k years ago was caused by multiple impacts of comet material from the Tauris meteor stream. This would indicate that such shrapnel events are very common and dangerous.

What a treat it is to love astronomy (or history, or the history of cinema, or... choose your topic) at a moment in time when a site like UA-cam has independent content creators who do it primarily for the love of it, respecting and challenging the audience's intelligence by delving deep, making use of guides and templates to deliver incredible content with professional production values AND minimal budgetary concerns.
As someone who has loved astronomy and actively pursued an in-depth understanding of it for decades, who has read books like "The Inflationary Universe" by Alan Guth, this is all beyond my wildest dreams, I have never been happier.

What would be an interesting follow up paper from Siraj & Loeb (regarding their three millenia estimate for a SETRI conversation with an ETI) would be to incorporate elements of the Silurian Hypothesis in their Bayesian prior probabilities--i.e., the assumption that ETIs were aware of human technosignatures well before our EM activity. Of course, the Silurian Hypothesis has a host of corollary assumptions--i.e., crypto terrestrial, Bracewell Probes, and so on, which would be difficult, if not impossible, to quantify over.
Nevertheless, l would interpret the 3 millennium estimate as a ceiling, or an upper bound. Same goes, btw, for the 10^6 yr estimate for expecting a return probe from SETRI endeavors. Siraj said it best: "assuming standard propulsion technology."
But there's no reason to assume an ETI eavesdropping on us is at our relatively rudimentary Kardashev Scale 0ish level.
Indeed, Prof. David Kipping in a recent Cool Worlds post summarized the details of an estimate his team at Cornell came up with, indicating that a very high likelihood that any ETI detecting Earthly technosignatures is far more technologically advanced than ours.
So in that regard, concerning means of propulsion, it's natural to speculate that probes (whether Von Neumann or otherwise) from such an ETI might be utilizing means to get from Point A to Point B in our Riemannian manifold in ways that manipulate for instate space-time-energy-matter-information on a Planck Scale, i.e., tinker around with the very quantum topological structure of the vacuum, thus long ago circumventing the usual c speed limits on the surface Riemannian manifold.
To us Earthlings, such "travel" would appear like "a violation of our known laws of physics" but obviously our "laws" are a product of and relative to, our best available conventional physics.
And even THEN, we could speculate further (a' la Michio Kaku) and conceive of an ETI so advanced that their physics they're working with might in principle be unknowable or beyond the limits of what we can even conceive is logically or metaphysically possible.
So again, the million year estimate (on the authors' part) for an expected return probe should, IMO, be viewed as an upper bound.
    Excellent interview!

It is worth noting that the idea of the bolide causing the end cretaceous extinction is still being debated. It certainly must have played a part. But there have been other very large impacts, even during the late cretaceous that did not lead to anything approaching a mass extinction. So you also have to factor on rapid sea level drops, as well as changing ocean currents and the impact of the Deccan traps.

Uk's project Condign in the 90's came to the conclusion that UAP's are real phenomena that they call 'buoyant plasma formations'. The report suggested further research into 'novel military applications' and that Russia was working in this field and had understood the phenomena for some time and were particularly interested in 'plasma stealth'. Skip forward 25 years and the Russian SCRAMJET anti-ship hypersonic cruise missile 3M22 Zircon which is rumoured to use a form of plasma stealth is just finishing trials.

Planet 9 is a fun idea, but it was ruled out over 20 years ago when the one telescope with the anomalous readings showing another planetary body was shown to have had parts replaced shortly before the observations. When you remove that one telescope, every planet was where they were suppose to be and all planetary bodies are accounted for.

@@EventHorizonShow The length of the videos and the focus on one person.
UA-cam is so distracting with its content (and thumbnails) and the typical "top ten something" is so much easier to consume compared to one hour of focus.
To manage to deliver - again and again - captivating content with this length is impressive.

I looked at all the options of stopping asteroids, comets or comet fragments and the options available to us are unviable both in terms in timescales for building for just in time deployment and cost. Quite worrying really.

    • @pavel9652
      @pavel9652 2 роки тому +1

Not really, options will become viable in next 100 years or so. We have bigger problems on Earth right now. There is no 10km impactor threatening the Earth in next 100 years. People misjudge the risk all the time.

I £()♡€ this channel. It reminds me a lot of a short wave radio rebroadcast of a college radio station science show they produced there. I would pick it up late into the Sunday AM back in the 1980s.
One show was on, "The Bootes Void - The Pacific Ocean Of The Cosmos". Another was if comet delivered viruses are alien in origin being neither animal or plant & their role in evolution.
